Up the Ratios Bylaws - a Comprehensive Process of Our Organizationuptheratios
Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications.
Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators.
Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. These lectures provide valuable insights into potential career paths and inspire students to pursue their passions in STEM.
Up the Ratios relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. Contributions of time, expertise, and financial support are crucial to sustaining our programs and expanding our reach. Whether you're an individual passionate about education, a professional in the STEM field, or a company looking to give back to the community, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
We are proud of the positive impact we've had on the lives of countless students, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. By providing these young minds with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, we are not only changing their futures but also contributing to the advancement of technology and innovation on a broader scale.

2. Lisette’s Home December 2020
Lisette’s Home February 1, 2021
Lisette’s home was
completed in February
and presented to her,
her husband and son
on February 18, 2021.
3. Glenys and her boys have been living in really rough
conditions and things have been complicated by Covid-
19 and unemployment. Their beautiful home was
finished during the third week of February 2021.
4. Work began on
renovations of the
home of Alise and
Raul, two of our
dedicated
volunteers. This
project was
donated as a
surprise to them.
As February ends,
all of the parging
has been
completed and
finishing work
continues.
5. We hit a snag with Yrna’s
home in Imbert. When
our crew started digging
the foundation, they
discovered it was all
sand. It’s a wonder the
house was still standing.
We had to hire machinery
to come and take down
the big hill the original
home was built on so that
the foundation could be
dug into the soil. March
will be the month for this
house to progress.
6. February 4th marked the
demolition of the
Rodriguez home. By
month end, the new
home has progressed
rapidly and the roof will
soon be added! Thank
you so much to the
Fackrell family for raising
the funds for this home!!
7. In February,
we were able
to complete a
bathroom for
Joselyn who
lives in San
Rafael de
Yuma. We
hope to help
more in the
future.
8. The second story of our Starfish
Center in Javillar has progressed
rapidly. We thank our dedicated
crew and our donors who have
helped make this happen! The funds
were raised from our annual auction
and matched by doTerra Healing
Hands Foundation. We also had a
donation from Gay Lee Foundation.
9. In Javillar, dance
classes are being
taught at our Starfish
Center by Hope
Roach from Canada
who is volunteering
for six months in the
Dominican.
Hope, Ashdon and
Sam Fackrell are also
teaching English
classes at our center,
while Stirling Fackrell
is volunteering at
the construction site
of the Rodriquez
family.
10. In Baraguana, English classes are being
held at the home of our volunteer, Clarens
Descorias. These courses are sponsored by
Tonya Greiner of the USA.
Vocational classes have also
begun teaching women how to
do manicures and pedicures to
create income for members of
the community.
11. In Imbert, Jular has been able to set up a
beauty shop in her home thanks to her
Canadian sponsors, Patrick and Tekarra Roach
and family. For an entire year that family has
had no income because of Covid-19.
12. In Javillar, the Fackrell family and
Hope Roach have been cleaning the
playground area and painting the
fence. We are extremely grateful to
the Fackrell family who are raising
funds so that we will finally have
playground equipment this coming
June!
13. Anton and Christina Welke from
Minnesota have chosen to sponsor
families in the impoverished area in
the community of Los Polomos. They
are providing food on a monthly basis
for 12 families and will be raising funds
to build several homes. They will be
working with us to provide these
services.
14. We continue to deliver food
to hungry people in many
communities including,
Javillar, San Marcos, Imbert,
Llanos de Perez, San Rafael de
Yuma, Baraguana, Loma
Blanca, Los Polomos, Playa
Oeste and more.
15. Early in February we met Glenys. She has 2 children, has been
living in an abusive situation and was being evicted because she
couldn’t pay the rent. The situation was extreme and urgent. On
Valentine’s Day we posted a fundraiser and thanks to generous
donors were able in just 2 days to raise enough to build her a small
home. The excavation starting the very next day. Great progress
has already been made in less than two weeks.
16. Another family we met from Javillar is Angelina, her husband and son.
The home they are living in is being sold and they have no place to go.
They have been working little by little to build a home but because of
Covid and unemployment, they have been unable to complete it. We
are raising funds to help them be able to move in. They are willing to
live with dirt floor and metal over the windows if they just have a roof
over their heads.
The Fackrell family are also spearheading the
funding for this project. We are so grateful to them.
17. Alise and Raul, our volunteers from
Llanos de Perez discovered these
two sisters and their 5 children
living in very desperate conditions.
Marlenis and Angelina Cruz live in
a home covered in mold. The walls
have huge holes making them
open to frequent rain.
We have started a fundraiser to
build them a home. Our goal is to
have them move in on May 15, the
50th anniversary of our executive
director, Louise ZoBell and her
husband, Jack. They are
spearheading the funding for this
family to celebrate their
anniversary. .
18. We helped this family put a roof
on their home.
We also helped another family
replace the roof of their home.
We didn’t receive pictures of that
one.
19. From Joan Perozo in San Rafael de Yuma,
we learned of the heart-breaking
conditions of this senior man, Ramon. He
has been sleeping on cardboard on his dirt
floor. He had no food in his home and is ill.
Wanting to at least help in some way, we
sent money for food and a bed.
20. Ramon was so extremely grateful for the bed. When Joan called
Louise, Ramon got down on his knees on the dirt floor to express his
thanks to God and to us for this blessing.
Upon learning of
this terrible
situation from our
posts, Chad and
Tonya Greiner
have chosen to
sponsor Ramon
and raise funds for
him to have a little
home. It will be
our first outside of
the province of
Puerto Plata.
21. February 2021, was another wonderful month for
Dominican Starfish Foundation and our recipients!
