Father Jack Flaherty Analysis
A Saint in the Making: Father Jack Flaherty
Priests can help you navigate your way through life because God's voice shines through them.
Father Jack Flaherty is one of the most compassionate and driven priest I have ever met. He goes
from parish to parish spreading God's love to everyone in need and goes above and beyond in
making sure that everyone feels welcomed wherever they go. Due to his large time commitment,
dedication to God and his parishioners, and his exemplary exhibition of heroic qualities, Father Jack
is a hero
One important aspect of Father Jack's life that makes him a hero is the large amount of time he
commits to being a priest. Father Jack knew his calling was the priesthood, but he had no idea how
much schooling went into it. According to Study.com, when becoming a priest men must go through
three specific steps. First, they must earn a bachelor's degree in the fields of either philosophy,
religious studies, or English ("Become a Catholic Priest: Step–by–Step Career Guide"). Then after
careful reflection on their vocation, they need to study at a seminary, classes that prepare them for
the priesthood by practicing preaching or studying church history by using their critical–thinking
skills ("Become a Catholic Priest: Step–by–Step Career Guide"). Lastly, they must become
ordained, when the future priest receives holy orders, a sacrament, from another priest, during a
Mass or a celebration of their own ("Become a Catholic Priest: Step–by–Step Career

Essay on Confirmation in the Catholic Church
Confirmation in the Catholic Church Confirmation is a Catholic sacrament of mature Christian
commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of
Initiation for Catholics and a Sacrament of faith in God's fidelity to us
Confirmation is the moment when two things are confirmed. The candidate confirms his/her faith in
Christ and takes full responsibility for that faith and for membership of the community of faith,
which we call the "church". God, through the Bishop, confirms God's claim on the candidate's life.
Whatever happens at confirmation, the moment for those who are confirmed is a ... Show more

Confirmation complements the symbols of Baptism. The historical origins of the symbols of
Confirmation are many and diverse. One source of the rituals for the Sacrament of Confirmation can
be found in the bathing customs of the Roman Empire. The water ritual (Baptism) came to mean the
washing away of sin, and the oil ritual (Confirmation) was interpreted to mean the sweet fragrance
of God's presence: sanctifying grace. In the same way God's grace fills us with redemption and
salvation. This grace, this presence of God in us, is the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is the Sacrament
of the Holy Spirit. Anointing can mean many things. From ancient times, oil has been a symbol of
strength, healing and agility. For Jews, our ancestors in the faith, oil is the sign of God appointing
someone to be a priest, prophet and king. Christians believe that Jesus of Nazareth was this anointed
one. As "Christ" means "anointed," we call ourselves "Christians" because we are the anointed ones,
the "Oiled People," so to speak. The Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist initiate us
into that "oiled" community, the community anointed to continue the vocation of the Messiah, the
Christ.
At Baptism, the priest lays his hand on those to be baptised and marks them with the sign of the
cross. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the priest lays his hands on the head of the

Glory Characters
The second character is the police lieutenant. He is the direct opponent of the priest in this novel. He
is a round character. He is a real character, who is thought to be based upon Tomas Garride Canabal.
He is a representative of the government. The nameless lieutenant is fervently anti–clerical and
believes that the church preaches false promises to the people.
The lieutenant is described as having a very strong and resolute temperament. As a disciplined man
of principles, he is always sure of his decisions, he never hesitates and he has self–respect. He
reveals the dangers of the cold idealism. So, he is associated with the "power" of the novel's title
while the priest is associated with the "Glory".

Greene satires the church through the behavior of the whisky priest; he is a man with a shameful
past full of sins. He has illegitimate child and has a lust of drinking brandy. So, he is a bad image as
a representative of God on the earth. Greene's satire to the government is portrayed by the lieutenant
who suffers from excessive idealism and has dominated desire to eradicate all the church men from
the world. Greene satires the conflict between each other. So, the long conflict between the whisky
priest and the lieutenant is a symbolic representation of the conflict between church and
government. "Go and find it yourself on the rubbish–tip then" (The Power and the Glory 121),
rubbish–tip is symbolic of the inevitability of sin and corruption. Greene uses flashback to compare
between the past and the present of the priest. The priest always longing to his past where he is

Summary On Women 's Decline
Chapter 8 Summary of Women's Decline as Clergy Due to the Early Church Fathers "God has
ordained female pastors from eternity past. That part is not a problem for God. The problem is with
us, with the church. We are slow in binding and loosing on earth what God has already bound and
loosed in heaven" (Mat 16:19; 18:18; Dr. Martin Hanna). At the Council of Nicaea, 325, bishops
were given power of veto over who could become bishops in their respective areas. This in turn
accelerated the concentration of their authority.98 By 354, the church fathers appear to take on a
duel personality when it came to women serving in the church. On one side, women were inferior if
they were married. On the other side, unmarried women (virgins) could possess autonomy and
equality with men. However, this only pertained to spiritual equality and did not carry over to social
structure.21 Under the rule of Constantine the Great, increased centralization of religious authority
expanded the wealth and prestige of the men who administrated cleric authority.99 In addition, the
emperor's authority became involved in the development of the church and resulted in the church
being involved in high political decisions. This action furthered the influence of the of the emperor
over the election of bishops and church policy. These developments placed church officials in the
position of having to compete for the emperor's favor.99 It was decided at the Council of Laodicea,

Compare And Contrast Between Tides And Between Tides
Fang culture, Tío Abeso emphasizes that though they do not read books to learn their culture, "[they]
know [their] tradition because the eldest member passes it on to the young so that when he too is
old, he will in turn impart the tradition to his young" (Ndongo 92). Ndongo demonstrates through
this novel that education can take more than one form, and though it differs from Western ideals, it
still serves as a uniting force amongst the tribe. Similarly, Pierre is guided by his grandmother
throughout childhood. When speaking with the Colonel, Pierre hears his grandmother's voice in his
head speaking about shikwembu, and compares the description with the Colonel (Mudimbe 52).
In both of these novels, education is exemplified in ways other than ancestral teachings. In Between
Tides, Pierre receives an education starting from elementary school. We learn that in addition to his
schooling to become a priest, he studied canon law. In Shadows of Your Black Memory, the
Spaniards used education as a tool to colonize the Fang people, teaching them to recognize they
should be grateful that they had been saved and to glorify their Spanish ancestors:
"...when Don Ramón asked you what you were, your little voice stood out clearly: all of us together

Chapter 1: Albertyn: On October 17, 1939, The Red Army had entered a small town called Albertyn
in Poland. It came clear that Germany and Russia were dividing up Poland. Father Walter was a
young American parish priest. Many people began to not show up to church because they were
scared that they would get caught. More and more people began to turn away from God. Walter talks
about how even at the roughest of times, you should always stay faithful to God.
Chapter 2: The Decision to Enter Russia: A friend of Father Walters was a man named Father Makar.

He was packed onto prison trains like cattle. From being in prison for 5 years, he was dying to know
what important events have happened. He describes how differently he is from the prisoners and
how they have nothing in common. He soon came to understand that underneath their violent
exterior and moral code that they were men driven by fear. Father Walter would be laboring in a
vineyard and actually looked forward to it because he would be able to converse with people and do
something.
Chapter 9: The Body: At the Siberian slave labor camps it was very harsh. Father Walter would
work 15 hours straight shoveling coal onto a conveyer belt. He describes the pain he went through
but yet still had to push on. They were also not given enough food for the amount of work that the
men did. He explains how the barracks only provided enough shelter to make survival possible. He
would say that his muscles felt like they were all strung out by the end of each day and how it was
almost impossible to move each morning when they woke up at 5 A.M.
Chapter 10: Work: Every laborer is assigned a quota and if they fulfill the quota, then they can eat. If
you do not meet the quota then you are given just enough rations to stay alive. Almost everybody
was on the level of starvation and everybody had to fight to survive. Father had the lowest difficulty
of work but after getting caught preaching to the other prisoners, then he was put in the highest level
of difficulty.

Óscar Romero was a Roman Catholic priest that stood up for the poor and injustice in the troubled
nation of El Salvador. In the early stages of his life, Romero had entered a boarding school for
priests at the age of thirteen. Then he went to the national boarding school in San Salvador. He
finished his studies at the Gregorian University in Rome, and was appointed a priest in Rome in
1942. Although Romero wanted to acquire a doctorate in theology, he had to go home to El Salvador
in 1944 due to a lack of priests. He initially served as pastor, but because of his outstanding talent,
he was marked for greater responsibilities. In 1970, he became the auxiliary bishop for San

up for the poor. When important political figures in the country told him to be quiet and to stop
speaking out against these injustices, he refused, often putting his own body in between his people
and their perpetrators. His defense of the Salvadoran people was very effective in protecting them
from the senseless violence and oppression by the Salvadoran government. He was truly a hero. He
advocated human rights without the use of violence or harm to others, he used his voice to bring
justice to the citizens of El Salvador. He should be remembered as a strong–willed advocate. Óscar
Romero did not give up, "'As a Christian,' he remarked on one such occasion, 'I do not believe in

Empowerment For Ministry Among The Philippines
Introduction An issue many pastors face today is the definitive difference between a called
professional clergy and a called laity and the necessary responsibilities for the empowerment of laity
within their specific missional context. This issue of empowerment for ministry among the laity has
long been a problem debated within the ranks of church leadership and the field of practical
theology. The average believer is faced with the challenge of developing a biblical understanding of
the "call of God" that is received from God for the fulfillment of their ministry, which is necessary
to form a clear understanding of the role of the laity within the church in light of the professional
clergy. This paper will focus upon the biblical understanding of the "priesthood of all believers," as
the laos, or people of God and the role of the professional clergy to equip, empower and encourage
laity to flourish in the work in which God has called them to do. The development of the historical
views of lay ministry within the local church is also a necessary component that will be addressed in
dealing with this dilemma. This paper will also seek to present biblical narratives presenting the
importance of the role of both a called clergy and a called laity for the successful continuation of a
biblical model of the church within today's society. Properly Defining the Roles of Clergy and Laity

Frank O'Connor's the First Confession Essay
Learning plays an essential role in life. We learn something new everyday. In Frank O'Connor's
short story "The First Confession", Jackie, the main character, learns a lesson he'll always remember.
After Jackie's first confession, he could now be confident that he was not such a sinner, and that
Nora, his sister, was wrong. While people focused on Jackie's own wrong doings, they weren't
focusing on their own wrong actions. Sometimes people's ignorance can bring them into a whole
different reality. Through certain characters and different incidents, O'Connor stresses his theme that
people's ignorance can blind them from their own sins.

