2. Network Performance Platform
What is Network Latency
Network Latency Definition:
"The time it takes for a ping to reach and individual Internet
node and return to its point of origin. This ping is reported as
round trip time (RTT) in milliseconds (ms).“
It is about the speed of the Internet.
3. Network Performance Platform
High Latency VS Low Latency
Low network latency = Good web performance
High network latency = Poor web performance
The lower is the latency, the faster the data will move from one
location to another. It directly effects web performance,
application performance, and data transfer capabilities.
4. Network Performance Platform
Who should care
• Video streaming
• Online gaming
• FinTech
• AdTech
• eCommerce
• VoIP
• … and other industries
5. Network Performance Platform
Why is it important
• Amazon has made it a well-known fact that 100 ms in latency is 1% in
revenue.
• Wal-Mart sees a 1 second improvement in page load times as 2% in revenue
• Delays of a 100 ms can degrade gameplay to an extent where it is
unplayable.
• 81% of Internet users abandon a video if it does not play immediately.
• People will visit a website less often if it is slower than a close competitor by
more than 250 milliseconds
6. Network Performance Platform
Network Latency Test
Datapath.io has built free tool to measure network latency. This system scans
600,000 internet prefixes worldwide and creates a latency map:
AWS US West to Berlin over the Default AWS route
7. Network Performance Platform
How to Reduce Internet Latency
Monitoring is the first step. The second step is the reduction of latency.
There are 4 possibilities to do it:
1) Content delivery network
2) Anycast
3) Network monitoring
4) Network optimization
8. Network Performance Platform
Latency Optimization with
Datapath.io
Datapath.io’s optimization tool re-engineers BGP best path selection algorithm to route internet
traffic over the best performing routes. This results in a reduction in latency by up to 60%.
Example of performance improvement: 79.8% median latency improvement from
London to AWS Ireland
