A Picture Of The Gulag Labor Camps
In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface,
we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor
reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the
foundations of justice from beneath new generations. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said in his impactful
narrative that paints a picture of the Gulag labor camps in Soviet Russia through personal experience,
eyewitness testimony and interviews, and primary research material. Solzhenitsyn is describing the
silence that survivors of the Gulag were forced to exhibit after staring terror and fear directly in the
face during their time in the Gulag. The silence Solzhenitsyn is describing, is claimed to be one of the
reason the Gulag is often not given the attention in history books and in the forefront of our minds that
the Gulag deserves. The Gulag is believed to be one of the most horrible and inhuman acts of the 20th
century, yet western society tends to shy away from mentioning the Gulag when discussing tragedy.
This paper will examine historians views on the Gulag and why it has been overlooked in history as
the horrible tragedy it was and the impact that this silence has had, not only on the survivors, but also
the impact it has had on Russia and its society as a whole.

Two Great Short Stories Read by Many are A Rose for Emily...
Two of the greatest short stories written back in late 19th and early 20th centuries are still read by
many people. The two stories are A Rose for Emily written by William Faulkner and Guy De
Maupassant s The Necklace . Faulkner s book is about a woman named Emily Grierson s life and her
horrible secret she hides. The other book is about a materialistic woman named Mathilde Loisel loses
a fake necklace and find out to be a fake one after ten years later. Although these stories are written
about fifty years apart and written from two different countries, these two stories have many
similarities and differences. A Rose for Emily and The Necklace are juxtaposed with the main
characters, usage of symbolism on the title, and the tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also these items can reflect the strong symbolism in it. Faulkner used a rose, but De Maupassant used
the necklace to represent the main character s emotions in two items. The difference in those symbols
is that a rose has only appeared on the title but the necklace is the whole flow of the story. Faulkner
leaves the reader to interpret the rose s symbolic meaning. The rose is usually a powerful symbol of
love, it always has been, and portrays an everlasting beauty. Moreover, the rose has been used for
centuries to illustrate an eternal type of love and faithfulness. Therefore, readers can infer the meaning
that the rose present in the title, and portray it to Emily that she does not have love in her life. The
necklace, however it is the important items that lead to the climax of the story. It is pretty but
worthless, shows the awareness of appearance and real world. Also, the fake necklace shows Mathilde
s desire to be something she is not. The last comparison about these two narratives about tone. The
tone of two narratives is very ironic. There are many ironies to be found in A Rose for Emily. One of
the examples, when she is speaking with the Aldermen. They are trying to convince Emily to pay her
taxes and she simply repeated a person s name who has been dead for ten years. The other story The
Necklace also have many ironical quotes. Mathilde Loisel really wants to be in the upper class society,
but because she shows persistence borrowing the

The Use Of Weather In Santa Ana By Joan Didion
In the essay Santa Ana Joan Didion uses a variety of rhetorical devices to broadcast the idea that the
weather can actually set the mood and reputation of a town. She also show cases that the attitude of
people around us can have an effect on the way we view things. I can relate to this because most of the
time we learn about things it is from our peers, so their attitude will wear off on us when we come into
that situation. With this essay she emphasizes that a place can be very important for he because of
what it represents. I can agree with her on this because there are several places for me that represent
important experiences that I ve had in my life.
The speaker references the horrible weather in Santa Ana and how the wind could change the mindset
of the people who live there. She describes it as being depressing the type of weather that no one liked
yet it effected everyone. She describes the town in a very unearthly manner. She speaks of how the
wind in Santa Ana would commonly underestimated because there were so many people from other
countries who believed that California s weather was monotone, meaning that it always stayed the
same with no extremes. She expresses her truth that the weather infected the air with violence.
Throughout the essay she is uneasy which is shown by her use of mysterious words.
The author begins the essay with a tone that is kind of spooky which puts the reader in an unsettling
mindset. There is something uneasy in the Los Angeles air this afternoon, some unnatural stillness,
some tension. What it means is that tonight a Santa Ana will begin to blow, a hot wind from the
northeast whining down through the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes, blowing up sand storms out
along Route 66, drying the hills and the nerves to flash point. Here she uses imagery to assist her
audience in becoming as engaged in her surroundings as she is. Doing this also helps her audience feel
the same way as the speaker, who seems to be frightened and anxious about what could happen next.
She is told stories of how the natives responded to the wind changing the way it is currently. As she is
listens to the stories of the town it s as if she is listening to stories that go along with a haunted house

Neuromuscular Junction Research Paper
The neuromuscular junction is where the nerve meets our muscles. To be able to move, we would
need an impulse sent from our brain to our muscles. The nerve impulse gets sent to our muscles from
the CNS, which leads to our muscles contracting. The nervous impulse that s sent to the CNS is called
the action potential, the impulse that sends a signal to our muscles is known as the motor neurones.
For our muscles to contract we need a nervous impulse, the end of our nerves are called the synaptic
knob, this hits the vesicles and releases acetylcholine. The acetylcholine then goes through the cleft
(the gap between the synaptic knob and the muscle) and tells the muscles to contract, if it doesn t go
through the cleft our muscles will not contract, this is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nervous impulse will only reach the muscle fibres if the signal from the CNS is strong enough.
This also is the all or nothing principle because if the strength of the signal is not strong enough the
motor unit will contract, but if the strength of the signal is strong enough then all of the motor unit will
contract. The function of the motor unit is to basically allow movement, so without these muscle
fibres we won t be able to have movement. There are two type of muscle fibres, fast twitch and slow
twitch. The slow twitch muscle fibres are good for activities such as endurance events, e.g. the
marathon. This is because these muscles don t get tired during exercise. The fast twitch muscle fibres
get tired too quickly because they are used for quick, sharp events such as 100m sprint so this can
result in fatigue and therefore can build up lactic acid which will result in cramps
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/body/factfiles/fastandslowtwitch/soleus.shtml) so if we
didn t have slow or fast twitch fibres, we wouldn t be able to participate in them type of

trunks it was covered by woven grass mats. They often ate oysters and was their primary food source.
They also eat berries and nuts when they cannot eat oysters. The Atakapa tribe were warriors and

