Max Jones proposes creating a noir horror/sci-fi thriller trailer set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, borrowing influences from films like Black Mirror and Mad Max. He will use animation and editing skills developed in previous projects. His skills in combining shots, directing others, and applying IT skills in programs like Photoshop and Premiere Pro make him confident in completing the project. A mood board shows influences like costumes from Oblivion and Logan, weapons, and derelict settings that will inspire the trailer's style and locations. Key influences are the Black Mirror episode "Metalhead" and the Mad Max franchise.

2. Pre-proposal
My initial proposal for my FMP is to create a noir horror/sci-
fi/thriller trailer based in an abandoned place set in a post
apocalyptic wasteland but I wont give too much info away in the
trailer to make the viewers think what it could be, I will be
borrowing many influences from these types of movies and
series like black mirror and mad max. The animation of the video
games in previous projects were my most enjoyable things to
create an I believe they're my most successful. I will use these
skills and my editing and colour grading ones to my
advantage. My inspirations for my project are post apocalyptic
wasteland media like Mad Max and The Road.
3. Skills Audit
In my recent projects of the past year I have not really tested my filming ability but as I am
influencing this off of quite a lot of other outlets for this style I believe I will have a good sense of
what I'm trying to achieve. In my irn bru can fight advert I showed the skills that I could combine
many different shots to make it look like the cans were having a stand off. I believe this skill is
crucial as if I can make that look relatively realistic with cans of drink with all practical props I
could make this trailer look good with the editing skills I have learnt from creating my music video
which I only used my iphone camera and in after effects. I am good at working in a team and even
better when directing people with things id like them to do, this will be crucial during filming as
everything is kind of my idea and my project, obviously I can take constructive criticism and I will
be considering and listening to peoples ideas but at the end of the day its me who decides what
to shoot so its important I have a decent level of control. I am okay at problem solving and
understanding what goes wrong, although I may still get frustrated I will understand and try to
improve. My self management could improve and did slip near the start of the year, but I am up
to date with all work now and meeting all deadlines. When I need something to happen or need
help I am good at communicating which is important to getting your ideas across and helping
other people understand what vision you may have. My application of IT skills are quite good,
since September I have learnt all the basics of photoshop, premier pro, after effects, illustrator,
plus animating, editing video and sound and colour grading. With the project I'm trying to make
these skills are necessary to have so I feel quite confident. Even if I don’t know how to do
something, its not hard to search a tutorial or ask for help, then I have learnt the skill.
4. Mood Board
This black and white episode of black
mirror does not give any indication to
what happened to the world, its not so
much of a wasteland, but more of the
aftermath of a recent invasion. The
characters are perused by these robotic
dog this that seem to be programmed to
kill humans in any way. The
episode follows this main woman
character who has to escape and
battle for a large proportion of the
episode. I will use this quite a lot in my
trailer and hopefully it will look relatively
similar.
This outfit is from the
movie oblivion and is
what sort of things the
scavengers wear, its set
in a future post
apocalyptic land ruled
by loads of different
versions of tom cruises
character controlled by
an AI but the world is
baron so this is good
for inspiration of
costume.
Another source ill be using for inspiration is the mad max
franchise, mainly the new adaptation Fury Road. Some of
the outfits in this movie convey what I want to include in my
trailer. I will tone them down a bit as they are a bit
extravagant.
i want to incluide shots in my trailer from a
technologocoly advanced binocular lense as you
see a lot of them throughout many films. They
can give a sense of mystery when you don’t know
who is behind them
5. This outfit is from a movie called Logan, the character in
the picture is extremely sensitive to sunlight so he wears
this set of clothes, I like the styling of it as in my apocalyptic
world that could be a key factor in it I could include.
These sorts of weapons could be included in my
production as they look like the style I'm trying to
convey
This is the sort of setting I will be using to shoot
scenes inside if I have to
this is the sort of poster I want to
make with my main character I will
do a photoshoot at a near by air
field.
6. These are some more location inspiration for shooting my
trailer I want a derelict setting where no life can be seen and
all buildings are broken down. I think the best way to do this is
to go to a place where it looks really cliché for an abandoned
place.
