 Karnataka has an industrial growth rate of 12%
per year.
 Factors for rapid growth
-Sustainable economic growth
-Government thrust on private participation
in development of infrastructure sector.
 Government of Karnataka identify different
projects for development of the state.
 Tadadi port in Karnataka is one among them.
Preliminary step:
 projects amenability for development under
public private partnership frame work.
 If the project is found feasible, detailed
report including detail technical studies
should be worked out for the same.
 Infrastructure Development Corporation
Limited was awarded the mandate for
undertaking the feasibility study.
1. Problem Diagnosis
2. Goal Articulation
3. Forecasting
4. Design of Alternatives
5. Testing
6. Evaluation
7. Implementation
 Un availability of major port
-No major ports in the range of < 300kms
 Transportation cost and travel time
- transporting production materials from
production place to the port increase travel
time and freight charges
- productivity of the region; more raw materials
like iron ore
 Less capacity of the minor ports to import
and export materials
- Karwar and Belekeri handles not more
than 9 million tones per year
 Bad connectivity of cargo movement from
the port to the hinterland
- no railway connectivity (nearest station
is 25km away)
- no direct high way access
 Reason for developing Tadadi port
- for easy cargo movement to the port,
connectivity to the hinterland is critical
factor
- to reduce the transportation cost and
travel time from production place to
the port
- to increase the cargo handling capacity
 Achievement after completion of the port
- Modernization; change in life style of
the local community
- Industrialization; more facilities more
the industries and production companies
- to stimulate private sector investment in
industrial and commercial area
- to ensure the availability of pool of labour
with range of skills to meet the needs of economic
activities in the area
 To predict the impacts of the natural
development of the project
 Increase in cargo i.e., Cargos forecasting
-Proposed govt. projects (hydropower, cement
factory etc)
-Widening of road
-Interest of private sector like JSW
-Expansion of near by major ports
 Industry growth potential- Employment growth
 Multinational manufacturers/ Small or Medium firms
 Population forecasting: City is in young category
 Increase in ships
 Requirement of storage
 Extra berth for increased cargo
 More cargo handling equipment
 Leads development in two phases
Phase1-With current infrastructure like rails,
roads, industries
Phase 2-With change in infrastructure like
widening of roads
 Alt. 1-Karwar port-
-Waterfront area-low
-Available depth-6.5m
-Type-All weather intermediate
 Alt. 2-Belekeri port
-Captive port
 Alt.3-Tadadi port
-Waterfront area-fair
- land development -govt. have 1854 acres
near to this
 Alt. 4-Development of available any of two
ports to meet demand
 Criteria for the selection
 Less impact on nearby property like
acquisition of residential property
 More water front area and depth
 Improve long term shipping operation and
safety
 Avoid impacts on adjacent property like near
beaches
 Improve traffic operation, condition and
safety
 Select Tadadi port according to the criteria;
tadadi port fulfill most of the requirement.
 Plans are tested to evaluate the degree to which
objectives are fulfilled and constraints are
violated.
