Part 3 and 4 of the FCE Speaking Test last about 3 and 4 minutes respectively. In Part 3, candidates are given visuals and instructions to discuss different forms of transportation for a hypothetical holiday. They must talk about each option and decide on the best one. Part 3 tests a candidate's ability to discuss, express opinions, agree/disagree, and speculate. Part 4 involves the examiner in a discussion on the same topic, testing a candidate's ability to express and justify opinions and agree/disagree.

3. In Part 3 of the test, which lasts about 3 minutes, the
examiner will give both candidates instructions and a
set of visuals and the candidates will have to try to
reach some form of agreement.

The examiner will say something like:

Now, I'd like you to talk about something together for
about 3 minutes.
I'd like you to imagine that you are planning a week-
long touring holiday with your partner around the
country that you're studying in. You want to see as
much as possible but don't want to spend too much
money on transport. Look at the types of transport
shown in the chart.
First talk to each other about how useful each of these
forms of transport might be for your holiday. Then
decide which one would be best.

12. Argue and Discuss
• argue= has several meanings... 'argue with' means speak
angrily to each other about something.
• discuss= when you discuss something, you talk about it from
different viewpoint .
