1. What is the relationship
between faults and
earthquakes?
Earthquakes occur when rocks along faults
suddenly move.
2. Why is the Philippines prone to
typhoons?
PAR (Philippine Area of
Responsibility)
PAGASA or the
Philippine
Atmospheric,
Geophysical and
Astronomical
Services
Administration
3. How do meteoroid, meteor
and meteorite differ from each
other?
Comets are basically dusty snowballs which
orbit the Sun. They are made of ices, such as
water, carbon dioxide, ammonia and methane,
mixed with dust.
4. What is comet?asteroid?
What Is an Asteroid?
are small, rocky objects that orbit the sun. Although asteroids orbit
the sun like planets, they are much smaller than planets.
There are lots of asteroids in
our solar system. Most of them
live in the main asteroid belt—a
region between the orbits of
Mars and Jupiter

What is matter?
- Anything that occupies space and has mass
What are its properties?
quantity of matter inside an object.
Effect of gravitational pull to an object.
The amount of space taken by an object.
mass per unit volume.
Mass and weight are two different things
but most of the time confused as the same
MASS
- Quantity of
matter inside
the object.
- regardless of
location or
position
WEIGHT
- Effect of
gravitational pull
to an object.
- Changes
depending on the
force of gravity
applied to the
object
MATTER/ OBJECT
MOLECULES
ATOMS
Neutral particles made of two or more
atoms bonded and arranged together
“indivisible particle”
Matter is….
Phases of Matter
SOLID
 Have definite shape and volume
 Particles are packed closely together
in fixed positions.
 Incompressible
 Held together by strong force
 They vibrate a little but in fixed
positions/they cannot move around.
Particle view of solid
Solid objects are moving too.
WHY?
#1:This is because
even though visually
they are not moving, the
atoms inside them do.
Therefore, they vibrate
but stays in fixed
position.
Solid objects are moving too.
WHY?
#2:Particles of matter are attracted
to each other thus, causing them to
move. This same force is holding the
particles of matter together.
This force is called.....
intermolecular force
 Liquid particles flow and
takes the shape of the
container.
 Particles are close enough to
attrach each other but,
separated enough to move
freely
LIQUID
Particle view of a
liquid
GAS
Particle view of a
gas
 Gas particles are very far
apart that they can move
freely and very fast.
 Gas particles take the shape
of the container.
 Distance between the
particles are very large.
 Highest kinetic energy.
4.Ionized Plasma
5. Quark-Gluon Plasma
6. Bose-Einstein Condensate
7. Fermionic Condensate.
Other Phases of matter….
Four (4) basic concepts in the
particle nature of matter.
1. Matter is made up of tiny particles
2. The particles of matter are moving all the
time
3. These particles have spaces between
them.
4. The particles attract each other.
ACTIVITY 2: Do You Belong?
1. carbon dioxide, car exhaust, rain
2. milk, helium, tea
3. ice, blocks, juice
4. wood, coffee, gasoline
5. alcohol, bottle, oil
Does matter changes from
one state to another? How?
ASSIGNMENT #1
A change of state is a physical change in a matter. They
are reversible changes and do not involve any changes in
the chemical makeup of the matter.