o Objectives:
 Connectivity issues-Minimization of traffic
diversion
-During construction
-During operation-Roads and railway
• Roads:
• NH 63-NH17=18.06(current),38.25mtpa(Future)
In plain terrain mostly, forest section 78 km
Mostly two laned and 30% stretch is 4 laned
• NH 4-SH69-NH17=9.56mtpa/17mtpa
Forest section-11km, SH 69- intermediate(5.5-7m wide)
• Technical issues-Aghanashimi river prone to
silting
• Sectoral transfer-Mining->power/steel
 Investment, Production & Employment
growth
 Available water front area and depth
 Ship traffic operation and safety
 Constraints:
• Finance-Feasible for investment by private
bodies due to large industrial activity and its
growth potential
• Public relation-about 20-30% are involved in
fishery ,favors
• Land- acquired in past
6.1 Environmental Evaluation
Due to port location
 Effect on communities because of losing
agriculture and housing land
 Erosion and accretion
 Changes current patterns and littoral drifts
 Affects aquatic fauna and flora and also
contamination on bottom part of water
During port construction
 Infrastructure like roads, railways and water
ways
 Water supply drainage and electrical power
 Pile driving, deposition of rubble dredging
 Re-suspension of sediments and turbid water
 Dredging may causes changes current
patterns and flows
 Disposal of dredged material on land cause
leakage of harmful substance into ground
water
 Dredging disturb bottom sediments
 Dredging causes loss of fishery resource
 Dredging removes bottom biota
 Emission of dust and gases from equipment
 Noise and vibration because of equipment
 Disposal of dredged material causes
destruction of plants, loss of vegetation &
leakage of bad material
During port operation
 Ship traffic and discharges may cause
environmental concerns
 Water pollution; spills of soils, lubricants,
fuels and other oily liquids
 Accidental spills of toxic harmful materials
 Leakage of oils will affect fishery resource,
aquatic biota
 Noise and vibration during cargo handling
6.2 Socio and Political Evaluation
Due to port location
 Relocation of local community
 Damages fishing nets and navigation
 Change cultural traditions of local
community
During port operation
 Oil and oily wastes of ship spoil recreational
activities cause serious damage of to tourism
 Ship traffic may disturb boat cruising and
fishery boat operation
 Changes life style of local people
 Labor from outside may cause conflict with
local community
6.3 Economical Evaluation
During port construction
 More job opportunity
 Using local materials for construction
During port operation
 More production gives high economic
beneficial
 implementation of the Suvarna Karnataka
development corridor program for industrial
development
 Government of Karnataka propose to
develop 10 special industrial zones; direct
impact on trade, industry and economic of
the country
 Numerical contribution to the GDP and acts
an economic multiplier
 Project fund
-Project could be funded DEBT equity ratio with
2.33:1
-Interest for the loan is12.5%
 Environmental
-Further study will be done by concerned body
(environmental evaluation and impact
assessment)
 Political authorization
-After all the required study government office
will authorize whether to proceed with the
project.

Feasibility study report on development of tadadi port

  • 1. IIT GUWAHATI 2015 Amit Kumar 154104077 Akash Bishal Das 154104079 Frezgi Assefa 154104100 Presented By:
  • 2.  Karnataka has an industrial growth rate of 12% per year.  Factors for rapid growth -Sustainable economic growth -Government thrust on private participation in development of infrastructure sector.  Government of Karnataka identify different projects for development of the state.  Tadadi port in Karnataka is one among them.
  • 3. Preliminary step:  projects amenability for development under public private partnership frame work.  If the project is found feasible, detailed report including detail technical studies should be worked out for the same.  Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited was awarded the mandate for undertaking the feasibility study.
  • 4. 1. Problem Diagnosis 2. Goal Articulation 3. Forecasting 4. Design of Alternatives 5. Testing 6. Evaluation 7. Implementation
  • 5.  Un availability of major port -No major ports in the range of < 300kms  Transportation cost and travel time - transporting production materials from production place to the port increase travel time and freight charges - productivity of the region; more raw materials like iron ore
  • 6.  Less capacity of the minor ports to import and export materials - Karwar and Belekeri handles not more than 9 million tones per year  Bad connectivity of cargo movement from the port to the hinterland - no railway connectivity (nearest station is 25km away) - no direct high way access
  • 7.  Reason for developing Tadadi port - for easy cargo movement to the port, connectivity to the hinterland is critical factor - to reduce the transportation cost and travel time from production place to the port - to increase the cargo handling capacity
  • 8.  Achievement after completion of the port - Modernization; change in life style of the local community - Industrialization; more facilities more the industries and production companies - to stimulate private sector investment in industrial and commercial area - to ensure the availability of pool of labour with range of skills to meet the needs of economic activities in the area
  • 9.  To predict the impacts of the natural development of the project  Increase in cargo i.e., Cargos forecasting -Proposed govt. projects (hydropower, cement factory etc) -Widening of road -Interest of private sector like JSW -Expansion of near by major ports  Industry growth potential- Employment growth  Multinational manufacturers/ Small or Medium firms  Population forecasting: City is in young category
  • 10.  Increase in ships  Requirement of storage  Extra berth for increased cargo  More cargo handling equipment  Leads development in two phases Phase1-With current infrastructure like rails, roads, industries Phase 2-With change in infrastructure like widening of roads
  • 11.  Alt. 1-Karwar port- -Waterfront area-low -Available depth-6.5m -Type-All weather intermediate  Alt. 2-Belekeri port -Captive port  Alt.3-Tadadi port -Waterfront area-fair - land development -govt. have 1854 acres near to this
  • 12.  Alt. 4-Development of available any of two ports to meet demand  Criteria for the selection  Less impact on nearby property like acquisition of residential property  More water front area and depth  Improve long term shipping operation and safety  Avoid impacts on adjacent property like near beaches
  • 13.  Improve traffic operation, condition and safety  Select Tadadi port according to the criteria; tadadi port fulfill most of the requirement.
