  2012…

 Future
…2002
As we move into the Information Age
we have it within our power to avoid
    unequal education hardens that
came with the developments of the
 mechanization of agriculture and in
   the Industrial Revolution. We can
reap the growth that comes from
 revolutionary technologies and use
them to eliminate, not to widen, the
disparities that exist (Clinton, 1998).
As stated by John Naughton , we are
living through the midst of a
revolution, and it's very difficult to
see what the outcome will be
    (Naughton, 2012)But today I will
     attempt to explain where this
revolution will take us in the next 10
years in regards to education, mobile
phones, video games, and Television.
2002
Education The Past Video of the
• In the late 90s, President Bill Clinton was
in the process of making sure every classroom
    classroom had connectivity to the
internet. And by the year 2002,
computers were in nearly every class
room in the US. During this time I was in
high school and each teacher had at
least one computer in their classroom,
the library had between 15 to 20
computers and there were classes that
covered MS office products. There were
also computer classes that taught CISCO,
how to repair computers and AutoCad .
• Doing research papers became easier to
do because of the ability to go to the
computer and research the internet for
    information. Teachers weren’t very in
favor of doing a lot of research from the
internet as they would limit the amount
of sources allowed from the web. No
longer did you have to search through
    encyclopedias or card catalogs.
• And remember the chalkboard. The
following video isn’t about the video
itself but rather the things you saw in
class rooms at the time: blackboard, big
    computer monitors, a Roll-in-TV from
the library, and a projector pull down
    screen.
The Present
Now 2012- Education
Today in school, kids are learning things
generations before had probably never
dreamed of due to communication technology.
No longer do classrooms have chalkboard that
kids with allergies have to deal with. When you
walk into todays school, you see SmartBoards,
which are interactive whiteboards that operates
as part of a system that includes the interactive
whiteboard, a computer, a projector and
whiteboarding software (Smart Board, 2012).
Uses for the Smart Board include teaching,
training, conducting meetings, and delivering
presentations. Very handy tool for todays
teachers. Document viewers are also pretty
popular allowing the teacher to view images
instead of using a projector and transparency
paper. Also laptops are being used now instead
of kids cramping their hands. Some schools
even have I Pads for each student to use in their
classrooms. The way in which teacher teach is
going to continue to change with the help of
Khan Academy.
2022- The Future The Future
In September of 2012 Bangladeshi-
Indian-American educator Salman
Khan launched a computer science
module with his nonprofit educational
organization and a website Khan
Academy. Khan Academy teaching is
the way of the future. Less lecturing,
more interaction. What you think of as
homework you do at school, and
school work you do at home. One
teacher referred to it as flipping the
classroom. Khan Academy is a free
online tutoring site that may have
gotten your kid out of an algebra bind
with its educational how-to videos.
Now Khan Academy is going global.
Backed by Google, Gates, and other
Internet powerhouses, Sal Khan wants
to change education worldwide, and
his approach is already being tested in
some American schools (Khan
Academy: The future of education?,
2012).
Diffusion of innovations
Education

When looking at education for the future, Roger’s Diffusion of innovations can help understand how education will change
and be adopted. There are 5 factors that determine an individuals decision as to if a technology will catch on. They are relative
advantage, compatibility, complexity or simplicity, trialability, and observability (Diffusion of innovations, 2012). First using Khan
Academy education system brings about a way in which education has changed. With the statement that homework done at
school and school work done at home show a relative advantage of teaching. The level at which this education can be adopted
because it is done online through watching video, which society is now connected to the internet by the hip with mobile devices
and tablets. It has been proven easy to use as other student that happened to come across Salman Khan’s uploaded YouTube
videos he created for his cousin. Users were able to test this technology without even knowing they were the test subjects. With
60 minutes doing a special on this innovation and new way of education it became visible to other that you could say were in the
   “Late Majority” of adaptors.
Currently I believe this innovation is in the period of “Early Adaptors”
The Past
 Mobile phones 2002
In 2002 cell phone were increasing in popularity.
