Home Building Projects
2022
We would like to give a huge thanks to Shaina and Sanny Sala and their family for furnishing
and beautifying our Starfish Center. The Salas own an operate a large furniture store
(ShowHome Furniture) in Calgary, Alberta. Their daughters, Maria and Lease, did the interior
design. It is so beautiful!!
The second level of our Center is being rented out to people who are coming to do
humanitarian work through the foundation. All the proceeds stay in the community to
employ people and for operational costs of the center.
During 2022 this space was rented
out several times to guests coming
to do humanitarian service.
We certainly feel very blessed to
have this amazing family
supporting our foundation.
A DREAM COME TRUE!!
What an awesome experience! There was standing room only
at the grand opening of our new playground in Javillar on
February 14, 2022. It is just beautiful!! THANKS TO
EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!
This has been in the works for 4 years and has been a dream
of our Dominican director, Amarilis, for over 30 years!!
Included here are photos of the 16 homes built by
Dominican Starfish Foundation in 2022.
In addition to these homes:
• We helped 10 families to remodel or finish the homes
that they had started.
• We helped 1 family save their home from foreclosure.
• We purchased 1 home for a family.
• At the end of 2022 we are building 3 homes.
• We have 6 homes fully funded to be built in 2023.
• We are raising funds for an additional 4 homes.
This makes a total of 41 homes in 2022.
We were able to surprise Ana and
her family with a new home. She
had no idea that this blessing was
coming to her when she
volunteered to help us clean it for
the new owner. Thanks to Wade
and Kim Payne for changing lives.
Ana and Family
The Pimenter Family received their beautiful new
home on May 26. This was built by Fernando,
Miguel and crew. We are grateful to all who donated
to make this possible!
Pimenter Family
Lula and her family received their new home
on May 27. Thanks to Amarilis, Segundo
and our Javillar crew for the construction.
Thank you to Ruby Best and her family for
donating the funds for this home!
On June 21, 2021, we announced to David and Sheyla that they would be getting a new home.
Funds were raised for Amarilis’s birthday. Sheyla is her daughter and helps so much with the
foundation. Due to unforeseen zoning and government regulations, the home cost much more
than expected and the family had to borrow funds to complete the construction. David and
Sheyla moved in exactly one year later June 21, 2022. We are so happy for them.
The home for Fernando and Vickyana and
family is complete! Thanks to our Home-
Building-Committee and others who donated
funds to surprise the family with a new
home. Fernando is one of our construction
managers and does a wonderful job helping
others!! We are so grateful for his skills and
dedication!!
We completed the construction of the home
for Jordy, Maria and family. Thanks to many,
many donors. They are extremely grateful!!
Raidely is 12 years old and helps
with so many community things.
She is training to be the future
director of the foundation. Her
mom, Jhohaira, also helps with
many foundation projects. They
were living in a rented place.
We started raising money in
June for this family for
Amarilis’s birthday.
Construction started at the
end of June and was
completed in August. It is
beautiful and they are so
grateful. Thanks to all our
donors!!
Raidely & Jhohaira
Renault does parging for a
living. The family did
some upgrades to the
home and chose to move
in before it was
completed. They moved
in just before Hurricane
Fiona so that they would
be safe and dry. They will
be finishing their own
home.
Construction was completed on Dominga’s home. We
were able to attend a beautiful opening ceremony on
September 29. This included all of the workers who
helped with the home. We appreciate all their efforts.
Dominga and her family are so very grateful for this life-
changing gift.
Angelica’s home is complete!!
On October 8, a group from Las
Vegas, NV; Maryland, and
Okotoks, Alberta painted the
home! The money for the paint
was raised by 11-year-old
Sophie Palmer from Maryland.
Angelica is thrilled!!
Angelica
Elias's health problems began
13 years ago in 2009. One
day he got up and couldn't
walk. He went to the doctor.
They found some herniated
discs in his back. A very
unsuccessful surgery followed
leaving him unable to walk.
Elias then lost his job and
could no longer support his
family. Neighbors and friends
have been helping. These
same neighbors and friends
pleaded with Dominican
Starfish Foundation to help
him.
Their new home was
completed November 3.
Funds for this home were donated by Save the World
Foundation directed by Tamara Fackrell.
The Polanco family lived in impoverished conditions but give
freely what they can to help in the community.
