Scientific Explanation Lab Report
Discussion and Scientific Explanations
During our first experiment we used blue, yellow and a mixture of blue and yellow to find their
transmission using different wavelengths. The blue peaked at 630 nm, the yellow peaked at 410
430 nm and the mixture (green) peaked at 630 nm. Results on Tables 1 3 and Graph 1. We had to
find the peak wavelength of each dye to identify the color of the solution. By using the Spec 20
machine the color or the dye that is seen depends on the wavelengths of light to see the color that is
reflected and the other colors that are absorbed [1]. By using a vision region colour wheel I can
see that because the blue peaked at 630 nm the color absorbs red light. The yellow absorbed violet
light and the mixture absorbed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also the intensity of color is related to the absorbance of light when using the Spec 20. The
intensity of the color of the compound is proportional to the absorbance of the compound. The
greater the intensity the greater the absorbance. By using the Spec 20 we could uncover an
unknown sample color by knowing a colors transmission/absorption range. We also learned that
absorbance and concentration of solutions are proportional to one another. The more concentrated
the solution the greater the light absorbed, which is proven by Diet Coke. By using a Beer s Law
Plot we can determine an unknown samples concentration by observing the absorption of the
sample [2]. The evidence of the experiment proved that the color of a compound is related to
absorption and absorption is related to the concentration of a

The impact of World War 1 on Japanese development in the...
Assess the impact of World War 1 on Japanese development in the early 20th century. World War 1
and its aftermath, together with the great Tokyo earthquake of 1923, brought profound changes in
social, intellectual, and urban consciousness. (Jansen 496)World War 1 caused many changes in the
nation of Japan, both positive and negative. The whole infrastructure of the country altered
immensely during the early 20th century, even when compared to the drastic modernisation of the
Meiji Restoration. In the first quarter of the 20th century Japan had no less than 3 different
emperors, and subsequently experienced 3 different historical eras. July 1912 saw the death of the
much exulted Emperor Meiji, his successor (called the Taisho Emperor)... Show more content on

Of the big four (Mitsui, Sumitomo, Mitsubishi and Yasuda) the first three concentrated on heavy
industry such as ship building. This proved a lucrative move considering the demand for ships
during the war, for military and trade purposes. Of course none of these changes would have taken
place had the government not agreed to the trade agreements and industrial tutoring of Europe and
the United States.
World War 1 also ushered in changes in the government of Japan. These changes were less visible
differences and more a change in the ideas of how a government should be structured. Political party
government took a long time to take hold.
The Meiji Constitution was deliberately vague on the subject of executive responsibility.
Sovereignty and final authority in all matters rested with the throne, but at the same time the
ruler had to be protected from active participation lest he be found fallible. (Jansen 496)Up until
1921, considered the dawn of party politics in Japan, the government system was set up of four
main parts. A powerful Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister, was in control of local
government and national police. (The Emperor was theoretically head of the armed services, but
generals and admirals were selected by the staff of the armed services to protect the Emperor from
participation) A Privy Council made of imperial appointees had to approve of important decisions
on national policy or the constitution. A House of Peers,

The Tesla Model X Analysis
The Tesla Model X is a 7 passenger, all electric sport utility vehicle and has already been deemed
the fastest (and cleanest) SUV on the planet. This second model from Tesla Motors (third if you
count the limited production/availability Tesla Roadster) was introduced in late September and has
promptly gone on sale.
While most of us won t be able to afford this six figure SUV even as less costly versions follow
next year, we can only dream about owning one or at least seeing its falcon wing doors in action.
Lots of information about the Model X has been dispensed over the past few weeks, including the
following lesser known facts.
1. Your Model X may protect you from a bioweapon. Or not.
It has been said that paranoia is a destroyer (with apologies to the Kinks). But what if THEY are
really out to get you? Well, Tesla Motorshas thought about that problem when crafting the Model X.
Specifically, a button located on the dashboard when activated is designed to protect you and your
passengers from pollution, viruses and bacteria. Inscribed with the international symbol for
biological hazard, medical grade air filters are activated to provide life saving protection.
But that claim has been disputed with Gizmodo calling out Elon Musk. Although any HEPA filter
will protect against bacteria agents such as anthrax or the plague du jour, it won t stop viruses,
which are too small to be caught by such filters. Yes, the Model X s filters probably do provide

Charles Darwin s Theory Of Evolution By Natural Selection
Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin (The Father of the Theory of evolution by Natural Selection) who was born
February 12th 1809 was very important in the development of the scientific and humanist idea. He
was the first person to make the world aware of their place in the evolutionary process when the
most powerful and intelligent form of life discovered how humanity had evolved. The theory of
evolution by natural selection was first put forward by Darwin in On the Origin of Species,
published in 1859, and his theory is still generally accepted as the best available explanation of
the way life on this planet developed. As a young boy Darwin collected beetles, moths and other
objects he found to be

Pros And Cons Of Conflict Theory
Conflict theory is when conflicts arise due to the limited resources, distributing power, and status
unevenly also causes conflict between different social classes. Conflict theory helps to explain why
our society is unstable. This theory examines the inequalities in money, gender, class, and age
within today s society. Some basic principals of conflicttheory include thinking that individuals who
are believed to be ranked higher then others obtain most of the benefits in society. The biggest part
of conflict theoryis who has the most power, those without power are oppressed by people with
more power then them. Another, principal is the way society splits people up into different classes
based on their power. This has a lot to do with inequality, different groups of people have different
opportunities in life. Karl Marxsplit society into two many groups the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat.
The Bourgeoisie consisted of those who were higher up in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Anti gun control groups could argue that this would take away there feeling of security in
society. In today s world no one is safe anywhere, walking down the street, or even going home.
Someone having a gun on them would make them feel safe and not scared. Another, argument
that they make is gun control will not stop criminals. No matter how hard it is to obtain a gun, if
a criminal wants one they will find a way to get their hands on one. They also argue that gun
control laws like the background check is an invasion of that person s privacy. The biggest
argument that this group makes is that we do not need more gun control laws we need more
education and training. The more that someone knows about the weapon they are using the safer
they will be when using it. There are several accidental shootings that happen every year because
someone didn t know how to properly use the

Applying A Definition For Science
Applying a definition for science is a difficult thing to do considering there are various perspectives
on the matter. People ranging from novelists to ecologists to journalists to environmentalists have
their definitions which each contribute its own part to the meaning. Different parts of the definition
include ecosystems, the environment, the hard sciences as well as the scientific method.
Paul Keddy is an ecologist whose primary concern is wetlands. His approach focused on the
state of these wetlands and how they are important to the Earth as well as to the people. By
incorporating facts about this specific ecosystem, he emphasizes its preservation and the
significance it holds. Wetlands offer carbon storage, flood control, maintenance of biodiversity,
fish production, and aquifer recharge as well as other services (Keddy 141). Keddy explains that
by decreasing its size, limits and restrictions are placed on these valuable services. Despite the
many amenities wetlands provide, there are still many unknown which leaves a huge dilemma
because if people aren t aware of the significance of this particular ecosystem, they won t care
much to try and fight for its conservation. Even the ones that are well known, such as the
Mississippi River Basin, which is intensively studied, is ...often treated in isolation, which misses
two important scientific opportunities: that of learning from work carried out elsewhere, and that
of sharing knowledge (Keddy 163). His science is one that

A Narrative Of An Effective Narrative Is The Point Of View
A compelling historical narrative must not only be an honest representation of events but also
presents diverse details about them. One of the techniques used by authors in creating an effective
narrative is the point of view. The most transparent point of view would be the third person
narration. In this kind of narration, the narrator is knowledgeable about every character s opinions.
He can describe their actions and relay what is going through their minds. In contrast, first person
narrativeuncovers the emotions and opinions of a specific character in the story. The perspective
comes from and is focused on a single character. Although first person narration can be a
powerful technique if used properly, it is not always effective. My goal in this paper is to
expound that a first person narration brings about some complications in the viewpoint and
reliability of a historical narrative. First person narration limits the standpoint of the story. Since
first person narrative only focuses on one character, the characterization of others are disregarded.
For instance, Prince relates a story about his master s daughter and talked about how he often
[gets] drunk, and then he would get in a fury with his daughter, and beat her till she was not fit to
be seen (13). The experience of the daughter is only seen through the observations of Prince. Her
description of her own experiences is not fully discussed. Moreover, the readers are also not

