Customer Experience - On the Web, In the Library, In the CommunityDavid King
Customer experience is a strange brew of structure, community, and customers. Today’s savvy librarians need to focus on creating digital and physical experiences for customers so that they can quickly find information, make decisions, or participate. Librarians need to create experiences that visitors not only remember, but share with their friends. David Lee King breaks down the customer experience in a way that will help you remain an indispensable focal point of your community.
People don’t want just goods or services from a business anymore – they want unique, engaging experiences built around those goods and services. It’s the same for your library. Our patrons are looking for more than a book – they can find that at Walmart and via their favorite mobile device. They want a unique, engaging experience built around “your stuff.”

Our Disappearing Content: Why Digital Preservation MattersLaurence Hart
The average organization is focused on producing and capturing content. When content is no longer needed for active work, it fades from memory. You may remember where an email or document from two years ago resides, but it will undoubtedly take you longer to find it than anticipated. If it falls to someone else to find it, they will likely waste an entire afternoon before giving up.
As time passes, the challenge to find any given piece of content increases. Even if you do find it, the digital file may be unreadable. While the odds you will need the content decreases, its value and the importance of finding it will grow. Either as critical evidence or a piece of history, rarity can increase content’s value.
These slides from my July 18, 2018 webinar, explains the risks in not thinking about digital preservation sooner rather than later. Afterwards, you will understand:
- What makes content more challenging to access over time
- The risks in not adequately managing your content
- How you can take steps today to ensure that information is not lost

Semantics, Deep Learning, and the Transformation of BusinessSteve Omohundro
Deep learning is likely to have a big impact on business. McKinsey predicts that AI and robotics will create $50 trillion of value over the next 10 years. Over $1 billion of venture investment has gone to 250 deep learning startups over the past year. Deep learning systems have recently broken records in speech recognition, image recognition, image captioning, translation, drug discovery and other tasks. Why is this happening now and how is it likely to play out? We review the development of AI and the pendulum swings between the "neats" and the "scruffies". We describe traditional approaches to semantics through logics and grammars and the new deep learning vector semantics. We relate it to Roger Shepard's cognitive geometry and the structure of biological networks. We also describe limitations of deep learning for safety and regulation. We show how it fits into the rational agent framework and discuss what the next steps may be.
This edition is packed with contributions from people across Endava, and covers many industries. It contains really cool, innovative projects that span robotics, business intelligence, security and payments. These projects are the cutting edge of the industry, and we often use these as inspiration for clients who are embarking on a Digital Transformation programme.
Here are some highlights from the report:

No matter how much we try to put ourselves into a mobile first mentality, it is hard for us to do so fully. Our access to PCs prevents us from experiencing mobile the way many in the world do.
We're currently fighting for parity among experiences. We're arguing that the mobile version shouldn't be a dumbed down version of the desktop site.
But we've set our sights too low. In a true Mobile First world, the mobile version should be the best experience. Mobile shouldn't just match the desktop experience, it should exceed it.
Open Web Camp 2014: On Fireproof, Future-Proof, Failure-Proof Things.Dylan Wilbanks
The moment we start creating a website, we’re setting ourselves up for failure later. Bad code creates middle of the night fire drills. Lack of thinking about accessibility gets our employer sued. Not thinking ahead on mobile generates rework.
We accept this as the normal course of business — but is there any way we could prevent (or lower) this cost? Is there anything we can learn from the building codes that dictate how our built environment is constructed?
A quick tour of how we got where we are with the web, and perhaps some valuable takeaway points.
Over the past weeks we have been examining the inference process- big.docxlmark1
Over the past weeks we have been examining the inference process, big data (which feeds this process) and now the inter-dependent nature of digital devices in a digital age. I invite you to follow the links below and explore the constructs of Information Overload and Machine Data. Find others of your own, as well.
Do either of these constructs resonate with you? How do they interact with the erosion of boundaries between work and home life that many of you have referenced? How does our dependence on digital devices feed machine data and big data? How does it compromise our personal security?
Try weaving one of these ideas into your thinking about ICT.

