Experiment 1 – coloured light gels
Experiment 1
During my research I found that my target audience wants to see quirky, creative and different concepts in my fashion photography magazine, and because my
magazine is a fashion photography magazine I wanted to come up with dome cool concepts for photoshoots that will be featured in my magazine.
During the week of the 17th April 2018, I viewed a documentary my friend made who is studying media at stoke university. His documentary was about a
meditation centre in stoke, what caught my eye was the red colour lighting they put over a part of the documentary. He filmed a women handling a singing bowl and
put a red light effect over her handling the bowl, it gave the whole scene a darkened atmosphere and it entices the audience due to the ascetically pleasing effect the
light has. I asked my friend how he made this effect work and told me he used colour gels over the lights.
I then asked my tutor Scott if we had any resources at college that I could use to get a similar effect. He told me we had some colour gel sheets that would give me a
colour light effect over my model therefore I chose to try out these colour gel sheets as an experiment to see if I can get the effect I want.
I asked Emma (one of my models) to just stand for me whilst I test the colours over her, what i found out was the sheets worked but the colour wasn't as intense as I
wanted, the orange worked really well compared to the blue and over a white background I found works a lot better that black as I shows more of the colour effect.
With the blue effect it worked best with a white background and with the lights as bright as they can be, with the darker light you don't really get any of the blue
colour through. The orange sheet worked better than the blue, it was more intense in colour.
I wanted to see if I could do anything else with the colour gels than just putting a colour over a model, so I put two gels up on two different lights on opposing side to
my model so that one colour (blue) spread across half of my model and the other colour (orange) spread across the other half of my model. I ended up with Emma
having tone tones to her face half and half the two different colours, it look quirky and definitely catches the eye. I had to edit the colour rage on the blue side to get
the blue to pop as much as the orange, but I like the overall effect and therefore in my production I want to do a two toned coloured photoshoot for a collection that
will be featured in the magazine.
When it come to production I want to try get this effect but more intense, to do that I'm going to use the photography studio in college which is completely blacked
out and there's further distance between the backdrop and the camera compared to the media studio, this will help me control the colour and get a better effect. I'm
also only going to use warmer colours as the colour comes through a lot more than with cooler colours.
Experiment 2
To be prepared for production I wanted to create a mock up of what my magazine front cover's fonts
would love like and how they would be placed so therefore when it came to production and having
taken my cover photos I can place the photos and illustrations in and the cover will be complete.
I looked on sites: freefonts.com, fontspace.com and I also used fonts already available on my MacBook.
I found two fonts I liked for each section of text on my cover. For my masthead I chose: Impact and DIN
Condensed. For my tag lines I chose: KBJellybean, KBJumpingjellybeans, Skytree and Ghostofmars.
After finding fonts I liked I made two much up designs places fonts together I thought work best. Now
when it comes to production and have finalised my photo choice I will chose which mock up works best
for the cover of my magazine.
FONT MOCK UP EXPERIMENT
Experiment 3 – Shape Illustrations
I'm treating this project as if this magazine was to be published
bi-annually and therefore with my fashion photography
magazine, each issue have a theme which is inspired the cover
and some content throughout the magazine. I've chosen to make
an art issue, due to my interest with illustrations and also I plan
to use the York Art Gallery as the setting for my double page
spread.
For my Third experiment I made some custom shapes on
photoshop using either the custom shape tool and my own
adjustments or the brush tool. I want to incorporate shapes like
these on my cover around my model. I think they'll contrast well
with her clothing (white top with multiple colored lines).
I wanted to do this experiment beastie I want to see if I could get
results I'd be happy with using the software's I have available. I
used Adobe Photoshop and to create the shapes I used the
different shapes tools and gave them custom adjustments, I also
used the brush tool to get the dotted effect. I am happy with my
results and plan on using similar shapes and colors on my cover.