With much apprehension starting the learning spec project for my Introduction to
Communication class, it begins as I walk up to the doors of Loyalty Tattoo in New Philadelphia,

might question what kind of shop it was. Today, Loyalty has come a long way and is now a
booming tattoobusiness, woven and snug in the heart of the community in the New Philadelphia

the same time was exasperating to me. Personally, I could not wait to find out how they kept
everything organized. They worked together, but separately in what appeared more like a

EURAM, Paris (France), may 2007. Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the viability
of hybrid competitive strategies, which combine differentiation and cost elements, and their impact
on organisational performance in comparison to pure strategies and stuck in the middle
combinations. The analysis carried out on a multisectorial sample of 164 Spanish firms has
revealed that a large number of them use different types of hybrid strategies and also that such
strategies tend to be associated with higher levels of firm performance, particularly those... Show

1 2 The present paper seeks to contribute to this debate about the influence of pure and hybrid
strategies on performance in various ways. Firstly, this research study takes a further step
toward the generalisation of the results of previous works by carrying out a multisectorial
analysis. Secondly, the study has used data about Spanish firms; it must be remembered that
empirical research had so far basically centred on US data (Ghobadian, Veettil and O Regan,
2006). In this respect, Spain can prove to be an interesting context for the study of competitive
strategies because it is a country which has experienced a significant economic development in
recent years, competition via differentiation having acquired more and more importance as
opposed to costs. Thirdly, few studies have had as their specific main aim to check the
relationship between hybrid strategies and performance. Further theoretical work and additional
replications are thus needed to refine methodologies (Campbell Hunt, 2000; Fritz, 2006; Parnell,
1997). The present paper will therefore try to perform a statistical analysis of the effect caused by
pure and hybrid competitive strategies on performance. Finally, the stuck in the middle concept has
been examined in depth, analysing, too, its implications for performance compared to pure and
hybrid strategies, a topic that few studies had dealt with so far. In order to achieve our aims, we have

The Story Of The Koa Tree
Step by step, breath after heavy breath, Mikey and I hiked our way up the Maka ula O oma trail.
It was a bit embarrassing that after lifting weights for the preceding four months we were still
winded by the moderate size hill. We took a break half way up but this was no wasted break. I
found an opening off the path and noticed a Koa treeabout three feet high. Then I turned to Mikey
and said, this is the reason we came up here. Is that a Koa tree? I remember him asking before I
explained to him how it most definitely was, however, as they reach maturity they take on a
different form. We were there in search for the great elders, towering in stature with leaves
resembling a crescent. After my explanation he quickly responded, Can we... Show more content on

We were about to leave before coming across four bottles littered on the ground. The bottles were
gross looking and things were already beginning to grow on it. We didn t want to bring these with
us through the rest of our adventure. So I thought, what would the ancient Hawaiians do? And as I
raised my head my sights were locked on a tea leaf plant. I walk over, thank the plant, and pick a
couple of leaves from it. I then ripped each leaf in half and began to bundle up the bottles and tie
them together. Two bundles were easier to carry than four bottles so we carried them to the fork
in the trail and left them there until we got back from our journey. We were back on track,
making our way down the left route. I was hopeful but discouraged for the first couple hundred
feet, with Mikey taking the lead pointing at every different plant asking Is that a Koa tree? I
rebuttal by saying, we literally saw one like ten minutes ago. To no surprise his curiosity or his
inner child proceeded with the questions. One tree exposed itself after the other until it seemed as
all the trees bordering the trail became Koa trees. I was dragging my jaw on the floor as I slowly
walked under the chattering giants all wearing orange coats around their trunks. Seed pods began to
envelope the forest floor so much that Mikey and I lost each other for a while foraging on the
trail. We soon got more than a hundred seeds so decided to just relax under

Essay About Manila Metropolitan Theatre
History
What is the reason behind the closing of Manila Metropolitan Theatre? What are the details about
the restoration of the Metropolitan Theatre? Why is MET considered as a cultural heritage? Those
are the questions our group is trying to answer through this essay. As our group is doing the
research about the Manila Metropolitan Theatre, we found the answers in our questions. The
Metropolitan Theatre was considered to be the Grand Dame of Manila and also as the crown
jewel of the theatres in Manila. The person behind the unique design of the theatre was Arch. Juan
Arellano. The MET was officially introduce on December 10, 1931. There are also great artists
behind the making of MET, one of them is the National artist Fernando Amorsolo. An Italian
sculptor named Francesco Ricardo Monti is the one who made the sculptures of Adam and Eve

Theme Of Classism In Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, is a movie about the story of Jamal Malik, an
18 year old orphan, and his underdog performance on India s version of the show Who Wants to
be a Millionaire? . Jamal goes all the way, winning 20 million rupees (the currency of India).
After the end of the first night, Jamal gets arrested and accused of cheating. While in the police
station, he is brutally beaten and heavily interrogated as to how he, a slumdog (a child who was
raised in the slums), knows all of the answers. Trying to prove his innocence, he reflects back on
his harsh childhood. He proclaims that the reasoning for him knowing all of the answers is
because of all of the rough experiences he had as a child. The movie flashes back to the moments
in which he learned the answers. Severe poverty, underdevelopment, starvation, violence, and
dirtiness are clearly portrayed in the rugged slums of Mumbai during these flashbacks. The other
side is shown, too, with Javed, who is a slumlord and lives in a massive, guarded mansion.
Classism is the reason for both sides of the spectrum. Slumdog Millionaire portrays the high power
society and extreme classism in India and the oppression and discriminationthat derives from it.
Classism is one of the most prominent issues portrayed within Slumdog Millionaire. According to
Merriam Webster, a simple definition of classism is prejudice or discrimination based on class .
Classism is very prominent and extreme in India, and it

Conservation of Linear Momentum
Objective
The primary goal of this experiment was to study the force that a jet generates on hemispherical,
flat, and conical surfaces. Further, the experiment exposed students to the concept of linear
momentum conservation by observing forces that a jet of water exerts on objects with different
shapes.
Results and Graphs Figure 1: Forces Acting on the x and y axis
As can be seen, the forces that act on the x direction are caused by pressure at sections 1 and 2.
Similarly, an expression that relates the conservation of linear momentum in the Y direction can be
developed.
Discussion
Although the experiment was successful, some errors occurred during the experiment that made
most values to deviate from the expected ones. Generally, both fixed and random errors were
observed (Mitchell Worledge, 2015). The random errors, in this case, resulted into statistical
fluctuations in the measured data because of the limitations in precision measurement. Additionally,
the random errors occurred due to inability to take the same measurements as the expected ones.
Furthermore, fixed errors were responsible for reduced inaccuracies in the values obtained (Valiani
Caleffi, 2011). However, the best way to minimize random errors is by averaging

Golden Age Of Athens
Athens had what is known as its Golden Age between 480 and 430 BCE, and while it was a
relatively short period of time, it laid the foundations of western civilization.
As the Golden Age dawned, the autonomous poleis (city states) that had formed in the preceding
two to three centuries had set aside their differences and united to face the threat of invasion posed
by the Persian Empire. Though vastly outnumbered, the Greeks had finally defeated the Persian
armies in 480 BCE. In the years of peace that followed, the Greeks made significant advances in art,
literature, science and philosophy, as pride and patriotism drove them to greater heights of
creativity and in Athens, an experiment with a new kind of government flourished under the
statesman Pericles.
Prior to about 600 BCE, Athens had been an oligarchy, with an aristocratic minority controlling its
government. But enlightened Athenian leaders began instituting reforms to the city s government
between 600 and 500 BCE. Solon (c. 638 558 BCE) introduced a new code of laws that was less
harsh than Athens existing legal code (laid out by an Athenian statesman called Draco, hence the
term draconian to describe repressive laws) , and also set up a Popular Assembly of Citizens,
although a council of aristocrats still made the laws.
Cleisthenes (c. 570 508 BCE) known as the Father of Democracy expanded democracy still
further, creating a Council of 500, which consisted of 50 representatives from each Greek tribe. He

