Guaymas was founded in 1539 when Spanish conquistadors arrived and named the bay. The first settlers were the Guaimas people who lived by fishing. In 1854, there was a battle in Guaymas where French soldiers attacked the Mexican army but were defeated. Guaymas was granted city status in 1859 and saw economic and population growth through immigration in the late 1800s. It offers tourism attractions today like beaches, golfing, fishing and dolphin shows.