Nora was not the only character in the story that was blinded by her own ignorance. Jackie's own
grandmother was deceived by Nora, and was not a good person herself. "She takes porter, father," I
said, knowing well from the way Mother talked of it that this was a mortal sin, and hoping it would
make the priest take a more favorable view of my case." (335). His grandmother drank alcohol
regularly and sided with Nora in all matters. ."..and she knows I don't like her, and she gives pennies
to Nora and none to me" (335). The grandmother would purposely reward Nora and punish Jackie
when he did nothing wrong. She acted as is Jackie was the sinner, when in reality, she was the one
sinning. She was addicted to sniffing tobacco and embarrassed Jackie. Her ignorance led to mistakes
she can never fix.
Jackie seemed to be the only character in the story that was not blinded by his ignorance. Sure
Jackie was very hesitant about confession, but he didn't' know any better. Jackie was a very honest
and loyal man. "Nora, my sister, just sucked up to the old woman for the penny she got every Friday
out of the old–age pension, a thing I could not do. I was too honest, that was my trouble" (331). He
didn't want to harm anyone, and was truly good at heart. His grandmother was a horrible person, and
treated Jackie horribly. Jackie did not seek any sort of revenge; he didn't want to associate with
people like his grandmother or Nora. "You never saw such an

The Theology And Practice Of Pastoral Care Essay
The Protestant Reformation indicated that a human can "connect to God and can do so without the
aid of a priest." The ecclesiology behind this is basically what aids me in my ministry. Peterson, in
his book Essential Church, explains "the primary affirmation is not that each person is his or her
own priest but that each Christian can be a priest, advocate, intercessor, and evangelist to others."
William Willimon, Pastor: the Theology and Practice of Ordained Ministry, highlights a variety of
ways in which a pastor functions. In this paper, I am going to explain the ways in which my current
ministry setting connects with the concept of priest as pastor in relation to worship and the connect
and context of pastoral care while teaching others that they are able to accomplish the same task.
Willimon explains that "all of the pastor's sheepherding takes its purpose and content from the
pastor's leadership of worship." Willimon indicates several points in which I agree with and a few
that I struggle with. As a pastor, we assume a responsibility for the people who attend the church.
With that responsibility, we also are responsible "to God for the flock." That responsibility is not to
be taken lightly. It is through the worship that pastors have an incredible opportunity to tough the
life of many souls. Although it is viewed by many as the pastor touching the souls; it is truly God
touching the souls and utilizing the pastor as the vehicle. If the question is "who

The Legend Of Subbanna Summary
The play is a monologue based on the legend of Veeranna who belongs to the chitradurga region of
Karnataka. Before its theatrical effectiveness in the play the legend is incorporated from Kannada
writer, T.R. Subbanna's (Knows as TaRaSu) novel, Hamsageethe (Swan Song) Published in 1952.
The title of the novel literally means the 'swan song' of the protagonist, Venkatasubbayya whom
Subbanna inserts in the tale of Veeranna, the archaka of the Hidambeshwara temple. About the
legend narrated in Subbanna's version Aparna Bhargava Dharwadker writes in the 'Introduction" to
his collected Play (Vol.II): The married priest has passionately in love with a mistress to whom he
takes the offering form the temple after the evening prayers. One day the palegar (chieftain)
discovers a hair in the prasada and demands and explanation from Veerganna, who claims that the
hair belongs to god. Challenged by the chieftain to prove the truth of this claim, the priest in turn
challenges god to display hair or accepts his head in punishment, and enters a meditative trance to
the accompaniment of Venkatasubbayya's song. When the chieftain arrives the next day to expose
Veeranna's lie, the Shivalinga has indeed sprouted long silken hair, and when (urged by the singer)
he pulls out a tuft to test its authenticity, blood begins to ooze from the crown of the lingam.

Literary Theme Of Self Identity Essay
In Harper Lee 's To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee writes, "before I can live with other folks I 've got to
live with myself. The one thing that doesn 't abide by majority rule is a person 's conscience (Lee,
108)." As displayed in To Kill a Mockingbird and many others, the literary theme of self–identity
coupled with coming of age has been a long running one in the history of literature. Certainly, we
find this theme in novels such as Between Tides and Shadows of Your Black Memory, respectively.
The development of character and self–identity is vital in the analysis of each protagonist. Between
Tides follows Pierre Landu, a black Catholic Priest and revolutionist, on a journey to right his
wrongs through rigorous self–examination. Pierre, having rejected his African ancestry during
adolescence, in attempts to integrate into the Catholic Priesthood finds himself dissatisfied with the
priesthood during his adult years. In attempts to reconnect to his cultural roots he joins a
revolutionist movement to deconstruct colonialism in his African nation. Through growth and the
tumultuous discovery of self, Pierre recognizes that there is no easy resolution in rediscovering
himself or Africa. Similarly, Shadows of Your Black Memory, is largely about a young boy 's
journey into adulthood. Shadows is retold through the memory of the adult version of the young
boy. Unlike Pierre, the Narrator, who is never a given a name is strikingly aware of the cultural and
social parallels in which his

Silence, By Shusaku Endo
One common theme between good and bad priests is that the vocation they were called to never
seems to completely leave them. This is a common theme in Silence, by Shusaku Endo. In the
beginning of the novel, the reader discovers that Ferreiera apostatized, giving up not only his roles
as a priest but his faith in God as well. Although Ferreira abandoned the priesthood and gave up
shepherding the few Catholics of Japan, he still continues "to be useful to others, [which] was the
one wish and the only dream of one who had dedicated himself to the priesthood" . However, once
he is reunited with Sebastian, "there flashed into his eyes a servile smile and momentary shame".
Here Ferreiera feels as though he has failed Sebastian because if he had not apostatized, Sebastian,
acting as a good priest, would never have gone to Japan to save him. Father Sebastian Rodrigues
behaves as a good priest throughout the majority of the novel. He always remains humble and
recognizes that he is an imperfect human being, claiming, "I did not come here to condemn you. I
am not here as your judge" . He recognizes that God is the only judge and although he seems like
"the voice crying in the wilderness", Rodriguez ministers to all Japanese Christians by educating,
performing the sacraments, and protecting his parishioners, giving them "a human warmth they
never previously knew". Even when he gives advice against God, like telling the prisoners to
trample the fumie, he immediately realizes

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Joseph Francis Girzone is a priest. Advised by his doctor to withdraw from administrative work, he
immediately set about a new career as a writer and philosopher. Though only 54 years old at the
time he wrote the book, his experience as a priest had been unusual. He worked with teenage gangs
in New York, and in the local mining area of Pennsylvania. He taught in schools most of his life, and
worked in parishes at the same time. He was chairman of a government human rights commission
which settled a jail riot and mediated racial tensions in public schools. On numerous occasions, he
was called upon to negotiate in prison disturbances.

everyone. They talked with him about everything. He was very intelligent and almost everyone liked
him. Mainly he talked about religion, the religion that Jesus taught, a religion of freedom and
without authority. Many people agreed with him, but a few strongly disagreed: some priests, pastors,
bishops and clergy in general. As a result of this disagreement, things became very difficult for
Joshua. He had to go to Rome to a congregation of bishops for a proceeding against him. He told the
bishops what he believed. After the proceeding he simply went away, without saying anything to
anybody. The bishops voted for censure. The bishops agreed that Joshua showed a hostile attitude
towards authority, that his criticism lacked understanding of the realities of life and the authority of
Christ on earth. Joshua had to cease talking about these matters to the faithful, under penalty of
further censure. But Joshua had disappeared already. His mission was over, so he went

Essay on The Debate Over Women in the Catholic Church
The Debate Over Women in the Catholic Church
The question of the ordination of women to the priesthood has moved to the forefront of theological
controversy in recent years, prompting a swamping of books, and religious opinions. This
controversial issue stems not only from the renewed interest of the Catholic Church in the nature of
its priesthood, but also, and perhaps predominantly, from the efforts of women to achieve a new and
deeper understanding of their religion. The question, should women be ordained as ministers in the
church immediately implies many questions. What difference could female priests make to the
church? Did Jesus allow for women to be priests? What has been the result of many centuries of
male priesthood? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is ample evidence in Scripture for women's leadership in the early church. Such leadership
became increasingly prohibited as the church became a public institution, as it was not considered
proper for women to hold leadership positions in public places. As the world has come to see the
equality of women holding leadership positions in the civil public world; so it would be right for
them to be church leaders today. This would signal the church's real belief in the equality of women
and men.
The Old Testament states on many occasions that women are not allowed to be priests. These
statements are based on the fact that men were born first therefore they are automatically capable of
doing a better job. The Old Testament tends to hold a very biased opinion in that they did not even
state that women participated in church life.
The New Testament does, however, give a precedent for the ordination of deaconesses (I Tim. 3:8–
11, Rom. 16:1). The Bible states that Aquila and Priscilla, who served under Paul's administration,
were deacon and deaconess. It also goes on to explain the importance of the role of women in the
church and the fact that they were major contributors to the church community and in the way that
the church was run. Why then, in certain parts of the Bible, does it state that women held no
importance in the church when obviously they were contributors.