Exxon Valdez and the Recovery of Prince William Sound Essay
Exxon Valdez and the Recovery of Prince William Sound
Approximately eleven years ago, an area of Alaska s southern coast known as Prince William
Sound was a disaster area. A nauseating scent of rotting carcasses and oil filtered through the air.
Sea birds screamed in anguish as they fought to survive with oil drenched feathers. Under the
surface billions of organisms ceased to live due to the toxicity of the inescapable wrath of the
blackened water. Prince William Sound had once been a place of beauty and grace, now it was
home to an environmental deathbed. The media broadcast pictures of this nearly unbearable scene

Massive cleanup efforts were initiated within a few weeks of the spill and they continued at
reduced levels for the next three years. Approximately 14% of the spilled oil was recovered by
cleanup crews (Newsweek, p.50). As a result of these efforts and natural weathering, little oil from
the spill remained in the affected area by 1992. However, according to the National Oceanic and
Atmosphere Administration some oil residues are still found under the ocean surface in areas
sheltered from wind and waves. Yet, these residues are highly weathered and the toxicity is
reduced to levels tolerable by organisms in the water (7). Nonetheless, the magnitude and timing of
the Exxon Valdez oil spillraised immediate concerns about possible effects on marine fish and
wildlife and prospects that these effects might be long lasting. Professors John Wiens and David
Page spent many years studying theses effects of the oil spill and they presented their findings at
the International Oil Spill Conference in Seattle, March 8 11, 1999. Their findings contain the
most recent results of the ongoing studies in Prince William Sound. Through extensive work with
three different groups of animals affected by the spill, they have exhibited a remarkable recovery
by the ecosystem of Prince William Sound (Wiens, Page et al.). The first species the scientists

Cultural Conflicts That Influenced His Moral Compass And...
In the story Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio faced several cultural conflicts that influenced his moral
compass and cultural identity. First, he faced a cultural conflict between his mother and father s
aspirations regarding his destiny. His mother wanted Antonio to pursue a future life as a priest,
while his father wanted Antonio to be a cowboy. Similarly, I grappled with the same battle as a
child. My mother wanted me to pursue medicine, while my father wanted me to become an
engineer and follow their footsteps. Just like Antonio had learned from Ultima, this was an
element I had to decide for myself. I found out from life experiences that my passion for science,
the human body, and the desire to prolong and save people s lives, ultimately made my decision to
pursue medicine.
Another cultural conflict he faced was between his Spanish speaking self and his English speaking
schoolmates. Throughout his life, he had followed the Spanish culture of his family, who mainly
spoke Spanish in their home. His first day of school, he noticed that his English speaking
schoolmates were less accepting of his culture when he spoke Spanish in front of the class and
unpacked his lunch filled with Hispanic food, which differed from the sandwiches his schoolmates
brought for lunch. I shared the same prejudice as Antonio when I initially came to Los Angeles
from the Philippines. My first day as a third grader, I was humiliated by my schoolmates because I

Camilla Gibb s Sweetness In The Belly
Intro Sweetness in the Belly by Camilla Gibb tells us the story of Lilly, a white woman who was
raised in Morocco and who was eventually forced to flee Africa from the Red Terror genocides.
It takes place in the 70s and 80s, giving us her perspectives both in Ethiopia, where she is sent to
live after she turns sixteen, as well as England, where she lives as a refugee. Despite the decades
in which these events transpire, Sweetness in the Belly is still a relevant frame of which to
compare modern struggles that come with of racism, immigration, and living in a poor country.
p1 One of the reasons why Sweetness in the Belly is relevant today is its portrayal of racism. Lilly
is a white woman in Ethiopia for half of the book, and a Muslim woman living in England in the
other. In Ethiopia, Lilly is regarded as a farenji, a foreigner, who don t have a very good reputation
and who are few and far between, leaving Lilly alone in breaking racial barriers and... Show more

Despite moving around with her parents a lot as a child, it leaves her with no easy task when
coming to England. Her struggles with assimilating to British culture are evident as she holds
true to her original traditions. This is less true of her friend Amina, however: For all her
conviction that her children should know where they come from, she seems increasingly less
interested in maintaining the rituals of the past (p 140). These struggles are still true for
immigrants today, which is exceptionally important considering how multicultural Canada is and
the number of immigrants who come here each year. Although Lilly already knows English,
language barriers are also a very real issue for some immigrants, and although she doesn t struggle
in England with language, she does when she first gets to Harar. She [Nouria] shrugged, not

Paris in the 1920’s – “The Lost Generation” Essay
Paris in the 1920 s The Lost Generation
Between the end of the First World War and Hitler s seizure of power a cultural explosion
occurred in Paris that altered our notions of art and reality and shaped our way of viewing the
world ever since. In the 1920 s, Paris became the undisputed international capital of pleasure and
was regarded as the cultural and artistic center of Europe with a reputation for staging one of its
most glamorous eras, as well as some of the most spectacular revues in the world. Imagine for a
moment, that it really is 1920 s Paris. You are leisurely strolling through the gas lit promenades.

By the end of the decade, statistics revealed that there were as many as thirty thousand artists in
Paris alone.
The Lost Generation is essentially a term that is used to describe the young adults of the 1920 s
who were changing with the times and rebelling against what America had become after the war.
They populated areas like Paris and London where they expected to find literary freedom and a
cosmopolitan way of life. The Lost Generation of American writers and poets left America,
seeking refuge from the broken culture and devastation that had come from the war, and ended
up in Paris, a city that had a thriving art culture where they could write freely and lavish in the
Bohemian lifestyle without rules. They drank, traveled, had love affairs, and wrote. They were
influenced by the paintings of artists like Dada and Picasso and collected their works, as well as
socialized with them. They critiqued each other s writing and often met in bookstores, cafГ©s,
and bars to talk about their works and life in general. They had mostly upper middle class
upbringings and were sustained in hard times by their parents fortunes. They chose to come to
Paris to seek artistic fulfillment and ended up writing what is possibly considered some of the best
fiction of the 20th century. It was the time when writers, painters, musicians, and composers went to

My Life Would Suck Without You Rhetorical Devices
My Life Would Suck Without You is a catchy, upbeat, and fast tempo song. Baylee Baxter and I
have grown up together since we were two. We were neighbors in the neighborhood behind the
high school. We spent every single day, it seemed like, together playing games, watching movies, or
riding bikes. No matter what the weather was, what timeit was, or who we were with; we always
found fun things to do. One of our favorite things to do together was to sing and dance. We were
constantly making up dances to songs that were on, movies or that we heard on the radio. We
knew every word of every Disney song. As we grew up, one of our favorite shows to watch together
was Glee. In the show Glee, the McKinley High glee club performed the song My Life... Show

have a piece of each other. We were always two parts to one whole, that was how close we were.
No matter how hard someone tried, there was no separating us. Ever since the day, we watch
Finn and Rachel perform My Life Would Suck Without You we fell in love with the song. We
would have concerts in our basements where we belted out the lyrics and danced. On every car

nobody will ever be able to replace the friendship that we had. We helped each other get through
the hardest times in our lives. Without each other, we wouldn t be the same people we are today.

