1. TEAM SURPRISE

2. ● The best way to learn another language is to
speak with a native speaker.
● This is especially true in learning how to listen
and speak.
● But many language-learners find it difficult to
do so; they may not know a native speaker, or,
even if they do, they may feel ashamed or
afraid of making mistakes.

3. Fische provides users with the experience of
speaking to a native speaker, without the
potential humiliation. Our in-ear device can be
used to talk - out loud or through texting - to
an AI in a foreign language. Though the device
can be used as a stand-alone piece, there is
also an app component that gives users more
control over their experience.

7. Conflict between the ability to understand and the ability
to talk . This means some users will only be able to listen
to the chatbot, not reply. There should be an option to
allow them to try speaking just a little bit.
Solution: when users NOD, the chatbot provides example
answers.
● “I can recognize some keywords, but I can’t make a
sentence”
● “To be able to speak, you have to really own the
language. To be able to understand you just need to
recognize parts of the sentence.”
● “My Korean grammar is absolutely horrendous, would
it be able to recognise it?”

8. People seem uncomfortable speaking a language they
are not fluent at in front of people.
Because users will not want to use our app during social
situations that are uncomfortable, they will only want to
talk to the AI when they are alone or walking. Therefore,
we should include a silent and inconspicuous way to
interact with the AI.
Solution: add a chat-by-text component
● “I don’t want to sound like a complete idiot to random
strangers”
● “I wouldn’t use in the subway, I feel guilty being loud.
But when I’m walking in the street, or waiting for
someone, I could talk to it.”
● “Most often when I’m on my bed.”
“Before I go to sleep.”
“I spend time idly on my phone when I have
nobody to talk to and I'm overwhelmed by what's
going on in my life.”

9. Users want to know when they are wrong. However, at
the same time they don't want to feel ashamed and they
don't want the flow of the conversation to be hindered.
A sense of embarrassment can end a conversation with
a native speaker or even prevent it from happening
Solution: don’t let the chatbot correct users out loud.
Only correct users through colored text on the app.
● “When talking to my girlfriend, I want her to correct
me every single time, even for minor mistakes.”
● “I want the chatbot to record my mistake frequency,
and then if I mess up over three times, then it should
correct me. But if doesn’t harm the overall meaning, it
doesn’t have to tell me.”
● I’m kind of shy. It’s so hard trying to use my broken
Korean. It’s just so embarrassing to me!

10. Users were concerned over security.
Solution:
1) An account with a password may give users a
sense of security.
2) Exclude the camera.
● “I don’t know about the camera… I don’t know where
that information is being sent to.”
“Also, I don’t think it’s safe to give people small
cameras. You don’t know what they’ll do with them.”
● “Sometimes I talk about some personal stuff, and
then you record it and make it into text, if I can’t
encrypt the text, or if the text is uploaded online….
Just for personal reasons.”
● “Including a camera seems expensive and I think
there would be privacy issues as well. “

12. COLOURS
“A fish in water” refers to someone who is comfortable, and
able to navigate their situation with ease and finesse.
Our hope is that the user will be like a fish in water in their
foreign language environment.
The BI reflects our goal to provide an immersive environment
- the same way that water completely surrounds and
submerges the fish.