David shares best practices for taking and using photos on social media and how to make connections, grow engagement, and get people to your website and your library services using a camera.
Using Video Tools to Connect with your CustomersDavid King
You have made video and dumped it to YouTube. But have you “gone live”? This presentation explores the emerging and easy-to-use live streaming tools available to today’s librarian. We examine Facebook Live, YouTube Live, live streaming on Instagram, and Periscope, which allows you to go live on Twitter. Introductions to each will be given, and suggestions for use in a library setting will be provided. We might even “go live”!
The C Equation: Content + Connection + Community = Contented CustomersDavid King
Big or small, urban or rural, every library has three critical aspects that will always affect customers: content, connection, and community. Learn how to harness the power of traditional and emerging content needs, face-to-face connections—whether online or in-person—and community building. Putting these 3Cs to work will help your library achieve the ultimate goal: contented customers.
Instagram is a mobile photo-sharing app that allows users to take and share photos and videos with others. It's also a great way to share your library's story with customers, and is a fun visual tool to drive people to the library and its services and programs. In this webinar, attendees will learn what Instagram is, how to best use it to connect with customers, and how to set a strategy for success.
Rocking the Small Screen without Losing your MindDavid King
Video on the web is one of today's hottest social networking trends. But what can online video do for your library? This presentation explores the reasons behind making videos to promote your library and to engage with your customers.
Rocking the Small Screen: Videos & LibrariesDavid King
Video on the web is one of today’s hottest social networking trends. But what can online videos do for your library? Why use video on your library’s website and social media channels? King explores the reasons behind making videos to promote your library, to engage with your customers, for outreach and learning through a variety of case studies. Get tips on what types of content works best, and learn what to consider when planning for and implementing a video presence at your library.
Social Media Best Practices & ExperiencesDavid King
You have social media, but what should it look like? What content should you share with your customers? David shares some best practices with posting to business and organization social media channels.
Marketing and Promoting the Library WebsiteDavid King
Not getting people to your library’s website? Not sure how to “sell” your library to the younger generation? This presentation provides some easy ways to tweak your online marketing and promotion efforts for maximum impact. King shows how his library uses digital branch tools to reach out to the community and to draw people into the library—both physical and digital.

Contracts, RFPs, & Working with SuppliersDavid King
Have you ever had to write an RFP from scratch, work with vendors on a complex project, or even complain to a vendor about problems with their product? King shares the process his library goes through when choosing new technology and managing the project during installation. He also discusses effective ways to “get your voice heard” when something needs to change.
Second part of a two-part workshop on social media best practices for libraries. The second part covers individual social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and Pinterest.
Do you know how to write for the modern, mobile, and interactive web? Our expert, King, discusses how to create a content strategy, how to write for the mobile web, and how to write content that makes customers respond. Blakiston talks about how to write more effectively for the digital user experience without jargon, overcomplicated instructions, and walls of unnecessary text. She highlights why good web writing matters, how users read online, how to define your audience and primary messages, and how to create good web writing by focusing on essential messages, creating a logical structure and format, using active voice, and cutting out what isn't necessary. Meyer discusses strategies to help make your library's website content easier for patrons to get the information they need faster, and easier for library staff to manage.
Libraries use social media channels to connect with customers, to answer questions, and to just "be there" for their community. Do you know if your social media channel is successful, and you are meeting your library's goals? Most social media channels have analytics or insights that help figure this out. King explores analytics for different social media channels and explains what you should track and why. The second presentation looks at what it takes to create a strong and sustainable social media presence, including successes and bummers. Speakers discuss staff management and participation, community participation, and moving beyond event promotion.
Aligning Digital and Print Content: Editorial Content CalendarsDavid King
Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library had a problem. Content was created and published in four different places: blog posts on the website, social media, an online e-newsletter, and in a print newsletter mailed to customers. This created a lot of duplication, and extra work for staff. It decided to improve this by merging the management of these four areas into one editorial content calendar that works for both online and print-based content. This presentation describes the problem and explains how an editorial content calendar can work to streamline both content creation and publishing, while streamlining staff time as well.
Many libraries use social media channels to connect with customers, to answer questions, and to just “be there” for their community. Do you know if your social media channel is successful, and are you meeting your library’s goals? Most social media channels have analytics or insights that will help figure this out. This talk explores analytics for different social media channels and explains what you should track and why.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