Marriage of Catholic Priests Essay
The Catholic Church, being nearly 2,000 years old, still follows many of the same rules and
guidelines established in the early church. One item that many Catholics are surprised to learn is that
the tradition of priests and other clergy members remaining celibate has not always been present in
the church. There are many Catholics, in and out of the clergy, who believe that priests should have
the ability to get married and raise a family. In fact, priestly celibacy is not a church law, but, as
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone says it is a "positive tradition," and not
"untouchable" (France–Pressez). However, some critics of the practice would argue that celibacy is
not a positive tradition, and that in fact it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems like a simple decision for the church to make: Make celibacy optional, recruit much–
needed new priests. A few of the branches of the Catholic Church in Eastern Europe allow their
priests to be married. The Vatican allows the marriages to keep church members from converting to
Orthodox Christianity, the dominant religion in that part of the world. A recent article in The New
York Times profiles Reverend Yuriy Volovetskiy, the priest at a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
Volovetskiy is married and has six children. He says that being married helps him better relate to his
parishioners. He says having children has helped him become a part of society. It is easier for him to
explain things to his parish if he has actually lived through them. Volovetskiy also says that celibacy
is unnatural, and that no one can escape from having a sexual life (Levy). Many priests, after taking
the vow of celibacy, discover that they can't suppress their sexual feelings towards others. Many
priests have secret relationships that they hide from their parish. Good Tidings is an organization set
up by a woman and her husband, a former Catholic priest, to help priests who have fallen in love to
decide whether to leave the priesthood. The organization has been contacted by almost 2000 women
who were sexually involved

Literary Analysis Of John O 'Connor'sFirst Confession'
Will there ever be an object or idea that can reverse a "mistake"? As humans have evolved, there
have been different notions created on the consequences of doing certain activities or actions. While
the preceding is important to take into mind, does it always have to be so serious? Any individual
who grows up does either childish actions or just simple mistakes. O'Connor shows how the
formality of this can be taken to an extreme point with the story of Jackie. In "First Confession" he
creates a humorous tone with the utilization of figurative language and characterization. To begin
with, "First Confession" holds a strong message, but it holds it with a touch of humor. With this
story being told from a reflective point of view, it really shows the comical sides of the story. Most
of us have those stories that as we reflect on them now, can be very funny; the same was for Jackie.
Jackie wrote about his first confession, which was probably from a few years back and now he
highlights the funny parts of them. For example, the rivalry between Nora, his sister, and him. A
rivalry which then seemed very serious for Jackie, was not that serious in reality. As well, his
grandmother's arrival was so bad for him then that he even plotted her murder. The humorous side of
this story is reflected mainly in his conversation with the priest. The priest tells him, "Between
ourselves, there's a lot of people I'd like to do the same to, but I'd never have the nerve." By

The Priestly Line Of Malki Tzedek
About the Priestly Line of Malki Tzedek – for those that want to learn more.
In Numbers 18 the Most High says, speaking about the priesthood, that it is an eternal covenant with
Aaron and the Levites that these are the duties that he and they have. What 's clear here is no one
from the Davidic line in the tribe of Judah could ever bring an incense offering into mikdash ha–
kodesh(the holy of holies) in the Temple Lev 16:12–13. There can never be a high priest from the
house of David. The priesthood belongs to Aaron, his sons and the Levites forever.
This next point must be addressed. In the Tanakh(OT) it says David 's sons were priests (2 Sam
8:18), that doesn 't mean they were priests of Aaron. The Hebrew word there translated as priests ...

David is given the power of defeating his enemies in the manner that Abraham was in Genesis 14.
That power is being passed down to him and now he will defeat his enemies. the Most High does
not break His promises, they are covenants, He 's not going to change them. You are a priest forever
David is told, a Kohane, one who has been given an important office. David 's children are called
priests, Kohane, that does not mean they are of the lineage of Aaron and will officiate in the Temple
performing priestly duties. It means David 's sons hold important offices.
Numbers 18:19 "All the gifts of the Kodesh things[offerings], which the children of Israel offer unto
YHWH, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, as an eternal portion; it is an
everlasting covenant of salt before YHWH unto thee and to thy seed with thee. '"
The Most High says the Priesthood belongs to Aaron and his descendants forever, a salt covenant.
These are eternal covenants, they can not be broken, in fact, the Most High calls it a salt covenant.
Why a salt covenant? Because salt never spoils, it never degrades. Not only doesn 't it degrade but it
preserves food, it never changes. The covenant is as permanent as salt. So if someone tells you the
covenant the Most High made with Aaron and his sons, the covenant the Most High made with the
tribe of Levi, the covenant the Most High made with the

Contradiction In The Wife Of Bath, By Hafez And The...
In the poems by Hafez and The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, religion and religious institutions are
critiqued for the contradictions they pose to the people that they influence. Often, what a religion
preaches runs opposite to how those that practice the religion tend to behave. This opposition to
dogma is often not malicious and derives from temptations being irresistible to the average human
being. However, sometimes the contradictions inside a religion and its institutions are harmful or so
puzzling that they deserve to be called out and examined for their absurdity. In the poems by Hafez,
this contradiction is the supposedly holy priests being drunkards while still preaching against
debauchery; in The Canterbury Tales, the Christian insistence of virginity in women is critiqued for
its impossibility, the Wife of Bath is used to show the bias Christianity has against women in regards
to marriage, and the greediness of the church is exposed. These authors show that religion is an
invention of humankind that falls prey to logical fallacies and vices just like its creators.
The poems by Hafez reveal the contradiction of priests speaking out against alcohol while
simultaneously indulging in its pleasures. Alcohol can be anything from the blood of a savior to a
shunned beverage only consumed by devils in religion. For Hafez, a Muslim, the priests or mullahs
of his day and age preach lengthy sermons in condemnation of wine and drinking. Hafez shows in
the text that these same holy men partake in alcohol just as much as they crusade against it. Hafez
provides evidence for this by saying, "Brother believers, whatever shall we do? The priest left the
mosque for the tavern yesterday! How can the believers turn to Mecca to pray? When our Mullah
turns to the tavern instead?!" (Hafez 11). Hafez hyperbolically states that he will no longer be able
to turn to Mecca to pray due to the falsehoods of the priest. The priest is the representative of the
religion of Islam and its institutions. Hafez is incredulous because he cannot put faith in priests and
what they preach if they blatantly go against their own teachings. Hafez uses this hypocrisy of the
priests to follow his own personal religious path without being

A Tale of Sin and Atonement Essay
The Beautiful Vampire – A tale of sin and atonement?
In Theophile Gautier's The Beautiful Vampire, he is very subtle in presenting the sins committed.
Although all of the characters in this story commit various sins, the sins of Romuald are the sins
primarily focused on. This sinning of Romauld is very unique in that he is a ordained priest who
should be one of the last people to commit these sins. It is this reason that makes the story what it is
and draws the readers in initially.
The first sin that the reader witnesses is during Romauld's ordainment ceremony. Instead of keeping
his head bowed, as one should during prayer, he raises his head and spots the beautiful Clarimonde
(Gautier 231). If Romauld would have stayed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Romauld's temptation into evil is very much like that of the temptation of Adam and Eve in the
Garden of Eden. He does not realize that it is actually evil enticing him just as eve did not realize
that the serpent was an evil being.
Romauld's lusting for Clarimonde becomes more evident when he is taken to be with her dead body
(244). This lusting over a dead body is very disturbing to many readers for two different reasons.
The first of these reasons is the fact that a celibate priest is having these sexual attractions towards a
woman. A priest, one of the holiest men of God should be able to control his ungodly desires if
anyone can. The second reason for this disturbance is the face that he is lusting over the body of a
dead woman. Although we find out later that she has been dead all along, not just in her chamber,
the idea of necrophilia is a very disturbing concept to most people.
After she is found not to be dead, Romauld continuously wonders what would have happened if he
was not a priest. Would they be lovers? Would they be married? Or would they even be together at
all? This questioning of his life's choices is very similar his previous thoughts of renouncing God
and these thoughts appear to continue to arise throughout the story which makes the reader wonder
if this many is even holy at all. Later in the story, Romauld mentions how he is able to

What Is The Similarities In The First Confession
The First Confession Growing up there is always a first time to experience everything. Such as,
riding a bike, hanging out with your friends without your parents, and the start of daily chores. In
Catholic and many other religious families, a main focus for a "first time" for their children is
baptizing. In order for a baptism to take place, a child must attend a first confession. In Angela's
Ashes and
First Confession both Frank McCourt and Frank O'Connor contain many similarities in their
experiences of their first confessions, but are also very different. In the Memoir, Angela's Ashes, the
setting takes place in Limerick, Ireland. Perhaps the events in this book happened around the year of
1940. O'Connors short piece also took place a round this time. Although ... Show more content on