Literacy Analysis
Literary Analysis of Battle Royal I m writing an analysis of Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison. It is
told from the first person point of view. This is a story about a young African American named
Ralph Ellison, who is trying to be accepted by white society. He is offered the opportunity to read
his speech he had written for his graduation at a gathering of the town s leading white citizens
(p.286). Ralph Ellison is told that he should partake in the Battle Royal before giving his speech as
part of the entertainment. The Battle Royal is a fight in which several young African Americanboys
are blindfolded, given boxing gloves, and forced to fight each other until one person is left
standing in a boxing arena. There are no time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To top it off they blind fold all of the boys just to make it more amusing. They humiliate the boys
by making them watch a nude woman dance before the fight. And then they force them to pick up
fake coins off of an electrified rug. Shocking them and getting enjoyment from their pain. This is a
very racist story. But unfortunately it truly reflects on how these individuals were treated during
this time. The big shots only want to be controlling racists, and get enjoyment from this. They will
not accept any behavior from the African Americans except submission. The idea of social
equality between them and the African Americans is quite appalling for them (p.297). They are
strictly set against this and will probably do what ever it takes to prevent this from happening. I
liked the ambition of Ralph, his determination to make sure that he is heard. He really feels as
though his speech will make a huge impact for his people in his community. He is trying to become
accepted into a society that does not want to accept him or his people. I agree with Paula Caudle,
Naomi Lancaster, and Andy Stamper Students, University of North Carolina at Pembroke (http:/

In Kesey s novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, the narrator, Bromden, has a very vivid and
disturbing dream of the hospital as a slaughterhouse where the staff hang old Blastic on a meat

Bromden s perception of McMurphy s attempts to drag them out of the fog is showed when he
states, There s no sense in it, any fool can see; I wouldn t do it on my own (Kesey 142). This
takes place when McMurphy is trying to get the chronics to vote for the time of watching TV to

Bromden sees McMurphy s attempts to pull them out of the fog as troubling, as it will increase

This paper will explore the biopsychosocial components of fibromyalgia for patients and the current
research surrounding the use of mindfulness as a treatment for the disorder.
The Disorder
Fibromyalgia is a persistent pain disorder that affects multiple parts of a person s body that
typically occurs between ages thirty and fifty years old (Glennon, 2010). The disorder is seven
times more common in females than males and may occur in as much as 8% of the women
within their lifetimes (Arnold et al., 2008). While general knowledge on fibromyalgia has
increased since the American College of Rheumatology s first report in 1990 (Clauw et al., 2011),
the etiology and exact psychophysiological process creating the disorder is still yet to be
determined (Ryan, 2013).
Fibromyalgia Pain Chronic and widespread pain is understandably the most distressing symptom of
fibroyalgia and predominantly why patients seek medical help in the first place. Fibromyalgia is a
pain disorder of the central nervous system that distorts not only the person s perception of
intensity of pain but also the person s perception of what causes pain in the first place because of
malfunctioning nociceptors (Clauw et al., 2011). Average pain is processed by nociceptors via two
sets of neural pathways. The ascending neural pathway is activated by painful stimuli like extreme
temperature, pressure, and impact. The ascending pathway sends nociceptive signals to send
neurotransmitters

Tensions In Shalamov s Through The Snow
Leaders aren t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work,
says Vince Lombardi (qtd. in Walter). Lombardi, a retired American football coach, dispels the
myth that leaders are born, but instead are the result of years of strenuous effort. As Lombardi
depicts, being a leader is not easy, but a difficult task for the beholder. This feeling creates tension
between the desire to become a leader and the difficulty of becoming one. Varlam Tikhonovich
Shalamov writes about these same tensions throughout his short story Through the Snow. He
compares the difficult tasks of a leader to that of someone treading through virgin snow in order to
clear a path (Shalamov 320). Varlam Shalamov states, My stories are... Show more content on

For a leader, it can be very difficult for them to influence their followers. Major Jacob W. Miller
states that there are three types of outcomes that can occur: resistance, compliance, and
commitment (Miller 214). The optimal outcome is commitment because the followers are willing
to give maximum effort in order to finish the order. The followers are likely to strive for
successful completion that exceeds standards (Miller 218). As seen in Through the Snow the
followers are committed to the task. They do not lackadaisically stroll through the snow, but
instead tramp down virgin snow, a place where man s foot has never trodden (Shalamov 320). The
hardest tension for a leader is when his followers turn against him. Andrei Sakharov, the leading
nuclear physicist during the development of the Soviet atomic bomb, was named the Hero of
Socialist Labor due to his work and leadership (Timmons). However, during his work, he developed
a deep awareness of the dangers of nuclear testing and the irreversible consequences of nuclear war
(Timmons). Therefore, he began to openly push for greater cooperation between the Soviet Union
and United States. Even though he had very few outspoken followers, he continued to push through
the tensions. Eventually, authorities exiled Sakharov to his house and kept under police
surveillance (Timmons). Nevertheless, he continued to strive for

What legacy am I leaving my family, as husband, father, or just in general a human being? I am not
trying to shoulder the world, nope just be what God called me to be: Holy! A Man Is an Image
Bearer of God, (Kendrick, 2011, pg. 66) and God is Holy, so we must be Holy without excuse. I am
not to bring glory to myself but to the creator of life.
Jesus said in Matthew 23:11, But, he that is greatest among you shall be your servant! This
sentence starts with a conjunction in a simple sentence. Don t miss the real reason he made this
statement. It s really easy to understand, but the statement is so complex, you must ask yourself
these questions. Who is serving whom? What order does one serve and in what manner is one
serving? Is there service for fear of retribution, or out of love? Is remuneration or reciprocity the
reason for service or just because?
Is this service about self or about the other person seeing God being glorified through service?
This question is the reason Cain was not able, even though he wanted to be Abel. His heart was
not pure in serving the Lord but instead of serving he wanted to be served. God told him, had his
heart been in the right place his gift would have been accepted. From this story many things come

The Black Of Black Is Ugly
Black is Ugly
Earlier in this century, Italians, Jews, and Rumanians were widely considered to be of different
even inferior racial stock compared to the almost transparently white English, Germans, and
Swedes. Just a few decades later, those groups were fully accepted into the community of whites
while Asians, Latinos, and most of all, African Americans have been reduced because of their
darker skin. All over the world, light/fair skinned people have seemingly been placed on a pedestal
while darker skinned people have been ridiculed, or worse, been considered ugly. Dark skinned
inhabitants outnumber the global population by 3/4ths yet among them there still exists a prevalent

More specifically, African Americans with their traditionally African features have always had an
uneasy coexistence with the European (white) idea of beauty. According to Angela M. Neal and
Midge L. Wilson, Compared to Black males, Black females have been more profoundly affected
by the prejudicial fallout surrounding issues of skin color, facial features, and hair. Such impact
can be attributed in large part to the importance of physical attractiveness for all women .
Colorism
Colorism is the term most commonly used for the phenomenon of non white people
discriminating for and against those who are lighter within their own ethnic groups. Colorism is
more specified and sophisticated strain of racism, which focuses just on superficial aspects of
human bodies primarily skin color. Notion of light skin in the United States of America is an
example of a location where colorism thrives: supremacy is almost automatically associated with
lighter complexion, so external characteristic is an indication of superiority. Colorism, in its
simplest definition, is a discrimination based on the skin tone. Colorism is a more concrete form
of racism, which is also defined as discriminatory treatment of individuals falling within the same
racial group on the basis of skin color (Herring Keith in Yancey, 2004).