The Dominican Starfish team of workers built the home.
Adonis works at the Lifestyle Resort as
a security guard. He makes less than
$200 a month. They have a little girl
and just had a new baby girl
November 5. They live in a very
difficult situation. They are so poor.
His wife lived with her mother, and he
lived with his mother because neither
place had room for both of them.
The house is in a very
tight spot, but it is all
the land that they
own.
Construction started
November 5. The home
was finished on
December 10.
Jomira and her husband have been
working to built their own home for
several years for themselves and their
3 children. They are so grateful for the
help that they were given by Wade
Payne and Dominican Starfish
Foundation to finish this project!
We had a food drive for World Hunger Day, May 28
and Dominican Mother’s Day, May 29. Our
volunteers delivered food in 3 different communities.
We have 25 families sponsored who receive food each month. These
families are in San Rafael de Yuma, Llanos de Perez, Imbert, Javillar,
Maggiolo and more. Thanks to our donors for blessing lives!
Sharing Food Packs in Padre Granero. Thank you to volunteers from Pal Humanitarian.
Thank you so much to Dan and
Denise Ashworth and family
for donating and delivering
food packs to 70 families in
San Rafael de Yuma (near
Punta Cana).
We raised money for food
for the hurricane victims of
Higuey, Dominican
Republic. Approximately
80 families have received
help.
Hurricane Fiona
devastation
Visiting guests from Las Vegas, NV; Maryland, and Heritage Pointe,
Alberta delivered 80 food packs at La Chocolatera.
Thanks to Tracey Messick and her friends and family from Maryland for
taking time out of their vacation to deliver food packs in the community
of Javillar. Their donation of food and time is so appreciated!
Volunteers from the community of Javillar
cleaned and organized our distribution
center after we arrived with 35-- 50 lb. bags
of humanitarian supplies. (Another 30 bags
arrived later in the month as well.)
On December 23, Steve Olsen and family took time from their
Christmas vacation to buy and deliver food packs in the community of
Higuey which is near Punta Cana. Thank you!
Clothing and shoes have been delivered in
different communities in Puerto Plata.
Baby packs are always a big hit for expectant mothers
in many different communities in Puerto Plata.
The Palmer family from Canada
and United States delivered 250
Days for Girls kits in communities
in and around Puerto Plata. They
also brought cute hair accessories
made by volunteers from home.
We had a wonderful group from Utah who
came to do humanitarian chiropractic
adjustments and doTerra Symphony of the
Cells massage in two different communities.
They visited in March and again in June.
Hundreds of people received hands-on care
from this group of 15. They also brought six
hundred 72 Hour Kits that were donated by
doTerra and distributed in the communities.
Care was given in the communities of
Javillar and Baraguana.
1. Pedio has a monthly sponsor who pays for his diabetes medicine.
2. Baby Mya was able to have her hernia surgery from donations.
3. This new wee one was born with hydrocephalies. We helped
with surgery and medication
Health and Wellness
In February we were able to raise
funds to help little Liam (4) who was
recently diagnosed with Leukemia.
We heard that Jesus, another worker at our resort, was in desperate need of help. His mother
has been going downhill very fast with the ravages of Parkinson’s disease. The family wasn’t
been able to provide adequately for medications, food and health care.
We were able to raise funds mostly from members of the resort to assist Jesus so he could
help his mother. He has already seen major improvements in her quality of life.
In April we were able to provide
funds to help with medical care for
two young men who were in a
serious accident during the Easter
week. They have a long road to
recovery ahead.
As part of our mandate, we continued to assist those in
need of medical assistance. In October we were able to
help Bibi who had a badly broken leg. He is a former
worker of the foundation.
In November, we raised funds and were able help the Miese
family pay medical expenses to provide treatment for their 3-
year-old who was burned. Thanks to all the generous donors
who helped with this.
Children who are hungry
have a much harder time
learning.
We are thrilled that Sheila
Layton from Heritage
Pointe, Alberta, who is on
our board and her sister
Kathy Jones from Las
Vegas who is on the Pal
Humanitarian board,
raised over $3500 toward
the lunch program at the
Youth Upliftment School.
They were able to
participate in shopping
for the items.
Youth Upliftment School
We made frequent visits
to the school taking
guests and delivering
school supplies.
