Digital Literacy
From the basics of the internet to thinking critically about the
content you create and consume, let’s learn digital literacy
Becoming A Digital Citizen
The power is in your hands, literally 🤗
Our world is made up of lots of systems, laws and groupings that we’ve created
over time 📅
Because humans are in the habit of constantly changing and evolving, we’ve now
created a world that lives online in the digital space 🌐🌍
From payments, to shopping, to work, school and even relationships 🤗 - almost
everything we do today can be done in the digital world.
This world is open to everyone, and offers countless ways to create, connect and
find opportunities you could never have imagined 🌅
Becoming A Digital Citizen
The digital world is open to all that know how to use it 😎
The best part is, you don’t even have to leave your couch to visit this world, because it’s all right
here - in the palm of your hand. 🖐
As a digital citizen you can do the following things:
● Pay bills through online banking
● Shop through apps and online orders
● Learn new skills through online courses
● Search for information, ideas and inspiration
● Connect with friends and family through social media
Becoming A Digital Citizen
● Your digital footprint can be easily traced and never
removed.
● As we browse, interact with others, publish content and
engage with online activities, we create a trail of data that’s
like a footprint. 👣👣👣
● Think carefully about what you’re sharing online 🤗🏾
● Now that you know that your digital footprint follows you in all
your online activity, take some time to think about how you’d
change what you do online.💭
Becoming A Digital Citizen
● Think carefully about how your actions might impact another 🤗
● Even though our lives are divided between the real and the digital,
both worlds can still affect each other and your digital footprint can
leave a mark in your real life.🤗
● This means that as a digital citizen, you need to act responsibly and
for the good of those around you at all times.
● Being a responsible digital citizen means being aware of how your
online activity impacts you and the people you know.🤗🏿🤗🤗🏿🤗🏾🤗🤗
🏼🤗🏼🤗🤗🏿🤗🤗🏽🤗🏼🤗🤗🏼🤗🏾🤗🤗🏾
● It’s about thinking carefully about what you read, where you visit, what
you share and how you communicate with others online.🤗
● Be conscious of the effects of your digital footprint 🙏
Becoming A Digital Citizen
● Now that you know what a digital citizen looks like 😏 let’s
learn about what it takes to start living like one too.
● To do this, you’ll need to work on your digital literacy. 📖
● Digital literacy is all about using digital tools to help you
navigate the digital world with ease so that you can get
ahead in life.
● Your mobile phone is just one of the many devices that can
help you do that. 🤗
Learn your A,B,C’s of digital literacy.
● Accessibility gives you the power to connect and search for the things
you need.
● From internet searches to Facebook posts, having a world of information
at your fingertips means you’re always close to an answer, making
solutions more accessible to you than ever before. 💡📱
● Protecting yourself and others is key to living online ☝🏾
● Digital literacy helps keep your private information safe from online
criminals*🔒*
● Knowing how to stay safe not only protects you but it provides a safer
environment for all to enjoy online. 🛡🤗
Learn your A,B,C’s of digital literacy.
● The more you connect, the more you grow 🌱
● Digital Literacy is about learning how to communicate online in the best
way possible so that you can keep growing the quality of your
connections into future possibilities.🌱
● Looking for a job? Digital Literacy will give you the edge 🌈
● Most jobs these days expect you to have a good understanding of digital
literacy. From writing emails to connecting on social media - these tools
are all designed to help you create the world you want for yourself. 🌎
● Your mobile phone has everything you need to start practicing your
digital literacy right away.
Let’s get to know the power of your mobile phone 💪
🏾
● Smartphones and tablets are now just about as useful as laptops and
computers. 🖥🤗
● Most of them allow you to look up information in the same way computers
and laptops do, and this saves you time and money*💰*
● Smart devices can operate almost as well as computers can 🤗🏾
● Your phone can do amazing things 🤗 if you know where to look and what
to do.
● You get to decide how you want your phone set up 😎
● You have total control over how you want your phone to look and
behave.
● You can manage this by using the Settings icon ⚙️ to control everything
from the volume of your notifications to the way your lock screen works.
This is also where you can tell how much storage space you're using💾
Keep your device secure 🔐
A few things you should do to protect your device to help protect your information
and keep your device safe and secure Bida 🔐
🤗🤗
Always update your device system update whenever requested. The device will
let you know that it needs to be updated.
⚙️ Take time to understand the security settings on your device.
🤗 Be careful when downloading apps. Stick to apps you trust and carefully think
about the permission required.
Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥
● Think of your phone as a car and the internet as a
map 🚗
● The internet is a digital highway made up of words,
sounds, images and video that lead to any source
of info you’re looking for 👀
● You’re part of 3.6 billion people using the Internet
right now! 😮
Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥
In the same way a car won’t come to life without petrol, the internet
needs data or a working connection.
How you connect is simple 🤗 You can either:
🔨 Buy data from your network provider.