Analysis Of Martinrea s Debt And Equity Ratio
What is surprising, however, is that despite a 51% increase in long term debt during 2014,
Martinrea s debt to equity ratio actually decreased. A closer look at the notes to the financial
statements reveals the cause of this decrease. First, while long term debt increased significantly
during 2014, the 12% increase in overall liabilities was less significant. As the result of their
purchase of the remainder of Honsel Aluminum, Martinrea removed a liability from their balance
sheetwhich previously represented a put option that could force them to purchase this remaining
portion. Martinrea ended up making the purchase before this option was exercised, and the removal
of this liability dampened the increase in total liabilities. Second, the acquisition of Honsel
significantly removed the equity attributable to a non controlling interest, causing a 24% increase
in equity attributable to the shareholders of the company (despite total equity only increasing
marginally). These two factors lead to a decrease in Martinrea s debt to equity ratio.
Shareholder s Equity
Total shareholders equity increased $21,735,000 or 3.9% YoY. Capital stockand contributed surplus
increases were quite insignificant, but accumulated other comprehensive income increased 114.4%
YoY, and the accumulated deficit decreased $77,104,000 or 54.2% YoY. Other equity is now at

City Beautiful Planning of the Los Angeles Civic Center

The Los Angeles Civic Center was designed in the Grand Manner style which refers to an idealized

Double-Strand Breaks In Biomedical Research
The past decade has brought rapid and significant innovations in genome editing techniques. For the
first time researchers have the opportunity to manipulate essentially any gene in a plethora of cells
and organisms, using targeted nucleases that were designed for sequence specific binding of the
DNA.
One of the first breakthrough methods of gene targeting was the usage of chimeric proteins called
zinc fingers nucleases (ZFN) to create double strand breaks. Still, the real revolution was the
introduction of CRISPR and CRISPR associated (Cas) systems into the biomedical research arena.
One specific CRISPR nuclease Cas9 paired with short guide RNA has the ability to recognize the

One of them is a reported high incidence of nonspecific DNA cleavage; while this has cooled some
of the initial enthusiasm about this method, a potential remedy is the expression of two CRISPR
modules with nickase activity against two genomic sites that are closely adjacent to one another.
Then there is a problem of mosaicism, where mutant allele is produced in only some of the cells, as
nucleases may not inevitably cut the DNA during one stage of embryonic development. The
production of multiple mutations in one organism is also possible, which can create phenotyping
bottlenecks in mouse models.
Regardless of those burning problems, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technique presents

When using Snort IDS, there are several modes that if configured properly, will generate alerts.
Alerts are set by the user within the command prompt when initiating a rule set. There are five
alerting options available with Snort IDS. According to (Roesch, 1999), Alerts may either be sent
to syslog, logged to an alert text file in two different formats, or sent as Win Popup messages using
the Samba smbclient program. If there has been no alerts, the selected rule set was set may not
have been enabled by the user. Another scenario where alerts may not occur is when another task is
being performed. According to (Roesch, 1999) when alerting is unnecessary ... Show more content

5. What are the advantages of using rule sets from the snort web site?
There are several advantages of using the existing rule sets already created on the Snort web site.
One advantage of using the existing rules is that they have been created to work effectively against
the common vulnerabilities. Creating your own rule sets require a working knowledge of Snort and
having the outcome of the created rule may not yield the desired effect that the administrator is
seeking.
6. Describe (in plain English) at least one type of rule set you would want to add to a high level
security network and why?
A rule set that I would add to a high level network would be an app detect rule. With this rule the
traffic that occurs in various applications that deal with the network would be controlled. This is
especially important because if an application within the network is compromised, it could be
utilized to gain access to the network.
7. If a person with malicious intent were to get into your network and have read/write access to
your IDS log or rule set how could they use that information to their advantage?
If someone with malicious intent was to gain read/write access to your IDS log or rule set, they
could use that information to determine how your IDS was configured. Especially if detailed
logging is set up. The information could provide the information of what rule sets are being utilized

The Last Duchess By Robert Browning
Art is not just a form of beauty but also a form of power. In it lies deep meaning and value and
often tells a story. Robert Browning s poem The Last Duchess portrays this power of art, which is
evident in how the Duke captures more than just the image of his former wife in the painting. To
him the painting represents his control and power and tells the tale of his former wife in the way
he speaks of the painting. An analysis of the poem My Last Duchesswill reveal how the Duke uses
art to further the narrative of this poem through symbolism, reveal the relationship with his former
wife and control others.
The writer of this poem Robert Browning is a master at captivating the potential of the dramatic
monologue, here art is expressed by symbolism and it is used as a structure for the poem. The
speaker of this poem who is the Duke holds himself in high esteem and loves the control his
position gives him as an authority. Accordingly, the Duke shows admiration for his former wife
who he killed when he says that s my last duchess on the wall (line 1). Here he admires her more
as an object of art than he did in reality. The Duke uses art as an image that symbolizes his control
and dominance over his former wife; more so he not only uses the painting of his wife to express
his control but also the sculpture of Neptune taming a sea horse (line 55) as an image at the end to
emphasize and make his point clear that he is very controlling and possessive. Aside from the

Gender wage gap is the one type of discrimination that has received the most outcry. Wage gap
affects women of all races, especially African Americans and Hispanics. Your mother, your
sister, niece, aunt, grandmother and your daughters are affected by this gap in pay. Gender
wage gap affects everyone because it tell you that we all live in a society that judges someone s
worth based on thier sex and not their ability and qualifications. Hispanics and Latinos are paid
55 cents to an average man s dollar, an African American woman is paid 60 cents, a white
woman 77 cents to every man s dollar. Gender wage gap does not only focus on paying women
less but paying women that are minorities way less. This is a social problem that began years
ago, Although the government is making strides to eradicate gender wage gap we still have a
long way to go. This disparity should be everyone s concern not just women. This wage gap leaves
working woman and their familie shortchanged because the gap translates into $10,762 less per

The International Labour Organization and Its Attempt to...
Introduction This essay will look at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and its attempts
to alleviate child labour up until now. Firstly, a definition of child labour will be provided after
which an introductory overview will be given about the ILO s activities against child labour.
Thereafter, a critical assessment will be provided regarding the ILO s steps against child labour,
and some major problems will be highlighted regarding the ILO s approach to eliminate child
labour. Defining Child Labour Mowing the lawn, washing the car and dishes, or cleaning the
kitchen are the types of tasks that most children dislike to do. However, tasks such as these are
not defined as child labour. Generally speaking, child labour is defined as something along the
lines of: Labour that exploits children and restricts their mental and physical development , and
thus household chores, in most cases, cannot be considered to be a form of child labour. However,
labour that is not appropriate for children, such as working with dangerous machinery, mining, or
work that exposes children to sexual abuse, can be defined as child labour. This is due to the fact
that, in situations like the ones described, children are exposed to exploitation and to circumstances
that are detrimental to their physical and mental health. That being said, labour in itself is not
considered to be necessarily a bad thing for children, since it can provide them with many learning
opportunities. For example,

Essay on Crossing Boundaries- Maos Last Dancer
Crossing boundaries is pushing yourself past the limits. There are many people that cross
various boundaries, whether it is a physical boundary, cultural boundary or a mental boundary.
This is seen in the prescribed text, the film Mao s Last Dancer directed by Bruce Beresford. In
this we see not only the main character Li cross boundaries but also, the minor characters, Ben
and Teacher Chang. Crossing boundaries also heard in the Song Love Story by Taylor swift.
This song relates back to the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In these texts we
see Romeo and Juliet both crossing boundaries. There are many reasons why people cross
boundaries, perhaps to prove a point to someone, to become a better person, or maybe because of...

After all the hard work put into the ballet dancing because he wanted to prove he was better then
what they all thought he was, Li becomes stronger and by far the best ballet dancer after pushing
himself to his best. This fable shows that anyone can push themselves to be better then they think.
While Li is in America he finds a beautiful girl Elizabeth, who he thinks is the one for him. The
beach scene we see of Li and Liz is a very important scene, this shows us a close up of the two of
them, and Li lets Liz know how he feels free in America and that when he dances in China, its only

the beach water in the background. This scene also shows that Li s English is much more fluent
and he understands a lot more. Everything is then going well for Li, his ballet is going just the
way he never expected it to be, which was fantastic and he had his girl. But then the Chinese
government sent a request for Li to go home back to china after being defected for 9 years,
because they realised the fame and talent he had. Li didn t want to go back to China, because he
felt so free and loved it in America, as well as having his girlfriend that he did not want to leave.

