Teacher Interview: Lorraine (Reina) Floyd
Lorraine (Reina) Floyd teaches pre-algebra and honors algebra at Irmo Middle School, home of the Yellow Jackets, in District Five of Lexington and Richland counties in South Carolina. There are 65 teachers at Irmo, 81% of whom have advanced degrees. There are 400 white, 409 African American, 40 Hispanic, and 25 Asian Pacific Islander students at Irmo; 146 of these students have disabilities, and 23 have limited English proficiency. Sixty-seven percent of the seventh and eighth graders at Irmo are enrolled in high school credit courses. In 2011, Irmo Middle School exceeded standards for progress toward the 2020 South Carolina performance vision: By 2020 all students will graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete successfully in the global economy, participate in a democratic society, and contribute positively as members of families and communities.
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
My interest in teaching was first sparked when as a young child my father regularly played “school” with me. He let me “teach” him basic math concepts like addition and subtraction well before I formally learned them in school. Later, in the eighth grade, I had the distinct pleasure of having both my language arts and social studies classes taught by Mrs. Bowers. She approached classroom management and assessment in an engaging and inspirational manner. Ultimately, I went into teaching in hopes of sparking a love of learning in students like she did with me.
Where do you find joy in teaching?
I derive my joy from watching students become more comfortable with themselves and each other as mathematicians. They build their confidence in their math abilities by discussing and supporting their thinking process. I love hearing my students participate in mathematical discourse.
It’s sad, but so many of my students start the school year with a defeatist attitude. Somewhere along the way someone sent them the message that they aren’t capable of learning, and therefore it’s not worth the time or effort. The degree to which these students gain confidence varies. At first, many of these students view my encouragement as bothering them, but the joy on their faces when they gain understanding is more than worth their initial discomfort. Unfortunately, not all of my students experience the level of success that I would like them to, but they all experience enough success in our classroom that I see an improvement in their effort and self-efficacy by the end of the year.
How would you describe excellence in teaching?
To me excellence in teaching is like perfection—it isn’t something to be obtained, but to continuously strive for. I strive to engage my students, meet them where they are, and help them rise to where they need to be.

My name is Deja, and I have to daughters Genesis and Halo. I have resided in Columbus, OH for the past nine years and graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Human Ecology. I have no direct experience has a teacher, but I have been working in schools for the past six years as a Site Manager for an after-school program. It was not until this past year where I decided I wanted to get into education and become a principal.
The MAED Program Learning Outcomes that I believe will be most beneficial and contribute to my career goals are Engage in continuous professional growth through leadership in educational environments and the demonstration of legal and ethical behavior in professional practices. Assessments are necessary for education because they keep students and teachers on track and can be used as guides for the teacher to know what information their students are gaining. Assessment can also be used for students to understand what areas they are struggling in and what areas they are doing well. Assessments are also critical in education because it helps the teacher set goals for their students and selves.

Heather Cyra has been a teacher at Guild Gray Elementary School for four years. Approximately 600 students attend kindergarten through fifth grade at Guild Gray. The school is located between an older, well-established neighborhood and low-rent apartment complexes. Student enrollment fluctuates at the school, and teachers may be asked to change grade levels when populations at specific grade levels decrease or increase. Ms. Cyra began teaching first grade but after one year she was moved to fifth grade. For as long as she remembers, she wanted to be a teacher. She knew that there would be challenges and rewards in teaching, but teachers make a difference in the world. She wanted to be creative and use the natural skills she possesses for helping people learn.
What do you see when you see excellence in teaching?
I see someone who is organized and has created an enjoyable, engaging environment—teachers who keep the students engaged in learning and also help everyone learn. I see excellence in teaching when I see teachers who have “fun” with their students; teachers who listen to their students and keep the students from being bored. Excellence in teaching is also surprising the students with unexpected activities, rewards, or information.
How do you know when your students are learning?
There are many ways to know that students are learning. You can often tell just by the looks on their faces that show whether they are confused or enlightened. You can tell by verbal cues from how the students respond to the questions you ask or how they contribute to class discussions. You can tell from a written assessment or merely a show of hands. If they are not responding the way I expect them to then I realize I have to reteach a concept or go back over something that may not have been explained in a way that they can understand. If you are tuned in to your students it is quite easy to tell when students have checked out by the way they look at you or don’t and by the responses they give you.
What brings you joy in teaching?
When I see how far the students I started out with grow in a year. By keeping track of their stages of development, I can see how much they have learned and how their attitudes and behavior have developed. When my students tell me at the end of the year that they don’t want to leave, I know that I have created a warm, nurturing environment. I feel like I am doing something right. It’s not entirely about what the tests say. As long as they’re learning, showing growth, and enjoying themselves in school and have enjoyed their fifth-grade experience I am happy and feel like I have done my job.