🔨Connect to Wi-Fi (a wireless internet connection)
🔨Use a modem (a small device which gives you internet access)
Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥
● Think of websites as small shops that make up the large shopping
mall called the internet 🌍You can only access the internet through
web browsers.
● Google Chrome, Safari, FireFox and Opera Mini. I suggest using
Google Chrome 👆🏾
● Next thing you need to know about the internet is something called
a URL ☝🏾This is the address that you’ll see at the top of your
browser tab and usually begins with www:
● Every website will have a unique URL.
Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥
● Emails let you write formal, direct messages to anyone, anywhere 😃
● You’ve been in a post office, right? 📩 It’s a simple process: someone
writes a letter, posts it to you and you either have it delivered to your
home address or to a post box 📨
● Before sending a mail, make sure you’re sending it to the right email
address 😱
● Also remember to check the spelling and make sure the person you’re
sending your email to knows there’s an attachment (if you’ve added
one) 🙌🏾
Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥
● There are over 3 billion active users on social media today 😮
● Social media allows you to connect, share and chat with people from all
over the world 🌍
● From photography to politics, social media is like a media network or
newspaper with people around the world sharing, reading and having
conversations about all kinds of stories from real life 🗣
● Growing an audience on social media requires hard work and consistent
engagement with the platform 👩💻
● Did you know that if you reach a certain following on Youtube, Youtube
will start paying you for being there? 🤗
Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥
● Here are some social media sites you can start exploring
today:
● Facebook: connect and share life experiences with friends.
● Instagram: share your daily story with the world.
● Twitter: engage with the latest news and conversation from
the ground.
● TikTok: a fun place to make and share funny videos.
● LinkedIn: share everything there is to know about your
professional life.
Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥
● Whatever your interest, there’s an App for it! 😎
● An App (or Application) is a service you can download onto your mobile
phone for easier, quicker access to that service 🚀 For example, instead
of visiting your bank via its website, you can download their App directly
onto your phone and bank from there 👩💻
● Apps will make your digital experience easier and more accessible 🤗
● To get an App on your phone, visit Google Play store or App Store to
download them. But remember, never download an app from a dodgy
site, or from somewhere that expects you to give over your banking
details. Safety first, always! 🔓
● Now that you’re fully equipped with five awesome digital tools, I can’t wait
to see you make them work for you. Let’s go! 👊🏾
Online Safety
● Make sure that every click you make is safe👮🏾
● The internet is full of opportunity, but it can also be full of crime if you're
not careful 😕 Learning how to stay safe online is a key characteristic of
your digital citizenship. Let's get into it 👊🏾
● Cybercriminals are really smart, and they're after any kind of private
information you can give them ☠️ From banking details to passwords and
even your identity, cybercriminals will try every trick in the book to get it
👀
● Do you know of the ways cybercriminals can steal your data 👀
● Your online safety begins with knowing how to manage your privacy
settings.
App Permissions
● Limit what apps can access 🎛
● Your privacy is a huge part of your online safety 🙇🏾 You have the power
to decide what info an app is and isn't allowed to access on your phone
📱
● Never give permission to an app that wants access to your banking or
email accounts ❌
● It's time to head to the App Store or Play Store now and work on your
app permissions while you take a breather 😎
● Now that you know how to give apps certain permissions, it's time to
learn how to keep that info safe ✍️
Never use simple passwords like 12345
● Having a simple password is like locking your door with string 🔗 Not
wise at all.
● Your password should be hard for someone to guess but easy for you
to remember 💻
● Strong passwords have a mix of letters, special characters, and
numbers
● A strong password makes it harder for people to access your info 💪🏾
● Take a moment to consider what passwords you've made for your
accounts. How easy would it be for a cyber criminals to guess them 🤗
Here's a checklist of how to create stronger passwords
for your accounts 📝
Never use personal names or info in your password, and most importantly
- never share this password with anyone, not even your pet 😸
A strong password should have:
1. At least one number
2. At least one symbol
3. At least one lowercase and one uppercase letter.
4. At least seven characters
Free Wi-Fi isn’t safe Wi-Fi
Your information is always at risk when you use a public Wi-Fi connection 👆🏾
When using public Wi-Fi, a third party could snoop on your emails, passwords or other
sensitive info 😟 But there are ways you can keep safe 📶
If it's not a work or personal connection, it's better to be safe than sorry 🤗
It's simple enough isn't it? Why not look through some of the networks you've
connected to before, which one's would you consider unsafe? 📵
Treat all Wi-Fi links with suspicion. If it's not a work or personal connection, it's better
to be safe than sorry 🤗
It's simple enough isn't it? Why not look through some of the networks you've
connected to before, which one's would you consider unsafe? 📵
Smishing is a scam sent via SMS
Smishing is another popular scam that happens over SMS 🤗🏾
A smishing SMS will send you dangerous, fake links via SMS 😯
They steal through those fake links
Another popular smishing scam involves you having won A LOT of money. Sound
familiar 🤗
Unfortunately, if something seems too good to be true - it is 🤗
Vishing is a phone call from a scam artist
Have you ever received a phone call from a stranger asking for personal
information about you? This is called a Vishing scam 📞
We call cyber criminals scam artists because they are good at pretending to be
professionals that you might trust 🤗
Your bank would never ask for your One Time Pin or passwords ☝🏾 If you get an
unexpected message with a One Time Pin, contact your network. Someone may
be trying to steal your info 📵
Social media scams
And what about Social Media? Scam artists love to prey on your emotional
connection with people to try trick you into stealing money 💸 This happens when
they steal the identity of a friend and then pretend to be them 👥
This is how:
Never give money to a friend without phoning them directly to confirm it was them
💯
Every day there are new and creative scams being created. It's up to you, Bida to
stay vigilant and suspicious of all activity you encounter online 👩💻 Remember.