In Angela's Ashes, Frankie gets a much harsher punishment for simply sharing a story with the
Priest that he heard from one of the other boys. Both children get treated very differently during
their first confession. While in the confession box with the Priest, Jackie climbs up onto the arm rest
thinking it is a stand to kneel on and pray on. Once the window is opened, Jackie falls off and
tumbles out of the confession box and into the aisle. On the other hand, Frankie gets a thump on his
head for talking while walking on his way to confession. The reader would find this humorous,
while the Priest would not. In First Confession, the Priest tried to hold back from not letting out a
laugh due to
Jackie's ridiculous actions. Unlike in First Confession, what is said in Angela's Ashes by a teacher,
Priest, or parent has to be taken very serious if it has anything to do with religion or church. As the
students walk to first confession, a boy comments, "If we so much as move a lip on the streets of

Ernest Hemingway Rhetorical Analysis Essay
Hemingway chose a unique approach to his story. Many short stories are filled with formal speech.
However, Hemingway presented to us his story, without using exquisite words or elongated
sentences. His writing was direct and minimal, but also precise. The author allowed us to create our
own environment, by playing off common experiences in everyday life. By doing that he produced
an atmosphere that can easily be fashioned and manipulated by the reader in order to create a
relatable surrounding.
Hemingway uses a neutral to informal diction in his story. He chose to utilize words like ridiculous
and unimportant rather than lavish terms such as ludicrous, preposterous, insignificant, or
inconsequential. Much of the story is also written with nominal descriptive detail, and much is left
up to the imagination. He exploited the vast minds of his readers, by presenting them with the
opportunity to generate a world than they themselves could fully understand.

Jackie was roughly seven at the time of the story. Clearly, he was older when he narrated this story.

Escaping From Entrapment
From the darkness of entrapment, Jackie starts off in the darkness and soon finds a guide into the
light. On page (179) the narrator says "a little light entered the box." Jackie is at his worse in a very
dark spot and is trapped within his own hatred towards his family and the hatred they shown him.
Jackie soon lets go of all his past thoughts of what people have taught him about religious things
when he loses his grip on the ledge and falls into the church thus starting building a stairway for
Jackie to climb out of his trap, with help from a peer. As Jackie is at his worst the priest sheds a little

Escaping from his entrapment, Jackie believes in himself with confidence and starts to see and hear
the world around him. Jackie thinks to himself, " .... barring the one bad business of my
grandmother it didn't seem so bad"(180). Jackie has almost fully escaped from his own entrapment
by accepting and realizing that his sins towards his grandmother aren't so bad. Jackie then reaches
his enlightenment when "he steps outside the church and waves of sunlight come down upon him"
(182). There was brutal detail that showed us Jackie's fear of confession by comparing it to walking
into hell, and now that he is free of sins and has a new friend he has the ability to hear and see the
world around him. He finally realizes that the world around him isn't so bad. We know that Jackie's
world isn't so bad but it is far from paradise. We know this because on page (182) it says "I heard the
screech of trams on the road and my heart soared." Jackie is glad his world isn't perfect but he can
now realize how great the world around him is and he embraces it. Jackie being able to see the
world also shows us how this confession has changed Nora. Jackie also has his fourth and final
examine of conscience to finally clear his mind of everything bad because of all his confessed sins

There will be plenty of houses, cars and other things needing to be fixed. Had the criminal charges

For the last two slots in the shelter they had a hard time deciding. Some wanted to pick the 16–year–

What Was Jackie's First Confession
1. Why was Jackie "scared to death" of his first confession? What events fueled his fear? What
specifically is Jackie afraid of, if he makes his first confession?
Jackie was afraid that his confession would go badly due to the way he feels about his grandmother

A Priest Of The Family
In Tobin's short story, "A Priest in the family", a widowed grandmother named Molly, possibly in
her upper seventies, has a priest of a son named Frank. The Irish culture is built upon three pillars:
church, garda (state/government) and teachers (can be seen as leaders as well). Each pillar is tightly
interwoven and have individuals some will say are role models. As mentioned earlier the church is a
pillar in Ireland society, meaning priest are held in high regards, they are noble men who can do no
wrong, and they are the individuals within their communities where its members come not only
come to for reassurance, spiritual guidance, but also to confess their sins so they can be free of any
of their wrong doings. Molly's son was a priest who shattered this holy image. Frank's mother can be
quoted saying, "it is nice having a son a priest who's very holy. He's one of the old–school. But I can
say what I like to you". Throughout the story there is this sort of anticipation, and it begins when
Father Greenwood abnormally visits the grandmother who immediately suspects the worst. Molly
questions the priest as to whether it is about her daughters or grandchildren. The priest hesitantly
discontinues and calms Molly down. In spite of the priest clearing Molly of any malignant thoughts,
throughout the story Molly feels as if her day is off, she simply believes people in her community
are becoming aware of her newfound interest in technology, however; shortly after her trip to the

The Poem ' Barbie Doll ' By Marge Piercy
Through the poem "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy we see how much words can affect someone,
especially the youth. By always being told that you are not good enough, you are going to take that
one of two ways. One you may give in and give up, or you will decide to toughen up. No matter
how hard you try, you will never be fully accepted until you die. There will always be someone who
wants you to change something about yourself, in order for you to be "better." If we do not take a
stand for who we are and for the things we believe in, are we really living a life worth living? In the
poem "Barbie Doll," we see the main character try and try to change who she is so that she can be
accepted by society. "Exercise, diet, smile and wheedle/ Her good nature wore out"(14–15), all the
things she did to become skinnier, did not make her happy. They made her depressed because of no
matter how hard she tried or what she did, she was never good enough. She soon lost the hope and
drive to become like everyone else, and she gave up. Never give up, because when you give up, just
like the girl in "Barbie Doll" did, that is when society wins. We all have a choice to make in our own
lives, do we live the way society wants us to live, or do we live a life that we want to live. I
struggled with that choice for the longest of times. It all started when I was about three years old
when I first started to think about the priesthood. I have to give a lot of credit to my parents, because

Essay on First Confession
Mrs. Ryan and the Priest In Frank O'Connor's story "First Confession", Mrs. Ryan and the priest are
different. Mrs. Ryan and the priest approach Jackie differently and have different affects on him.
Mrs. Ryan makes Jackie feel like a sinner in her approach to him. She teaches him how to examine
his heart by asking himself a few questions, "Did we take the name of the Lord, our God in Vain?
Did we honor our father and mother? Did we love our neighbors as ourselves? Did we covet our
neighbors goods?"(614). This made Jackie feel like he is a sinner because he feels that he was not
honoring his grandmother and feels that he coveted Nora's penny she got every week from their

Jackie becomes so scared that he starts to think, "...I would make a bad confession and then die in
the night and be continually coming back and burning people's furniture" (616). The priest uses an
approach of understanding. He understands Jackie's thought of being a sinner, for instance, he tells
Jackie that there are a lot of people he would like to go after with a bread knife as well. This had to
make Jackie feel better about not being a sinner because the priest had thought the same thing as he
had. For Jackie says that he tried to kill his grandmother and Nora and the priest says, "...there's a lot
of people I'd like to do the same to..."(618). The priest affects Jackie by comforting him. When the
priest catches Nora clipping Jackie across the ear and yelled at her for doing this, Jackie feels
comforted because no one had ever defended him against her before. The priest also comforts him
by telling Jackie, "...wait now until I'm finished with the old ones."(617). Jackie now feels special
because the priest is going to take time with him. The priest comforts Jackie to where he is not
scared of confession anymore. Jackie says, "The relief of it was really enormous."(617). Between
Mrs. Ryan and the priest, the method the priest uses works better than Mrs. Ryan's does. Teaching
people religion by scaring them does not work because someone is not going to want to

Tested in Every Way
Tested in Every Way: the Catholic Priesthood in Today's Church, written by Christopher Ruddy, is a
report and at the same time a reflection on the Seventh Annual Cardinal Bernardin Conference
which was held in the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX in 2003 . Ruddy reports the
voices of academic and pastoral expertise sharing about the challenges and the identity of being a
priest. Besides of giving a report, the book opens up and finishes with the Ruddy's insightful
reflections.
Ruddy opens up with an "examination of the cultural and ecclesiological contexts of the priesthood
in today's church (13)". In the first chapter of the book Ruddy mentions three challenges the church
and priest are facing today: popular skepticism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What people expect from us is to be witnesses of living faith that is rooted in prayer and scripture
(52). Ruddy's brings into consideration what Paul VI said in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii
Nuntiandi that: "modern man listens to witnesses more than to teachers, and if he does not listen to
teachers, it is because they are witnesses."
One thing that challenges me is that Americans expect from me to be a good preacher. The shortage
of priesthood in the United States has led some communities to be without pastors. Bishops, in
trying to give solution to the problems, have relayed on religious congregations whose members are
from other cultures. If local priest have difficulties in preaching, the seminarians from other cultures
will find it more difficult. One mayor factor is that those missionaries often lack ways to express
themselves because of their limited language. Missionaries from other cultures need to give opinions
on the matter. It is true that we are ministering in the United States and that we need to put all our
effort to share the Word of God with clarity, but people need to see our struggles when dealing in a
second language. I am sure that if we come into dialogue with American people, we, missionaries
from other cultures, can find the support and help to improve our preaching. This is another aspect
that Christopher Ruddy needs to reflect on.
Since I entered the seminary, I have questioned my

How Do You Think the Problem of Priestless Parishs Should...
Parishes are a common practice in the Catholic Church. They are a division of a diocese which has
its own church and members of the clergy. A parish priest is appointed and entrusted with the
spiritual care of his parishioners. In 2008, 49,631 parishes in the world had no resident priest or

great difficulties for people. The role of a priest within a parish is vital; a priest is someone who is

access to each of the seven sacraments.