Not only had the price to use these devices gone
down, but they were now being built with color
displays and was also the year the first camera
phone hit US markets allowing users to snap on the
pictures on the go (Chowdhury, 2012).
At the time there were two primary ways in which
your phone was connected to its network, either
your device was GSM (Global System for Mobile) or it
was CDMA (Code division multiple access). In the
U.S. CDMA was more dominant standard, though
worldwide it was GSM. Cingular now AT&T and T-
Mobile used GSM while Sprint and Nextel used
CDMA. Nokia and Motorola were the primary
phones distributors that were used during this time
(CDMA vs GSM, 2012).
The Present
2012- Mobile Phones
The year 2012, cell phones and carriers have
been through many dramatic changes. First all
mobiles phones that ran on an analog network
have been shut down. Between 2002 and 2012
we have seen several new technologies come to
the mobile world. From GSM came GPRS
(General Packet Radio Service) which speed data
speeds from 14.4kbps to 115kbps. Next was
EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution)
which had data speeds 3 times that of GPRS. Next
came UMTS (Universal Mobile
telecommunication System) also referred to as
Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access or
WCDMA, which was the 3G (third generation of
Mobile technology) which reach speeds of 384
kbps. This was followed by HSDPA (High Speed
Downlink Packet Access) which reaches speeds
around 7.2 Mbps and also allows for notebooks
and laptop to be tethered (donnyananda, 2012).
And also a HSUPA which is designed for providing
high uplink speeds (High-Speed Uplink Packet
Access, 2012). Together HSDPA and HSUPA
combine to form HSPA (High Speed Packet Access
) (donnyananda, 2012).
With all these technology changes, the price of
minutes has gone down and some companies
offer unlimited talk and text while you only pay
for your data (AppleInsider Staff, 2012).
2022 mobile phones The Future
By the year 2022 the landline phone would
have been phased out. Phone companies
including AT&T say deregulating land-line
phone service will increase competition and
allow carriers to invest in better technology
rather than expand a dying service (Sylvain,
2012). Global broadband prices have
dropped nearly 75 per cent between 2008
and 2011 (Sethi, 2012). The future mobile
phones are being touted as the ultimate
multifunctional devices. Some experts
predict that the mobiles of the future will
become remote controls for our whole lives,
whereas others forecast that in the future
mobile phones will literally run our lives for
us (Mobile Phones, 2012). Already some
mobile phones combine fast internet
browsing with in-built GPS and Bluetooth
technology to tell you, not only who is
nearby, but provide you with information
about those people as well.
This means that mobile phones should
encourage interpersonal interaction, in both
social and business scenarios (Mobile
Phones, 2012).
Media System Dependency Theory
• The way technology is moving especially with media,
we are being forced into having devices that are data
enabled. If landline service ends, data cost will go
down, and more people will have smartphones and
tablets. To have these devices it will be required to
  have a data package.
• The more a person depends on the media to meet
needs, the more important media will be in a person’s
life, and therefore the more effects media will have on
a person (Media systems dependency theory, 2012).
Media is no longer just in your home, it’s everywhere
you travel as long as you have a mobile device.
The Past
Video Games 2002
Ten years ago, Microsoft was coming
off their first year of their installment
of gaming consoles with the Xbox. This
system was built off of PC technology
allowing gamers to have greater
performance compared to their
competition with the PlayStation 2 and
the Nintendo GameCube. The
introduction of this product setup
what the next ten years of gaming
would go to. In the next ten years we
would see the gaming technology
advance with Xbox releasing the 360
version in 2005 followed by Sony with
PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii both
in 2006 (A History of Video Game
Consoles, 2012).
The Present
Video Games 2012
Since 2002 the have been a lot of changes in the
way video games have been played and how
consoles have become an all in one media device
offering a movie player, TV services and
connection to social media. Today’s video game
let you interact with the system. Nintendo
started a trend when they developed the Wii
console which allowed the system to mimic the
action of the user on the screen. Soon after Xbox
and PS3 released their versions similar to the Wii
called the Xbox Connect and the PS Move. No
longer do you have to go to the video store to
rent movies because now these systems allow
you to download movie to your systems hard
drive. Service such as Netflix also allow you to
combine you mail service with your gaming
console to stream movies. These consoles also
offer internet browsing capabilities along with
apps store similar to the ones you have on your
phone. Connect to social media such as Facebook
or Twitter and let your friend know what you’re
playing. Today video gamers are playing with
people from all over the world making this a
great communication tool that bridges one part
of the world to another.