William Wallace Quotes
Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway. When I hear that quote, there s one person
that stands out to me, William Wallace. You may know everything about him, some about him, or
absolutely nothing. William Wallace was Scottish and lost his father at a very young age. Of course,
he didn t agree with the government at this time, which he never does in his life span. His
independence, strength, and courage will be seen in astonishing ways. As you can tell, his life was
pretty difficult, losing his father so early in life and growing up without him. Later in his life, he grew
strong and found the love of his life, Marion Braidfute. They married in secret because her parents did
not approve of him. Shortly after the two were

Annotated Bibliography On Forensic Populations
Overall, the three articles discussed in this annotated bibliography provide direction for social workers
and researchers who are looking to employ a holistic and client centered approach to working with
forensic populations. Forensic populations are often affected by multiple biopsychosocial systems
such as: mental illness, substance use disorders, deviant sexual thoughts and behaviors, and criminal
behavior. Although the biopsychosocial systems which affect forensic populations are often
intersecting and inter related, it can become necessary to individuate and control for these systems
within research in order to better ascertain the efficacy of a desired treatment model. Given that I have

Same Sex Marriage Content Analysis Paper
Homosexuality is a global topic of debate. The topic of homosexuality has been discussed constantly
throughout various media outlets and is a hot topic in the republican primary. A number of debates
have been argued in regard to the rights of homosexuals. One of the most hotly debated subjects is the
rights of homosexual couples. This controversial topic has been widely debated for a number of years.
However, the trend toward globally accepting same sex marriage is on the rise. States such as
Massachusetts have passed laws to make the union of same sex marriages legal. Other states have
taken initial steps toward accepting same sex marriage. Whereas others are considering laws and

The rules that I used to help choose what category the content and tones the articles I read fell under
were fairly simple. Something such Surprisingly speeches were encouraging to organizers of the
movement would be marked as something positive. A paragraph with something like Activists were
under attack in Washington would be noted as a negative. A main goal through out this process was to
make sure I remained constant. This provided for the most and accurate results throughout the content
analysis process.

neutral context by the author and took up 14.192% of the content in my categories that I was looking
into. When it came down to what was being covered I found that most organizations to either be
positive or very negative. The only neutral stance I found was the Mormons. Catholics and
Republicans seemed to be very against the idea saying that it would infringe on people rights and is
against the constitution.

Why Do Steroid Use Pro-Enhancing Drugs Increase Doping In...
Doping in sports has caused a lot of controversy throughout the years in the sports world from youth
sports to the professionals. The World Anti Doping Agency does their best to catch all the drug users
but falls short with some people. This causes for an unfair advantage and goes against the true value of
sport. It can make these players stronger and more athletic which causes more excitement for the fans
to watch, more revenue for teams, and growing popularity. Using performance enhancing drugs is
banned in almost every sport, but with the allowed use of them could bring to the players and the
sports teams themselves, could outweigh the negative effects of them being used in sports. Heightened

D s should be allowed is because of the healing factor they can provide to the players. When a player
is injured it not only hurts the injured person, but also the organization. With steroids, it can increase
the rate of recovery to the injured person. As stated by Richard Salcido, MD, Professor and Chairman
of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System said
...steroid use may aid in the healing of experimentally derived muscle contusion and injury... (Salcido,
Anabolic Steroids and Wound Healing ). If this does in fact increase the healing of injured athletes,
then it allows for them to be out for a shorter amount of time, which again ties into more revenue
coming into these organizations because the best of the best athletes is not staying injured for very
long. Using these drugs even has the chance to prevent injuries. As stated in Steroids by David J.

localized swelling, redness and tenderness aspects of inflammation. With its ability to do these things

Sand Flies Research Paper
Sand flies (Diptera: Nematocera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) are a medically important group of
insects in Tropical and Sub tropical regions of the World (Rodani, 1840). They are small hairy yellow

easy to recognize: when at rest, they characteristically hold their wings at an angle above the
abdomen; they are hairy; and they typically hop around on the host before settling down to bite

College Essay On Paying College Athletes
Paying College Athletes
Many people believe that college athletes should be paid for how much revenue they bring to their
school. However, there are also people who think they should not get paid because they already have
numerous advantages that other students do not have. Student athletes at the Division 1 level that play
men s basketball and football should not necessarily be paid a salary but should be able to make
money off of their accomplishments, especially if we hold them on a high pedestal as we do now. It
may seem unfair only to pay those who play men s basketball and football, but the reason why these
two sports are the most reasonable is that they bring in the most revenue for the schools out of the
major sports that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this, they say it would provide an unfair advantage to the other students if these athletes
get both a free education as well as get paid at the same time to play a sport (Yankah). Others say that
they are just kids and do not need that kind of financial pressure at such a young age. Furthermore,
athletes should not be paid because there just is not enough money in the school, and there would be
an uneven pay between sports based on general revenue (time). People even say that if the NCAA
were to pay athletes, it would take away from the importance of an education and these players would
not take their education seriously(lemmons). All these reasons and much more support why college
athletes should NOT be paid. However, there are just as many points to argue why they should be
paid. First of all, college athletes at the Division 1 level spend more than 43.3 hours per week to his
sport which is 3.3 more hours than the average American work week (Edelman). Secondly, while the
NCAA claims these athletes are just students, the NCAA s tournament schedules require college
athletes to miss classes for nationally televised games that bring in revenue (Edelman). Thirdly, the
play of teams and players can help bring in more students to the school. For example, the year that
Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie won the Heisman Trophy as the nation s outstanding college
football player, Boston College s