We were able to purchase the
appliances and other items needed for
the kitchen in the school through
donations made to us by the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Now many very hungry children
having a hot lunch every day!
The kitchen was ready for the new school year
at the Youth Upliftment School. Thanks to LDS
Charities for donating the small and large
appliances and other kitchen items. Thanks to
Fernando and Miguel and team for
renovations. Thanks to Sheila Layton and Kathy
Jones and others for food supplies.
The school is now providing lunch for the
children, most of whom have very little to eat
at home.
Additional improvements have been made
since these pictures were taken.
An amazing group of
young women from
Las Vegas, Nevada
donated school
supplies and packed
700 pounds of school
kits for the children in
the Youth Upliftment
School!
A special thanks to
the organizer, Kathy
Jones!!
What a
blessing
this will be
for the
students
and the
teachers!!
This amazing group of 44 youth from
Arizona gave 3 days of their vacation
serving in the area. The first day they
painted a giant wall at the Youth
Upliftment School, cleaned the area
for the future playground and did
other repairs at the school.
We would like to thank Tamara Fackrell
(Director of Change the World Foundation)
and her family and friends for painting the
murals at the Youth Upliftment School.
Under the direction of Kathy Jones from Las Vegas,
Nevada, and Sheila Layton of Heritage Pointe, Alberta,
Dominican Starfish Foundation helped host the 10th
Anniversary Party at the Youth Upliftment School.
Because of all the support, we were also able to match the
Giving Tuesday donations for the Youth Upliftment School’s
funding drive for their hot lunch program. In collaboration with
their efforts and ours, $5500 was raised that day to help feed
the hungry students each day in their school!
PEANUT BUTTER DRIVE FOR THE YOUTH
UPLIFTMENT SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
Two groups, one in Canada and
one in the USA, did a Peanut
Butter Drive to help with the
lunch program at the Youth
Upliftment school. It will be
delivered by humanitarian
service groups traveling in the
new year.
Thanks to generous
donors, we were
able to donate
school supplies and
uniforms to 40
children in the
community of
Baraguana. (We
helped in other
communities as
well).
September is always a big month in getting ready for school. So many families can’t afford the
uniforms and school supplies needed for their children. Franyelis (age 18) set a goal to help 50
children go to school. She asked for our help. With the help of donors and her parents, Frank
and Rosa, and others she was able to complete this goal. Although she is young, she is already
making a difference in her community.
We personally invited friends from all over
North America to join us on Giving Tuesday by
doing small fundraising projects with their
families, co-workers and friends.
We set a big goal to raise $15000 USD for
Patrick, Vana and family to have a home.
They have been on our waiting list for 8
years. Recently members of their church
congregation bought them land.
We launched the fundraising site on
November 7th so that people could work
toward giving Tuesday on November 29th.
As November 29th Giving Tuesday drew near, we realized
that because of the tremendous support of our donors, we
were going to surpass our goal of raising funds for Patrick
and Vana to have their home! On November 28th, with
only one day to go, we launched the fundraiser for a
second home for Jackson and Dinora and family. We were
able to raise the entire amount for their home in one day!
5 years ago, Jackson and Dinora traveled
about 7 hours south of Puerto Plata to
visit family. They discovered three
abandoned children (Jackson’s relatives)
who had been living alone for about a
week. They brought them back to
Puerto Plata and have cared for them
ever since as their own. The youngest
was just a baby at the time.
This community center was built by a
foundation called “Hip Hop Heals”
directed by Don Sawyer from Harlem.
Special thanks to Tonya Greiner from
Pennsylvania for donating the land and
to Heidi Smith from Calgary who has
helped so much to pay for hair and nail
courses, and to set up a salon to
employ local beauticians.
We want to give special congratulations to Clarens Descorias. He
graduated on Christmas day as a doctor. He has been helped by
several people through the years but lately it has been Chad and
Tonya Greiner from Pennsylvania who have assisted him through
his residency and more. Thank you!!
We met Clarens in 2014. He has been
working to help his people in the
community of Baraguana. We have
delivered hundreds of food packs there
and helped in other ways as well.
We have seen his growth, his drive and
his concern for his people.
CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Descorias!!
We have worked together with Pastor Frank Pasqual and his family
for several years. This year they brought joy to many children by
hosting a Christmas party at a country-side school!
Every year Dominican Starfish Foundation helps share Christmas
with the children in the impoverished community of Baraguana.