Their celibacy expresses their complete and total identification with Christ and their commitment to

Celibacy is a big sacrifice for anyone to undertake. Married life too has sacrifices – very different
sacrifices; however there is no value in saying one is more of a sacrifice than another. Those in a
marriage have many sacrifices that may go unrecognized because they are considered "normal." For
instance, married couples have a commitment to their partners to be faithful, honest, and dedicated
to making the relationship successful. For those with children, the commitments and responsibilities
are even greater.
There are many cultures around the world that do not expect clergy celibacy (Daly, 2009) including
Christian denominations who allow ministers/priests to marry. These Churches demonstrate how
marriage is compatible with the priestly life. These churches present a great example of how familial
responsibilities are compatible with religious commitments. A study of married Evangelical

dimensions of religiosity or commitments to the parish between the celibate and married clergymen

Celibacy in the Ministry of the Catholic Church
Introduction
The church has a large influence over the people, from the ancient times up until our modern age.
The church, as we know it, is composed of various members who all contribute to fulfill a holy
calling, and one of its constituents, who work closely with the public, are the priests. They make up
the embodiment of the Catholic Church, their very existence is what makes the church operate as it
is, meaning that they have an essential role to the Catholic system. With this in mind, priests
represent the very image of the church so issues associated with the priests are also identified in
relation to the church. As of now, there have already been various matters concerning the conduct of
priests instigated by society. One of these said issues are
Celibacy is the act of abstinence from marriage implicitly or explicitly made, for a more immaculate
devotion to chastity, by all those who are a member of the Holy Order. Priestly celibacy has been
observed by the Church for centuries with a high recognition, and retains its value undiminished
even in our time when the outlook of men and the state of the world have undergone such profound
changes. Amid the modern stirrings of opinion, a predisposition has been expressed, to ask the
Church to reconsider this specific convention. It is said that in the world of our time the observance
of celibacy has come to be difficult or even impossible. Necessity

How do Mrs. Ryan and the priest influence Jackie's attitude to religion?
"First Confession" is the story of how Jackie, a seven year old boy, makes his first confession before
his first communion. The story takes place in Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century and is
based on O'Connor's own childhood. It is interesting to see how two opposite characters, Mrs. Ryan

helps him to overcome this fear.

Jackies second link to religion was the priest with whom he made his first confession. Jackie
immediately likes the priest as he defends him from his sister Nora the moment he meets him. After
calling Nora a "vixen" and Jackie a "poor man" and "big hefty fellow", Jackie thinks he is
"intelligent above ordinary", and immediately tells him his major sin. Although it takes him a while
to react, the priest seems to understand Jackie when he's told that he planned to kill his grandmother

and really comfortable, to the extent of being sorry of having to leave. He thought he was "the most
interesting character he'd ever met in the religious line", and leaves the church happily and with no
fear of returning.
Although both characters want to obtain the same

Spotlight Reflection
Recently in Journalism class, we watched the movie titled Spotlight which was based on the story of
the 87 priest molestation cases that occurred in Boston alone. This movie followed a team of
Journalists, the Spotlight Team, who worked for the Boston Globe. This team tracked down 87
molester priests and cultivated a story to bring attention to the issue. While there were a lot of
important concepts highlighted in this movie, the three main concepts of the film were on why this
issue has been happening for such an exaggerated period of time, preposterous events can occur in
the most unexpected places and that vulnerable people are effortlessly taken advantage of. The
world let these incidents go on for too long. For years, the priests not just in these Boston churches,
but around the globe had been performing inappropriate acts on powerless children in their
churches. It was even made known that these churches were fully aware of these events and masked
the truth from their communities. The church essentially wanted so desperately to believe that it was
a minor flaw in the system. In reality, it was happening in an exuberant amount of religious areas. It
is partially based on the statement that "no one wants to cuff a priest" because they feel that in a
way, it would make them look atrocious.
To keep muted on these events, people were put under restraint by their own family and friends.
They were told not to speak out about their molestation cases. The belief in the

Analysis of Behind Grandma's House
In the poem "Behind Grandma's House", Gary Soto writes about an experience he had as a young
boy. He speaks of himself as being a nerdy Spanish boy who wants attention. He screams out for
attention by acting out in negative ways. Most know, to bring attention to one's self, one can acquire
it by acting negatively or positively, but negative attention brings punishment. Soto obtains his
grandmothers attention at the end of the poem, but he may have regretted it. Gary Soto's "Behind
Grandma's House" is a 1952 free verse poem that uses imagery to suggest the speaker's perspective
of the story. From the beginning of the poem, Soto depicts himself as a ten year old who wanted
attention. He also depicts the era by which the setting of the poem is written. He states, "At ten I
wanted fame", the word "fame" standing for his intense need for attention (1). In the next line he
said, "I had a comb / And two Coke bottles, a tube of Bryl–cream" (1–2). By this he meant, he had
thick glasses and slicked back hair, and for that era, thick glasses were for nerds, and the slicked
back hair was the fashion in the 1950's. In addition, a slang word in the 1950's was "Daddy–O", who
by which Soto refers to a priest (17). He states, '"No way / Daddy–O' to an imaginary priest" (16–
17). Since Soto uses the word priest, and not pastor or reverend, this indicates the person for whom
he imagined calling "Daddy–O" was a Catholic male (17). Soto uses the word "Chale" toward the
imaginary priest, which

