Technology tips for the 21st century librarian teaching the 21st century student presentation
1. Technology Tips for the 21st
Century Librarian Teaching the 21st
Century Student Presentation
Slide 1 (2 minutes)
*Welcome to Technology Tips for the 21st
Century Librarian, Teaching the 21st
Century
Student Presentation. Iwas inspired to do this presentation because of the current ever changing
state of education.
Slide 2 (5 minutes)
*My name is Brianne Nelson. I have been teaching in the classroom for 15 years,
mainly in lower elementary grades. I am currently enrolled in graduate school at Old Dominion
University and I am seeking my Masters in Library Science. At this time in my career, I am ready to
broaden my horizons from one classroom to an entire school. I want to be able to reach out to
more students as well as more faculty members. I want to engage students by integrating technology
into curricular lessons. To me, a library is more than just a place to check out books. A library
should be the hub of the school with small groups researching, students using Maker Space, and
students learning to be digital citizens. Iwant to bring excitement to reading with promotions and
incentives. My experience with teaching reading and language arts, my desire to integrate technology
into the curriculum, and my drive to make reading fun for students is what pushes me to pursue a
career as a library media specialist. Iam going to spend the next half hour discussing some of my
favorite technology tools and how they can be applied to your curriculum needs.
Slide 3 (4 minutes)
*Please read this quote and take a minute to think about how it applies to your school,
school library and your career. “The Future Forward Librarian is always looking for opportunities to
serve as an instructional leader-and very few of us imagined this is what we would be doing when
we decided to become librarians.” Many of you have been in library and are witnessing the small
changes that are taking place. Students are changing so it’s our responsibility to change and evolve
with them. We need to make sure they have the tools to be successful.
Slide 4 and Slide 5 and Slide 6 (8 minutes)
*What student is not waiting for their own personal moment to have a mike drop? Well,
know they can have it! Vocaroo is an online voice recording program. It is extremely user friendly
for both reluctant teachers and students. You simply go to vocaroo.com and just start recording.
There are endless library and classroom adaptations for this tool. (Move to slide 5)
*My favorite use of this tool is having the students’ record their voice reading a piece of
material. After the student, records they have the option to redo or save. After saving, the kids can
submit their work to the teacher or even email it to a parent. Please listen to this child read a book,
she is a reluctant reader but loved the thought of being recorded. She is six years old and pressed
record and stop on her own. (Listening to link). The next clip you are going to listen to is a teacher
reading a piece of material. I would have this available at an independent listening station. Students
2. love to listen to people in their school reading books. You could even have different guest readers
throughout the year. (Listening to link). Another option is to piggy back on the adult reading and
have a response sheet for the student.
Slide 7 and Slide 8 and Slide 9 (8 minutes)
Who doesn’t like free field trips? With my next tool, you can whisk your students off to
many locations all around the world. For many people the green screen seems to be a very scary and
daunting project, but in reality it’s not. To get started, you need a very minimal amount supplies. All
it takes is an iPad with a green screen app and a green piece of fabric. Some apps costs a fee and
some are free. When you are your students are ready to start, you do need to make sure the kids
who are going to be filmed do not wear green shirts. Please take a look at some students using the
green screen. (Show the video). There are several curriculum match ups when using the green
screen. It can be applied to many grade levels. (Iwill discuss some different teaching ideas, based on
audience)
Slide 10 and Slide 11 and Slide 12 (8 minutes)
Flipgrid is a video discussion community. At first I was apprehensive about this program
because I do not like to see myself on any type of screen. After using this program, I see the
endless value of this tool in the classroom. Luckily children don’t mind filming themselves and they
definitely don’t mind talking, so this tool really just combines the best of both worlds! The teacher
sets up the discussion forum and then sends out a code for the students. Once the students put in
the code, all they have to do is add their response. Students can also view other students’ responses,
as well. I have included a response to the question you see here, “What is your favorite Laura
Numeroff story?” Please take a look. (1 minute) Flipgrid has many curriculum match-ups and can
be used in every subject. From discussing pieces of music to talking about works of arts. (I will
discuss some different teaching ideas, based on audience)
Slide 13 and Slide 14 (8 minutes)
There is a reason why I put QR codes at the end of the presentation. QR Codes would be
the first tool I would recommend to anyone starting out and who wants to start incorporating
technology into their teaching. The codes are very easy to make and very easy to use. My
kindergarteners are able to grab an iPad, open the QR code reader app and scan all independently. I
have included some uses of QR codes, but really there are endless uses and I always love to see how
they are being used. These QR codes can also incorporate some of the tools we covered earlier in
the presentation. When scanned, one code will take you to a video about a caterpillar emerging
from a cocoon, the next code is Eric Carle reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the final code
takes you to PebbleGo! All three codes can used in conjunction with each other as well. (Iwill
discuss some different teaching ideas, based on audience)
3. Slide 15 (3 minutes)
This concludes my technology tips session. I hope you found these tips helpful and useful.
I know that I am scared, but I am ready to take on a technology challenge this year. My students are
changing and I need to change and evolve with them. Are there any questions or comments. Thank
You!