  • 14.  Plans are tested to evaluate the degree to which objectives are fulfilled and constraints are violated. o Objectives:  Connectivity issues-Minimization of traffic diversion -During construction -During operation-Roads and railway • Roads: • NH 63-NH17=18.06(current),38.25mtpa(Future) In plain terrain mostly, forest section 78 km Mostly two laned and 30% stretch is 4 laned
  • 15. • NH 4-SH69-NH17=9.56mtpa/17mtpa Forest section-11km, SH 69- intermediate(5.5-7m wide) • Technical issues-Aghanashimi river prone to silting • Sectoral transfer-Mining->power/steel  Investment, Production & Employment growth  Available water front area and depth  Ship traffic operation and safety
  • 16.  Constraints: • Finance-Feasible for investment by private bodies due to large industrial activity and its growth potential • Public relation-about 20-30% are involved in fishery ,favors • Land- acquired in past
  • 17. 6.1 Environmental Evaluation Due to port location  Effect on communities because of losing agriculture and housing land  Erosion and accretion  Changes current patterns and littoral drifts  Affects aquatic fauna and flora and also contamination on bottom part of water
  • 18. During port construction  Infrastructure like roads, railways and water ways  Water supply drainage and electrical power  Pile driving, deposition of rubble dredging  Re-suspension of sediments and turbid water  Dredging may causes changes current patterns and flows
  • 19.  Disposal of dredged material on land cause leakage of harmful substance into ground water  Dredging disturb bottom sediments  Dredging causes loss of fishery resource  Dredging removes bottom biota  Emission of dust and gases from equipment
  • 20.  Noise and vibration because of equipment  Disposal of dredged material causes destruction of plants, loss of vegetation & leakage of bad material During port operation  Ship traffic and discharges may cause environmental concerns  Water pollution; spills of soils, lubricants, fuels and other oily liquids
  • 21.  Accidental spills of toxic harmful materials  Leakage of oils will affect fishery resource, aquatic biota  Noise and vibration during cargo handling 6.2 Socio and Political Evaluation Due to port location  Relocation of local community  Damages fishing nets and navigation  Change cultural traditions of local community
  • 22. During port operation  Oil and oily wastes of ship spoil recreational activities cause serious damage of to tourism  Ship traffic may disturb boat cruising and fishery boat operation  Changes life style of local people  Labor from outside may cause conflict with local community
  • 23. 6.3 Economical Evaluation During port construction  More job opportunity  Using local materials for construction During port operation  More production gives high economic beneficial  implementation of the Suvarna Karnataka development corridor program for industrial development
  • 24.  Government of Karnataka propose to develop 10 special industrial zones; direct impact on trade, industry and economic of the country  Numerical contribution to the GDP and acts an economic multiplier
  • 25.  Project fund -Project could be funded DEBT equity ratio with 2.33:1 -Interest for the loan is12.5%  Environmental -Further study will be done by concerned body (environmental evaluation and impact assessment)  Political authorization -After all the required study government office will authorize whether to proceed with the project.  Recommendation for the next stage