Video Games 2022 The Future
There is a chance that one of the ways in
which video games are predicted to go,
will fail. In 2022, I feel there will still be
that competition between Microsoft’s
Xbox and Sony. In the early stages of PS3
and Xbox 360 there was the debate of
BluRay and HD DVDs with Blu-ray winning
the battle. The competition will be a bit
different with Xbox continuing to make
actual gaming systems while PS3. One
side you have the possibility of cloud
gaming which is a type of online gaming
that allows direct and on-demand
streaming of games onto a computer,
similar to video on demand, through the
use of a thin client, in which the actual
game is stored on the operator's or game
company's server and is streamed directly
to computers accessing the server
through the client. This allows access to
games without the need of a console and
largely makes the capability of the user's
computer unimportant (Cloud gaming,
2012).
Video Games 2022 cont
On the other hand you have David
Dennis, senior group manager for
Xbox, Microsoft who does not believe
that cloud gaming has enough
infrastructure to change the way
games are played. He made the point
that while there playing they would be
running up the meter on their data
usage, adding huge, incremental costs
on top of their standard broadband bill
(Pullen, 2012)
Uses and Gratification Theory
Uses and Gratification Theory is a approach to
understanding why and how people actively seek out
specific media to satisfy specific needs (Uses and
gratifications theory, 2012). People tend to play games
for certain reasons and needs they want to be meet.
Some people play video games to meet their need of
entertainment and excitement, while others play
videogames to meet their social needs people primarily
play games to pass time, avoid doing other things, to
cheer oneself up and just for enjoyment. Males tend to
play to win, while females tend to play for the challenge
(Boerboom, 2009).
The Past
Television 2002
In an article dated Dec. 15, 2002, Rahul
Shukla, a Hong Kong investment banker
purchased a 42-inch Fujitsu flat-screen and
spent $7,600 on this television. I myself
bought a television around this same time
paying a little under $300 for a 32 inch Sanyo
Tube television and thought at the time was
getting a great deal. Flat screen TVs were
gaining popularity quickly and companies
were spending a lot of money to
manufacture these devices. Picture quality
was becoming a popular commodity with the
popularity of video games on the rise and
High definition programming. With the
demand for the TV being so high and the
push for lower prices all companies would
not be able to survive what the future would
be headed for (Schuman, 2002).
The Present
Television 2012
Today that same Television Mr. Shukla
purchased can be bought for fraction of the
price between $400 and $1000 thus showing
how far technology has moved in the last 10
years and knowing TV have only been around
since the 1900s, less than 100 years old. For
around the same price I paid for my 32inch
Sanyo years before, I was able to buy a flat
screen bigger and with better picture quality
due to the next move in TVs. Not only are
televisions getting bigger reaching sizes up to
around 90 inches for the home, but their also
coming in 3D format. But even these 3D
televisions are dropping in price compared to
when they first hit US market (White, 2012).
The way in which we get our viewing has also
changed. Today you can purchase a television
with built in apps along with access to the
internet to allow viewing through sites such
as Netflix, Hulu, and even listen to music
through Pandora.
Television 2022 The Future
The future of the television is going to
be 3D and also 4D. By 2022 3D
television will be a norm in the homes
of individuals with movie theaters
caring 4D televisions along with
seating that moves with the picture
(Davies, 2012). By this time movies will
also be available for home purchase.
What this means is the movie that is
set to hit the big screen this upcoming
Friday can now paid for a viewed at
home for a higher price. Viewer would
be charged much like they are for PPV
boxing matches and would be allowed
to view the program for up to 48 hours
(Nakashima, 2011).