Father Jack Flaherty Analysis

  • 1. Father Jack Flaherty Analysis A Saint in the Making: Father Jack Flaherty Priests can help you navigate your way through life because God's voice shines through them. Father Jack Flaherty is one of the most compassionate and driven priest I have ever met. He goes from parish to parish spreading God's love to everyone in need and goes above and beyond in making sure that everyone feels welcomed wherever they go. Due to his large time commitment, dedication to God and his parishioners, and his exemplary exhibition of heroic qualities, Father Jack is a hero One important aspect of Father Jack's life that makes him a hero is the large amount of time he commits to being a priest. Father Jack knew his calling was the priesthood, but he had no idea how much schooling went into it. According to Study.com, when becoming a priest men must go through three specific steps. First, they must earn a bachelor's degree in the fields of either philosophy, religious studies, or English ("Become a Catholic Priest: Step–by–Step Career Guide"). Then after careful reflection on their vocation, they need to study at a seminary, classes that prepare them for the priesthood by practicing preaching or studying church history by using their critical–thinking skills ("Become a Catholic Priest: Step–by–Step Career Guide"). Lastly, they must become ordained, when the future priest receives holy orders, a sacrament, from another priest, during a Mass or a celebration of their own ("Become a Catholic Priest: Step–by–Step Career ... • 3. Essay on Confirmation in the Catholic Church Confirmation in the Catholic Church Confirmation is a Catholic sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of Initiation for Catholics and a Sacrament of faith in God's fidelity to us Confirmation is the moment when two things are confirmed. The candidate confirms his/her faith in Christ and takes full responsibility for that faith and for membership of the community of faith, which we call the "church". God, through the Bishop, confirms God's claim on the candidate's life. Whatever happens at confirmation, the moment for those who are confirmed is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Confirmation complements the symbols of Baptism. The historical origins of the symbols of Confirmation are many and diverse. One source of the rituals for the Sacrament of Confirmation can be found in the bathing customs of the Roman Empire. The water ritual (Baptism) came to mean the washing away of sin, and the oil ritual (Confirmation) was interpreted to mean the sweet fragrance of God's presence: sanctifying grace. In the same way God's grace fills us with redemption and salvation. This grace, this presence of God in us, is the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is the Sacrament of the Holy Spirit. Anointing can mean many things. From ancient times, oil has been a symbol of strength, healing and agility. For Jews, our ancestors in the faith, oil is the sign of God appointing someone to be a priest, prophet and king. Christians believe that Jesus of Nazareth was this anointed one. As "Christ" means "anointed," we call ourselves "Christians" because we are the anointed ones, the "Oiled People," so to speak. The Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist initiate us into that "oiled" community, the community anointed to continue the vocation of the Messiah, the Christ. At Baptism, the priest lays his hand on those to be baptised and marks them with the sign of the cross. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the priest lays his hands on the head of the ... He is a real character, who is thought to be based upon Tomas Garride Canabal. He is a representative of the government. The nameless lieutenant is fervently anti–clerical and believes that the church preaches false promises to the people. The lieutenant is described as having a very strong and resolute temperament. As a disciplined man of principles, he is always sure of his decisions, he never hesitates and he has self–respect. He reveals the dangers of the cold idealism. So, he is associated with the "power" of the novel's title while the priest is associated with the "Glory". Through his character, Greene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Greene satires the church through the behavior of the whisky priest; he is a man with a shameful past full of sins. He has illegitimate child and has a lust of drinking brandy. So, he is a bad image as a representative of God on the earth. Greene's satire to the government is portrayed by the lieutenant who suffers from excessive idealism and has dominated desire to eradicate all the church men from the world. Greene satires the conflict between each other. So, the long conflict between the whisky priest and the lieutenant is a symbolic representation of the conflict between church and government. "Go and find it yourself on the rubbish–tip then" (The Power and the Glory 121), rubbish–tip is symbolic of the inevitability of sin and corruption. Greene uses flashback to compare between the past and the present of the priest. • 7. Summary On Women 's Decline Chapter 8 Summary of Women's Decline as Clergy Due to the Early Church Fathers "God has ordained female pastors from eternity past. That part is not a problem for God. The problem is with us, with the church. We are slow in binding and loosing on earth what God has already bound and loosed in heaven" (Mat 16:19; 18:18; Dr. Martin Hanna). At the Council of Nicaea, 325, bishops were given power of veto over who could become bishops in their respective areas. This in turn accelerated the concentration of their authority.98 By 354, the church fathers appear to take on a duel personality when it came to women serving in the church. On one side, women were inferior if they were married. On the other side, unmarried women (virgins) could possess autonomy and equality with men. However, this only pertained to spiritual equality and did not carry over to social structure.21 Under the rule of Constantine the Great, increased centralization of religious authority expanded the wealth and prestige of the men who administrated cleric authority.99 In addition, the emperor's authority became involved in the development of the church and resulted in the church being involved in high political decisions. This action furthered the influence of the of the emperor over the election of bishops and church policy. These developments placed church officials in the position of having to compete for the emperor's favor.99 It was decided at the Council of Laodicea, 354, that female ... Compare And Contrast Between Tides And Between Tides Fang culture, Tío Abeso emphasizes that though they do not read books to learn their culture, "[they] know [their] tradition because the eldest member passes it on to the young so that when he too is old, he will in turn impart the tradition to his young" (Ndongo 92). Ndongo demonstrates through this novel that education can take more than one form, and though it differs from Western ideals, it still serves as a uniting force amongst the tribe. Similarly, Pierre is guided by his grandmother throughout childhood. When speaking with the Colonel, Pierre hears his grandmother's voice in his head speaking about shikwembu, and compares the description with the Colonel (Mudimbe 52). In both of these novels, education is exemplified in ways other than ancestral teachings. In Between Tides, Pierre receives an education starting from elementary school. We learn that in addition to his schooling to become a priest, he studied canon law. In Shadows of Your Black Memory, the Spaniards used education as a tool to colonize the Fang people, teaching them to recognize they should be grateful that they had been saved and to glorify their Spanish ancestors: "...when Don Ramón asked you what you were, your little voice stood out clearly: all of us together are Spaniards by the grace of God! In the early stages of his life, Romero had entered a boarding school for priests at the age of thirteen. Then he went to the national boarding school in San Salvador. He finished his studies at the Gregorian University in Rome, and was appointed a priest in Rome in 1942. This film was created to depict Óscar Romero's organizing peaceful protests against a violent military regime, as well as his death. Óscar Romero used his voice of power in the Church and in the country to speak up for the poor. When important political figures in the country told him to be quiet and to stop speaking out against these injustices, he refused, often putting his own body in between his people and their perpetrators. His defense of the Salvadoran people was very effective in protecting them from the senseless violence and oppression by the Salvadoran government. He was truly a hero. He advocated human rights without the use of violence or harm to others, he used his voice to bring justice to the citizens of El Salvador. He should be remembered as a strong–willed advocate. Óscar Romero did not give up, "'As a Christian,' he remarked on one such occasion, 'I do not believe in death without resurrection. • 15. Empowerment For Ministry Among The Philippines Introduction An issue many pastors face today is the definitive difference between a called professional clergy and a called laity and the necessary responsibilities for the empowerment of laity within their specific missional context. This issue of empowerment for ministry among the laity has long been a problem debated within the ranks of church leadership and the field of practical theology. The average believer is faced with the challenge of developing a biblical understanding of the "call of God" that is received from God for the fulfillment of their ministry, which is necessary to form a clear understanding of the role of the laity within the church in light of the professional clergy. This paper will focus upon the biblical understanding of the "priesthood of all believers," as the laos, or people of God and the role of the professional clergy to equip, empower and encourage laity to flourish in the work in which God has called them to do. The development of the historical views of lay ministry within the local church is also a necessary component that will be addressed in dealing with this dilemma. This paper will also seek to present biblical narratives presenting the importance of the role of both a called clergy and a called laity for the successful continuation of a biblical model of the church within today's society. In Frank O'Connor's short story "The First Confession", Jackie, the main character, learns a lesson he'll always remember. After Jackie's first confession, he could now be confident that he was not such a sinner, and that Nora, his sister, was wrong. While people focused on Jackie's own wrong doings, they weren't focusing on their own wrong actions. Sometimes people's ignorance can bring them into a whole different reality. Jackie was a very honest and loyal man. "Nora, my sister, just sucked up to the old woman for the penny she got every Friday out of the old–age pension, a thing I could not do. • 19. The Theology And Practice Of Pastoral Care Essay The Protestant Reformation indicated that a human can "connect to God and can do so without the aid of a priest." The ecclesiology behind this is basically what aids me in my ministry. Peterson, in his book Essential Church, explains "the primary affirmation is not that each person is his or her own priest but that each Christian can be a priest, advocate, intercessor, and evangelist to others." William Willimon, Pastor: the Theology and Practice of Ordained Ministry, highlights a variety of ways in which a pastor functions. In this paper, I am going to explain the ways in which my current ministry setting connects with the concept of priest as pastor in relation to worship and the connect and context of pastoral care while teaching others that they are able to accomplish the same task. Willimon explains that "all of the pastor's sheepherding takes its purpose and content from the pastor's leadership of worship." Willimon indicates several points in which I agree with and a few that I struggle with. As a pastor, we assume a responsibility for the people who attend the church. With that responsibility, we also are responsible "to God for the flock." That responsibility is not to be taken lightly. It is through the worship that pastors have an incredible opportunity to tough the life of many souls. Although it is viewed by many as the pastor touching the souls; it is truly God touching the souls and utilizing the pastor as the vehicle. If the question is "who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before its theatrical effectiveness in the play the legend is incorporated from Kannada writer, T.R. Subbanna's (Knows as TaRaSu) novel, Hamsageethe (Swan Song) Published in 1952. The title of the novel literally means the 'swan song' of the protagonist, Venkatasubbayya whom Subbanna inserts in the tale of Veeranna, the archaka of the Hidambeshwara temple. About the legend narrated in Subbanna's version Aparna Bhargava Dharwadker writes in the 'Introduction" to his collected Play (Vol.II): The married priest has passionately in love with a mistress to whom he takes the offering form the temple after the evening prayers. One day the palegar (chieftain) discovers a hair in the prasada and demands and explanation from Veerganna, who claims that the hair belongs to god. Challenged by the chieftain to prove the truth of this claim, the priest in turn challenges god to display hair or accepts his head in punishment, and enters a meditative trance to the accompaniment of Venkatasubbayya's song. When the chieftain arrives the next day to expose Veeranna's lie, the Shivalinga has indeed sprouted long silken hair, and when (urged by the singer) he pulls out a tuft to test its authenticity, blood begins to ooze from the crown of the lingam. overwhelmed by a sense of sin at having injured the deity, Veeranna beheads himself in eh sanctum (xxxi). • 23. Literary Theme Of Self Identity Essay In Harper Lee 's To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee writes, "before I can live with other folks I 've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn 't abide by majority rule is a person 's conscience (Lee, 