Introduction
• Datacenter tenants and operators exploit
dynamic compute, storage and networking
resource through virtualization within datacenters
• Software-defined Networking (SDN) allows
programmable control of virtual transport network
resources between datacenters
• We extend SDN flexibility to datacenter and
optical transport network resource orchestration
using open source software:
• OpenStack Orchestration
• OpenFlow SDN controller
• We report a PoC field demonstration using
OpenStack and OpenFlow workflow automation of
key use cases

Summary
• We demonstrated the first fully open, SDN-based
orchestration of datacenter and optical transport network
resources over field installed fiber
• Open source software OpenStack and OpenFlow used to
control commercially available optical transport equipment
• Successful workflow automation of key use cases
• It paves the way towards a synthesis of dynamic
datacenter virtualised applications and optical transport
network automation.
• Timing performance is tens of seconds (without
optimization) which is already a major improvement over
typical provisioning time currently (days, months)

Confidential.22 Introduction • Datacenter tenants and operators exploit dynamic compute, storage and networking resource through virtualization within datacenters • Software-defined Networking (SDN) allows programmable control of virtual transport network resources between datacenters • We extend SDN flexibility to datacenter and optical transport network resource orchestration using open source software: • OpenStack Orchestration • OpenFlow SDN controller • We report a PoC field demonstration using OpenStack and OpenFlow workflow automation of key use cases Software-Defined Networking Cloud Services & Big Data

Confidential.1111 Summary • We demonstrated the first fully open, SDN-based orchestration of datacenter and optical transport network resources over field installed fiber • Open source software OpenStack and OpenFlow used to control commercially available optical transport equipment • Successful workflow automation of key use cases • It paves the way towards a synthesis of dynamic datacenter virtualised applications and optical transport network automation. • Timing performance is tens of seconds (without optimization) which is already a major improvement over typical provisioning time currently (days, months)