The Underground Railroad Analysis
Unraveling History within The Underground Railroad While Colson Whiteheads, The
Underground Railroad (2016) memorializes slavery, it also broadens our otherwise unrealistic
views of American history. The novel follows a young slave girl, Cora, on her historic venture
through delusional America on the Underground Railroad, shortly after the congress passed the
Compromise of 1850 (285). As Cora travels north, she discovers that every state individually
expresses different attributes of slavery(68). The Compromise of 1850 forced northerners to return
all found fugitive slaves back to the south (TC1850). During an interview with David Bianculli,
Whitehead mentions that the default view of slavery consists of strict slave catcher s and master s
interpretations, rather than the historical aspects of slavery (8 Aug. 2016). This observation allows
him to focus on a fictional storyline that derives nonfictional events in history. In, The Underground
Railroad, Whitehead emphasizes an alternate view of the American history pertaining to the
institution of slavery. Throughout every elementary History class, educators explain the
colonization of America in a crudely oversimplified, unrealistic way. Teachers often emphasize that
the English simply overtook claimed land, rather than stating the whites came to this land for a
fresh start and to escape the tyranny of their masters, just as the freeman had fled theirs. But the
ideals [that] they held up for themselves, they denied for

Liquid Chondroitin
Liquid glucosamine chondroitin is used to treat joint pain and inflammation associated with
osteoarthritis and other joint and bone conditions. So why does glucosamine and chondroitin
work so well together? They are both molecules which make up the cartilage that is found in our
joints. It is normal for cartilage to break down and repair itself however it is abnormal when the
repair stage breaks down. If glucosamine and chondroitin are not present in sufficient quantities
then repair of joint cartilage can not take place and this is what leads to osteoarthritis and other
painful joint conditions. By taking a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement, you ensure that
there is always a ready supple of the cartilage building blocks to repair your joint cartilage. What
is glucosamine? Glucosamine used to form and repair cartilage. It is also an... Show more content

It has also been shown that the pain relief is very similar or even the same as that experienced by
patients taking NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti inflammatory medications). The benefit of liquid
glucosamine chondroitin over NSAIDs is the lack of side effects and discomfort. There are very
few, if any, side effects to taking glucosamine and chondroitin joint supplements. There is also some
evidence that NSAID s can actually INCREASE the progression of arthritis! This is a big risk to
take if you are trying to reduce your arthritis symptoms. Glucosamine chondroitin on the other hand
can protect the cartilage leading to long term relief from arthritis symptoms. Why Liquid? Liquid is
absorbed quicker than any other form of substance that we put into our body. Short of injecting
yourself with glucosamine chondroitin, a liquid form provides the fastest possible absorption into
the bloodstream. That is why liquid glucosamine chondroitin supplements come highly
recommended from doctors and patients

CalSTRS Defined Benefit Program is a conventional retirement plan calculated based on a
formula using the age, years of service/service credit, and final compensation. The coverage is
on CalSTRS 2% at 60 (age 50 with at least 30 years of service credit; or age 55 with five years of
service credit), and on CalSTRS 2% at 62 (age 55 with at least five years of service. Teachers who
are eligible for the benefits are those who are teaching, vocational and guidance advising,
curriculum development related task, and a range of administrative responsibilities. The
contributions for this program are combinations of members, employers, and state. The benefit is
paid in the form of lifetime monthly annuity. In case of negative investment returns, employer bears
the risk which made it a safer option for the teachers. CalSTRS Cash Balance/Defined Benefit
Supplemental Program is a mixture of conventional defined benefit with additional savings for
retirement based on the account balance. Within this plan there are two programs, namely the
Defined Benefit Supplemental Program for the full time educators, and the Cash Balance Benefit
for the part time educators. In contrast to the conventional defined benefit, this program relies
heavily on the investment returns hence the amount of money paid at the time of retirement could
be less than the total contribution if the investment returns were negative. However, there

Original Research Question: Is there an increase in exceptionalities because we have more
research to identify disorders easily and quickly, or are we over diagnosing and generalizing mental
disorders?
Revised Research Question: What factors have caused a fluctuation in the number of diagnosis of
autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder amongst children in the past 20 years?
Reflection: When the research essay was assigned to the class, I was ecstatic because I knew
what subject I wanted to write about. The trouble I faced when developing the exact question
was narrowing down the topic, as well as making it approachable. I have a strong personal
connection to my research topic, and I truly believe that the information I gather while writing this
paper will significantly change the way I interact with others. Mental illness runs in my family, as
my older sister has bipolar disorder, my mom has Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), my oldest

The intended scenery created by the author or the events experienced by other characters and

this is when Miss Brill observes social encounters in the park, It was like a play, it was exactly
like a play. Who could believe the sky at the back wasn t painted? But it wasn t till a little brown
dog trotted on solemn and then slowly trotted off, like a little theatre dog, a little dog that had

they were acting (264 265). Miss Brill considers the park to be a lively place, a collective
performance in her fantasy, while others might only see the park as another public meeting place
or outdoor social spot. However, as readers may analyze further, the main character invents these

  • 2. Scientific Explanation Lab Report Discussion and Scientific Explanations During our first experiment we used blue, yellow and a mixture of blue and yellow to find their transmission using different wavelengths. The blue peaked at 630 nm, the yellow peaked at 410 430 nm and the mixture (green) peaked at 630 nm. Results on Tables 1 3 and Graph 1. We had to find the peak wavelength of each dye to identify the color of the solution. By using the Spec 20 machine the color or the dye that is seen depends on the wavelengths of light to see the color that is reflected and the other colors that are absorbed [1]. By using a vision region colour wheel I can see that because the blue peaked at 630 nm the color absorbs red light. The yellow absorbed violet light and the mixture absorbed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also the intensity of color is related to the absorbance of light when using the Spec 20. The intensity of the color of the compound is proportional to the absorbance of the compound. The greater the intensity the greater the absorbance. By using the Spec 20 we could uncover an unknown sample color by knowing a colors transmission/absorption range. We also learned that absorbance and concentration of solutions are proportional to one another. The more concentrated the solution the greater the light absorbed, which is proven by Diet Coke. By using a Beer s Law Plot we can determine an unknown samples concentration by observing the absorption of the sample [2]. The evidence of the experiment proved that the color of a compound is related to absorption and absorption is related to the concentration of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