Vincent Van Gogh And His Life
In essence of this twenty first (21st) Century, the life of Vincent Van Gogh; has become more of a
legend with a substantial figure among painters and western art in the society today. Vincent Van Gogh
is said to be a person with persevering characteristics due to all the failures he encountered in his
career path from being a minister like his father to dealing in arts like his uncle (Blumer,2002) before
becoming the successful painter, we all acknowledge in the world today. However, Vincent Van Gogh
is practically known to be the subject discussed in midst of artists, historians, and psychologists
worldwide based on his artworks, his mental health issues and cutting off his left ear.
In brief, Vincent Willem Van Gogh is a well known Dutch post impressionist painter, born to an
austere country ministering father, and an artistic mother on March 30, 1853, in Groot Zundert,
Netherlands, and died as a result of gunshot wound to the chest in the arms of his brother Theo on July
29, 1890 in Auvers sur Oise, France (Vincent, n.d.). In the wake of recent discoveries, there have been
speculations whether the death of Vincent Van Gogh was a suicidal or murderous act; which implies
whether Van Gogh shot himself or someone else did (Smith Naifeh, 2014). It is believed the death of
Van Gogh is yet a mystery basically lingering around to be solved. Nevertheless, Vincent Van Gogh
was the oldest of his siblings, three sisters and two brothers; despite the fact his mother lost her

Rick Perry s Decision On The Hpv Vaccine Essay
Rick Perry s Decision on the HPV Vaccine
Abstract
A very significant portion of a well functioning democratic society is obtaining individuals who will
be obligated by moral decision making regarding political and personal policies. This paper is going to
discuss Rick Perry s decision to mandate that all girls eleven years and older receive the HPV vaccine
before entering the six grade which has caused some controversy among the people of Texas. Positive
and negative features of the decision will be discussed from four different articles that help provide
clarity on the matter.
Introduction
Throughout the years, democracy has been the system of government in The United States of
America. Democracy is a society in which individuals participate in the decision making process of
establishments that make decisions or execute actions that affect them. A democracy also holds the
establishments or organizations fully accountable for the decisions or actions that may infringe on
their human rights. A perfect example of democracy in action is recollecting the law passed by
Governor Rick Perry, in Texas, that mandated that all girls, eleven years and older, receive a vaccine
for a sexually transmitted disease, also known as the HPV vaccine. This stirred a lot of controversy
among many Texas residents deciding whether or not it was the right move in order to progress as a
state.

Governor Perry s decision concerning the HPV vaccine is highly controversial, but there are

After graduating from Hollins College and getting a house with her husband, a creek called

Many of Dillard s essays are focused on life, death and their relationship with nature. It is unclear why
she writes so much about death because she had not experienced death close to her when she was

Dillard was born in 1945, a very important year in America. She was born on the exact day Hitler
killed himself. Just days after, World War II ended on May 8th. Dillard grew up in a time of economic
prosperity. The 50 s were marked by the red scare, Elvis, conservative yet social people, and the

The English System Of Criminal Law In The United States
Introduction and Historical Background
Every society in which we live, from the remote tribe to the most technologically advanced culture has
rules in which by which it operates. Most societies have written rules governing behaviour and a set of
punishment for those who break the rules. These can be referred to as the society s laws.
The law is defined as is defined as the body of rules of conduct created by the government and
enforced by government authority. Without any rules or behaviour, life in a group would be difficult, if
not impossible. In order to master criminal law, there must be an understanding of the context in
which criminal law exists.
The United States has a system of law derived from the English system of Common Law. As the
original English settlers arrived in the new world, they brought with them a well developed system of
justice. This English system of law was common to all persons and all areas in the English empire, so
it came to be referred to as the Common Law. Common Law is founded on the idea that if one set of
facts yields a decision in one case, the same set of facts should yield the decision in the next case. For
example if a judge in Manchester ruled that stealing a goat was a crime, a judge in London should rule
the same way. Under Common law, judges look to similar cases decided before and decide new cases
the same way. This helps make the legal system predictable and stable. Using previous judgements in
related cases to judge an ongoing

I Am Not One Standard Belief
I am not one to limit myself of one standard belief. I believe that anybody could offer their opinion
and change my whole mind set on an issue. Therefore, there needs to be a party that accepts change

multiple opinions on one or more subjects and develop in different directions, divergence. The beliefs
that my party holds are subject to change due to the opinions and ideas of others. This party s ideas

of the people will be different but the decisions will be compromises. The views of my party are not

Ticket Prices
The article Ticket Price Determination in Professional Sports: An Empirical Analysis of the NBA,
NFL, NHL, and Major League Baseball. was researched and created by two economists named,
Patrick Rishe and Michael Mondello. The basis of this article was to analyze why the prices of tickets
tend to vary from city to city within each league and also to provide the reader with information
regarding whether ticket price increases are tied to changes in team payroll. Rishe and Mondello
created and empirical model to get a more precise measurement than that of regressions done in the
past. With this analysis Rishe and Mondello wanted to understand the impacts of salary caps on ticket
price within a league so they involved two leagues without a salary ... Show more content on