Rogers' Diffusion Theory

Rogers' Diffusion Theory can also be used to explain
where and how fast new television technologies will
take off (Diffusion of innovations, 2012). The demand
for smaller and faster technology hasn’t slowed down as
stated earlier a television purchased in 2002 rear $7000
can now be purchased for around $1000 and this is due
to the rate at which technology is moving. The number
of years it’s taking for new major technologies to enter
over 50% of homes is decreasing at an astonishing rate.
So it’s only a matter of time before each home has at
least one 3D ready television and everyone know a
theater that has 4D technology.

  • 1. A Glimps 2022 into the 2012… Future …2002
  • 2. As we move into the Information Age we have it within our power to avoid unequal education hardens that came with the developments of the mechanization of agriculture and in the Industrial Revolution. We can reap the growth that comes from revolutionary technologies and use them to eliminate, not to widen, the disparities that exist (Clinton, 1998). As stated by John Naughton , we are living through the midst of a revolution, and it's very difficult to see what the outcome will be (Naughton, 2012)But today I will attempt to explain where this revolution will take us in the next 10 years in regards to education, mobile phones, video games, and Television.
  • 3. 2002 Education The Past Video of the • In the late 90s, President Bill Clinton was in the process of making sure every classroom classroom had connectivity to the internet. And by the year 2002, computers were in nearly every class room in the US. During this time I was in high school and each teacher had at least one computer in their classroom, the library had between 15 to 20 computers and there were classes that covered MS office products. There were also computer classes that taught CISCO, how to repair computers and AutoCad . • Doing research papers became easier to do because of the ability to go to the computer and research the internet for information. Teachers weren’t very in favor of doing a lot of research from the internet as they would limit the amount of sources allowed from the web. No longer did you have to search through encyclopedias or card catalogs. • And remember the chalkboard. The following video isn’t about the video itself but rather the things you saw in class rooms at the time: blackboard, big computer monitors, a Roll-in-TV from the library, and a projector pull down screen.
  • 4. The Present Now 2012- Education Today in school, kids are learning things generations before had probably never dreamed of due to communication technology. No longer do classrooms have chalkboard that kids with allergies have to deal with. When you walk into todays school, you see SmartBoards, which are interactive whiteboards that operates as part of a system that includes the interactive whiteboard, a computer, a projector and whiteboarding software (Smart Board, 2012). Uses for the Smart Board include teaching, training, conducting meetings, and delivering presentations. Very handy tool for todays teachers. Document viewers are also pretty popular allowing the teacher to view images instead of using a projector and transparency paper. Also laptops are being used now instead of kids cramping their hands. Some schools even have I Pads for each student to use in their classrooms. The way in which teacher teach is going to continue to change with the help of Khan Academy.
  • 5. 2022- The Future The Future In September of 2012 Bangladeshi- Indian-American educator Salman Khan launched a computer science module with his nonprofit educational organization and a website Khan Academy. Khan Academy teaching is the way of the future. Less lecturing, more interaction. What you think of as homework you do at school, and school work you do at home. One teacher referred to it as flipping the classroom. Khan Academy is a free online tutoring site that may have gotten your kid out of an algebra bind with its educational how-to videos. Now Khan Academy is going global. Backed by Google, Gates, and other Internet powerhouses, Sal Khan wants to change education worldwide, and his approach is already being tested in some American schools (Khan Academy: The future of education?, 2012).
  • 6. Diffusion of innovations Education When looking at education for the future, Roger’s Diffusion of innovations can help understand how education will change and be adopted. There are 5 factors that determine an individuals decision as to if a technology will catch on. They are relative advantage, compatibility, complexity or simplicity, trialability, and observability (Diffusion of innovations, 2012). First using Khan Academy education system brings about a way in which education has changed. With the statement that homework done at school and school work done at home show a relative advantage of teaching. The level at which this education can be adopted because it is done online through watching video, which society is now connected to the internet by the hip with mobile devices and tablets. It has been proven easy to use as other student that happened to come across Salman Khan’s uploaded YouTube videos he created for his cousin. Users were able to test this technology without even knowing they were the test subjects. With 60 minutes doing a special on this innovation and new way of education it became visible to other that you could say were in the “Late Majority” of adaptors. Currently I believe this innovation is in the period of “Early Adaptors”
  • 7. The Past Mobile phones 2002 In 2002 cell phone were increasing in popularity. Not only had the price to use these devices gone down, but they were now being built with color displays and was also the year the first camera phone hit US markets allowing users to snap on the pictures on the go (Chowdhury, 2012). At the time there were two primary ways in which your phone was connected to its network, either your device was GSM (Global System for Mobile) or it was CDMA (Code division multiple access). In the U.S. CDMA was more dominant standard, though worldwide it was GSM. Cingular now AT&T and T- Mobile used GSM while Sprint and Nextel used CDMA. Nokia and Motorola were the primary phones distributors that were used during this time (CDMA vs GSM, 2012).
