Communicating With Customers: Using Nothing but Bits & BytesDavid King
We use my library's digital branch to communicate and interact with and engage our customers. This short presentation shows off some of the ways we achieve this.
This workshop brings both the academic and public library perspectives to developing strategies for actively building relationships with your community. Learn techniques to listen to your community, to discover where they are, and to be introduced to community listening and engaging tools and techniques. Social media, technological outreach, skill development, and interpersonal techniques for engaging in effective and dynamic outreach are discussed, along with a variety of tools, techniques and tips for cementing relationships with customers and clients. This workshop is filled with ideas and tools for connecting your library to your community, in both physical and digital locations.
Many libraries use social media channels to connect with customers, to answer questions, and to just “be there” for their community. Do you know if your social media channel is successful, and are you meeting your library’s goals? Most social media channels have analytics or insights that will help figure this out. This talk explores analytics for different social media channels and explains what you should track and why.
Do you know how to write for the modern, mobile, and interactive web? Our expert, King, discusses how to create a content strategy, how to write for the mobile web, and how to write content that makes customers respond. Blakiston talks about how to write more effectively for the digital user experience without jargon, overcomplicated instructions, and walls of unnecessary text. She highlights why good web writing matters, how users read online, how to define your audience and primary messages, and how to create good web writing by focusing on essential messages, creating a logical structure and format, using active voice, and cutting out what isn't necessary. Meyer discusses strategies to help make your library's website content easier for patrons to get the information they need faster, and easier for library staff to manage.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

25. Change, the old way
• Leaders simply ordered changes
• Goal: getting the change accomplished
• When it fails, leaders review details of the
change
38. Resistance isn’t
the problem
•Management’s reaction to resistance
creates the problems
•The resistors probably don’t see it as
resistance - they see it as survival
42. 3. Bigger Stuff
• Personal history
• Who you are – race, religion, etc
• Significant disagreement over values
• Transference - the person being resisted
represents someone else (fill in the blank)
44. Just for Leaders
• You've already come to terms with the
change
• Understand why people might not want to
change
• Understand that it's the transitions, not the
change, that's causing waves
45. Steps to Take
• Describe the change succinctly
• Plan carefully
• Help people respectfully let go
• Constant communication
• Create temporary solutions when needed
• Model new behavior!
46. Don't do these things!
• Don't confuse novelty with innovation
• Don't confuse motion with action
• Don't keep something going if it “still has a
few good years of life”
48. If you refuse
to change:
• Missed career opportunities
• you'll miss out on the opportunity to expand
your network and your ability to develop new
relationships
• You’ll miss out on the possibility of shaping
your new destiny and reality
141. find staff interests
• match with goals you already have
• give it to the best fit - might be IT,
might be circ staff
• Help translate from 1.0 to 2.0