108)." As displayed in To Kill a Mockingbird and many others, the literary theme of self–identity coupled with coming of age has been a long running one in the history of literature. Certainly, we find this theme in novels such as Between Tides and Shadows of Your Black Memory, respectively. The development of character and self–identity is vital in the analysis of each protagonist. Between Tides follows Pierre Landu, a black Catholic Priest and revolutionist, on a journey to right his wrongs through rigorous self–examination. Pierre, having rejected his African ancestry during adolescence, in attempts to integrate into the Catholic Priesthood finds himself dissatisfied with the priesthood during his adult years. In attempts to reconnect to his cultural roots he joins a revolutionist movement to deconstruct colonialism in his African nation. Through growth and the tumultuous discovery of self, Pierre recognizes that there is no easy resolution in rediscovering himself or Africa. Similarly, Shadows of Your Black Memory, is largely about a young boy 's journey into adulthood. Shadows is retold through the memory of the adult version of the young boy. Unlike Pierre, the Narrator, who is never a given a name is strikingly aware of the cultural and social parallels in which his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Silence, By Shusaku Endo One common theme between good and bad priests is that the vocation they were called to never seems to completely leave them. This is a common theme in Silence, by Shusaku Endo. In the beginning of the novel, the reader discovers that Ferreiera apostatized, giving up not only his roles as a priest but his faith in God as well. Although Ferreira abandoned the priesthood and gave up shepherding the few Catholics of Japan, he still continues "to be useful to others, [which] was the one wish and the only dream of one who had dedicated himself to the priesthood" . However, once he is reunited with Sebastian, "there flashed into his eyes a servile smile and momentary shame". Here Ferreiera feels as though he has failed Sebastian because if he had not apostatized, Sebastian, acting as a good priest, would never have gone to Japan to save him. Father Sebastian Rodrigues behaves as a good priest throughout the majority of the novel. He always remains humble and recognizes that he is an imperfect human being, claiming, "I did not come here to condemn you. I am not here as your judge" . He recognizes that God is the only judge and although he seems like "the voice crying in the wilderness", Rodriguez ministers to all Japanese Christians by educating, performing the sacraments, and protecting his parishioners, giving them "a human warmth they never previously knew". Advised by his doctor to withdraw from administrative work, he immediately set about a new career as a writer and philosopher. Though only 54 years old at the time he wrote the book, his experience as a priest had been unusual. He worked with teenage gangs in New York, and in the local mining area of Pennsylvania. He taught in schools most of his life, and worked in parishes at the same time. He was very intelligent and almost everyone liked him. Mainly he talked about religion, the religion that Jesus taught, a religion of freedom and without authority. Many people agreed with him, but a few strongly disagreed: some priests, pastors, bishops and clergy in general. As a result of this disagreement, things became very difficult for Joshua. He had to go to Rome to a congregation of bishops for a proceeding against him. He told the bishops what he believed. After the proceeding he simply went away, without saying anything to anybody. The bishops voted for censure. The bishops agreed that Joshua showed a hostile attitude towards authority, that his criticism lacked understanding of the realities of life and the authority of Christ on earth. Joshua had to cease talking about these matters to the faithful, under penalty of further censure. But Joshua had disappeared already. His mission was over, so he went ... • 29. Essay on The Debate Over Women in the Catholic Church The Debate Over Women in the Catholic Church The question of the ordination of women to the priesthood has moved to the forefront of theological controversy in recent years, prompting a swamping of books, and religious opinions. This controversial issue stems not only from the renewed interest of the Catholic Church in the nature of its priesthood, but also, and perhaps predominantly, from the efforts of women to achieve a new and deeper understanding of their religion. The question, should women be ordained as ministers in the church immediately implies many questions. What difference could female priests make to the church? Did Jesus allow for women to be priests? What has been the result of many centuries of male priesthood? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is ample evidence in Scripture for women's leadership in the early church. Such leadership became increasingly prohibited as the church became a public institution, as it was not considered proper for women to hold leadership positions in public places. As the world has come to see the equality of women holding leadership positions in the civil public world; so it would be right for them to be church leaders today. This would signal the church's real belief in the equality of women and men. The Old Testament states on many occasions that women are not allowed to be priests. These statements are based on the fact that men were born first therefore they are automatically capable of doing a better job. The Old Testament tends to hold a very biased opinion in that they did not even state that women participated in church life. The New Testament does, however, give a precedent for the ordination of deaconesses (I Tim. 3:8– 11, Rom. 16:1). The Bible states that Aquila and Priscilla, who served under Paul's administration, were deacon and deaconess. It also goes on to explain the importance of the role of women in the church and the fact that they were major contributors to the church community and in the way that the church was run. Why then, in certain parts of the Bible, does it state that women held no importance in the church when obviously they were contributors. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One item that many Catholics are surprised to learn is that the tradition of priests and other clergy members remaining celibate has not always been present in the church. There are many Catholics, in and out of the clergy, who believe that priests should have the ability to get married and raise a family. In fact, priestly celibacy is not a church law, but, as Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone says it is a "positive tradition," and not "untouchable" (France–Pressez). It seems like a simple decision for the church to make: Make celibacy optional, recruit much– needed new priests. A few of the branches of the Catholic Church in Eastern Europe allow their priests to be married. The Vatican allows the marriages to keep church members from converting to Orthodox Christianity, the dominant religion in that part of the world. A recent article in The New York Times profiles Reverend Yuriy Volovetskiy, the priest at a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Volovetskiy is married and has six children. He says that being married helps him better relate to his parishioners. He says having children has helped him become a part of society. It is easier for him to explain things to his parish if he has actually lived through them. Volovetskiy also says that celibacy is unnatural, and that no one can escape from having a sexual life (Levy). Many priests, after taking the vow of celibacy, discover that they can't suppress their sexual feelings towards others. Many priests have secret relationships that they hide from their parish. • 35. Literary Analysis Of John O 'Connor'sFirst Confession' Will there ever be an object or idea that can reverse a "mistake"? As humans have evolved, there have been different notions created on the consequences of doing certain activities or actions. While the preceding is important to take into mind, does it always have to be so serious? Any individual who grows up does either childish actions or just simple mistakes. O'Connor shows how the formality of this can be taken to an extreme point with the story of Jackie. In "First Confession" he creates a humorous tone with the utilization of figurative language and characterization. To begin with, "First Confession" holds a strong message, but it holds it with a touch of humor. With this story being told from a reflective point of view, it really shows the comical sides of the story. Most of us have those stories that as we reflect on them now, can be very funny; the same was for Jackie. Jackie wrote about his first confession, which was probably from a few years back and now he highlights the funny parts of them. For example, the rivalry between Nora, his sister, and him. A rivalry which then seemed very serious for Jackie, was not that serious in reality. As well, his grandmother's arrival was so bad for him then that he even plotted her murder. The humorous side of this story is reflected mainly in his conversation with the priest. The priest tells him, "Between ourselves, there's a lot of people I'd like to do the same to, but I'd never have the nerve." By breaking this line of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Numbers 18 the Most High says, speaking about the priesthood, that it is an eternal covenant with Aaron and the Levites that these are the duties that he and they have. What 's clear here is no one from the Davidic line in the tribe of Judah could ever bring an incense offering into mikdash ha– kodesh(the holy of holies) in the Temple Lev 16:12–13. There can never be a high priest from the house of David. The priesthood belongs to Aaron, his sons and the Levites forever. This next point must be addressed. These are eternal covenants, they can not be broken, in fact, the Most High calls it a salt covenant. Why a salt covenant? Because salt never spoils, it never degrades. • 39. Contradiction In The Wife Of Bath, By Hafez And The... In the poems by Hafez and The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, religion and religious institutions are critiqued for the contradictions they pose to the people that they influence. Often, what a religion preaches runs opposite to how those that practice the religion tend to behave. This opposition to dogma is often not malicious and derives from temptations being irresistible to the average human being. However, sometimes the contradictions inside a religion and its institutions are harmful or so puzzling that they deserve to be called out and examined for their absurdity. In the poems by Hafez, this contradiction is the supposedly holy priests being drunkards while still preaching against debauchery; in The Canterbury Tales, the Christian insistence of virginity in women is critiqued for its impossibility, the Wife of Bath is used to show the bias Christianity has against women in regards to marriage, and the greediness of the church is exposed. These authors show that religion is an invention of humankind that falls prey to logical fallacies and vices just like its creators. The poems by Hafez reveal the contradiction of priests speaking out against alcohol while simultaneously indulging in its pleasures. Alcohol can be anything from the blood of a savior to a shunned beverage only consumed by devils in religion. For Hafez, a Muslim, the priests or mullahs of his day and age preach lengthy sermons in condemnation of wine and drinking. Hafez shows in the text that these same holy men partake in alcohol just as much as they crusade against it. Hafez provides evidence for this by saying, "Brother believers, whatever shall we do? The priest left the mosque for the tavern yesterday! How can the believers turn to Mecca to pray? When our Mullah turns to the tavern instead?!" (Hafez 11). Hafez hyperbolically states that he will no longer be able to turn to Mecca to pray due to the falsehoods of the priest. The priest is the representative of the religion of Islam and its institutions. Hafez is incredulous because he cannot put faith in priests and what they preach if they blatantly go against their own teachings. Although all of the characters in this story commit various sins, the sins of Romuald are the sins primarily focused on. This sinning of Romauld is very unique in that he is a ordained priest who should be one of the last people to commit these sins. It is this reason that makes the story what it is and draws the readers in initially. The first sin that the reader witnesses is during Romauld's ordainment ceremony. The first of these reasons is the fact that a celibate priest is having these sexual attractions towards a woman. A priest, one of the holiest men of God should be able to control his ungodly desires if anyone can. The second reason for this disturbance is the face that he is lusting over the body of a dead woman. After she is found not to be dead, Romauld continuously wonders what would have happened if he was not a priest. Would they be lovers? Would they be married? Or would they even be together at all? However, Hemingway presented to us his story, without using exquisite words or elongated sentences. His writing was direct and minimal, but also precise. The author allowed us to create our own environment, by playing off common experiences in everyday life. By doing that he produced an atmosphere that can easily be fashioned and manipulated by the reader in order to create a relatable surrounding. Hemingway uses a neutral to informal diction in his story. As mentioned earlier the church is a pillar in Ireland society, meaning priest are held in high regards, they are noble men who can do no wrong, and they are the individuals within their communities where its members come not only come to for reassurance, spiritual guidance, but also to confess their sins so they can be free of any of their wrong doings. Molly's son was a priest who shattered this holy image. Frank's mother can be quoted saying, "it is nice having a son a priest who's very holy. He's one of the old–school. But I can say what I like to you". Throughout the story there is this sort of