  • 8. The Present 2012- Mobile Phones The year 2012, cell phones and carriers have been through many dramatic changes. First all mobiles phones that ran on an analog network have been shut down. Between 2002 and 2012 we have seen several new technologies come to the mobile world. From GSM came GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) which speed data speeds from 14.4kbps to 115kbps. Next was EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) which had data speeds 3 times that of GPRS. Next came UMTS (Universal Mobile telecommunication System) also referred to as Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access or WCDMA, which was the 3G (third generation of Mobile technology) which reach speeds of 384 kbps. This was followed by HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) which reaches speeds around 7.2 Mbps and also allows for notebooks and laptop to be tethered (donnyananda, 2012). And also a HSUPA which is designed for providing high uplink speeds (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access, 2012). Together HSDPA and HSUPA combine to form HSPA (High Speed Packet Access ) (donnyananda, 2012). With all these technology changes, the price of minutes has gone down and some companies offer unlimited talk and text while you only pay for your data (AppleInsider Staff, 2012).
  • 9. 2022 mobile phones The Future By the year 2022 the landline phone would have been phased out. Phone companies including AT&T say deregulating land-line phone service will increase competition and allow carriers to invest in better technology rather than expand a dying service (Sylvain, 2012). Global broadband prices have dropped nearly 75 per cent between 2008 and 2011 (Sethi, 2012). The future mobile phones are being touted as the ultimate multifunctional devices. Some experts predict that the mobiles of the future will become remote controls for our whole lives, whereas others forecast that in the future mobile phones will literally run our lives for us (Mobile Phones, 2012). Already some mobile phones combine fast internet browsing with in-built GPS and Bluetooth technology to tell you, not only who is nearby, but provide you with information about those people as well. This means that mobile phones should encourage interpersonal interaction, in both social and business scenarios (Mobile Phones, 2012).
  • 10. Media System Dependency Theory • The way technology is moving especially with media, we are being forced into having devices that are data enabled. If landline service ends, data cost will go down, and more people will have smartphones and tablets. To have these devices it will be required to have a data package. • The more a person depends on the media to meet needs, the more important media will be in a person’s life, and therefore the more effects media will have on a person (Media systems dependency theory, 2012). Media is no longer just in your home, it’s everywhere you travel as long as you have a mobile device.
  • 11. The Past Video Games 2002 Ten years ago, Microsoft was coming off their first year of their installment of gaming consoles with the Xbox. This system was built off of PC technology allowing gamers to have greater performance compared to their competition with the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube. The introduction of this product setup what the next ten years of gaming would go to. In the next ten years we would see the gaming technology advance with Xbox releasing the 360 version in 2005 followed by Sony with PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii both in 2006 (A History of Video Game Consoles, 2012).
  • 12. The Present Video Games 2012 Since 2002 the have been a lot of changes in the way video games have been played and how consoles have become an all in one media device offering a movie player, TV services and connection to social media. Today’s video game let you interact with the system. Nintendo started a trend when they developed the Wii console which allowed the system to mimic the action of the user on the screen. Soon after Xbox and PS3 released their versions similar to the Wii called the Xbox Connect and the PS Move. No longer do you have to go to the video store to rent movies because now these systems allow you to download movie to your systems hard drive. Service such as Netflix also allow you to combine you mail service with your gaming console to stream movies. These consoles also offer internet browsing capabilities along with apps store similar to the ones you have on your phone. Connect to social media such as Facebook or Twitter and let your friend know what you’re playing. Today video gamers are playing with people from all over the world making this a great communication tool that bridges one part of the world to another.