Thanks to our dedicated volunteers there, especially Dr. Clarens!
The kindergarten children in the Javillar school were also thrilled
to get some toys for Christmas! Thanks Jose and Sheyla for
hosting!! A special thanks to Doug and Charlotte Palmer who
donated many of the toys that were given this year!!
We helped with an annual Children’s Christmas party in our
Starfish Center in Javillar. This is hosted each year by Leuris, a
wonderful lady in the community who works many hours getting
donations and preparing an amazing event for the children!!
Another annual event is our senior’s Christmas party. Our director,
Amarilis, loves to help these less recognized citizens of Javillar. This year
this event was made possible by generous donors from North Carolina.
One of the biggest blessings Dominican Starfish Foundation provides is
employment for many construction workers. This year there were over
60 that worked full or part time. We honor them each year with a
Christmas party, again hosted by Amarilis! This comes complete with
food, entertainment, raffles, prizes and more. We love our workers!!
Money for Christmas food packs this year was donated by a generous
couple from North Carolina! They were delivered in many different
communities. These packs were in Llanos de Perez. Thanks so much to
Alise and Raul for there kind efforts to put these together and share!
Megan McKendry and her family from British Columbia put together over 50
hygiene packs and several school packs. They will be traveling with us to the
Dominican in January. We so appreciate their hard work and contributions!!
We
continue
to expect
miracles!!

Dominican Starfish Found 2022 Overview

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 4. We would like to give a huge thanks to Shaina and Sanny Sala and their family for furnishing and beautifying our Starfish Center. The Salas own an operate a large furniture store (ShowHome Furniture) in Calgary, Alberta. Their daughters, Maria and Lease, did the interior design. It is so beautiful!! The second level of our Center is being rented out to people who are coming to do humanitarian work through the foundation. All the proceeds stay in the community to employ people and for operational costs of the center.
  • 5.
  • 6. During 2022 this space was rented out several times to guests coming to do humanitarian service. We certainly feel very blessed to have this amazing family supporting our foundation.
  • 7. A DREAM COME TRUE!! What an awesome experience! There was standing room only at the grand opening of our new playground in Javillar on February 14, 2022. It is just beautiful!! THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE!! This has been in the works for 4 years and has been a dream of our Dominican director, Amarilis, for over 30 years!!
  • 8.
  • 9. Included here are photos of the 16 homes built by Dominican Starfish Foundation in 2022. In addition to these homes: • We helped 10 families to remodel or finish the homes that they had started.
  • 10. We were able to surprise Ana and her family with a new home. She had no idea that this blessing was coming to her when she volunteered to help us clean it for the new owner. Thanks to Wade and Kim Payne for changing lives. Ana and Family
  • 11. The Pimenter Family received their beautiful new home on May 26. This was built by Fernando, Miguel and crew. We are grateful to all who donated to make this possible! Pimenter Family
  • 12. Lula and her family received their new home on May 27. Thanks to Amarilis, Segundo and our Javillar crew for the construction. Thank you to Ruby Best and her family for donating the funds for this home!
  • 13. On June 21, 2021, we announced to David and Sheyla that they would be getting a new home. Funds were raised for Amarilis’s birthday. Sheyla is her daughter and helps so much with the foundation. Due to unforeseen zoning and government regulations, the home cost much more than expected and the family had to borrow funds to complete the construction. David and Sheyla moved in exactly one year later June 21, 2022. We are so happy for them.
  • 14. The home for Fernando and Vickyana and family is complete! Thanks to our Home- Building-Committee and others who donated funds to surprise the family with a new home. • 21. Elias's health problems began 13 years ago in 2009. One day he got up and couldn't walk. He went to the doctor. They found some herniated discs in his back. A very unsuccessful surgery followed leaving him unable to walk. Elias then lost his job and could no longer support his family. Neighbors and friends have been helping. These same neighbors and friends pleaded with Dominican Starfish Foundation to help him. Their new home was completed November 3.
  • 22. Funds for this home were donated by Save the World Foundation directed by Tamara Fackrell. The Polanco family lived in impoverished conditions but give freely what they can to help in the community. The Dominican Starfish team of workers built the home.