World War 1 and its aftermath, together with the great Tokyo earthquake of 1923, brought profound changes in social, intellectual, and urban consciousness. (Jansen 496)World War 1 caused many changes in the nation of Japan, both positive and negative. The whole infrastructure of the country altered immensely during the early 20th century, even when compared to the drastic modernisation of the Meiji Restoration. In the first quarter of the 20th century Japan had no less than 3 different emperors, and subsequently experienced 3 different historical eras. July 1912 saw the death of the much exulted Emperor Meiji, his successor (called the Taisho Emperor)... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of the big four (Mitsui, Sumitomo, Mitsubishi and Yasuda) the first three concentrated on heavy industry such as ship building. This proved a lucrative move considering the demand for ships during the war, for military and trade purposes. Of course none of these changes would have taken place had the government not agreed to the trade agreements and industrial tutoring of Europe and the United States. World War 1 also ushered in changes in the government of Japan. These changes were less visible differences and more a change in the ideas of how a government should be structured. Political party government took a long time to take hold. The Meiji Constitution was deliberately vague on the subject of executive responsibility. Sovereignty and final authority in all matters rested with the throne, but at the same time the ruler had to be protected from active participation lest he be found fallible. (Jansen 496)Up until 1921, considered the dawn of party politics in Japan, the government system was set up of four main parts. A powerful Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister, was in control of local government and national police. (The Emperor was theoretically head of the armed services, but generals and admirals were selected by the staff of the armed services to protect the Emperor from participation) A Privy Council made of imperial appointees had to approve of important decisions on national policy or the constitution. • 4. The Tesla Model X Analysis The Tesla Model X is a 7 passenger, all electric sport utility vehicle and has already been deemed the fastest (and cleanest) SUV on the planet. This second model from Tesla Motors (third if you count the limited production/availability Tesla Roadster) was introduced in late September and has promptly gone on sale. While most of us won t be able to afford this six figure SUV even as less costly versions follow next year, we can only dream about owning one or at least seeing its falcon wing doors in action. Lots of information about the Model X has been dispensed over the past few weeks, including the following lesser known facts. 1. Your Model X may protect you from a bioweapon. Or not. It has been said that paranoia is a destroyer (with apologies to the Kinks). But what if THEY are really out to get you? Well, Tesla Motorshas thought about that problem when crafting the Model X. Specifically, a button located on the dashboard when activated is designed to protect you and your passengers from pollution, viruses and bacteria. Inscribed with the international symbol for biological hazard, medical grade air filters are activated to provide life saving protection. But that claim has been disputed with Gizmodo calling out Elon Musk. Although any HEPA filter will protect against bacteria agents such as anthrax or the plague du jour, it won t stop viruses, which are too small to be caught by such filters. Yes, the Model X s filters probably do provide hundreds of times the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The theory of evolution by natural selection was first put forward by Darwin in On the Origin of Species, published in 1859, and his theory is still generally accepted as the best available explanation of the way life on this planet developed. • 6. Pros And Cons Of Conflict Theory Conflict theory is when conflicts arise due to the limited resources, distributing power, and status unevenly also causes conflict between different social classes. Conflict theory helps to explain why our society is unstable. This theory examines the inequalities in money, gender, class, and age within today s society. Some basic principals of conflicttheory include thinking that individuals who are believed to be ranked higher then others obtain most of the benefits in society. The biggest part of conflict theoryis who has the most power, those without power are oppressed by people with more power then them. Another, principal is the way society splits people up into different classes based on their power. This has a lot to do with inequality, different groups of people have different opportunities in life. Karl Marxsplit society into two many groups the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat. No matter how hard it is to obtain a gun, if a criminal wants one they will find a way to get their hands on one. The biggest argument that this group makes is that we do not need more gun control laws we need more education and training. • 7. Applying A Definition For Science Applying a definition for science is a difficult thing to do considering there are various perspectives on the matter. People ranging from novelists to ecologists to journalists to environmentalists have their definitions which each contribute its own part to the meaning. Different parts of the definition include ecosystems, the environment, the hard sciences as well as the scientific method. Paul Keddy is an ecologist whose primary concern is wetlands. His approach focused on the state of these wetlands and how they are important to the Earth as well as to the people. By incorporating facts about this specific ecosystem, he emphasizes its preservation and the significance it holds. Wetlands offer carbon storage, flood control, maintenance of biodiversity, fish production, and aquifer recharge as well as other services (Keddy 141). Keddy explains that by decreasing its size, limits and restrictions are placed on these valuable services. Despite the many amenities wetlands provide, there are still many unknown which leaves a huge dilemma because if people aren t aware of the significance of this particular ecosystem, they won t care much to try and fight for its conservation. Even the ones that are well known, such as the Mississippi River Basin, which is intensively studied, is ...often treated in isolation, which misses two important scientific opportunities: that of learning from work carried out elsewhere, and that of sharing knowledge (Keddy 163). His science is one that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. A Narrative Of An Effective Narrative Is The Point Of View A compelling historical narrative must not only be an honest representation of events but also presents diverse details about them. One of the techniques used by authors in creating an effective narrative is the point of view. The most transparent point of view would be the third person narration. In this kind of narration, the narrator is knowledgeable about every character s opinions. He can describe their actions and relay what is going through their minds. In contrast, first person narrativeuncovers the emotions and opinions of a specific character in the story. The perspective comes from and is focused on a single character. Although first person narration can be a powerful technique if used properly, it is not always effective. My goal in this paper is to expound that a first person narration brings about some complications in the viewpoint and reliability of a historical narrative. First person narration limits the standpoint of the story. Since first person narrative only focuses on one character, the characterization of others are disregarded. For instance, Prince relates a story about his master s daughter and talked about how he often [gets] drunk, and then he would get in a fury with his daughter, and beat her till she was not fit to be seen (13). The experience of the daughter is only seen through the observations of Prince. Her description of her own experiences is not fully discussed. Moreover, the readers are also not presented about what the other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

