Two Journeys One Tale
The Odyssey is an eight century epic by Homer which depicts the journey of Odysseus as he
attempts to return to his home at Ithaka after the fall of Troy. During his travels, Odysseus faced
many obstacles whom he had to overcome. In order to do so, Odysseus had to prove his
intellectual capacity, strength and determination. O Brother Where Art Thou is a 2000 adventure
film which follows the journey of a man named Ulysses Everett McGill as he attempts to make his
way back home with two fellow convicts after escaping prison. Although it lacks the structure and
does not follow sequence of events of the odyssey, the film portrays many of the fundamental
concepts and ideas explored in The Odyssey. In this paper, I will explore the themes of the power
of cunning over strength, temptation and vengeance in the Odyssey, in order to depict how they are
portrayed in the film O Brother Where Art Thou and demonstrate the similarities in both tales.
First, one of the recurring themes in the Odyssey is that of cunningness over strength. Although
Odysseus was known to be a strong and powerful of individual, his cunning was his strongest
asset when it came to overcoming the obstacles in his travels. Instead of relying solely on his
strength, he relies on his minds ability to deceive and manipulate individuals to do as he pleases.

There are summative themes that can be derived from the documents that reveal some insights
regarding depression among college students. The researchers propose some interpretations of the
findings that are subjected to further study.
The occurrence of depression among college students is from their experiences in school, family
and peers. College is not also something of a pressure cooker for depression because the more an
individual surrounded by people who are depressed is the more he/she may become depressed.
We all know that college life is where we experienced more pressure because of adjusting to new

years (Cody, 2011). In his book Savage Inequalities, Kozol presents the struggles and disparities

In 2013, associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Kate Sweeny and her
researchers surveyed 230 law school graduates for a period of four months after taking their bar
exam in July 2013 ( J. Hoffman, 2015). The purpose of her research was to focus on the waiting
period during which the person is uncertain of the outcome of a life situation and how they manage
any anxiety that may occur during that time. The individuals that were surveyed in this descriptive
research used three different strategies when asked about how they tried to avoid anxiety while
waiting on their exam scores. The first group attempted to suppress their fears by trying to not pay
attention. The second group sought for silver linings. They tried to anticipate something good in a
bad outcome Dr. Sweeny explained. The third group used defensive pessimism.
At the end of Dr. Sweeny s research study what came up is that the people that were calmed
down during the waiting period were shattered and paralyzed by the bad news and if they got
