This document discusses how the creator's media product of a rock magazine front page, contents page, and double page spread uses and develops conventions of real rock magazines.
The front cover includes a main image, masthead, coverlines, and barcode positioned according to conventions. The contents page lists articles with images and captions, and includes contact details. The double page spread features a large headline, drop cap, drop quote, and full-width image as commonly seen in rock magazines.
While following many standard conventions, some elements like cryptic coverlines and positioning statement were designed to intrigue readers and stand out from other magazines. The creator developed conventions through their unique design choices while still maintaining recognizable codes of the genre
How My Rock Magazine Challenges and Develops Conventions
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products
2. I have produced a front
page, contents page and a
double page for a rock
magazine. All of them have
got elements that support
the codes and conventions
of a magazine. There are
some aspects of the codes
and conventions that I
have challenge and
developed.
3. Front cover
My front page supports the codes and conventions of a magazine as it has a main image, a
masthead, coverlines and a barcode.
4. My coverlines are placed on the right side of my front page as it frames my image on the
left. The coverlines don’t give in depth information about the article that is going to be
featured this will make the reader want to read on as they will be interested in finding out
for example what albums we suggest you should listen to and the ones that you shouldn’t.
Under the coverlines I have sub lines this will make the audience understand what the
article is going to be about without giving too much information.
My masthead follows the conventions of a typical music magazine as it is at the top of
the page and in a different font to the rest of text on the page. The font is also in bold so
that it attacks the attention of the reader. The direction of my masthead goes across the
top of the front page this follows the codes and conventions of a music magazine as the
masthead is typically at the top of the page.
I kept the colour scheme of my music magazine very simple with the black, red and white which runs
throughout my contents and double page spread. I used these colours as they stereotypical colours
associated to the rock genre. I followed the colour scheme code and convention as the usual amount of
colours is three or four and I used three.
On the bottom right side of my magazine I followed a code and convention of a music
magazine by adding a barcode which is surrounded by the price, website, issue number and
date.
My positioning statement is ‘The world’s most explosive magazine’ I used this statement as it relates to the
title of my magazine as other than being a title of a rock bands song supernova is a stellar explosion that
briefly outshines an entire galaxy therefore the word explosive relates. I used the worlds best so that the
audience will want to buy it as it is loved by the world
5. Contents
My contents page supports the codes and conventions of a magazine as it has multiple images, editor’s
letter and subscription details.
6. I followed a common code and convention by putting the title ‘contents’ at the top of
the page and it is the largest text on the page and it is bold.
I added 3 images onto my contents page underneath two of the images I put there page
number and the title of the article this is so it is easier for the audience to locate the
page and get an insight on what it is going to be about by the image and the caption
beneath. All of my images are different sizes depending on the importance of the story
this is conventional
My layout of the contents page follows the codes and conventions as it is set out in 3
columns so that it looks neat. All of my articles are laid out on the left side of the page that I
used for inspiration while designing my contents page. My colour scheme stayed the same as
my front page with the black, white and red as it reinforce the genre.
I put the website of my magazine on the contents page so that the audience will be able to
contact or even get exclusives online. I also put the date that the magazine is released so that
the audience will be able to know what issue they got. This is also seen by the issue number
about the date the magazine was released.

7. Double page spread
My double page spread follows the codes and conventions of a music magazine as it has a main image, page
number and a drop quote.
8. My colour scheme is the same as the other pages in the magazine as they are typical rock colours.
My title is eye catching as it is bold and bright it is in red and is the biggest text on the page. The title is short
and snappy so that the audience will be excited to read the whole article I done all of this as it follows the
codes and conventions of a music magazine.
I used a drop cap at the beginning of my article this goes on for four lines I used a drop cap
as it is a common code and convention of music magazines.
Under the title I used a drop quote this will give the audience a hint in what is to come in my article. A drop
quote is used in the majority of double page spreads in music magazines so that they can grab the attention
of the audience.
My double page spread image spread across the whole first page and carries onto the second. My image is
of the band that I have interviewed and featured