  • 23. Adonis works at the Lifestyle Resort as a security guard. He makes less than $200 a month. They have a little girl and just had a new baby girl November 5. They live in a very difficult situation. They are so poor. His wife lived with her mother, and he lived with his mother because neither place had room for both of them. The house is in a very tight spot, but it is all the land that they own. Construction started November 5. The home was finished on December 10.

His mother has been going downhill very fast with the ravages of Parkinson’s disease. The family wasn’t been able to provide adequately for medications, food and health care. We were able to raise funds mostly from members of the resort to assist Jesus so he could help his mother. He has already seen major improvements in her quality of life.
  • 41. In April we were able to provide funds to help with medical care for two young men who were in a serious accident during the Easter week. They have a long road to recovery ahead.

They were able to participate in shopping for the items.

  • 56. September is always a big month in getting ready for school. So many families can’t afford the uniforms and school supplies needed for their children. Franyelis (age 18) set a goal to help 50 children go to school. She asked for our help. With the help of donors and her parents, Frank and Rosa, and others she was able to complete this goal. Although she is young, she is already making a difference in her community.
  • 57.
  • 58. We personally invited friends from all over North America to join us on Giving Tuesday by doing small fundraising projects with their families, co-workers and friends. We set a big goal to raise $15000 USD for Patrick, Vana and family to have a home. They have been on our waiting list for 8 years. Recently members of their church congregation bought them land. We launched the fundraising site on November 7th so that people could work toward giving Tuesday on November 29th.
  • 59. As November 29th Giving Tuesday drew near, we realized that because of the tremendous support of our donors, we were going to surpass our goal of raising funds for Patrick and Vana to have their home! On November 28th, with only one day to go, we launched the fundraiser for a second home for Jackson and Dinora and family. We were able to raise the entire amount for their home in one day! 5 years ago, Jackson and Dinora traveled about 7 hours south of Puerto Plata to visit family. They discovered three abandoned children (Jackson’s relatives) who had been living alone for about a week. They brought them back to Puerto Plata and have cared for them ever since as their own. The youngest was just a baby at the time.
  • 60. This community center was built by a foundation called “Hip Hop Heals” directed by Don Sawyer from Harlem. Special thanks to Tonya Greiner from Pennsylvania for donating the land and to Heidi Smith from Calgary who has helped so much to pay for hair and nail courses, and to set up a salon to employ local beauticians.
  • 61. We want to give special congratulations to Clarens Descorias. He graduated on Christmas day as a doctor. He has been helped by several people through the years but lately it has been Chad and Tonya Greiner from Pennsylvania who have assisted him through his residency and more. Thank you!! We met Clarens in 2014. He has been working to help his people in the community of Baraguana. We have delivered hundreds of food packs there and helped in other ways as well. We have seen his growth, his drive and his concern for his people. CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Descorias!!
  • 62.
  • 63.
  • 64. We have worked together with Pastor Frank Pasqual and his family for several years. This year they brought joy to many children by hosting a Christmas party at a country-side school!
  • 65. Every year Dominican Starfish Foundation helps share Christmas with the children in the impoverished community of Baraguana. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers there, especially Dr. Clarens!
  • 66. The kindergarten children in the Javillar school were also thrilled to get some toys for Christmas! Thanks Jose and Sheyla for hosting!! A special thanks to Doug and Charlotte Palmer who donated many of the toys that were given this year!!
  • 67. We helped with an annual Children’s Christmas party in our Starfish Center in Javillar. This is hosted each year by Leuris, a wonderful lady in the community who works many hours getting donations and preparing an amazing event for the children!!
  • 68. Another annual event is our senior’s Christmas party. Our director, Amarilis, loves to help these less recognized citizens of Javillar. This year this event was made possible by generous donors from North Carolina.
  • 69. One of the biggest blessings Dominican Starfish Foundation provides is employment for many construction workers. This year there were over 60 that worked full or part time. We honor them each year with a Christmas party, again hosted by Amarilis! This comes complete with food, entertainment, raffles, prizes and more. We love our workers!!
  • 70. Money for Christmas food packs this year was donated by a generous couple from North Carolina! They were delivered in many different communities. These packs were in Llanos de Perez. Thanks so much to Alise and Raul for there kind efforts to put these together and share!
  • 71. Megan McKendry and her family from British Columbia put together over 50 hygiene packs and several school packs. They will be traveling with us to the Dominican in January. We so appreciate their hard work and contributions!!
