• Hypertension is the number 1 cause of death in the Caribbean and the world.
7.6 million people die from hypertension each year, this accounts for 13.5% of all the deaths in
the world. In the Caribbean, about 1.6 million people die of hypertension every year.
Hypertension is also responsible for 51% of deaths due to stroke and 45% of deaths due to
heart disease.
• In many countries, there are undiagnosed hypertensive patients, e.g., 50% of Jamaicans do
not know that they are hypertensive. This contributes to the ever-rising hypertensive death
rate.

Disposable income refers to the amount of money remaining after taxes and other
social charges are deducted.
About 65% of this disposable income is spent on hypertensive care. This amount
doesn't only include the medication and direct health care, it also includes the cost
for adjusting one's diet, transportation to health are consultations, etc.
Some medications are purchased by the patient among many other expenses.

• Billions of dollars are spent by Caribbean nations annually on Hypertensive
treatments.
• This total includes the cost of health care services, medications to treat hypertension,
and a loss of productivity.
• For Jamaica, for the 2020/2021 period the NHF spent $1.275 Billion on hypertension
drugs compared to $940 million spent in the 2014/2015 period. As you can see, this
figure increases every year as more people become hypertensive and the treatment is
life-long