NEVER EVER share your personal information with anyone over the phone, via
sms or email 🙅♂❌
How to make good decisions online
● As a digital citizen, you’ll soon be spending a lot of time on the internet
exploring all kinds of news, opinions and stories 🤗
● To stay focused and aware of the content you’re creating and consuming,
you need to be able to think critically about it🤗
● Critically thinking cuts through the noise online.
● You need to be able to think clearly about all the information you find
online 👀
● Without critical thinking skills, you can be easily manipulated, deceived,
or led to conclusions that others want you to have 😧
● You need strong critical thinking skills so that you can maintain your own
beliefs and reach your own conclusions 🙂
● But how do you do that? 🤗
Question everything!
Critical thinking gives you better judgement as it allows you to view information from an
objective point of view ⚖️
When you think critically you don’t take anything you read at face value 📚
This means you don’t just absorb and accept everything you read, you instead
approach content with questions and curiosity 🙋
Critical thinking is about learning how to think for yourself. It involves learning how to:
🔎 Analyse and evaluate information and arguments
⛓️ See patterns and connections
📝 Identify and build meaningful information.
Critical thinking
Anyone can become a critical thinker; all you need to do is learn how
to ask the right questions and find solutions before jumping to
conclusions when faced with a problem 💭
Let’s look at examples of how we can use critical thinking to analyse
information online 🤗
Blog posts are a good place to start practicing your critical thinking ☝🏾
To think critically, ask yourself questions:
Apply these questions to everything you read and see online 🤓
After analysing all of this information, what do you think about the
blog post?
1. Who wrote it?
2. Who is it aimed at?
3. Who would know more about it?
4. Where does this information come from?
5. Who are the sources?
6. Who might be funding this?
Weigh up your options when you are making a decision
Try gather all the information you can about a subject before making a decision
about it 🙌🏾
Let’s say, for example, you want to buy a new phone but you’re not sure which
one to get. You need to look at your options critically. This is how:
📱 Consider all the features of the phone.
🤗 Compare the quality of those features to other phones in the market within the
same price range
👍👎 What are the pro’s and con’s of your phone?
📖 Read customers reviews of your phone
Weigh up your options when you are making a decision
● As you test your decision-making skills, you may also
need to consider how other people are affected by these
decisions*🤗*
● The best way to do this is with respect and boundaries🙅
Fake News is damaging to society
● We’ve all seen some headlines that seem just too crazy to be true, right?
📰
● Unfortunately, those headlines are usually all fake and are designed to
grab your attention, mislead you and even damage reputations 🤗
● As a digital citizen, it’s up to you to become vigilant about what news you
choose to consume as the truth ☝🏾 Let me show you how to spot the
fake in your feed 🕵🤗
● Never share information that seems fake ☝🏾
● So how do you spot something that’s fake? Here are some tell-tale signs
🛑
Fake news has a fake author
There are no credible sources to fake news articles 🤗
The source is the person or publication that captured an image or has information
about the actual news event 🙋♂
By verifying information and checking if it is true before publishing it or sending it
to anyone else, you can prevent misinformation and the spread of fake news ✋🏾
Fake news articles will try trick you into reading the article by writing sensational
headlines that are sometimes too crazy to be true 😳
Fake news articles catch you out by presenting exaggerated facts and headlines
🤗 Look at this example of a fake news headline designed to shock you into
reading it 😲
Fake news will try to shock you
● What’s your immediate reaction to
this headline?
● If you can sense a strong
emotional reaction to a headline,
it's a sign that it could be fake ❌
● The problem here is that if people
react strongly to something they
will want to share it quickly, which
can lead to fake news spreading or
even "going viral"📈
If you’re still unsure of whether or not it’s fake news,
here’s some more questions you can use to get to the
bottom of it 👊🏾
Learning to identify true and reliable information is a
basic skill part of digital literacy 🤗
Lastly, you need to analyse evidence closely 👀
A trustworthy news story will usually include plenty of
evidence in the form of quotes from experts, survey data,
official statistics, images or detailed eye-witness
accounts from people on the scene 🗄🤗
If a story has these, you probably don't have much to
worry about 😇
Speaking of Google, it’s a great tool for fact-checking and
for research.
