Imagine a scenario where every step in the food supply chain is continuously monitored, analyzed, and modified based on real-time insights. The possibilities for improved consumer protection seem endless.
Restaurants can leverage this technology to ensure that every ingredient used in their kitchens meets stringent quality standards. By analyzing data from suppliers and cross-checking it against regulatory guidelines, establishments can significantly minimize the risk of serving contaminated or expired products. From identifying allergen traces in packaged foods to monitoring temperature control during storage and transportation processes, advanced algorithms empower restaurant owners with comprehensive control over their operations.
Similarly, catering services can utilize data analytics to improve their menu offerings based on customer preferences while simultaneously maintaining high-quality standards. Analyzing feedback from previous events allows caterers to identify popular dishes, and ingredient trends, and even detect potential health hazards not apparent at first glance.
- Introduction: The Importance of Food Safety
Food safety is a critical aspect of food production and consumption that directly impacts the health and wellbeing of individuals. With an increasing focus on healthy eating and nutrition, ensuring the safety of our food is more important than ever. Not only does proper food safety prevent illnesses and diseases caused by contamination, but it also contributes to building trust between consumers and food producers.
Moreover, in today's globalized world where food travels across borders, maintaining strict food safety standards is essential to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens and contaminants. Consumers have become more vigilant about the origin of their food and its production process, making it imperative for businesses to prioritize food safety to retain consumer confidence. By investing in innovative solutions that enhance food safety protocols, businesses can not only protect public health but also safeguard their reputation and bottom line.
Understanding Food Poisoning
Food poisoning is a serious and often underestimated risk that can result from consuming contaminated or improperly handled food. While most cases are mild and resolved without medical intervention, severe instances can lead to hospitalization and even death. Understanding the causes and symptoms of food poisoning is crucial for preventing its occurrence, as well as for identifying it early on.

Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him. Unfortunately, he passed away quite early but his wife, Rabia Begum, with the support of her son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, not only kept the institution in existence but also expanded it. As he grew up, Hakeem Abdul Hameed took on all responsibilities. After helping with his younger brother's upbringing and education, he included him in running the institution. Both brothers Hakeem Abdul Hameed and Hakim Mohammed

2. Why adopting modern food safety and hygiene practices ?
210/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
Why adopt food quality assurance?
• In 2016, more than 200 diseases were spread through food.
• 10% people fell ill every year across the globe due to contaminated food.
• 420,000 people died every year as a result of the same, as stated by WHO.
These alarming facts highlight the importance of food safety and hygiene in every step of food preparation and/or
manufacturing. This largely involves the businesses that are into food manufacturing and distribution. Any safety breach
could harm a brand and its reputation. So it is risky to sideline food safety and hygiene management for any organization
since customer trust is everything.

5. 1. Adopting Digital revolution in food safety and hygiene practices
510/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
A central digitalized automated system can be used for storing information. Operations like
documentation or record keeping, statistical process control charting and workflow management
functions etc. can be digitalized.
There exist path breaking software in the market that automate operations like temperature checks,
help customers check allergens and maintain a food safety and hygiene routine.
6. 2. Implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the food safety
and hygiene industry
610/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
IoT is a booming technology and has wide-range applications. IoT is a collection of devices that are
connected to each other via the Internet and share data with each other as and when required. IoT
ensures higher levels of traceability in the process of food manufacturing, thereby also ensuring food
safety and making them more accountable.
When a food safety and hygiene problem is identified, an effective traceability process powered by IOT
can help prevent potentially defective products from reaching the consumers at the earliest. For
instance, the Internet of Things (IoT) helps to track and identify underlying technical issues along the
supply chain, including a food product’s physical transportation from one place to another.
7. 3. Developing an automation plan for the Food Testing Labs
710/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
Automation has often been a better approach for managing certain business operations and the same
rule applies to the food sector as well. The process of food manufacturing and testing can be made free
from human errors through a well-planned automation plan for testing the food and ensuring the quality
standards.
8. 4. Compliance to Digital HACCP Checklists
810/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) is a renowned system for food safety and food
quality control. Even while leveraging the technology around, the aim should be to improve the
productivity of the business.
This can be done by ensuring that an organization complies with the HACCP Checklist that consists
of the following:-
a) Hazard Analysis – What are the possible hazards that may occur during the functioning of your
business?
b) Critical control points – From the first stage to the final stage, what are the hazards that are
controllable?
c) Establish limit “Fail - Safe” for service – What are the standards implemented in the food industry that
assure food safety and hygiene quality?
d) Monitoring – How to ensure that the employees are actually carrying out the food quality control standards
frequently and without any errors?
e) Corrective action – Are proper protocols followed when a foodborne illness occurs?
9. 5. Modern Allergen Testing And Labelling Solution
910/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
Allergen Tracking and Labelling solution saves lives. It includes ensuring food safety from allergen
cross-contact, safety during storage, handling and use, labeling the processed food, along with
ensuring that it is not misbranded. Allergen Tracking and Labelling should be taken into consideration
by every modern food business to
10. 6. Automatic Labelling Machine
1010/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
Focussing on labels is important because it gives the first impression of the packaged food product.
Automatic labelling machines are less time-consuming, more professional, cleaner and a more hygienic
way of labelling as compared to manual labelling.
11. 7. Environmental monitoring (EM)
1110/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
A deliberate cycle of samplings, observations, and measurements are used to assess the usefulness of
microbiological agents in food processing facilities. It determines whether the procedures and
frequency of sanitation in a particular environment are effective or not. It also supports the
implementation of food safety and hygiene management systems like HACCP etc.
12. 8. Need for Sanitation and Hygiene Verification
1210/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
There are various methods to ensure food safety and hygiene in the process of food production. Some
of these methods are: Visual Inspection, Microbial Enumeration, measuring the levels of Adenosine Tri-
phosphate (ATP) post sanitation and before production, etc. If not done effectively, it can adversely
affect brand reputation, finance, and citations by regulatory agencies.
13. 9. Education and training of Food Handlers and supervisors on
modern practices
1310/23/2020TÜV SÜD |
Education is probably the most important thing and the biggest challenge that business owners ignore.
Knowing the business requirements and importance of food safety and hygiene management is as
important as educating and training your workforce. After all, they are the ones who are directly
managing the business.
14. Conclusion