Going forward, one of the most notable findings in this regression is the significance of team payroll
and ticket prices for the NHL. One might expect these two variables to be correlated since there is no
salary cap, but in fact in the early stages of the test period Rishe and Mondello discovered that the
NBA, despite having a salary cap, has a larger payroll dispersion than the NHL. NHL s payroll
dispersion is relatively stable, which could be the reason why this variable is statically insignificant.
Recent success has had more of an impact on the NBA and the NFL compared to the NHL and MLB.
This might be due to the strong correlation between winning and payrolls in cap free sports. To
conclude the average ticket prices has had a strong upward trend in football and baseball, on the other
hand the NHL and NBA seem stagnate possibly due to consumer preference in the last six years. The
second equation in this trial explains the factors that cause seasonal price changes within each league.
Once again playing in a new facility for a season opener suggests the size of seasonal price tickets will
increase for an individual team in any league. The second factor in this equation is the team s post
season success, the result showed that for a team in any league that made it to the playoffs
significantly raised ticket prices. Additionally, the ticket prices rose for only the NHL and NFL if a
team reached the championship. Over the period of time examined NBA and NHL teams displayed a
smaller ticket price increase seasonally, due to the stagnate demand to watch those two

Positive And Disadvantages Of SCT In Secondary Schools
Discuss the positive and negative effect of implementing small class teaching in Hong Kong
secondary school
Arick Wong
Small class teaching (SCT) which is widely defined as a teaching in a class of less than 20 pupils has
already implemented in many countries [1], [2]. The Hong Kong government has also started
implementing SCT in primary school from 2009 progressively while implementing SCT in secondary
school is still a debatable issue [3].
The first group of primary students studying in small class would graduate in 2016. Discussing the
issue related to the next generation, some educators believe that the continuance of the STC policy at
secondary school could maximise the benefit of schooling, but others are concerned about the cost and
effectiveness of SCT. This paper examines both the arguments for and against implementing SCT in
secondary school in Hong Kong and provides suggestions based on these arguments.
SCT empowers teachers to conduct more individualised instruction for disadvantaged pupils and ...

SCT could narrow students achievement gap and enhance their average academic performance.
However, SCT would weaken students development of groupism and interpersonal skills. The
effectiveness of SCT would also be minified due to the lacking in professional training for teachers.
Considering these arguments comprehensively, the writer believes that implementing SCT could be
highly advantageous to secondary education, and the negative effects of it is preventable. The schools
could encourage students to conduct class gathering without assistance from teachers in order to
deepen their peer relationships. The government could collaborate with the universities for modifying
the PGDE programme and conduct SCT workshops at school for teachers training. The government
should apply SCT with sufficient support to approach quality secondary

The Early Renaissance Art in Florence
The early Renaissance art in Florence focused on an elaborate, Gothic style of painting; very formal
and traditional, yet there was always something that seemed to be lacking. Perspective and depth were
two very important qualities in painting, yet up until the time of young Masaccio, (born Tommaso
Guidi), paintings were beautiful, but seemed to just be art that hung on the wall. In Masaccio s work,
rather than recede in space, the figures seem to come forward (Cole 120). He may not have known it
at the time, but his style of painting would influence many painters well after his death; Donatello,
Michelangelo, and so on. Masaccio may have only painted for a total of 8 years, but during those 8
years he revolutionized not only the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has undergone many repairs, and has been to many places, so it can sometimes be hard to really see
past all of the new and really see what Masaccio created. Yet, really looking past what has been
changed, a viewer can really see Masaccio s talent: Masaccio s perspective design of the vault was
created within the surface geometry. The foreshortened pattern of coffers could be calculated using
simple geometry (Polzer 1). Masaccio was not just an artist, but also used basic math and geometry
skills to really create that realism in his works. This shows that he was also very intellectual as well as
creative, and became part of another era of painting that used skills such as geometry, and not just
creativity, in creating art. The Holy Trinity truly creates the illusion of Christ being crucified right in
that archway, and that the viewers could just walk right in and become a part of the painting. As James
Ackerman says, the magnificent vault arching over the austere figures in Masaccio s fresco [is] an
utterly convincing illusion of architectural form extending into space (Achkerman 171). In this piece,
Masaccio s use of vanishing points and linear perspective draw the spectator s eye to the center of the
painting, right below the

Van Gogh s Starry Night
The night sky depicted by Van Gogh in the Starry Night painting is completed with of brightly colored
stars, twisting clouds, and a bright crescent moon. This work almost has a dot to dot effect on the
viewer s eyes because of the swirling motions moving in a circle through the middle of the painting,
but Van Gogh uses the large tree and bright moon on different sides of the paper to give the painting
unity. Starry Night is arguably one of Van Gogh s best paintings because of the excellent use of all the
elements of art, which is hard to achieve in one piece of artwork. One strong aspect of this painting is
it has a strong sense of both harmony and unity. The painting achieves harmony by using similar
elements throughout the work and unity by making a quality of wholeness or oneness to the painting.
Even though there are many different hues in this painting none have an overpowering feeling over the
work which brings wholeness to the work. The work has repetition and rhythm of colors such as blue
and patterns like the swirling brush strokes which brings many elements throughout the work.
Likewise, the painting is a great example of the law of thirds which is a guideline that applies to the
process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs. If the viewer

Although it is hard to use all of these elements Van Gogh did it in an excellent manner, with nothing in
this painting being overpowering to the viewer s eye. This may be the reason for the great success for
Van Gogh and his piece. This piece was so different for the era that Van Gogh did not live to see his
paintings success, even though he was not successful in his lifetime most of his pieces are still
remembered today for their strong composition and

