Continuing Education for Hospital
Employees
Hospital employees must be continuously up to date with:
• Patient privacy protection (HIPAA federal laws)
• Patient satisfaction norms of behavior (good business practice)
• Patient safety rules and regulations (avoid liability)
• Hospital employment other general regulations (fire safety, corporate
compliance, equipment use safe practices, etc)
Continuing Education for Hospital
Employees
• Hospitals have a large number of employees. Even small size hospitals can
have over 2-3 thousand employees.
• There is need for efficient ways of training without impeding daily operation
of business
• E-training is an ideal form because of the following advantages:
E-training Advantages
• It can be accessed remotely
• It is an asynchronous type of training
• It allows employees to do it in their own free time. (It is explicitly
recommended that, during working hours, employees will not stop their
duties just to do online training. It is expected that employees will act
responsibly to this task)
• The training must be done annually. It’s a continuous training. Therefore:
• Employees are allowed to do it at their own pace as long as they complete
the annual cycle
• Employees are allowed to repeat a training session as many times as they
want , if they fail an end test, or just want to refresh their knowledge
• They have ongoing access to the online resources
• It’s personalized training and cost effective
Adult LearningTheories
Applied to e-Learning
• Behaviorist: Focuses on observable behavior and reproducing it - “the aim
of a behavioristic-oriented instructional design for eLearning must be to
provide learners with the appropriate stimuli, that is with opportunities that
help them demonstrate that they are able to express desired behaviors that
prove that learning has actually taken place” (Keramida, 2015).
• Cognitivist:The mind analyzes the information leading to understanding
and retention - “allows e-learners to sequence learning content the way they
feel best fits their need”; “they can skip or repeat multiple times, based on their
individual comfort with the subject matter” (Arshavskiy, 2018).
• Constructionist: Learner constructs knowledge based on previous
information – “online learning is a multi-dimensional platform that gives
students a host of tools with which to build on and further explore what they
already know and what they are curious about” (Holz, 2017)
Effect of Social Media or e-Learning on
Student Motivation
• It’s practical and convenient – it can be accessed from multiple places and
sites and learners can do it at any time they choose.
• It’s efficient – learners can do it at their own pace, in their own style
• It’s engaging – learners can interact with the learning process
• It’s generates intrinsic rewards
• It promotes critical thinking and creativity
• It builds competency
Ethical Considerations of Integrating Social Media
• Users (employees) must create public profiles in order to attend e-learning.
• It arises the problem of equity and diversity, surveillance and consent,
identity and confidentiality (Anderson, Simpson, 2008)
• Public profiles can be hacked, harassed, discredited, shamed (Childs, 2014)
• Intellectual property – Users must always give proper credit and protect
their own material published online.
• Freedom of expression versus hate speeches versus censorship
• Respect the other users and their opinions
• Scholastic honesty versus academic fraud (Bušíková, 1993)
RelevantTraining Program Competencies
• Manage technology – the computers and network systems have to be
running smoothly
• Select and manage resources – the learning material has to be kept up to
date and accurate to the scope of the training
• Identify needs – both of the learners and of the organization
• Optimize processes – make the learning experience smooth and enjoyable
• Develop and deliver solutions – where needed
• Strategic alignment – with similar organizations in the industry
• Evaluate performance – it has to be accurate, non-biased, and deliver real
competent workers, post training session
• (“TheTraining Manager Competency Model”, 2018)