7. These are the sort of outfits I want
my characters to wear in my
trailer, the googles and eye wear is
something I really ant to look
good. I want the characters to
have full face masks so I can easily
show basic emotion and what the
character wants without using
professional actors
Snowpiercer is a great post apocalypse movie where
the worlds temperature has dropped so much the
world has become inhabitable and the last of
humanity has moved onto a huge train where social
status and the status quo is clearly shown when the
poor people who live in poverty at the back of the
train move their way up to the front to see what
luxurious life people are living.
8. For my trailer I'd like to create a poster for it as well, I will base mine off a mix of these posters
shown. Some show the world that the characters explore which is dead and baron, they show
the loneliness that someone would experience in the circumstance of the situation.
In the road's poster the image is angled more than a Dutch angle but not enough so its
sideways, in film this is used to present the feeling of paranoia and movement. The road warrior
poster is from the 80s so it’s a really detailed drawing which was popular at the time, I believe
this is good for the action movies they are used for because they can capture any sort emotion
the artist desires, its also good that the artist can include cars, other vehicles and some of the
cast in any place they want place. Star wars also used this with a new hope where it’s a heavily
edited drawing whereas nowadays its heavily edited photographs. (next slide)
9. although older films had to use this effect to create a poster because the cameras were
not that good but some movies have posters like this, usually for artistic reasons.
Although most modern movies use real pictures of people and objects and theyre all
edited into the same A4 print. Another code most action film's posters follow in todays
age is the one that is where all the characters are in their poster with a mutual centre
where all the characters face away from and are mostly symmetrical as they could of
got them. Although I may not using this styling for the posters I will make, its good to
see what is popular and what makes a good posters that the audience will enjoy.
10. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
My mood board will heavily influence my production, I want to make a
believable apocalypse setting and this will require a lot of work to be
put into costume and shots. It shows basically what my trailer will look
like if you combine some of the photos together.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
This mood board will be my building blocks for my style when I film
and create props, It will be an accumulation of all the types of media I
have seen based on this sort of genre which is post apocalyptic
wasteland where the remaining people left on earth fight amongst
themselves for food, water and anything else valuable to their survival.
11. Key influences
(2017)Metalhead- Black mirror episode-
Ragnar Bragason
This one off noir episode of black mirror is one of the more lesser remembered
episodes, not much context is given away and I believe most people would
remember it as being a group that’s get split up and scared of being killed by these
little dog robots that seem to want to murder them. And then they would
remember the main woman character having a battle with one. This episode
interests me as its very resourceful with shots and shooting locations. As very little
tv and film media is not shot in black and white nowadays, people may be put off by
watching it as they like to see the colour because they're used to it. The robot dogs
seem to be extremely advanced, I remember they use solar energy to charge and
they can use knives and tools to their advantage, as seen in these screenshots. As
they seem to be really smart and kill some off the characters with minimal effort
which builds up tension when the camera follows one as you know its thinking of a
way to get to the target. Before the story was turned into a live action adaptation it
was already quite bare in context, this is why the black and white approach to the
episode was used as not much information is given anyway. The overall message
the creators were aiming for was a story that could be a reality, man vs machine
which this episode, so greatly represents. Although the setting for this episode was
not quite a cliché post apocalyptic place but more of a more realistic English country
side and modern country homes where most people have a higher chance of
surviving. Another thing I like about this episode and other examples of this in
apocalyptic pieces of media is the inclusion of the characters coming across dead
body's that looks like an elaborate suicide which gives a clear inclination that what is
going on in the world is so terrifying that death is a simpler solution that trying to
live and the risk of getting murdered by the robot dog things.
12. Key Influences
Mad Max fury road(2015)-George
Miller &George Ogolivie
Mad Max is one of my favorite franchises, the whole concept is a very believable scenario where natural resources are drained and all that is left is baron
desert wasteland. All that is left of humanity are groups and people who live their days fighting over the remaining fuel and more importantly water is more
valuable than anything else viewed as an object n the movies., it a conveys a post apocalyptic scene with not much context or information of how it got like it
is. The custom cars and the steampunk respirators is a lot to live up to so I will only be using certain aspects of the series and mostly the newest movie that
was made in 2015. The colour grading in this film is one of the most ambitious I have seen in recent history, one of the others being the grading shown
throughout" 'O brother where art thou" where the Coen brothers were filming in Mississippi mid summer so all the trees were bright green the software they
used made all the green in the movie faded to look brownish.