Analysis Of A Farewell By Amy Levy
A Farewell by Amy Levy reflects the life of an outsider in the 19th century. The speaker portrays the
internal battle that Levy faces in a racist and sexist society as being not only Jewish but a strong
feminist and lesbian. By living through the speaker Levy is able to express her deepest thoughts and
beliefs about contemporary society, and how it has come to affect her ultimately causing her to take
her own life. The poem immediately sets a tone of unhappiness that is constant throughout the poem.
The speaker describes the setting of the scene: the sad rain falls from Heaven (l.1). The sad rain
indicates the darker state of an unjust civilization and how it causes the speaker to become depressed.
The word heaven is used to signify that even God looks down on mankind and deems it unfair.
Heaven also gives the poem religious context which may be related to Levy being Jewish in a
dominating Christian society and how this causes her to be discriminated against. The speaker realizes
their personal truths while they look from outside culture inwards. A window is used to signify a
barrier between the speaker and the general public. The society that the speaker lives in is unjust and
causes the speaker to feel foreign in her own culture, and thus relates to Amy Levy s present barriers
as a young Jewish woman who wishes for acceptance. The speaker sadly says, I am sitting here at my
window (l. 3), which represents the life she cannot have but has to watch on the other side of

Brave New World By Aldous Huxley
In the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the character John the Savage is brought from his
homeland of Malpais to London. When he arrives he finds that this world is very different from his
own. Saddened and angered by the injustice of the society, he attempts to isolate himself from the
world. John the Savage s experience of being exiled from Malpais was enriching in that it showed him
the true nature of the Other Place and alienating in that he was separated from his culture and not able
to integrate into the new one. This illuminates the meaning of the work in that it shows the negative
side of the utopian society. John the Savage s exile from his homeland was enriching in that it showed
him the true nature of the Other Place. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Don t you even understand what manhood and freedom are? (Huxley 212 213) This quote shows how
he became aware of the injustice of the system. His discovery of the true nature of the Other Place was
an enriching experience. It allowed him to no longer wonder about what the outside world was like
and to no longer hold an idea in high regard that was not worthy of it. The truth is better than the lie
and in learning the truth, John was enriched by his experience of being cut off from his homeland.
John the Savage s exile from his homeland was alienating in that it separated him from his culture and
he was not able to integrate into the new one. John the Savage grew up in a society with very different
views from that of the society in London. It was very difficult for him to not be around other people
who shared similar ideas with him. This is exemplified by the quote ... Listen, Lenina; in Malpais
people get married. Get what? The irritation had begun to creep back into her voice. What was he
talking about now? For always. They make a promise to live together for always. What a horrible
idea! Lenina was genuinely shocked. (Huxley 191) He was unable to connect with anyone on a deep
level because of this intrinsic difference between them. Therefore, this experience was alienating for
him because he was set apart from the rest of the society. The experience was so alienating that John
the Savage removed himself from the society around him. I shall go away

The History Of The Sicarii And Hashshahin
The history of terrorism goes back as far as the 11Th century. The Sicarii and the Hashshahin were a
group of assassins. The Sicarii were thought to be followers of Judas of Galillee that operated within
Jerusalem. Their tactics included selective, symbolic assassinations; more general assassination along
with destruction or plundering of the property of the wealthy and powerful; and kidnapping (Horsley
1979,439). The Hashshashin or assassins were secretive set emerging around the 11Th century that
had ties to Iran and Syria. Also known as the order of assassins, these individual, like the Sicarii, were
associated with carrying out attacks against those in power (Horsley 1979, 439). These two groups

1960 s Music Influence
Music In The 1960 s and its Influence The 1960 s music was influenced from the 1950 s genres and
the artists and groups during that time. Some artists and groups that helped influence the music in the
60s were Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, the Drifters and many more. All these artists
helped paved the way for the music of the 1960 s. In the 1960 s there were many different styles of
music ranging from rock n roll, country, blues and R B, garage rock, girl groups, surf and other bands.
During this time many knew styles of music were just starting to come about. Many people were
trying to find themselves or talk about the problems that are going on around them during this time
using all these different types of musical outlets. Let s take a look at all the different styles of music.
The 1960 s was big on rock n roll, many groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and many more
were becoming very popular during this time. Elvis Presley and others have paved the way for these
newer and younger groups. Many companies were signing these groups onto their labels because of
their popularity. Rock music was combination of many different styles of music such as country, R B,

Surf music was really different from the the rest of the other types of genres that came out during this
time because it had a certain type of twang to the sound. Surf music began as instrumental dance
music in the 60 s and the sound was mostly dominated by electric guitar. The music was at a medium
to fast tempo so everyone could dance to and have a good time. Surf music was originated in southern
California because surfing was very popular on the West Coast. The Beach Boys, The Challengers,
The Surfaris and The Lively Ones are names of just a few of the surf bands back in the

The School Of New Jersey
Institutions of higher education often struggle to find strategies that successfully engage students in
learning. In the article Faculty Work, Student Success, Colleen Flaherty attempts to address this
problem by analyzing the benefits that undergraduate research has on students and faculty. However,
she points out that faculty have a hard time balancing the demands of focusing on teaching students
while keeping up with research, without sacrificing the quality of one or both pursuits. Flaherty uses
the College of New Jersey, as an example of an institution that took a risk and did a complete
reformation of their curriculum focusing on the teacher scholar model and undergraduate research
(Flaherty, 2014). Since the implementation of the program in 2004, it had benefited both students and
faculty alike such as increased retention and recruitment rates and increased student faculty
interactions (Flaherty, 2014). The new curriculum lightened the faculty teaching requirement to three
courses a semester than were focused on undergraduate research and scheduled time to pursue their
own research while encouraged to include students in that as well (Flaherty, 2014). While this new
model has worked well for this university to engage students in learning through an emphasis on
undergraduate research and balancing the faculty s workload by changing their curriculum, this model
may just not be feasible for some institutions since they vary greatly in size, focus, and resources, etc.

