The document summarizes Emma Zayas' travels to several countries. In China, she visited the Great Wall and learned about its history and construction. She also saw the Yu Yuan Gardens and spent time in Yangshuo. In Australia, some of her stops included Tasmania, Uluru, and Fraser Island. In Brazil, she saw Christ the Redeemer statue and visited Ouro Preto and Fernando de Noronha. For her last trip, she went to several places in Africa like Cape Town, Table Mountain, and Zanzibar and learned more about the history and places she studied in class.
2. Welcome to China!
Hello from China!
I have had an amazing stay in China! All the way from the well known Great Wall of China to
Yangshuo, China was been wonderful. Since I did China for Y1K, I know a lot about it! I started
my trip at the Great Wall, and travelled a whole 2 miles before stopping! Not only did I get to
enjoy the view, but I learned a lot about the history of the Great Wall. It was mostly built
during the Ming Dynasty, but it didn't become a whole wall before the Qin Dynasty. It started
out as multiple walls but were then connected to fend of the invasions from the Huns. Since
then, it has served as a national monument in China. Next I went to the Yu Yuan Gardens, and
they sure are beautiful. Originally, Yuyuan garden was built in 1559 by Pan Yunduan, a local
governor of Sichuan province in Ming Dynasty, to serve his father who was Pan En, a famous
minister during the reign of Emperor Jiajing in Ming Dynasty. My last stop was Yangshuo.
Yangshuo was founded in 265. That sure was a long time ago! First I went to the Yulong
river, and went rafting (I almost fell out). Next I went to the Butterfly Spring Park. The
butterflies are from all around the world, and they sure were pretty! I had a marvelous time in
China, and I sure hope to go back again! Next time, I’ll probably stop by the Terracotta
Warriors, they sure seem cool!

4. Welcome to Australia!
Hello from Australia!
You will not believe the sights I’ve seen here in Australia! I started out in Tasmania, and boy
was that fun! The story of Tasmania’s native people since European settlement is a disastrous
one. Isolated because the land bridge to Victoria drowned beneath rising sea levels 10, 000
years ago, the island’s Aborigines developed a distinct, sustainable, seasonal culture of
hunting, fishing and gathering. During my stay there I stopped at Port Arthur, Mount
Wellington, and Flinders Island. Next I saw the amazing Uluru. It is normally referred to as
Ayer’s Rock. The rock is actually grey but is covered with a distinctive red iron oxide coating
that makes it look red. No one is sure when the first people moved there, but it is suggested
that it was about 10,000 years ago. There is so much more to talk about, but how about I talk
about my favorite part, Fraser Island. Man is it a beauty! The Butchulla people are the natives.
I decided to come to Australia because we hadn’t studied much of it at all in World History.
Now I know a whole lot more! I had so much fun on my trip!

6. Welcome to Brazil!
Brazil was so much fun! My first stop was Christ the Redeemer, which was pretty awesome.
The statue of Christ the Redeemer stands at the peak of the Corcovado Mountain. Corcovado
Mountain is located in the Carioca Mountain Range which lies in the southeast area of Brazil.
The start of the statue of Christ the Redeemer began in the 1850's because of Pedro Maria
Boss. Father Boss, with all of the local Catholics, wanted a monument placed upon the
mountain to watch over the city of Rio de Janeiro. The Christ the Redeemer statue was chosen
and was placed at the peak of the Corcovado Mountain. Next I went to Ouro Preto. Ouro Preto
is a historic town. We haven’t really learned about it in World History, so I thought it would be
an interesting stop. It was founded at the end of the 17th century. Ouro Preto actually means
black gold. How interesting! This is because it was a central point during the gold rush. It was
the old capital of Minas Gerais. My last stop was in Fernando de Noronha. This stop wasn’t
very educational, more for fun. But I did find out some history about it! Its actual discovery
was in 1503. This is 3 years after the mainland of Brazil was founded. Did I mention that
Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago? I had an amazing time on my trip and I hope to return
someday!

8. Welcome to Africa!
Africa was my last stop, and I had so much fun! I chose Africa because we studied it a whole
lot this year. We studied all throughout history, and I wanted to get a good look at what
modern Africa looks like. I started out at Cape town. It is also known as the Mother City, partly
because it is the largest town in the Western Cape Province. It was founded as a resupply stop
for the Dutch East India Company. Today, Cape Town is the legislative capital of South
Africa, and a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, vineyards and majestic
landscapes. It sure is a beautiful place! Next I went to Table Mountain. Table Mountain stands
1113 meters high. In May 1503 the Portuguese navigator Antonio de Saldanha anchored his
fleet in Table Bay and named it the watering place of Saldanha. He also climbed Table
Mountain, which he named Table of the Cape. Lastly I stopped at Zanzibar, Tanzania. For a long
time, coastal settlements had made trade links with the counties to the north. Zanzibar was
one of them. I learned so much in Africa! See you soon!