The mad Max cinematic universe gives us an insight into what the world could come to when crucial resources run low and climate change takes over to
create a derelict wasteland. This is a key concept I wish to reimagine in my trailer. Although the context will be minimal people will be able to guess what is
going on and come up with their own ideas of what happened. There has been a numerous amount of post apocalyptic media that has been out now, many
movies and shows use this concept literally because its entertaining with or without context. Priest is a movie set in a world where humans and vampires have
been fighting for ages. The only settlements that exist are the ones run by the clergy which is a Christian community. The settlement has a heavy cyber punk
vibe and its almost like a dystopian future ruled by the religious leaders. The hero's of this world that were disbanded after the last large vampire war are the
priests which are combat trained people who use silver weapons in the shape of crosses to kill the vampires.
Overall, these sorts of styles and worlds are what I will be using as my prop and some setting inspiration to induce that feeling of an apocalyptic future.
13. Key Influences
The road (2009)
This adaptation of the book of the same name ,written by
Cormac McCarthy, Is a movie about a Father and son who have
to travel across America in search of warm climate and food.
They travel through a world that has been affected by a global
cataclysm that has caused a huge extinction event. On their
journey they must face the factors of starvation, other gangs
that want to abuse and kill them and the effects of other
peoples insanity.
A memorable scene in this film is when after the catastrophy
Viggo Mortensens character's wife gives birth to his son,
shortly after she gradually loses hope. In this time frame
Mortensens charcter shoots an intruder using one of three
bullets they have saved for their family as a last resort, his wife
and mother of his new born son accuses him of wasting the
bullet deliberately to prevent her suicide. Removing her coat
and hat, she walks into the woods, never to be seen again. This
perfectly demonstrates what sort of effect a derelict world,
absence from social, everyday activities and to be left with one
goal which is to survive could have on people. This is the sort
of feeling I wish to capture in my trailer, The kill or be killed
vibe, I want to present how valuble food and water is and how
people are now willing to risk their lives to get a hold of the
smallest ammount. The stying and colour grading of this movie
is saturated extremly low to show how musty and filthy the air
is so it looks inhabitable.
14. Key influences
2000 cast away-Robert Zemeckis
2015 The Martian- Ridley Scott
These two movies perfectly demonstrate the ingenuity of humans when left
on they're own with the resources they have which are limited.
The Martian is about an astronaut (Matt Damon) who has been stranded on Mars
after a strong storm hit the crew and they took and escape pod back to their ship
which is orbiting mars. Matt Damon was swept away by the storm and he wakes up
when it has past, his visor is partially smashed, he goes back to his living pod and
ends up surviving barely, growing potatoes. Eventually he sends a message to his
crew and earth that he is alive and makes his way home. This sort of story is similar
to a cliché one about a waste lander exploring the baron land, although this one is
significantly different as he is on a different planet on his own.
Cast away follows this same premise to an extent. Tom Hanks's character is involved
in a plane crash which results in him being stranded on a desert island with a
handful of resuorces that washed up from the crashed plane. When his efforts to
sail away and contact help fail, Tom Hanks learns how to survive on the island,
where he remains for years, accompanied by only his handmade volleyball friend,
Wilson. In the film, Chuck(Hanks) is faced with dealing with medical problems and
mental ones, near the start he has to remove one of his own teeth which is shown
in an increbly intense scene, these are the sorts of things waste landers and
survivors of the apocalypse will have to face.
I will be incorporating some survival aspects from each of these movies and they
will inspire me to show the difficulties of a post apocalyptic world. My trailer will
represent what humans take for granted in every day life.
15. For my trailer title I like the word dissolution to be on the screen then for it to fade away like
dust particles. Tjis would be a very good addition to my project and show the skills I could learn
in photoshop with animation. 0
TAGLINES- Reality is bad something is worse
Hope is nothing survival is everything
Hope is scarce and mercy is gone