  • 2. A Picture Of The Gulag Labor Camps In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said in his impactful narrative that paints a picture of the Gulag labor camps in Soviet Russia through personal experience, eyewitness testimony and interviews, and primary research material. Solzhenitsyn is describing the silence that survivors of the Gulag were forced to exhibit after staring terror and fear directly in the face during their time in the Gulag. The silence Solzhenitsyn is describing, is claimed to be one of the reason the Gulag is often not given the attention in history books and in the forefront of our minds that the Gulag deserves. The Gulag is believed to be one of the most horrible and inhuman acts of the 20th century, yet western society tends to shy away from mentioning the Gulag when discussing tragedy. This paper will examine historians views on the Gulag and why it has been overlooked in history as the horrible tragedy it was and the impact that this silence has had, not only on the survivors, but also the impact it has had on Russia and its society as a whole. II. Topic The Gulag translates from Russian to mean main camp administration. The Gulag was a government ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Two Great Short Stories Read by Many are A Rose for Emily... Two of the greatest short stories written back in late 19th and early 20th centuries are still read by many people. The two stories are A Rose for Emily written by William Faulkner and Guy De Maupassant s The Necklace . Faulkner s book is about a woman named Emily Grierson s life and her horrible secret she hides. The other book is about a materialistic woman named Mathilde Loisel loses a fake necklace and find out to be a fake one after ten years later. Although these stories are written about fifty years apart and written from two different countries, these two stories have many similarities and differences. A Rose for Emily and The Necklace are juxtaposed with the main characters, usage of symbolism on the title, and the tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also these items can reflect the strong symbolism in it. Faulkner used a rose, but De Maupassant used the necklace to represent the main character s emotions in two items. The difference in those symbols is that a rose has only appeared on the title but the necklace is the whole flow of the story. Faulkner leaves the reader to interpret the rose s symbolic meaning. The rose is usually a powerful symbol of love, it always has been, and portrays an everlasting beauty. Moreover, the rose has been used for centuries to illustrate an eternal type of love and faithfulness. Therefore, readers can infer the meaning that the rose present in the title, and portray it to Emily that she does not have love in her life. The necklace, however it is the important items that lead to the climax of the story. It is pretty but worthless, shows the awareness of appearance and real world. Also, the fake necklace shows Mathilde s desire to be something she is not. The last comparison about these two narratives about tone. The tone of two narratives is very ironic. There are many ironies to be found in A Rose for Emily. One of the examples, when she is speaking with the Aldermen. They are trying to convince Emily to pay her taxes and she simply repeated a person s name who has been dead for ten years. The other story The Necklace also have many ironical quotes. Mathilde Loisel really wants to be in the upper class society, but because she shows persistence borrowing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Use Of Weather In Santa Ana By Joan Didion In the essay Santa Ana Joan Didion uses a variety of rhetorical devices to broadcast the idea that the weather can actually set the mood and reputation of a town. She also show cases that the attitude of people around us can have an effect on the way we view things. I can relate to this because most of the time we learn about things it is from our peers, so their attitude will wear off on us when we come into that situation. With this essay she emphasizes that a place can be very important for he because of what it represents. I can agree with her on this because there are several places for me that represent important experiences that I ve had in my life. The speaker references the horrible weather in Santa Ana and how the wind could change the mindset of the people who live there. She describes it as being depressing the type of weather that no one liked yet it effected everyone. She describes the town in a very unearthly manner. She speaks of how the wind in Santa Ana would commonly underestimated because there were so many people from other countries who believed that California s weather was monotone, meaning that it always stayed the same with no extremes. She expresses her truth that the weather infected the air with violence. Throughout the essay she is uneasy which is shown by her use of mysterious words. The author begins the essay with a tone that is kind of spooky which puts the reader in an unsettling mindset. There is something uneasy in the Los Angeles air this afternoon, some unnatural stillness, some tension. What it means is that tonight a Santa Ana will begin to blow, a hot wind from the northeast whining down through the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes, blowing up sand storms out along Route 66, drying the hills and the nerves to flash point. Here she uses imagery to assist her audience in becoming as engaged in her surroundings as she is. Doing this also helps her audience feel the same way as the speaker, who seems to be frightened and anxious about what could happen next. She is told stories of how the natives responded to the wind changing the way it is currently. As she is listens to the stories of the town it s as if she is listening to stories that go along with a haunted house ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Neuromuscular Junction Research Paper The neuromuscular junction is where the nerve meets our muscles. To be able to move, we would need an impulse sent from our brain to our muscles. The nerve impulse gets sent to our muscles from the CNS, which leads to our muscles contracting. The nervous impulse that s sent to the CNS is called the action potential, the impulse that sends a signal to our muscles is known as the motor neurones. For our muscles to contract we need a nervous impulse, the end of our nerves are called the synaptic knob, this hits the vesicles and releases acetylcholine. The acetylcholine then goes through the cleft (the gap between the synaptic knob and the muscle) and tells the muscles to contract, if it doesn t go through the cleft our muscles will not contract, this is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The nervous impulse will only reach the muscle fibres if the signal from the CNS is strong enough. This also is the all or nothing principle because if the strength of the signal is not strong enough the motor unit will contract, but if the strength of the signal is strong enough then all of the motor unit will contract. The function of the motor unit is to basically allow movement, so without these muscle fibres we won t be able to have movement. There are two type of muscle fibres, fast twitch and slow twitch. The