The First Crusade began in 1095 AD when Pope Urban II called on Christians to retake Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the Seljuk Turks who had taken control and mistreated Christian pilgrims. Tens of thousands of Christians from France, Belgium, and England responded, including Peter the Hermit who led the ill-fated People's Crusade. The main armies took Nicea, Antioch, and ultimately Jerusalem in 1099 AD, establishing five Christian states. The Second Crusade was launched in 1147 after the fall of the important city of Edessa to the Muslims. Led by two European kings, it failed to recapture Edessa and the Muslims maintained control of the region.
