Up the Ratios Bylaws - a Comprehensive Process of Our Organizationuptheratios
Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications.
Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators.
Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. These lectures provide valuable insights into potential career paths and inspire students to pursue their passions in STEM.
Up the Ratios relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. Contributions of time, expertise, and financial support are crucial to sustaining our programs and expanding our reach. Whether you're an individual passionate about education, a professional in the STEM field, or a company looking to give back to the community, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
We are proud of the positive impact we've had on the lives of countless students, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. By providing these young minds with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, we are not only changing their futures but also contributing to the advancement of technology and innovation on a broader scale.

21. Elias's health problems began
13 years ago in 2009. One
day he got up and couldn't
walk. He went to the doctor.
They found some herniated
discs in his back. A very
unsuccessful surgery followed
leaving him unable to walk.
Elias then lost his job and
could no longer support his
family. Neighbors and friends
have been helping. These
same neighbors and friends
pleaded with Dominican
Starfish Foundation to help
him.
Their new home was
completed November 3.

tight spot, but it is all
the land that they
own.
Construction started
November 5. The home
was finished on
December 10.

help his mother. He has already seen major improvements in her quality of life.

50. We would like to thank Tamara Fackrell
(Director of Change the World Foundation)
and her family and friends for painting the
murals at the Youth Upliftment School.
51. Under the direction of Kathy Jones from Las Vegas,
Nevada, and Sheila Layton of Heritage Pointe, Alberta,
Dominican Starfish Foundation helped host the 10th
Anniversary Party at the Youth Upliftment School.
52.
53. Because of all the support, we were also able to match the
Giving Tuesday donations for the Youth Upliftment School’s
funding drive for their hot lunch program. In collaboration with
their efforts and ours, $5500 was raised that day to help feed
the hungry students each day in their school!
54. PEANUT BUTTER DRIVE FOR THE YOUTH
UPLIFTMENT SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
Two groups, one in Canada and
one in the USA, did a Peanut
Butter Drive to help with the
lunch program at the Youth
Upliftment school. It will be
delivered by humanitarian
service groups traveling in the
new year.
55. Thanks to generous
donors, we were
able to donate
school supplies and
uniforms to 40
children in the
community of
Baraguana. (We
helped in other
communities as
well).
56. September is always a big month in getting ready for school. So many families can’t afford the
uniforms and school supplies needed for their children. Franyelis (age 18) set a goal to help 50
children go to school. She asked for our help. With the help of donors and her parents, Frank
and Rosa, and others she was able to complete this goal. Although she is young, she is already
making a difference in her community.
57.
58. We personally invited friends from all over
North America to join us on Giving Tuesday by
doing small fundraising projects with their
families, co-workers and friends.
We set a big goal to raise $15000 USD for
Patrick, Vana and family to have a home.
They have been on our waiting list for 8
years. Recently members of their church
congregation bought them land.
We launched the fundraising site on
November 7th so that people could work
toward giving Tuesday on November 29th.
59. As November 29th Giving Tuesday drew near, we realized
that because of the tremendous support of our donors, we
were going to surpass our goal of raising funds for Patrick
and Vana to have their home! On November 28th, with
only one day to go, we launched the fundraiser for a
second home for Jackson and Dinora and family. We were
able to raise the entire amount for their home in one day!
5 years ago, Jackson and Dinora traveled
about 7 hours south of Puerto Plata to
visit family. They discovered three
abandoned children (Jackson’s relatives)
who had been living alone for about a
week. They brought them back to
Puerto Plata and have cared for them
ever since as their own. The youngest
was just a baby at the time.
60. This community center was built by a
foundation called “Hip Hop Heals”
directed by Don Sawyer from Harlem.
Special thanks to Tonya Greiner from
Pennsylvania for donating the land and
to Heidi Smith from Calgary who has
helped so much to pay for hair and nail
courses, and to set up a salon to
employ local beauticians.
61. We want to give special congratulations to Clarens Descorias. He
graduated on Christmas day as a doctor. He has been helped by
several people through the years but lately it has been Chad and
Tonya Greiner from Pennsylvania who have assisted him through
his residency and more. Thank you!!
We met Clarens in 2014. He has been
working to help his people in the
community of Baraguana. We have
delivered hundreds of food packs there
and helped in other ways as well.
We have seen his growth, his drive and
his concern for his people.
CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Descorias!!
62.
63.
64. We have worked together with Pastor Frank Pasqual and his family
for several years. This year they brought joy to many children by
hosting a Christmas party at a country-side school!
65. Every year Dominican Starfish Foundation helps share Christmas
with the children in the impoverished community of Baraguana.
Thanks to our dedicated volunteers there, especially Dr. Clarens!
66. The kindergarten children in the Javillar school were also thrilled
to get some toys for Christmas! Thanks Jose and Sheyla for
hosting!! A special thanks to Doug and Charlotte Palmer who
donated many of the toys that were given this year!!
67. We helped with an annual Children’s Christmas party in our
Starfish Center in Javillar. This is hosted each year by Leuris, a
wonderful lady in the community who works many hours getting
donations and preparing an amazing event for the children!!
68. Another annual event is our senior’s Christmas party. Our director,
Amarilis, loves to help these less recognized citizens of Javillar. This year
this event was made possible by generous donors from North Carolina.
69. One of the biggest blessings Dominican Starfish Foundation provides is
employment for many construction workers. This year there were over
60 that worked full or part time. We honor them each year with a
Christmas party, again hosted by Amarilis! This comes complete with
food, entertainment, raffles, prizes and more. We love our workers!!
70. Money for Christmas food packs this year was donated by a generous
couple from North Carolina! They were delivered in many different
communities. These packs were in Llanos de Perez. Thanks so much to
Alise and Raul for there kind efforts to put these together and share!
71. Megan McKendry and her family from British Columbia put together over 50
hygiene packs and several school packs. They will be traveling with us to the
Dominican in January. We so appreciate their hard work and contributions!!