  • 13. Video Games 2022 The Future There is a chance that one of the ways in which video games are predicted to go, will fail. In 2022, I feel there will still be that competition between Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony. In the early stages of PS3 and Xbox 360 there was the debate of BluRay and HD DVDs with Blu-ray winning the battle. The competition will be a bit different with Xbox continuing to make actual gaming systems while PS3. One side you have the possibility of cloud gaming which is a type of online gaming that allows direct and on-demand streaming of games onto a computer, similar to video on demand, through the use of a thin client, in which the actual game is stored on the operator's or game company's server and is streamed directly to computers accessing the server through the client. This allows access to games without the need of a console and largely makes the capability of the user's computer unimportant (Cloud gaming, 2012).
  • 14. Video Games 2022 cont On the other hand you have David Dennis, senior group manager for Xbox, Microsoft who does not believe that cloud gaming has enough infrastructure to change the way games are played. He made the point that while there playing they would be running up the meter on their data usage, adding huge, incremental costs on top of their standard broadband bill (Pullen, 2012)
  • 15. Uses and Gratification Theory Uses and Gratification Theory is a approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs (Uses and gratifications theory, 2012). People tend to play games for certain reasons and needs they want to be meet. Some people play video games to meet their need of entertainment and excitement, while others play videogames to meet their social needs people primarily play games to pass time, avoid doing other things, to cheer oneself up and just for enjoyment. Males tend to play to win, while females tend to play for the challenge (Boerboom, 2009).
  • 16. The Past Television 2002 In an article dated Dec. 15, 2002, Rahul Shukla, a Hong Kong investment banker purchased a 42-inch Fujitsu flat-screen and spent $7,600 on this television. I myself bought a television around this same time paying a little under $300 for a 32 inch Sanyo Tube television and thought at the time was getting a great deal. Flat screen TVs were gaining popularity quickly and companies were spending a lot of money to manufacture these devices. Picture quality was becoming a popular commodity with the popularity of video games on the rise and High definition programming. With the demand for the TV being so high and the push for lower prices all companies would not be able to survive what the future would be headed for (Schuman, 2002).
  • 17. The Present Television 2012 Today that same Television Mr. Shukla purchased can be bought for fraction of the price between $400 and $1000 thus showing how far technology has moved in the last 10 years and knowing TV have only been around since the 1900s, less than 100 years old. For around the same price I paid for my 32inch Sanyo years before, I was able to buy a flat screen bigger and with better picture quality due to the next move in TVs. Not only are televisions getting bigger reaching sizes up to around 90 inches for the home, but their also coming in 3D format. But even these 3D televisions are dropping in price compared to when they first hit US market (White, 2012). The way in which we get our viewing has also changed. Today you can purchase a television with built in apps along with access to the internet to allow viewing through sites such as Netflix, Hulu, and even listen to music through Pandora.
  • 18. Television 2022 The Future The future of the television is going to be 3D and also 4D. By 2022 3D television will be a norm in the homes of individuals with movie theaters caring 4D televisions along with seating that moves with the picture (Davies, 2012). By this time movies will also be available for home purchase. What this means is the movie that is set to hit the big screen this upcoming Friday can now paid for a viewed at home for a higher price. Viewer would be charged much like they are for PPV boxing matches and would be allowed to view the program for up to 48 hours (Nakashima, 2011).
  • 19. Rogers' Diffusion Theory Rogers' Diffusion Theory can also be used to explain where and how fast new television technologies will take off (Diffusion of innovations, 2012). The demand for smaller and faster technology hasn’t slowed down as stated earlier a television purchased in 2002 rear $7000 can now be purchased for around $1000 and this is due to the rate at which technology is moving. The number of years it’s taking for new major technologies to enter over 50% of homes is decreasing at an astonishing rate. So it’s only a matter of time before each home has at least one 3D ready television and everyone know a theater that has 4D technology.