PERTUSA ORTEGA, E.; CLAVER CORTГ‰S, E.; MOLINA AZORГ ЌN, J. F EURAM, Paris (France), may 2007. Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the viability of hybrid competitive strategies, which combine differentiation and cost elements, and their impact on organisational performance in comparison to pure strategies and stuck in the middle combinations. The analysis carried out on a multisectorial sample of 164 Spanish firms has revealed that a large number of them use different types of hybrid strategies and also that such strategies tend to be associated with higher levels of firm performance, particularly those... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 1 2 The present paper seeks to contribute to this debate about the influence of pure and hybrid strategies on performance in various ways. Firstly, this research study takes a further step toward the generalisation of the results of previous works by carrying out a multisectorial analysis. Secondly, the study has used data about Spanish firms; it must be remembered that empirical research had so far basically centred on US data (Ghobadian, Veettil and O Regan, 2006). In this respect, Spain can prove to be an interesting context for the study of competitive strategies because it is a country which has experienced a significant economic development in recent years, competition via differentiation having acquired more and more importance as opposed to costs. Thirdly, few studies have had as their specific main aim to check the relationship between hybrid strategies and performance. Further theoretical work and additional replications are thus needed to refine methodologies (Campbell Hunt, 2000; Fritz, 2006; Parnell, 1997). The present paper will therefore try to perform a statistical analysis of the effect caused by pure and hybrid competitive strategies on performance. Finally, the stuck in the middle concept has been examined in depth, analysing, too, its implications for performance compared to pure and hybrid strategies, a topic that few studies had dealt with so far. It was a bit embarrassing that after lifting weights for the preceding four months we were still winded by the moderate size hill. We took a break half way up but this was no wasted break. I found an opening off the path and noticed a Koa treeabout three feet high. Then I turned to Mikey and said, this is the reason we came up here. Is that a Koa tree? We were about to leave before coming across four bottles littered on the ground. The bottles were gross looking and things were already beginning to grow on it. We didn t want to bring these with us through the rest of our adventure. So I thought, what would the ancient Hawaiians do? And as I raised my head my sights were locked on a tea leaf plant. I walk over, thank the plant, and pick a couple of leaves from it. I then ripped each leaf in half and began to bundle up the bottles and tie them together. Two bundles were easier to carry than four bottles so we carried them to the fork in the trail and left them there until we got back from our journey. We were back on track, making our way down the left route. I was hopeful but discouraged for the first couple hundred feet, with Mikey taking the lead pointing at every different plant asking Is that a Koa tree? I rebuttal by saying, we literally saw one like ten minutes ago. To no surprise his curiosity or his inner child proceeded with the questions. One tree exposed itself after the other until it seemed as all the trees bordering the trail became Koa trees. I was dragging my jaw on the floor as I slowly walked under the chattering giants all wearing orange coats around their trunks. Seed pods began to envelope the forest floor so much that Mikey and I lost each other for a while foraging on the trail. We soon got more than a hundred seeds so decided to just relax under ... The Metropolitan Theatre was considered to be the Grand Dame of Manila and also as the crown jewel of the theatres in Manila. The person behind the unique design of the theatre was Arch. • 13. Theme Of Classism In Slumdog Millionaire Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, is a movie about the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year old orphan, and his underdog performance on India s version of the show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? . Jamal goes all the way, winning 20 million rupees (the currency of India). After the end of the first night, Jamal gets arrested and accused of cheating. While in the police station, he is brutally beaten and heavily interrogated as to how he, a slumdog (a child who was raised in the slums), knows all of the answers. Trying to prove his innocence, he reflects back on his harsh childhood. He proclaims that the reasoning for him knowing all of the answers is because of all of the rough experiences he had as a child. The movie flashes back to the moments in which he learned the answers. Severe poverty, underdevelopment, starvation, violence, and dirtiness are clearly portrayed in the rugged slums of Mumbai during these flashbacks. The other side is shown, too, with Javed, who is a slumlord and lives in a massive, guarded mansion. Classism is the reason for both sides of the spectrum. Slumdog Millionaire portrays the high power society and extreme classism in India and the oppression and discriminationthat derives from it. Classism is one of the most prominent issues portrayed within Slumdog Millionaire. According to Merriam Webster, a simple definition of classism is prejudice or discrimination based on class . Conservation of Linear Momentum Name Institution Table of contents Objective2 Results and Graphs2 Discussion3 Summary and Conclusion3 References4 Data Sheet4 Sample Calculations6 Conservation of Linear Momentum Objective The primary goal of this experiment was to study the force that a jet generates on hemispherical, flat, and conical surfaces. Further, the experiment exposed students to the concept of linear momentum conservation by observing forces that a jet of water exerts on objects with different shapes. Results and Graphs Figure 1: Forces Acting on the x and y axis As can be seen, the forces that act on the x direction are caused by pressure at sections 1 and 2. Similarly, an expression that relates the conservation of linear momentum in the Y direction can be developed. Discussion Although the experiment was successful, some errors occurred during the experiment that made most values to deviate from the expected ones. Generally, both fixed and random errors were observed (Mitchell Worledge, 2015). The random errors, in this case, resulted into statistical fluctuations in the measured data because of the limitations in precision measurement. Additionally, the random errors occurred due to inability to take the same measurements as the expected ones. Furthermore, fixed errors were responsible for reduced inaccuracies in the values obtained (Valiani Caleffi, 2011). However, the best way to minimize random errors is by averaging ... Tiny sparks fluttered around them, making Jessica and Isalia giggle with joy. • 17. Golden Age Of Athens Athens had what is known as its Golden Age between 480 and 430 BCE, and while it was a relatively short period of time, it laid the foundations of western civilization. As the Golden Age dawned, the autonomous poleis (city states) that had formed in the preceding two to three centuries had set aside their differences and united to face the threat of invasion posed by the Persian Empire. Though vastly outnumbered, the Greeks had finally defeated the Persian armies in 480 BCE. In the years of peace that followed, the Greeks made significant advances in art, literature, science and philosophy, as pride and patriotism drove them to greater heights of creativity and in Athens, an experiment with a new kind of government flourished under the statesman Pericles. Prior to about 600 BCE, Athens had been an oligarchy, with an aristocratic minority controlling its government. But enlightened Athenian leaders began instituting reforms to the city s government between 600 and 500 BCE. Solon (c. 638 558 BCE) introduced a new code of laws that was less harsh than Athens existing legal code (laid out by an Athenian statesman called Draco, hence the term draconian to describe repressive laws) , and also set up a Popular Assembly of Citizens, although a council of aristocrats still made the laws. Cleisthenes (c. 570 508 BCE) known as the Father of Democracy expanded democracy still further, creating a Council of 500, which consisted of 50 representatives from each Greek tribe. He ... Exxon Valdez and the Recovery of Prince William Sound Essay Exxon Valdez and the Recovery of Prince William Sound Approximately eleven years ago, an area of Alaska s southern coast known as Prince William Sound was a disaster area. A nauseating scent of rotting carcasses and oil filtered through the air. Sea birds screamed in anguish as they fought to survive with oil drenched feathers. Under the surface billions of organisms ceased to live due to the toxicity of the inescapable wrath of the blackened water. Massive cleanup efforts were initiated within a few weeks of the spill and they continued at reduced levels for the next three years. Approximately 14% of the spilled oil was recovered by cleanup crews (Newsweek, p.50). As a result of these efforts and natural weathering, little oil from the spill remained in the affected area by 1992. However, according to the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration some oil residues are still found under the ocean surface in areas sheltered from wind and waves. Yet, these residues are highly weathered and the toxicity is reduced to levels tolerable by organisms in the water (7). Nonetheless, the magnitude and timing of the Exxon Valdez oil spillraised immediate concerns about possible effects on marine fish and wildlife and prospects that these effects might be long lasting. Professors John Wiens and David Page spent many years studying theses effects of the oil spill and they presented their findings at the International Oil Spill Conference in Seattle, March 8 11, 1999. First, he faced a cultural conflict between his mother and father s aspirations regarding his destiny. His mother wanted Antonio to pursue a future life as a priest, while his father wanted Antonio to be a cowboy. Similarly, I grappled with the same battle as a child. My mother wanted me to pursue medicine, while my father wanted me to become an engineer and follow their footsteps. Just like Antonio had learned from Ultima, this was an element I had to decide for myself. I found out from life experiences that my passion for science, the human body, and the desire to prolong and save people s lives, ultimately made my decision to pursue medicine. Another cultural conflict he faced was between his Spanish speaking self and his English speaking schoolmates. Throughout his life, he had followed the Spanish culture of his family, who mainly spoke Spanish in their home. His first day of school, he noticed that his English speaking schoolmates were less accepting of his culture when he spoke Spanish in front of the class and unpacked his lunch filled with Hispanic food, which differed from the sandwiches his schoolmates brought for lunch. Lombardi, a retired American football coach, dispels the myth that leaders are born, but instead are the result of years of strenuous effort. As Lombardi depicts, being a leader is not easy, but a difficult task for the beholder. This feeling creates tension between the desire to become a leader and the difficulty of becoming one. Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov writes about these same tensions throughout his short story Through the Snow. He compares the difficult tasks of a leader to that of someone treading through virgin snow in order to clear a path (Shalamov 320). Varlam Shalamov states, My stories are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a leader, it can be very difficult for them to influence their followers. Major Jacob W. Miller states that there are three types of outcomes that can occur: resistance, compliance, and commitment (Miller 214). The optimal outcome is commitment because the followers are willing to give maximum effort in order to finish the order. The followers are likely to strive for successful completion that exceeds standards (Miller 218). As seen in Through the Snow the followers are committed to the task. They do not lackadaisically stroll through the snow, but instead tramp down virgin snow, a place where man s foot has never trodden (Shalamov 320). Notion of light skin in the United States of America is an example of a location where colorism thrives: supremacy is almost automatically associated with lighter complexion, so external characteristic is an indication of superiority. Colorism, in its simplest definition, is a discrimination based on the skin tone. Colorism is a more concrete form of racism, which is also defined as discriminatory treatment of individuals falling within the same racial group on the basis of skin color (Herring Keith in Yancey, 2004). • 36. Analysis Of Martinrea s Debt And Equity Ratio What is surprising, however, is that despite a 51% increase in long term debt during 2014, Martinrea s debt to equity ratio actually decreased. A closer look at the notes to the financial statements reveals the cause of this decrease. First, while long term debt increased significantly during 2014, the 12% increase in overall liabilities was less significant. As the result of their purchase of the remainder of Honsel Aluminum, Martinrea removed a liability from their balance sheetwhich previously represented a put option that could force them to purchase this remaining portion. Martinrea ended up making the purchase before this option was exercised, and the removal of this liability dampened the increase in total liabilities. Second, the acquisition of Honsel significantly removed the equity attributable to a non controlling interest, causing a 24% increase in equity attributable to the shareholders of the company (despite total equity only increasing marginally). These two factors lead to a decrease in Martinrea s debt to equity ratio. Shareholder s Equity Total shareholders equity increased $21,735,000 or 3.9% YoY. Capital stockand contributed surplus increases were quite insignificant, but accumulated other comprehensive income increased 114.4% YoY, and the accumulated deficit decreased $77,104,000 or 54.2% YoY. Other equity is now at zero from ($154,239,000) last year (refer to financial liability) due to the final payment made for the remaining 45% stake in Honsel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the first time researchers have the opportunity to manipulate essentially any gene in a plethora of cells and organisms, using targeted nucleases that were designed for sequence specific binding of the DNA. • 47. The Underground Railroad Analysis Unraveling History within The Underground Railroad While Colson Whiteheads, The Underground Railroad (2016) memorializes slavery, it also broadens our otherwise unrealistic views of American history. The novel follows a young slave girl, Cora, on her historic venture through delusional America on the Underground Railroad, shortly after the congress passed the Compromise of 1850 (285). As Cora travels north, she discovers that every state individually expresses different attributes of slavery(68). The Compromise of 1850 forced northerners to return all found fugitive slaves back to the south (TC1850). During an interview with David Bianculli, Whitehead mentions that the default view of slavery consists of strict slave catcher s and master s interpretations, rather than the historical aspects of slavery (8 Aug. 2016). This observation allows him to focus on a fictional storyline that derives nonfictional events in history. In, The Underground Railroad, Whitehead emphasizes an alternate view of the American history pertaining to the institution of slavery. Throughout every elementary History class, educators explain the colonization of America in a crudely oversimplified, unrealistic way.