slow twitch muscle fibres are good for activities such as endurance events, e.g. the marathon. This is because these muscles don t get tired during exercise. The fast twitch muscle fibres get tired too quickly because they are used for quick, sharp events such as 100m sprint so this can result in fatigue and therefore can build up lactic acid which will result in cramps (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/body/factfiles/fastandslowtwitch/soleus.shtml) so if we didn t have slow or fast twitch fibres, we wouldn t be able to participate in them type of ... However, there are also people who think they should not get paid because they already have numerous advantages that other students do not have. Student athletes at the Division 1 level that play men s basketball and football should not necessarily be paid a salary but should be able to make money off of their accomplishments, especially if we hold them on a high pedestal as we do now. Others say that they are just kids and do not need that kind of financial pressure at such a young age. Furthermore, athletes should not be paid because there just is not enough money in the school, and there would be an uneven pay between sports based on general revenue (time). People even say that if the NCAA were to pay athletes, it would take away from the importance of an education and these players would not take their education seriously(lemmons). All these reasons and much more support why college athletes should NOT be paid. However, there are just as many points to argue why they should be paid. First of all, college athletes at the Division 1 level spend more than 43.3 hours per week to his sport which is 3.3 more hours than the average American work week (Edelman). Secondly, while the NCAA claims these athletes are just students, the NCAA s tournament schedules require college athletes to miss classes for nationally televised games that bring in revenue (Edelman). Vincent Van Gogh And His Life In essence of this twenty first (21st) Century, the life of Vincent Van Gogh; has become more of a legend with a substantial figure among painters and western art in the society today. Vincent Van Gogh is said to be a person with persevering characteristics due to all the failures he encountered in his career path from being a minister like his father to dealing in arts like his uncle (Blumer,2002) before becoming the successful painter, we all acknowledge in the world today. However, Vincent Van Gogh is practically known to be the subject discussed in midst of artists, historians, and psychologists worldwide based on his artworks, his mental health issues and cutting off his left ear. In brief, Vincent Willem Van Gogh is a well known Dutch post impressionist painter, born to an austere country ministering father, and an artistic mother on March 30, 1853, in Groot Zundert, Netherlands, and died as a result of gunshot wound to the chest in the arms of his brother Theo on July 29, 1890 in Auvers sur Oise, France (Vincent, n.d.). In the wake of recent discoveries, there have been speculations whether the death of Vincent Van Gogh was a suicidal or murderous act; which implies whether Van Gogh shot himself or someone else did (Smith Naifeh, 2014). It is believed the death of Van Gogh is yet a mystery basically lingering around to be solved. Many of Dillard s essays are focused on life, death and their relationship with nature. It is unclear why she writes so much about death because she had not experienced death close to her when she was writing. Dillard was born in 1945, a very important year in America. She was born on the exact day Hitler killed himself. Just days after, World War II ended on May 8th. Dillard grew up in a time of economic prosperity. The 50 s were marked by the red scare, Elvis, conservative yet social people, and the Korean War. In the 60 s, when Dillard was 15 24, Dillard saw anti Cubism, the Civil Rights Movement, the assassinations of President Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and the first man on the moon. She grew up in a very diverse time where emotions were high then broken down after the assassinations. It was a time that would have influenced her writing very much, especially because she was young and people tend to be more influenced by things when they are young. Dillard is a favorite of critics because she is the youngest to woman to the win Pulitzer prize. • 18. The English System Of Criminal Law In The United States Introduction and Historical Background Every society in which we live, from the remote tribe to the most technologically advanced culture has rules in which by which it operates. Most societies have written rules governing behaviour and a set of punishment for those who break the rules. These can be referred to as the society s laws. The law is defined as is defined as the body of rules of conduct created by the government and enforced by government authority. Without any rules or behaviour, life in a group would be difficult, if not impossible. In order to master criminal law, there must be an understanding of the context in which criminal law exists. The United States has a system of law derived from the English system of Common Law. As the original English settlers arrived in the new world, they brought with them a well developed system of justice. This English system of law was common to all persons and all areas in the English empire, so it came to be referred to as the Common Law. Common Law is founded on the idea that if one set of facts yields a decision in one case, the same set of facts should yield the decision in the next case. For example if a judge in Manchester ruled that stealing a goat was a crime, a judge in London should rule the same way. Under Common law, judges look to similar cases decided before and decide new cases the same way. This helps make the legal system predictable and stable. Using previous judgements in related cases to judge an ongoing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Ticket Prices The article Ticket Price Determination in Professional Sports: An Empirical Analysis of the NBA, NFL, NHL, and Major League Baseball. was researched and created by two economists named, Patrick Rishe and Michael Mondello. The basis of this article was to analyze why the prices of tickets tend to vary from city to city within each league and also to provide the reader with information regarding whether ticket price increases are tied to changes in team payroll. Rishe and Mondello created and empirical model to get a more precise measurement than that of regressions done in the past. With this analysis Rishe and Mondello wanted to understand the impacts of salary caps on ticket price within a league so they involved two leagues without a salary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Going forward, one of the most notable findings in this regression is the significance of team payroll and ticket prices for the NHL. One might expect these two variables to be correlated since there is no salary cap, but in fact in the early stages of the test period Rishe and Mondello discovered that the NBA, despite having a salary cap, has a larger payroll dispersion than the NHL. NHL s payroll dispersion is relatively stable, which could be the reason why this variable is statically