Search engines deliver information quickly
● When it comes to looking for information on the internet, search engines
are your most useful tool 🛠🤗
● Let’s spend some time getting to know the ins and outs of this feature
and how it can help you get to what you’re looking for 👀
● You don’t need to find information manually, search engines perform
searches at high speeds 🚀
● A search engine is a website where you can search through internet
content by entering a search term into the search field 🔍
● The search engine then looks for relevant websites and displays them in
a list for you 🤗
All research requires evaluation
● have to figure out which information is useful for your needs ☝🏾
● Whether you’re using the library or the internet for your research, you always
have to evaluate your search results in order to find the perfect source of
information for your needs ℹ️
Every browser has a search engine
● A browser is your access to the internet
🔐
● A search engine allows you to search
the internet once you have access.
● How exactly do you do a search? 🤗
● To perform a search, you need to find
the search engine in your web browser
🌐
● You can then type one or more
keywords which are known as “search
terms”, then you press ENTER 📲
How exactly do you do a search? 🤓
● Look at the headings, source, year of
publication, and subject terms ☝🏾
● After you run your search, you will see
all the relevant websites that match
your search terms 👥 These are known
as “search results”. You can then read
through the headlines and descriptions
and click on any of them to open a link
🔗
● As you conduct searches, you might
find that you get a lot of irrelevant
results 😕 The best way to solve this
problem is by refining your search 😌
Refine your search results
Use symbols or words to refine your search 💡
Here are a few examples of some easy ways to refine your search:
❌ If you want to exclude a word from your search you can type a hyphen (-) at the
beginning of the word.
🔍 If you want to narrow your search for exact words or phrases only, place
quotation marks (“”) around the search terms.
🔢 If you want to search for numbers within a range of numbers. Put two fullstops
(..) between the two numbers. For example, camera $50..$100.
Refine your search results
● Use content-specific searches to get your desired type of content 🤗🏾
● Sometimes when you carry out a search you are looking for a specific
type of content like images, news, videos or maps 🖼🤗📰📹🗺🤗
● Google, and most search engines, have links at the top of the page to
allow you to perform these specific searches.
● Take some time to practice how you search on Google 🤗
● Tip: Try typing in long sentences and then shorter ones. See for
yourself how the information differs to your requests. ☝🏾
Creating Opportunities Online
● Networking is one of the building
blocks of creating wealth 💸
● Since you have a good
understanding of your phone
now, let’s talk about one of the
most valuable ways you can use
it - networking! 🤗🏾
● Connecting with opportunity is
about connecting with the right
people - this is what we call
networking 👭
Be specific about who you connect with
● Networking happens naturally all the time,
good networking is about thinking critically
about why you want to connect with
someone 🤗
● If you think about it, you probably have
networking skills; when you meet
someone or make a new friend, you're
already networking 😃
● Making these connections can be very
valuable because so many opportunities
can come from knowing someone,
including information, ideas and
references 📚
Be specific about who you connect with
● Networks are normally built around a common point of
interest like a hobby, a school, a religion or a profession 🏫
● Professionals usually use networking to find out about job
opportunities or news and trends in their field 👔
● For professional connections, the best networking
opportunities used to happen at festivals, seminars,
conferences and other large events 🎟🤗
● Nowadays, we do much more of our networking online 📱
Be specific about who you connect with
● Online networking gives you
instant access to people,
businesses and resources
that you’re interested in 😎
● Networking comes in many
shapes and sizes 👯♂ One of
them is by connecting with
and creating content that
relates to your professional
field 👩💻
Be specific about who you connect with
● A blog is a written, personal opinion
on a specific topic that you can make
public online 🤗🏾
● Before you start writing your own
blog*✍️* Start by following or
subscribing to a blog that interests
you.
● Subscribing to blogs will save you
time because you don’t have to keep
checking if there have been any new
updates ⌛
● Not a fan of reading long blogs? 😵
Be specific about who you connect with
If blogs aren't your thing, social
media groups allow you to share and
create short pieces of content about
a topic that you’re interested in 😍
Many social media platforms give you
the ability to join or create private and
public groups for your communities
🗣 WhatsApp and Facebook are the
most popular platforms for creating
groups 💪🏾
YouTube ● Another great platform for connecting with
like-minded people is Youtube 🎬
● It’s also a great place to find people who are
interested in the same things 💃🏾
● YouTube creators and their audiences are a
powerful network because their content is free
to access, create and comment on 📹
YouTube is also a great space for
collaboration between creators, meaning that
they can create and share audiences together
🤗
● If you’re using another type of online
education, besides me, many online learning
platforms offer discussion forums so that you
and your peers can support each other
through learning 🤗
● If you’re going to be meeting new people,
you’ll need to make sure you make a good
impression 👩🎤 Yes, even online!
