Replying to a question raised by BJP legis- lator Satish Poonia during the Question Hour in Rajasthan Assembly on Tuesday, the state government said there are 18,40,044 registered unemployed candidates, including 11,22,090 men, 7,17,555 women and 399 others as on February 21, 2023. Chandna said 6,22,043 candidates have benefit- ed till February 21, 2023 underthescheme,outof which unemployment allowance is being given to 1,90,873 eligible candidates, including 1,07,431 men and 83,442 women. From January 2019 to January 2023, a total of 1,062 employment support camps were organised and 1,08,890 young- sters benefitted from these camps. First India Bureau Udaipur: A container driver was burnt alive after the container col- lided with a trailer on Gogunda-Pindwada highway in Udaipur district on Tuesday . The incident oc- curred near Malwa cho- ra pulia when the container rammed into the trailer and caught fire. The container driver got stuck in the cabin and burnt alive. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot on information of the accident. The flames were doused later. Locals claimed that there were two persons in the container. However, police have not given any con- firmation yet. ith the exit polls to Tripura, NagalandandMeghalayaout, the West Bengal unit of the BJP has launched a mass outreach programme aimed at the rural population months ahead of the panchayat elections in West Bengal. BJP state president Sukanta Ma- jumdar launched the “Gram Samparkha Abhiyan” in the Purba Medinipur district and without wasting time, the rul- ing Trinamool Congress claimed that the saffron camp has copied its programme. “In West Bengal, under the corrupt TMC rule, the poor people do not have access to basic services like sanitisa- tion and housing facilities. The Gram Sampark Abhiyan is to assure people and listen to their problems and ensure they get the benefits of the central schemes,” Majumdar said while launching the programme. The mass outreach programme,whichwaslaunched with an eye on the panchayat polls likely to be held in April- May this year, will cover around more than 2,000 villages and 100 rural assembly constituencies of the state. It may be noted that the programmecomesnearlytwo months after the TMC had launched a mass outreach campaign, ‘Didir Suraksha Kavach’ (Didi’s Protective Shield), to check and ensure that people received benefits from the pro-people projects of the state government. “ Apart from reaching out to the people with our policies and programmes, our mass outreachprogrammeisaimed at reaching out to people in those areas, especially where the TMC leaders have faced protests,”saidBJP .Reactingto BJP’s programme, the TMC dubbed the saffron camp as a “badstudentwhoalwayswish- es to pass an exam by copying from the topper in the class.” “The BJP is just copying our programme. Referring to the suicides by a Dalit student of IIT Mumbai and a tribal student of NLU Odisha the CJI said that these “numbers are not just sta- tistics. These are stories some- times of centuries of struggles”. Therefore there was nothing new in the spat between Pun- jab Governor Banwarilal Purohit and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the convening of Assembly session until the matter reached the Supreme Court which gave both a lesson in their constitutional obligations. The contention of the government was that the gover- nor was not heeding its advice on summoning the session. The governor pointed to the chief minister’s “ex- tremely derogatory and pa- tently unconstitutional tweets” as reason for not convening the Budget session on March 3. The Punjab government moved the Supreme Court for necessary direc- tions to the governor who wanted to seek legal advice on Mann’s tweets. Moving a petition under Article 32 the state government appealed to the court to issue a declaration that the governor was bound to act on the aid and advice of the council of ministers. This is not something the Supreme Court should be telling a governor as the Constitution is clear on his role. That is what the Supreme Court bench headed by CJI DY Chandra- chud said, “However inap- propriate the tweet of the CM may be, the Assembly session cannot be delayed.” The governor was bound by aid and advice of the government. At the same time the court also pointed to the need for more civil discourse between constitutional functionaries. TMC had propagated the ‘Bengali pride’ by coining the poll slogan, “Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chai” (Bengal wants its own daughter), and had created a poll narrative to counter and trounce