anticipation, and it begins when Father Greenwood abnormally visits the grandmother who immediately suspects the worst. Molly questions the priest as to whether it is about her daughters or grandchildren. The priest hesitantly discontinues and calms Molly down. In spite of the priest clearing Molly of any malignant thoughts, throughout the story Molly feels as if her day is off, she simply believes people in her community are becoming aware of her newfound interest in technology, however; shortly after her trip to the ... • 57. The Poem ' Barbie Doll ' By Marge Piercy Through the poem "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy we see how much words can affect someone, especially the youth. By always being told that you are not good enough, you are going to take that one of two ways. One you may give in and give up, or you will decide to toughen up. No matter how hard you try, you will never be fully accepted until you die. There will always be someone who wants you to change something about yourself, in order for you to be "better." If we do not take a stand for who we are and for the things we believe in, are we really living a life worth living? In the poem "Barbie Doll," we see the main character try and try to change who she is so that she can be accepted by society. "Exercise, diet, smile and wheedle/ Her good nature wore out"(14–15), all the things she did to become skinnier, did not make her happy. They made her depressed because of no matter how hard she tried or what she did, she was never good enough. She soon lost the hope and drive to become like everyone else, and she gave up. Never give up, because when you give up, just like the girl in "Barbie Doll" did, that is when society wins. We all have a choice to make in our own lives, do we live the way society wants us to live, or do we live a life that we want to live. I struggled with that choice for the longest of times. It all started when I was about three years old when I first started to think about the priesthood. I have to give a lot of credit to my parents, because when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Essay on First Confession Mrs. Ryan and the Priest In Frank O'Connor's story "First Confession", Mrs. Ryan and the priest are different. Mrs. Ryan and the priest approach Jackie differently and have different affects on him. Mrs. Ryan makes Jackie feel like a sinner in her approach to him. She teaches him how to examine his heart by asking himself a few questions, "Did we take the name of the Lord, our God in Vain? Did we honor our father and mother? Did we love our neighbors as ourselves? Did we covet our neighbors goods?"(614). This made Jackie feel like he is a sinner because he feels that he was not honoring his grandmother and feels that he coveted Nora's penny she got every week from their grandmother. Mrs. Ryan affects Jackie by making him feel that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jackie becomes so scared that he starts to think, "...I would make a bad confession and then die in the night and be continually coming back and burning people's furniture" (616). The priest uses an approach of understanding. He understands Jackie's thought of being a sinner, for instance, he tells Jackie that there are a lot of people he would like to go after with a bread knife as well. This had to make Jackie feel better about not being a sinner because the priest had thought the same thing as he had. For Jackie says that he tried to kill his grandmother and Nora and the priest says, "...there's a lot of people I'd like to do the same to..."(618). The priest affects Jackie by comforting him. When the priest catches Nora clipping Jackie across the ear and yelled at her for doing this, Jackie feels comforted because no one had ever defended him against her before. The priest also comforts him by telling Jackie, "...wait now until I'm finished with the old ones."(617). Jackie now feels special because the priest is going to take time with him. The priest comforts Jackie to where he is not scared of confession anymore. Jackie says, "The relief of it was really enormous."(617). Between Mrs. Ryan and the priest, the method the priest uses works better than Mrs. Ryan's does. Teaching people religion by scaring them does not work because someone is not going to want to ... Tested in Every Way Tested in Every Way: the Catholic Priesthood in Today's Church, written by Christopher Ruddy, is a report and at the same time a reflection on the Seventh Annual Cardinal Bernardin Conference which was held in the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX in 2003 . Ruddy reports the voices of academic and pastoral expertise sharing about the challenges and the identity of being a priest. Besides of giving a report, the book opens up and finishes with the Ruddy's insightful reflections. Ruddy opens up with an "examination of the cultural and ecclesiological contexts of the priesthood in today's church (13)". In the first chapter of the book Ruddy mentions three challenges the church and priest are facing today: popular skepticism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What people expect from us is to be witnesses of living faith that is rooted in prayer and scripture (52). Ruddy's brings into consideration what Paul VI said in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi that: "modern man listens to witnesses more than to teachers, and if he does not listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses." One thing that challenges me is that Americans expect from me to be a good preacher. The shortage of priesthood in the United States has led some communities to be without pastors. Bishops, in trying to give solution to the problems, have relayed on religious congregations whose members are from other cultures. If local priest have difficulties in preaching, the seminarians from other cultures will find it more difficult. One mayor factor is that those missionaries often lack ways to express themselves because of their limited language. Missionaries from other cultures need to give opinions on the matter. It is true that we are ministering in the United States and that we need to put all our effort to share the Word of God with clarity, but people need to see our struggles when dealing in a second language. I am sure that if we come into dialogue with American people, we, missionaries from other cultures, can find the support and help to improve our preaching. This is another aspect that Christopher Ruddy needs to reflect on. Since I entered the seminary, I have questioned my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. How Do You Think the Problem of Priestless Parishs Should... Parishes are a common practice in the Catholic Church. They are a division of a diocese which has its own church and members of the clergy. A parish priest is appointed and entrusted with the spiritual care of his parishioners. In 2008, 49,631 parishes in the world had no resident priest or pastor (CARA services. Frequently requested Church statistics). Parishes without a priest can cause great difficulties for people. The role of a priest within a parish is vital; a priest is someone who is there for the sick and the dying, a shoulder to cry in times of need and a priest allows parishioners access to each of the seven sacraments. Surely this preparation phase is enough time for a priest to either see the benefit in celibacy or lack there off for them as an individual. Celibacy is a big sacrifice for anyone to undertake. Married life too has sacrifices – very different sacrifices; however there is no value in saying one is more of a sacrifice than another. Those in a marriage have many sacrifices that may go unrecognized because they are considered "normal." For instance, married couples have a commitment to their partners to be faithful, honest, and dedicated to making the relationship successful. For those with children, the commitments and responsibilities are even greater. There are many cultures around the world that do not expect clergy celibacy (Daly, 2009) including Christian denominations who allow ministers/priests to marry. These Churches demonstrate how marriage is compatible with the priestly life. These churches present a great example of how familial responsibilities are compatible with religious commitments. A study of married Evangelical ministers and Roman Catholic priests revealed that there were no significant differences in dimensions of religiosity or commitments to the parish between the celibate and married clergymen (Swenson, 1998). • 67. Celibacy in the Ministry of the Catholic Church Introduction The church has a large influence over the people, from the ancient times up until our modern age. The church, as we know it, is composed of various members who all contribute to fulfill a holy calling, and one of its constituents, who work closely with the public, are the priests. They make up the embodiment of the Catholic Church, their very existence is what makes the church operate as it is, meaning that they have an essential role to the Catholic system. With this in mind, priests represent the very image of the church so issues associated with the priests are also identified in relation to the church. As of now, there have already been various matters concerning the conduct of priests instigated by society. One of these said issues are Celibacy is the act of abstinence from marriage implicitly or explicitly made, for a more immaculate devotion to chastity, by all those who are a member of the Holy Order. Priestly celibacy has been observed by the Church for centuries with a high recognition, and retains its value undiminished even in our time when the outlook of men and the state of the world have undergone such profound changes. Amid the modern stirrings of opinion, a predisposition has been expressed, to ask the Church to reconsider this specific convention. It is said that in the world of our time the observance of celibacy has come to be difficult or even impossible. Necessity One of the main reasons why it is necessary is because everyone is ... • 71. Mrs. Ryan and the Priest Influence Jackie's Attitude To... How do Mrs. Ryan and the priest influence Jackie's attitude to religion? "First Confession" is the story of how Jackie, a seven year old boy, makes his first confession before his first communion. The story takes place in Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century and is based on O'Connor's own childhood. It is interesting to see how two opposite characters, Mrs. Ryan and the priest, can influence so much the kid's thoughts: Mrs. Ryan instills him fear while the priest helps him to overcome this fear. Mrs. Ryan is the women encharged of preparing Jackie and his class–mates to take their first communion. She has to get them closer to God and turn them into good Catholics. Jackie immediately likes the priest as he defends him from his sister Nora the moment he meets him. Although it takes him a while to react, the priest seems to understand Jackie when he's told that he planned to kill his grandmother with a kitchen knife, and shows interest in the kids' plans. This makes Jackie feel close to the priest and really comfortable, to the extent of being sorry of having to leave. • 73. Spotlight Reflection Recently in Journalism class, we watched the movie titled Spotlight which was based on the story of the 87 priest molestation cases that occurred in Boston alone. This movie followed a team of Journalists, the Spotlight Team, who worked for the Boston Globe. This team tracked down 87 molester priests and cultivated a story to bring attention to the issue. While there were a lot of important concepts highlighted in this movie, the three main concepts of the film were on why this issue has been happening for such an exaggerated period of time, preposterous events can occur in the most unexpected places and that vulnerable people are effortlessly taken advantage of. The world let these incidents go on for too long. For years, the priests not just in these Boston churches, but around the globe had been performing inappropriate acts on powerless children in their churches. It was even made known that these churches were fully aware of these events and masked the truth from their communities. The church essentially wanted so desperately to believe that it was a minor flaw in the system. In reality, it was happening in an exuberant amount of religious areas. It is partially based on the statement that "no one wants to cuff a priest" because they feel that in a way, it would make them look atrocious. To keep muted on these events, people were put under restraint by their own family and friends. They were told not to speak out about their molestation cases. The belief in the ... • 75. Analysis of Behind Grandma's House In the poem "Behind Grandma's House", Gary Soto writes about an experience he had as a young boy. He speaks of himself as being a nerdy Spanish boy who wants attention. He screams out for attention by acting out in negative ways. Most know, to bring attention to one's self, one can acquire it by acting negatively or positively, but negative attention brings punishment. Soto obtains his grandmothers attention at the end of the poem, but he may have regretted it. Gary Soto's "Behind Grandma's House" is a 1952 free verse poem that uses imagery to suggest the speaker's perspective of the story. From the beginning of the poem, Soto depicts himself as a ten year old who wanted attention. He also depicts the era by which the setting of the poem is written. He states, "At ten I wanted fame", the word "fame" standing for his intense need for attention (1). In the next line he said, "I had a comb / And two Coke bottles, a tube of Bryl–cream" (1–2). By this he meant, he had thick glasses and slicked back hair, and for that era, thick glasses were for nerds, and the slicked back hair was the fashion in the 1950's. In addition, a slang word in the 1950's was "Daddy–O", who by which Soto refers to a priest (17). He states, '"No way / Daddy–O' to an imaginary priest" (16– 17). Since Soto uses the word priest, and not pastor or reverend, this indicates the person for whom he imagined calling "Daddy–O" was a Catholic male (17). Soto uses the word "Chale" toward the imaginary priest, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