Your personal brand
● When you hear the word branding,
you might think about it as a
business term, but individuals also
have personal brands 👑
● A personal brand helps people
identify, relate to and remember
you easily 👀
● Your personal brand is your
reputation both off and online 🤗
● Your personal brand is built around
your unique story and how you
want people to understand you 🤗
Your personal brand
● Ask yourself what sets you apart
from the others? 👥
● Are you an expert in your field? 🤗
Are you one of the best at what you
do? Is there something about
working with you that makes you
stand out? 🤗
● Another way of approaching your
personal branding is by thinking
about who you’d like to connect
with 🤗 Investigate what they’re
interested in and base your
personal branding off of that 🕵🤗
Your personal brand
● What information comes up for you?
● Now think about what you’d like to
see come up 💪🏾
Your personal brand
● From email addresses, to CV’s and
your social media accounts, try to use
the same name and photo in your
communication at all times 📸
● Once you’ve got your online brand
sorted out, you can use your
networking skills to search for a job 👩
💻 There are a few different ways to do
that but let’s go over how to use social
media in your job hunt in the next topic.
● Good job on your learning progress!
Why not take a second to have a
breather, and then you can continue
when you are ready 🙂
Your personal brand
● Facebook, Instagram and even Tiktok
can help you network and build your
brand like a pro 😎
● When you’re looking for opportunities to
broaden your job search, social media
gives you the perfect opportunity to
control the brand you present to potential
employers. 🔎
● ✔️Here’s a rundown of what each social
media platform can be used for:
Your personal brand
● Be specific about how you use each platform
to build your personal brand ☝🏾
● LinkedIn is particularly important for job search
purposes, as the most popular professional
social media platform 😎
● LinkedIn is like an online CV, it will allow you
to add your previous employers, work
experience and education to your profile 📋
You can also apply for jobs directly on
LinkedIn ✅
● No matter where you apply for your potential
job, it’s important to remember that the public
information about you online can be seen by
anyone even if it is posted on your private
social media pages 🔒
Your personal brand
Take a look at how you are portraying yourself currently
👀 Are you communicating correctly with a potential
employer?
Luckily for you Bida, most social media platforms allow
you to control who sees your posts 👀
Changing your privacy settings will prevent you from
sharing photos and personal information with people you
are not friends with or people you do not follow ⚙️
Make sure that everything you post online is working for
you, not against you 🙃
Be sure to delete or hide any old posts or photos that
are questionable ❌ Even if your social media pages are
private, remember that anything on the internet can be
easily shared and spread 😯
Your personal brand
● Dedicate yourself to learning
more about what your digital
skills can do for your career and
you’ll be well on your way to
success 🤗
● Wow, well done on making it this
far!🎉
● I can’t wait to see how you use
what you’ve learned to create
amazing opportunities for
yourself 🤗

  • 2. Becoming A Digital Citizen The power is in your hands, literally 🤗 Our world is made up of lots of systems, laws and groupings that we’ve created over time 📅 Because humans are in the habit of constantly changing and evolving, we’ve now created a world that lives online in the digital space 🌐🌍 From payments, to shopping, to work, school and even relationships 🤗 - almost everything we do today can be done in the digital world. • 3. Becoming A Digital Citizen The digital world is open to all that know how to use it 😎 The best part is, you don’t even have to leave your couch to visit this world, because it’s all right here - in the palm of your hand. 🖐 As a digital citizen you can do the following things: ● Pay bills through online banking ● Shop through apps and online orders ● Learn new skills through online courses ● Search for information, ideas and inspiration ● Connect with friends and family through social media
  • 4. Becoming A Digital Citizen ● Your digital footprint can be easily traced and never removed. ● As we browse, interact with others, publish content and engage with online activities, we create a trail of data that’s like a footprint. 👣👣👣 ● Think carefully about what you’re sharing online 🤗🏾 ● Now that you know that your digital footprint follows you in all your online activity, take some time to think about how you’d change what you do online.💭
  • 5. Becoming A Digital Citizen ● Think carefully about how your actions might impact another 🤗 ● Even though our lives are divided between the real and the digital, both worlds can still affect each other and your digital footprint can leave a mark in your real life.🤗 ● This means that as a digital citizen, you need to act responsibly and for the good of those around you at all times. ● Being a responsible digital citizen means being aware of how your online activity impacts you and the people you know.🤗🏿🤗🤗🏿🤗🏾🤗🤗 🏼🤗🏼🤗🤗🏿🤗🤗🏽🤗🏼🤗🤗🏼🤗🏾🤗🤗🏾 ● It’s about thinking carefully about what you read, where you visit, what you share and how you communicate with others online.🤗 ● Be conscious of the effects of your digital footprint 🙏
  • 6. Becoming A Digital Citizen ● Now that you know what a digital citizen looks like 😏 let’s learn about what it takes to start living like one too. ● To do this, you’ll need to work on your digital literacy. 📖 ● Digital literacy is all about using digital tools to help you navigate the digital world with ease so that you can get ahead in life. ● Your mobile phone is just one of the many devices that can help you do that. 🤗
  • 7. Learn your A,B,C’s of digital literacy. ● Accessibility gives you the power to connect and search for the things you need. ● From internet searches to Facebook posts, having a world of information at your fingertips means you’re always close to an answer, making solutions more accessible to you than ever before. 💡📱 ● Protecting yourself and others is key to living online ☝🏾 ● Digital literacy helps keep your private information safe from online criminals*🔒* ● Knowing how to stay safe not only protects you but it provides a safer environment for all to enjoy online. 🛡🤗
  • 8. Learn your A,B,C’s of digital literacy. ● The more you connect, the more you grow 🌱 ● Digital Literacy is about learning how to communicate online in the best way possible so that you can keep growing the quality of your connections into future possibilities.🌱 ● Looking for a job? Digital Literacy will give you the edge 🌈 ● Most jobs these days expect you to have a good understanding of digital literacy. From writing emails to connecting on social media - these tools are all designed to help you create the world you want for yourself. 🌎 ● Your mobile phone has everything you need to start practicing your digital literacy right away.