BJP’s identity politics in the 2021 Assembly polls ROBIN ROY The writer is Senior Journalist and former Managing Editor, First India TMC’S POLL PROSPECTS IN NE P olitical observers see the Meghalaya elections as the TMC’s best chance for ex- panding in the Northeast, a region it has been eyeing since its incep- tion in 1998. The party, however, failed to build on some successes it had in the beginning. In 2004, the party, however, got a breakthrough in Meghalaya when former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma, who had left the Nation- alist Congress Party (NCP), won from Tura Lok Sabha constituency. This success, was however, short-lived, as Sangma returned to the NCP the very next year. It may be recalled that in 2012, the TMC emerged as the main opposition in Manipur, winning seven seats, with a 17 per cent vote share. However, all this had turned sour when all the MLAs subsequently left the party to join either the Congress or the BJP. The party’s Tripura unit opened in 1999, a year after the party was initiated in West Bengal, with former Tripura chief minister, Sudhir Ranjan Majumdar, heading the state unit. Though Majumdar did not win the Lok Sabha in 1999 from Tripura West sear, he over- took the Congress in terms of the votes polled. But TMC’s Mission Tripura, the only Bengali-majority state in the region, came to a jolt- ing halt in 2002 when Majumdar returned to the Congress. However, its fortunes in Tripura remain dismal despite its attempts to revive its campaign in 2016 and 2021. The Left–Congress alliance and the rise of the TIPRA Motha in tribal-dominated areas have ef- fectively turned the election into a triangular contest between the BJP, the Left-Congress and the TIPRA Motha. Despite Mamata Banerjee and other party leaders having entered the campaign, the TMC has not quite made it in big terms. Meanwhile, political analysts feel the Left–Congress combine would be the automatic choice for anti-BJP voters in areas where the Motha doesn’t have an impact. The TMC also could not do much to build on the local leadership. All eyes are now on March 2 when the results will be out and the real picture will be revealed.

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday denied anticipatory bail to a man accused of manhandling a doctor for allegedly misbe- having with his wife while examining her at a hospital. It would be difficult for a doctor to pursue his profes- sion if a patient is aggrieved by the doctor touching him or her during clinical examination, it observed. At the same time, genuine cases of misbehaviour by doctors overstepping their limits cannot be ignored, the court added. Shivendra Parmar Jaipur: The RHB will launch various housing schemes of about 4,300 flats and independent houses today. The schemes will be launched by UDH Min- ister Shanti Dhariwal. According to the inten- tion of the Chief Minis- ter and UDH Minister Shanti Dhariwal, the Housing Board has decided to launch housing schemes in small towns and cities of districts of the state. A total of 1332 flats and independent houses will be launched in sectors 22, 23 and 26 of Pratap Nagar area in Jaipur. RHB Commissioner Pawan Arora had recently reviewed final preps by meeting with concerned officials and informed that “All the preparations related to the housing schemes have been completed. Booklets and publica- tions and the material work has also been completed,” he said. Kota: LS Speaker Om Birla will flag-off a new train from Kota to Ahmedabad at 6:45pm on March 3 from Kota Railway Station, officials informed. The train will run two days a week from Asarwa railway station and will have two second class AC coaches, 4 third class AC coaches, 7 sleepers, two general and one coach for disabled and guard. First India Bureau Jaipur: An audit conducted by the Comptrol- ler and Auditor General (CAG) on illegal mining in the State has found that there is a need for reforms to strengthen the government machinery to prevent illegal mining activities. Rajasthan has the largest number of mining leases in the country . The report for year ended March 31, 2020, which was tabled in As- sembly on Monday, shows that department didn’t use freely available new technologies such as remote sensing data to identify stop illegal mining activities. Results showed that illegal mining was taking place near 34% mining leases. Dept in- spected 14 mining leases pointed out by audit found illegal mining of 13.37L metric tonnes of minerals costing Rs 1 billion 11 cr. Dept also failed to properly use application ‘DMGOMS’ meant for monitoring mining activities.
