Sir Winston Churchill describes his first year experiences at Harrow school. He performed poorly on his entrance Latin exam, unable to answer a single question. However, the headmaster accepted him based on his general ability. He was placed in the lowest division for his first year. This proved advantageous as he was taught English grammar thoroughly instead of Latin and Greek. His teacher broke down English sentences into their components like verbs and nouns. Later in life, Churchill did not feel at a disadvantage compared to his classmates who learned Latin and Greek, as he had mastered English which served him well.