  • 9. Let’s get to know the power of your mobile phone 💪 🏾 ● Smartphones and tablets are now just about as useful as laptops and computers. 🖥🤗 ● Most of them allow you to look up information in the same way computers and laptops do, and this saves you time and money*💰* ● Smart devices can operate almost as well as computers can 🤗🏾 ● Your phone can do amazing things 🤗 if you know where to look and what to do. ● You get to decide how you want your phone set up 😎 ● You have total control over how you want your phone to look and behave. ● You can manage this by using the Settings icon ⚙️ to control everything from the volume of your notifications to the way your lock screen works. This is also where you can tell how much storage space you're using💾
  • 10. Keep your device secure 🔐 A few things you should do to protect your device to help protect your information and keep your device safe and secure Bida 🔐 🤗🤗 Always update your device system update whenever requested. The device will let you know that it needs to be updated. ⚙️ Take time to understand the security settings on your device. 🤗 Be careful when downloading apps. Stick to apps you trust and carefully think about the permission required.
  • 11. Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥 ● Think of your phone as a car and the internet as a map 🚗 ● The internet is a digital highway made up of words, sounds, images and video that lead to any source of info you’re looking for 👀 ● You’re part of 3.6 billion people using the Internet right now! 😮
  • 12. Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥 In the same way a car won’t come to life without petrol, the internet needs data or a working connection. How you connect is simple 🤗 You can either: 🔨 Buy data from your network provider. 🔨Connect to Wi-Fi (a wireless internet connection) 🔨Use a modem (a small device which gives you internet access)
  • 13. Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥 ● Think of websites as small shops that make up the large shopping mall called the internet 🌍You can only access the internet through web browsers. ● Google Chrome, Safari, FireFox and Opera Mini. I suggest using Google Chrome 👆🏾 ● Next thing you need to know about the internet is something called a URL ☝🏾This is the address that you’ll see at the top of your browser tab and usually begins with www: ● Every website will have a unique URL.
  • 14. Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥 ● Emails let you write formal, direct messages to anyone, anywhere 😃 ● You’ve been in a post office, right? 📩 It’s a simple process: someone writes a letter, posts it to you and you either have it delivered to your home address or to a post box 📨 ● Before sending a mail, make sure you’re sending it to the right email address 😱 ● Also remember to check the spelling and make sure the person you’re sending your email to knows there’s an attachment (if you’ve added one) 🙌🏾
  • 15. Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥 ● There are over 3 billion active users on social media today 😮 ● Social media allows you to connect, share and chat with people from all over the world 🌍 ● From photography to politics, social media is like a media network or newspaper with people around the world sharing, reading and having conversations about all kinds of stories from real life 🗣 ● Growing an audience on social media requires hard work and consistent engagement with the platform 👩💻 ● Did you know that if you reach a certain following on Youtube, Youtube will start paying you for being there? 🤗
  • 16. Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥 ● Here are some social media sites you can start exploring today: ● Facebook: connect and share life experiences with friends. ● Instagram: share your daily story with the world. ● Twitter: engage with the latest news and conversation from the ground. ● TikTok: a fun place to make and share funny videos. ● LinkedIn: share everything there is to know about your professional life.
