Every Bite Counts! Nutrition Tips for Breast and Ovarian Cancerbkling
The dietitians of God's Love We Deliver cover a range of cancer fighting nutrition tips such as how plant–based foods fight cancer, superfoods to prioritize in your diet, how healthy fats can help support your health, and how nutrition plays a role in protecting your bones during treatment.
Superfood is a widely used catch-all phrase, common on the internet and in the marketing of exotic (and normally expensive) fruits and vegetables. Superfood is an over-used and over-hyped marketing tool, rather than a useful guide for consumers in choosing what foods to eat.
Vegans eat no meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or dairy products. While there is a considerable advantage to a lacto-ovo vegetarian pattern, vegan diets are the most healthful of all, reducing risk of a broad range of health concerns.
Adequate diet:
A mixture of food stuffs selected to satisfy the nutritional requirements of the body in quality and quantity. It should be safe and of good taste and smell. It should be suitable for weather age, effort and physiological status of every one.
5 reasons why you should start eating plant based foods today UttarPra
As our society evolves, we are constantly facing the need to change our behaviors and habits to increase our health and quality of life. We are now facing climate change, food insecurity and over 40% of our population is suffering from chronic disease.
One of the recent ideas put forward to improve our world and health is the plant-based nutrition. Even though food regiments are not something our doctor prescribes (yet), research is showing that food has a lot to contribute to our health. It is also a less costly option to our society than prescribe medication.
Our understanding of plant-based eating may differ from one individual to another. In the world of nutrition, plant- based eating is having a large portion of one’s nutrition coming from vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, whole grains and also include legumes or other plants.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!
Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

3. Agenda
• Review position statements of national medical organizations
• How to talk to your doctor about nutrition and a vegan diet
• Breastmilk, formula and milk
• Assembling healthy meals at every stage
• Important nutrients
• Questions/discussion
4. Position statements of organizations
• Physicians go by guidelines and position statements
• There is limited time in a schedule, and physicians rely on experts
• Guidelines simplify the tomes of medical literature into easy evidence-based
snippets
5. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that
appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are
healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in
the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are
appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy,
lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood and
for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable
than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural
resources and are associated with much less environmental damage.
8. American Academy of Pediatrics
Some people believe that patients following vegan or vegetarian diets suffer
from nutritional deficiencies. Although there have been case reports of children
failing to thrive or developing cobalamin deficiency on vegan diets, these are
rare exceptions. Multiple experts have concluded independently that vegan
diets can be followed safely by infants and children without compromise of
nutrition or growth and with some notable health benefits.

PIR May 2004, 25 (5) 174-176; DOI: https://doi.org/10.1542/pir.25-5-174
9. How to talk to your doctor
• Physicians are caring, and helping and often have the right intent, but
misguided by outdated information. Point them the right way! And to
resources
• Let them know that veganism is important in your family, much as religious
dietary preferences are honored. They would not force someone with
religious prohibitions to eat that food, would they?
• Physicians are detailed by pharmaceutical and formula companies, even dairy
and meat industry. However, vegans never “detail” physicians.
10. Liquid nutrition
• Often, children have limited stomachs and eat on the “go”
• Sometimes with a fiber rich diet, they get full too fast
• Liquid nutrition offers a rich source of calories to supplement the food
• In the past, dairy was considered an integral part of nutrition for children
• Today, we have many protein and calorie rich alternatives
• Breastmilk is best, as long as can be continued
• We should compare other “milks” to breastmilk and not cow’s milk
11. Breastmilk composition
Per 1 cup:
Calories 171
Protein 2.5g
Fat 10g
Carbohydrate 17g
Benefits: Immune health, digestive system, probiotics, cognitive development, dental health,
maternal-child bond, reduced cancer in mothers, and MANY others. Breastmilk is also a means of
communication between mother/child
Milk sharing, milk banks may be alternatives if mother isn’t able. Lactation Consultants may help in
difficult situations, sometimes with aid of herbals. La Leche is a resource.
Preemies: Prolacta Bioscience offers a human milk formula for preemies which is high nutrition
12. Formula (soy)
• Use for over 50 years
• Recent review “in normal full-term infants – even during the most rapid phase of
growth – SIF produces normal anthropometric growth, adequate protein status,
bone mineralization and normal immune development”
• Contains lanolin from sheep’s wool, only vegan ones are from Europe (Premiriz
and Baby Mandorle)

15. Assembling healthy meals
• Resources: PCRM, Plantbasedpediatrician.com, and plantrician.org
• Infants
• Toddlers
• Children
• Teens
16. Infants
• Infants: breastmilk/soy formula exclusively (6 months)
• After 6 months – fortified cereals and foods
• consider BLW or baby-led weaning – lots of work but pays off in the end
• 6-8 months: veggies, including potatoes, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, green
beans; fruits – apples, banana, peaches, avocado
• 8 months: tofu, legumes, dry cereals, nut butters (depends on development)
• No eggs? No problem. No cheese? No problem. No meat? No problem.
• Remember, the breastmilk/formula is the primary source of nutrition.
17. Toddlers
• Often todders are busy people, on the go, and get full easily
• Focus on calorie rich foods such as avocado, nut butters, legumes, and most definitely full-
fat tofu and soy products (if tolerated)
• Protein rich foods such as legumes (hummus) are helpful, finger foods are perfect
• Encourage self-feeding and give choices
• REMEMBER, keep the foods separate!
• Limit the nuggets, fries, but try to make them yourself if possible (baked fries)
• Nutritional yeast is a great source of b12
• Seaweed can give iodine – try some vegan sushi with your toddler.
18. Children
Focus on those calorie rich healthy foods, such as whole grains, legumes, nut
butters, avocado as a good base.
Breakfast ideas: pancakes made with flaxseeds and soymilk; oats made with
soymilk, flax and berreies
School lunch: consider sending a packaged individual soymilk along, with a
whole grain sandwich or veggie burger, side of veggies and fruits
Dinners: Eat as a family and give some choices, for picky eaters, puree veggies
into spaghetti sauce, make tofu curries with rice, mac & cheese can be veggie
based. Get children involved in the cooking/prep process!
19. Teens
• Develop and refine their food choices.
• Adjust calorie intake for activity level
• Try ethnic meals
• Batch Cooking / food prep once a week
• Smoothies for teens “on the go”
• Focus on fiber, protein, and calorie rich choices
• Soy is best for plant-based milks.
• Acne – some teens are sensitive to higher fat and processed foods
22. • Phytonutrients are compounds only in
plants that promote health
• There is no daily reference intake for
phytochemicals
• New research shows they may very well
be essential to life, and for prevention
of cardiovascular diseases and cancer
• ONLY about 1/5 of Americans meet
the minimum intake
PhytoNUTRIENTS
23. Bright colors,
excellent health
Plant foods naturally contain
antioxidants, phytonutrients,
and fiber which can reduce
inflammation, scavenge free
radicals, optimize immune
function and angiogenesis,
improve overall wellness
24. Nutrients of concern
• Choline - memory, mood, muscle control, and other brain and nervous system
functions; found in soy, mushrooms, veggies, potatoes, legumes
• Calcium – found in greens, legumes, and fortified plant-based milks
• Vitamin D – from sunlight, should be supplemented as per age. Found in
fortified plant based milks
• B12 – supplement (found in plant-based milks and nutritional yeast)
• DHA – precursor is ALA found in soy, avocado, nuts/seeds; FLAX
• Iron – legumes, nuts/seeds, leafy greens, fruits, whole grains
better absorbed with vitamin C
• Protein – veggies, legumes, whole grains (need adequate calories)