insignificant. Recent success has had more of an impact on the NBA and the NFL compared to the NHL and MLB. This might be due to the strong correlation between winning and payrolls in cap free sports. To conclude the average ticket prices has had a strong upward trend in football and baseball, on the other hand the NHL and NBA seem stagnate possibly due to consumer preference in the last six years. The second equation in this trial explains the factors that cause seasonal price changes within each league. Once again playing in a new facility for a season opener suggests the size of seasonal price tickets will increase for an individual team in any league. The second factor in this equation is the team s post season success, the result showed that for a team in any league that made it to the playoffs significantly raised ticket prices. Additionally, the ticket prices rose for only the NHL and NFL if a team reached the championship. Over the period of time examined NBA and NHL teams displayed a smaller ticket price increase seasonally, due to the stagnate demand to watch those two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Positive And Disadvantages Of SCT In Secondary Schools Discuss the positive and negative effect of implementing small class teaching in Hong Kong secondary school Arick Wong Small class teaching (SCT) which is widely defined as a teaching in a class of less than 20 pupils has already implemented in many countries [1], [2]. The Hong Kong government has also started implementing SCT in primary school from 2009 progressively while implementing SCT in secondary school is still a debatable issue [3]. The first group of primary students studying in small class would graduate in 2016. Discussing the issue related to the next generation, some educators believe that the continuance of the STC policy at secondary school could maximise the benefit of schooling, but others are concerned about the cost and effectiveness of SCT. • 23. The Early Renaissance Art in Florence The early Renaissance art in Florence focused on an elaborate, Gothic style of painting; very formal and traditional, yet there was always something that seemed to be lacking. Perspective and depth were two very important qualities in painting, yet up until the time of young Masaccio, (born Tommaso Guidi), paintings were beautiful, but seemed to just be art that hung on the wall. In Masaccio s work, rather than recede in space, the figures seem to come forward (Cole 120). He may not have known it at the time, but his style of painting would influence many painters well after his death; Donatello, Michelangelo, and so on. It has undergone many repairs, and has been to many places, so it can sometimes be hard to really see past all of the new and really see what Masaccio created. Yet, really looking past what has been changed, a viewer can really see Masaccio s talent: Masaccio s perspective design of the vault was created within the surface geometry. The foreshortened pattern of coffers could be calculated using simple geometry (Polzer 1). Masaccio was not just an artist, but also used basic math and geometry skills to really create that realism in his works. This shows that he was also very intellectual as well as creative, and became part of another era of painting that used skills such as geometry, and not just creativity, in creating art. The Holy Trinity truly creates the illusion of Christ being crucified right in that archway, and that the viewers could just walk right in and become a part of the painting. As James Ackerman says, the magnificent vault arching over the austere figures in Masaccio s fresco [is] an utterly convincing illusion of architectural form extending into space (Achkerman 171). This work almost has a dot to dot effect on the viewer s eyes because of the swirling motions moving in a circle through the middle of the painting, but Van Gogh uses the large tree and bright moon on different sides of the paper to give the painting unity. Starry Night is arguably one of Van Gogh s best paintings because of the excellent use of all the elements of art, which is hard to achieve in one piece of artwork. One strong aspect of this painting is it has a strong sense of both harmony and unity. The painting achieves harmony by using similar elements throughout the work and unity by making a quality of wholeness or oneness to the painting. Even though there are many different hues in this painting none have an overpowering feeling over the work which brings wholeness to the work. The work has repetition and rhythm of colors such as blue and patterns like the swirling brush strokes which brings many elements throughout the work. The speaker portrays the internal battle that Levy faces in a racist and sexist society as being not only Jewish but a strong feminist and lesbian. By living through the speaker Levy is able to express her deepest thoughts and beliefs about contemporary society, and how it has come to affect her ultimately causing her to take her own life. The poem immediately sets a tone of unhappiness that is constant throughout the poem. The speaker describes the setting of the scene: the sad rain falls from Heaven (l.1). The sad rain indicates the darker state of an unjust civilization and how it causes the speaker to become depressed. The word heaven is used to signify that even God looks down on mankind and deems it unfair. Heaven also gives the poem religious context which may be related to Levy being Jewish in a dominating Christian society and how this causes her to be discriminated against. The speaker realizes their personal truths while they look from outside culture inwards. A window is used to signify a barrier between the speaker and the general public. The society that the speaker lives in is unjust and causes the speaker to feel foreign in her own culture, and thus relates to Amy Levy s present barriers as a young Jewish woman who wishes for acceptance. In the article Faculty Work, Student Success, Colleen Flaherty attempts to address this problem by analyzing the benefits that undergraduate research has on students and faculty. However, she points out that faculty have a hard time balancing the demands of focusing on teaching students while keeping up with research, without sacrificing the quality of one or both pursuits. Flaherty uses the College of New Jersey, as an example of an institution that took a risk and did a complete reformation of their curriculum focusing on the teacher scholar model and undergraduate research (Flaherty, 2014). Since the implementation of the program in 2004, it had benefited both students and faculty alike such as increased retention and recruitment rates and increased student faculty interactions (Flaherty, 2014). The new curriculum lightened the faculty teaching requirement to three courses a semester than were focused on undergraduate research and scheduled time to pursue their own research while encouraged to include students in that as well (Flaherty, 2014). While this new model has worked well for this university to engage students in learning through an emphasis on undergraduate research and balancing the faculty s workload by changing their curriculum, this model may just not be feasible for some institutions since they vary greatly in size, focus, and resources, etc. ...