  • 17. Welcome to the highway of the world wide web 🔥 ● Whatever your interest, there’s an App for it! 😎 ● An App (or Application) is a service you can download onto your mobile phone for easier, quicker access to that service 🚀 For example, instead of visiting your bank via its website, you can download their App directly onto your phone and bank from there 👩💻 ● Apps will make your digital experience easier and more accessible 🤗 ● To get an App on your phone, visit Google Play store or App Store to download them. But remember, never download an app from a dodgy site, or from somewhere that expects you to give over your banking details. Safety first, always! 🔓 ● Now that you’re fully equipped with five awesome digital tools, I can’t wait to see you make them work for you. Let’s go! 👊🏾
  • 18. Online Safety ● Make sure that every click you make is safe👮🏾 ● The internet is full of opportunity, but it can also be full of crime if you're not careful 😕 Learning how to stay safe online is a key characteristic of your digital citizenship. Let's get into it 👊🏾 ● Cybercriminals are really smart, and they're after any kind of private information you can give them ☠️ From banking details to passwords and even your identity, cybercriminals will try every trick in the book to get it 👀 ● Do you know of the ways cybercriminals can steal your data 👀 ● Your online safety begins with knowing how to manage your privacy settings.
  • 19. App Permissions ● Limit what apps can access 🎛 ● Your privacy is a huge part of your online safety 🙇🏾 You have the power to decide what info an app is and isn't allowed to access on your phone 📱 ● Never give permission to an app that wants access to your banking or email accounts ❌ ● It's time to head to the App Store or Play Store now and work on your app permissions while you take a breather 😎 ● Now that you know how to give apps certain permissions, it's time to learn how to keep that info safe ✍️
  • 20. Never use simple passwords like 12345 ● Having a simple password is like locking your door with string 🔗 Not wise at all. ● Your password should be hard for someone to guess but easy for you to remember 💻 ● Strong passwords have a mix of letters, special characters, and numbers ● A strong password makes it harder for people to access your info 💪🏾 ● Take a moment to consider what passwords you've made for your accounts. How easy would it be for a cyber criminals to guess them 🤗
  • 21. Here's a checklist of how to create stronger passwords for your accounts 📝 Never use personal names or info in your password, and most importantly - never share this password with anyone, not even your pet 😸 A strong password should have: 1. At least one number 2. At least one symbol 3. At least one lowercase and one uppercase letter. 4. At least seven characters
  • 22. Free Wi-Fi isn’t safe Wi-Fi Your information is always at risk when you use a public Wi-Fi connection 👆🏾 When using public Wi-Fi, a third party could snoop on your emails, passwords or other sensitive info 😟 But there are ways you can keep safe 📶 If it's not a work or personal connection, it's better to be safe than sorry 🤗 It's simple enough isn't it? Why not look through some of the networks you've connected to before, which one's would you consider unsafe? 📵 Treat all Wi-Fi links with suspicion. If it's not a work or personal connection, it's better to be safe than sorry 🤗 It's simple enough isn't it? Why not look through some of the networks you've connected to before, which one's would you consider unsafe? 📵
  • 23. Smishing is a scam sent via SMS Smishing is another popular scam that happens over SMS 🤗🏾 A smishing SMS will send you dangerous, fake links via SMS 😯 They steal through those fake links Another popular smishing scam involves you having won A LOT of money. Sound familiar 🤗 Unfortunately, if something seems too good to be true - it is 🤗
  • 24. Vishing is a phone call from a scam artist Have you ever received a phone call from a stranger asking for personal information about you? This is called a Vishing scam 📞 We call cyber criminals scam artists because they are good at pretending to be professionals that you might trust 🤗 Your bank would never ask for your One Time Pin or passwords ☝🏾 If you get an unexpected message with a One Time Pin, contact your network. Someone may be trying to steal your info 📵
  • 25. Social media scams And what about Social Media? Scam artists love to prey on your emotional connection with people to try trick you into stealing money 💸 This happens when they steal the identity of a friend and then pretend to be them 👥 This is how: Never give money to a friend without phoning them directly to confirm it was them 💯 Every day there are new and creative scams being created. It's up to you, Bida to stay vigilant and suspicious of all activity you encounter online 👩💻 Remember. NEVER EVER share your personal information with anyone over the phone, via sms or email 🙅♂❌
  • 26. How to make good decisions online ● As a digital citizen, you’ll soon be spending a lot of time on the internet exploring all kinds of news, opinions and stories 🤗 ● To stay focused and aware of the content you’re creating and consuming, you need to be able to think critically about it🤗 ● Critically thinking cuts through the noise online. ● You need to be able to think clearly about all the information you find online 👀 ● Without critical thinking skills, you can be easily manipulated, deceived, or led to conclusions that others want you to have 😧 ● You need strong critical thinking skills so that you can maintain your own beliefs and reach your own conclusions 🙂 ● But how do you do that? 🤗
  • 27. Question everything! Critical thinking gives you better judgement as it allows you to view information from an objective point of view ⚖️ When you think critically you don’t take anything you read at face value 📚 This means you don’t just absorb and accept everything you read, you instead approach content with questions and curiosity 🙋 Critical thinking is about learning how to think for yourself. It involves learning how to: 🔎 Analyse and evaluate information and arguments ⛓️ See patterns and connections 📝 Identify and build meaningful information.
