Focus Group analysis
Question One
In this question, it asked our audience which genre was their favourite. From
looking at the responses as well as the pie chart, it shows that the most popular
genre was Indi/alt rock. These results will be used to influence our decision for
our chosen genre. Also as we already chose to do James Blunt as our chosen
artist, he fits quite well into that particular genre, so our chosen artist will appeal
more to our target audience. Also from looking at the data, it shows that rock
was the next popular category that was chosen from our target audience, and
this fits well with our chosen artist.
Question Two
In the second question, it asked our focus group to state which soft rock artist
they knew/ heard of. The artists that they could have chosen are Phil Collins,
James Blunt, Elton John, Lionel Richie and Rod Stewart. From looking at the
responses as well as the pie chart, it shows that Elton John was the most well
know artist with a percentage of 26% closely followed by James Blunt with a
percentage of 22%. This feedback will be used to help make our decision for
choosing our artist. As both of these artist are both well know, these are the main
two artist that we could choose from.

Question Three
This question askes what type of characteristics will be featured within a generic
Soft Rock music video. These responses will be used to give us ideas for what
may or may not be used for our final product. These responses will also be used
to influence our initial ideas as our audience have told use what they would be
expecting to see in the video. Some of the responses from the focus group were
“slow pace shots and editing”, “Deep narrative”, “soft vocals”, “Bright colours”
and “Central shots of the artist”. The use of this feedback will be used to
influence the type of shots that are used in the music video as well as the type of
mood that we want to get across to our audience. For example we might use a
shallow focus to create a sense of mystery.
Question Four
The fourth question asked the focus group what type of narrative would be used
within a soft rock video. This will be used to influence the type of narrative that
will be used in our music video, for example if most people expected a love story,
our music video would contain elements of a love story. From looking at the
responses from the questionnaires, most people expected love to be the main
type of narrative that would be expected within a soft rock video. There were
some responses that said that friendship might be used, as well as a simple story.
Because of these responses, our narrative of our chosen music video will be
biased around love, as this will appeal more to our audience, as this will be what
they would be expecting in our music video. However, we could put a twist to
make the narrative a little bit different and not as generic as if it is what they are
expecting, our audience might get bored.
Question Five
The next question in the focus group questionnaire, asked people what James
blunt song they liked the best. The four songs that they could choose from were,
“Bonfire Heart”, “Carry You Home”, “When I Find Love Again” and “I’ll Be Your
Man”. The use of this data will be used to help us decide what James Blunt song
we would do for our music video. This will also help us decide on the narrative of
the music video as well due to the lyric that are used within the song. We asked
people to rate these four songs from one being the best to four being the worst.
Most people thought that “When I Find Love Again” was the best song as shown
in the graph below the next song that was chosen was “Bonfire Heart”. Because
of this data, we have decided to choose “When I Find Love Again” as our chosen
song as this is the most popular song that from our questionnaire. Because of this
it will appeal more towards our target audience, as this is the song that they
want to see/listen to.
Question Six
This question asked our focus group if the song should be Illustration,
Amplification or contradiction. This will change the look of the music video as
the shots used could be directly linked to the lyrics of the song or it could be
slightly implied. Because of this, it will change the whole look of the song. From
looking at the responses of the focus group, I found out that most people wanted
to the music video to be either illustration, or amplification. As both of these
Reponses are both popular, we have decided to make our music video
amplification, this id because if we did an illustration music video, it would make
it difficult for some particular shots, where as if it was amplification, it will allow
us to have more creative freedom as we could have more shots that make the
audience think about why we used that shot and come up with their own
reasons, making it a unique experience.
