Cooperatives have shown promise as powerful drivers of economic development for their communities. Despite competing demands on financial resources, economic development is a perennial top priority at best in class companies, with the most successful sharing a few common characteristics including visible and accountable leadership, consistent and significant resources, and focused and measurable objectives.
This ScottMadden insight is the fourth in a series on “Five Strategic Priorities for Generation and Transmission Cooperatives.” The report summary can be found here: http://www.scottmadden.com/insight/516/five-strategic-priorities-for-generation-and-transmission-cooperatives.html.

Sostenibilità, ambiente e obbligazioni etiche - Senator Harris B. McDowell - ...hubroma
Energy Efficiency – Good for the World’s Economy; Good for the Nation’s Econo...Alliance To Save Energy
States awaiting stimulus funds will be pleased to know that when it comes to funding energy efficiency programs, their dollars will go far. Drastically reduced energy consumption and immediate job growth are just some of the benefits that effective policies and programs can bring, particularly to the Appalachian region, which has the highest energy consumption in the country. Kateri Callahan presented these findings to the annual Charlotte Regional Partnership Investors Board in Charlotte, N.C., where already progressive energy efficiency policies and programs are taking root. Callahan also briefed the audience of investors and board members on the climate and energy bills moving through Congress.
The 2009 American Recover and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) promises substantial funding for energy efficiency programs – to the tune of $26 billion – and many in the business of energy efficiency such as TAC are looking for ways to access its funding. In order to educate its employees and partners on the impact of the ARRA, TAC presented an educational webinar in which Callahan addressed the stimulus package, the Obama administration's impact on energy policies, and the role TAC can play in delivering energy related projects.
Kateri Callahan joined Israeli mayors and senior representatives from local Tel Aviv authorities and agencies to discuss the challenges and potential for Israeli cities in deploying energy efficiency at scale. Showcasing success stories and case studies from the U.S. and around the world, Callahan demonstrated the economic, environmental, and security benefits of advancing programs, technologies, funding and infrastructure that promote efficient energy use.

Clean energy has entered the mainstream at the world’s largest corporations. This report, the second in the Power Forward series from Ceres, WWF, Calvert Investments, and David Gardiner and Associates, expands upon the analysis of clean energy and climate targets from the U.S. Fortune 100 to include the full U.S. Fortune 500. The report totals the savings that leading companies are realizing and chronicles the rapidly evolving business practices, financial tools, and policy developments that are catalyzing corporate clean energy adoption and making non-energy companies significant players on the electrical grid.
The George Washington University is committed to sustainability and “envisions a future with resource systems that are healthy and thriving for all.” GW has devoted considerable effort to sustainability research and education, with a comprehensive program of undergraduate and graduate academic offerings from the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Elliott School of International Affairs, the Law School, the College of Professional Studies, the School of Public Health & Health Services, and the School of Business.
The School of Business recognizes that the incredibly broad scope of sustainability requires the cooperation and collaboration of the entire University, and indeed, all of society. If they are to be effectively applied in business, sustainable concepts and practices must be developed with the input of scientific, technical, legal, public policy and planning expertise.
GWSB is particularly proud of the part it plays in coordination with all of GW’s colleges and schools in this critical field. On June 24, GWSB had the opportunity to share its research and report on its efforts at an Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) conference on sustainability, in Washington, D.C.
At the conference, Dean Doug Guthrie moderated a panel on “Fostering the Social Impacts of B-Schools.” The highlight of the panel discussion was a presentation delivered by George Coehlo, MBA, ’77, GW trustee and member of the GWSB Board of Advisors. The chairman of GW’s Sustainability Committee, Coehlo is managing director of Good Energies, LLP and has an extensive background in finance, technology, and clean energies.
In his presentation, “Cross Campus Collaborations in Sustainability” (a copy of his PowerPoint deck is posted here), Coehlo provided a detailed overview of global trends in markets and sustainability, trends in clean energy investment, and GWSB’s extensive efforts in sustainability research and education.
We are fortunate to have such a knowledgeable, experienced, and driven individual helping to guide GW’s important work in a field that is absolutely vital to the future of the earth. GWSB thanks George Coehlo for all that he does for the University, the School of Business, and the planet, and looks forward to continuing to work with him.

Combined cycle plants may have fewer moving parts than coal plants, but that does not mean that their operations are any easier to analyze. Relatively limited operating experience and sparse data allow beliefs to take root—some well-founded and others less so. This report takes a quick look at three such beliefs and offers some tantalizing, although preliminary, observations on these questions:
Do higher capacity factors really result in lower non-fuel costs?
Do older units that start more frequently have higher non-fuel costs?
Do merchant operators do a better job of cost containment compared to rate base operators?
Technology is a key enabler for achieving the synergies and savings associated with a shared services delivery model and are important tools for running an HR service center. Over the last ten years, the U.S. nuclear industry has seen large demands on its capital project/major modification organizations with the mandate to ensure compliance for a number of concerns. As the nuclear fleet continues to age, projects like these will continue to surface, representing large capital exposure for nuclear power plants. For that reason, successful execution of capital projects has never been more important. ScottMadden believes it is critical to ensure the capital projects organization and its projects are structured and organized with clear roles and responsibilities, disciplined in the execution of policies and procedures, and systematic about informing senior leadership of the likelihood and potential costs of project risks.
Success of your capital program depends on the ability to manage a portfolio of projects well and the ability to execute each project’s required actions on time, on budget, and with quality. ScottMadden’s Capital Program Assessment examines how the capital program is implemented—from top to bottom—with a look at the PMO, a specific project selected by our client, and a review of the performance reporting and tools in place. Our approach analyzes these critical areas to provide a detailed assessment of your capital program with actionable recommendations.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