  • 28. Critical thinking Anyone can become a critical thinker; all you need to do is learn how to ask the right questions and find solutions before jumping to conclusions when faced with a problem 💭 Let’s look at examples of how we can use critical thinking to analyse information online 🤗 Blog posts are a good place to start practicing your critical thinking ☝🏾 To think critically, ask yourself questions:
  • 29. Apply these questions to everything you read and see online 🤓 After analysing all of this information, what do you think about the blog post? 1. Who wrote it? 2. Who is it aimed at? 3. Who would know more about it? 4. Where does this information come from? 5. Who are the sources? 6. Who might be funding this?
  • 30. Weigh up your options when you are making a decision Try gather all the information you can about a subject before making a decision about it 🙌🏾 Let’s say, for example, you want to buy a new phone but you’re not sure which one to get. You need to look at your options critically. This is how: 📱 Consider all the features of the phone. 🤗 Compare the quality of those features to other phones in the market within the same price range 👍👎 What are the pro’s and con’s of your phone? 📖 Read customers reviews of your phone
  • 31. Weigh up your options when you are making a decision ● As you test your decision-making skills, you may also need to consider how other people are affected by these decisions*🤗* ● The best way to do this is with respect and boundaries🙅
  • 32. Fake News is damaging to society ● We’ve all seen some headlines that seem just too crazy to be true, right? 📰 ● Unfortunately, those headlines are usually all fake and are designed to grab your attention, mislead you and even damage reputations 🤗 ● As a digital citizen, it’s up to you to become vigilant about what news you choose to consume as the truth ☝🏾 Let me show you how to spot the fake in your feed 🕵🤗 ● Never share information that seems fake ☝🏾 ● So how do you spot something that’s fake? Here are some tell-tale signs 🛑
  • 33. Fake news has a fake author There are no credible sources to fake news articles 🤗 The source is the person or publication that captured an image or has information about the actual news event 🙋♂ By verifying information and checking if it is true before publishing it or sending it to anyone else, you can prevent misinformation and the spread of fake news ✋🏾 Fake news articles will try trick you into reading the article by writing sensational headlines that are sometimes too crazy to be true 😳 Fake news articles catch you out by presenting exaggerated facts and headlines 🤗 Look at this example of a fake news headline designed to shock you into reading it 😲
  • 34. Fake news will try to shock you ● What’s your immediate reaction to this headline? ● If you can sense a strong emotional reaction to a headline, it's a sign that it could be fake ❌ ● The problem here is that if people react strongly to something they will want to share it quickly, which can lead to fake news spreading or even "going viral"📈
  • 35. If you’re still unsure of whether or not it’s fake news, here’s some more questions you can use to get to the bottom of it 👊🏾 Learning to identify true and reliable information is a basic skill part of digital literacy 🤗 Lastly, you need to analyse evidence closely 👀 A trustworthy news story will usually include plenty of evidence in the form of quotes from experts, survey data, official statistics, images or detailed eye-witness accounts from people on the scene 🗄🤗 If a story has these, you probably don't have much to worry about 😇 Speaking of Google, it’s a great tool for fact-checking and for research.
  • 36. Search engines deliver information quickly ● When it comes to looking for information on the internet, search engines are your most useful tool 🛠🤗 ● Let’s spend some time getting to know the ins and outs of this feature and how it can help you get to what you’re looking for 👀 ● You don’t need to find information manually, search engines perform searches at high speeds 🚀 ● A search engine is a website where you can search through internet content by entering a search term into the search field 🔍 ● The search engine then looks for relevant websites and displays them in a list for you 🤗
  • 37. All research requires evaluation ● have to figure out which information is useful for your needs ☝🏾 ● Whether you’re using the library or the internet for your research, you always have to evaluate your search results in order to find the perfect source of information for your needs ℹ️
  • 38. Every browser has a search engine ● A browser is your access to the internet 🔐 ● A search engine allows you to search the internet once you have access. ● How exactly do you do a search? 🤗 ● To perform a search, you need to find the search engine in your web browser 🌐 ● You can then type one or more keywords which are known as “search terms”, then you press ENTER 📲
  • 39. How exactly do you do a search? 🤓 ● Look at the headings, source, year of publication, and subject terms ☝🏾 ● After you run your search, you will see all the relevant websites that match your search terms 👥 These are known as “search results”. You can then read through the headlines and descriptions and click on any of them to open a link 🔗 ● As you conduct searches, you might find that you get a lot of irrelevant results 😕 The best way to solve this problem is by refining your search 😌
  • 40. Refine your search results Use symbols or words to refine your search 💡 Here are a few examples of some easy ways to refine your search: ❌ If you want to exclude a word from your search you can type a hyphen (-) at the beginning of the word. 🔍 If you want to narrow your search for exact words or phrases only, place quotation marks (“”) around the search terms. 🔢 If you want to search for numbers within a range of numbers.