- 4. MISSION The North Bolivar Consolidate School District is a place where children and adults are challenged to achieve full potential in their academic, creative personal, physical, moral, and social development.
- 5. MY PHILOSOPHY FOR EDUCATION 1. Students need to learn. Students want and need to learn as much as they need food, clothing, and shelter. An educator's primary job is to fill that primal need for learning by creating engaging and relevant learning experiences every day. The greatest gift a teacher can give students is motivating them to experience repeated learning success. 2. Students need to be active participants in learning. Students learn best by doing, and active teaching encourages active learning. Teachers should treat students as active participants in the learning process, providing them with skills, such as: How to study How to take notes How to memorize How to express themselves effectively These skills will help them be part of a high-performance learning team. Also, students need to be encouraged to explore and research information beyond the confines of the classroom and textbook. 4. Students need timely feedback to improve. Teachers gather data on student performance to adjust the learning environment and instruction so that they can target students' learning needs. Teachers administer pretests to find a starting point for learning and post-tests to determine the students' increase in performance level as well as the teachers' effectiveness. 5. Students need structure and repetition to learn. A teacher should be able to organize a standards-based lesson sequence, successfully implement the plan, and then evaluate student learning. A teacher should be able to create an exciting learning environment that makes it difficult for students to not learn. A teacher should know how to include all students in learning at their own level, and a teacher should be able to inspire the students to push themselves to the next level.

- 7. RUBRIC GRADES My Grading Scale Any scores below 59 will not be recorded . Re teach and retest The target is scores 79 or higher .
- 8. HOMEWORK Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday. Homework will be assigned before class end! You are responsible for copying your homework everyday. Homework will be posted on my website, but you should not solely depend on that. Test schedules are posted on Mondays. It is your responsibility to copy it. If you get an infraction for homework- you MUST get your log signed & complete the assignment for the next day. If you forget a book for homework- call someone so you can copy, scan, or write the page you need. “I forgot it .” is not an excuse.
- 9. MAKE –UP POLICY All make-up work has to be done before the 9 weeks end! If you do not make your work up you will receive a F! ALL FINAL MAKE UP WILL BE GIVEN AT THE END OF THE 9WEEKS .. THE HIGHEST YOU CAN SCORE ON MAKE UP WORK IS 70%.
- 10. DAILY ROUTINES When you enter my Classroom I expect that you know exactly what to do. I shouldn't have to tell you everyday what to do with your homework, book, planner, etc. Here is how you will enter my classroom. As soon as you come in the door, go to your desk and get out your homework. Turn it into the basket at the back of the room.
- 11. MS.DORSEY’S CLASSROOM RULES BE RESPECTFUL BE PATIENT BE ON TIME BE PREPARED
- 12. Passing notes, and other inappropriate behaviors during class show a lack of participation and cooperation and will affect the subject grade. Raising hand in class is strongly encouraged. If you don’t understand something- ASK! It shows initiative. Your effort & behavior in class are just as important as your test grades. Cooperation is important. Do your OWN work. It’s OK to ASK for help, but NEVER let anyone do your work for you. Follow ALL the rules of the school & classroom. PARTICIPATION= COOPERATION
- 13. FINAL NOTICE! If you are staying after school for any reason- you MUST bring in a note from a parent. No drinks at recess- only a small snack. Cell phones are to be TURNED OFF & kept out of sight! IPods & video games are not permitted in school. Please keep all books covered at all times. Replenish your stationery supplies regularly. No excessive overuse of bathroom privileges.
- 14. WHAT WILL WE LEARN THIS YEAR? MOST IMPORTANTLY MATH!!!!
