This document discusses genres in media and their defining features. It notes that genres provide audiences with expectations about the type of content they will consume. Genres are dynamic and change over time, allowing for new hybrid genres to emerge. They serve economic purposes for media producers to organize audiences, but also can reinforce dominant ideologies by limiting alternative interpretations. Overall, genres are recognizable groupings of media texts that share codes, conventions, and stylistic elements.
The history of documentaries began in 1895 with the invention of motion pictures by the Lumiere brothers. The term "documentary" was coined in 1926 by John Grierson to describe a short film. Grierson is considered the father of the documentary film movement in Britain in the late 1920s. Following World War II, documentaries disappeared from cinemas and were broadcast on television. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Direct Cinema movement in the US aimed to directly present social and political issues. Other movements like Cinema Verite in France favored a more minimalist style with natural lighting and handheld cameras. In modern times, documentaries have expanded into different genres and purposes, exploring a variety of topics and cultures to
The horror genre began in the late 19th century focusing on vampires and werewolves, and established these as stereotypes. In the early 20th century, films like Frankenstein and Nosferatu introduced new concepts and scare tactics to thrill audiences. The 1930s saw the rise of Gothic horror films blending science fiction, like Dracula and The Old Dark House. Technological advances in the 1950s-60s like 3D effects and lower budgets for films like Rosemary's Baby made the horror genre more popular and profitable, driving studios to continue innovating scares through increased violence and graphic effects in modern films like Saw and Dawn of the Dead.
- Jean Baudrillard was a French sociologist and philosopher born in 1929 in Reims, Paris. He obtained a doctorate in sociology and taught at several universities in Paris.
- Some of Baudrillard's key ideas included the loss of history in postmodern society, the role of media like movies and television in furthering forgetting of history, and how consumer society filters all reality through advertising and exchange value.
- Baudrillard was particularly known for his concepts of simulacra and simulation, which he used to explain how models and simulations of the real have come to replace the real in postmodern society.

Comedy has evolved significantly from 1895 to the present. Early silent films from 1895 to the 1930s relied heavily on slapstick and physical humor due to the lack of verbal jokes. From the 1930s to 1950s, comedy advanced as sound technology allowed for verbal puns, innuendos, and jokes. In the 1960s, comedy became darker and included social commentary exemplified by Monty Python. Modern comedy films from the 1990s onward, like Home Alone, include mini comedic clips and logical story progression, with many also incorporating elements of romance and sex. While action comedies declined due to competition, spoof films remained popular, and recent comedy trends include mockumentaries such as American Vandal.
The crime/thriller genre originated in the early days of silent films in the 1900s. Perhaps the earliest examples were Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900) and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1905). Famous directors who helped establish the genre include Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese through films like Reservoir Dogs, The Godfather trilogy, and Mean Streets. Well-known actors who often play criminals/gangsters in these types of films are Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Michael Madsen. Major film studios that distribute crime/thriller films include Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Paramount

Postmodernism refers to contemporary culture after the modern era. It emerged in the 1980s as modernism was either ending, being rejected, or changing into a new order. Postmodernism questions objective truths and universal values. It is characterized by pastiche, parody, bricolage, and intertextuality. Pastiche imitates previous works positively, while parody aims to ridicule. Bricolage combines different media texts into new forms, like reality television. Intertextuality references other works within a text. Postmodern architecture, fashion, and food also hybridize styles and reference history.
During the silent film era of the early 20th century, comedy films relied heavily on visual humor like slapstick and burlesque since there was no sound. Popular comedic actors of this time included Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd. In the 1920s, animated cartoons featuring characters like Felix the Cat and Mickey Mouse also became a popular comedic trend. As sound was introduced towards the late 1920s, it allowed for verbal humor and enhanced visual gags, though Charlie Chaplin still made silent films with occasional sound effects. Different types of comedy films emerged over the decades, including screwball comedies by Frank Capra, darker satires in the late 1950s, black anti-war comedies in
Horror films first became popular in the late 1890s with the film "The House of the Devil" setting the scene. Some of the most famous early horror films included ones from 1925 and 1931. People are entertained by and drawn to horror films because being scared with no real consequences is exciting and anticipating how filmmakers will scare audiences is enticing. Recently, spoof horror films that comedically reference or remake conventions from classic horror movies have grown in popularity as they appeal to both horror and comedy fans. Horror films have been popular for over a century and will likely continue attracting audiences through adaptations like spoof films and innovative scares.
The document discusses a film project called "The MOB" that subverts gangster film conventions in some ways. It has a diverse multicultural cast unlike traditional gangster films that were predominantly white. A unique aspect is combining a classic gangster storyline with an East London setting, representing a hybrid of high and low culture dominated by ethnic minorities. Props and vehicles are used to represent gangster film conventions while making it contemporary by setting it in East London, where setting and appearance help divide the class of characters. The marketing campaign would involve mainstream methods like bus shelters, cinema screenings, posters on trains and in stations to spread awareness widely through word of mouth.

This document discusses three postmodern texts - Gorillaz, The X-Factor, and The Only Way is Essex - and how they challenge conventions of traditional media. Regarding Gorillaz, it notes their eclectic music style mixes genres and that they use virtual band identities rather than showing the real band. For X-Factor, it discusses how the interactive audience voting challenges the passive audiences of modernism. It also notes X-Factor's hyperreal presentation of contestants. For TOWIE, it discusses how the show references stereotypes through its characters and blurs reality versus simulation. Overall, the document analyzes how these postmodern texts upend traditions of singular genres, passive audiences, authentic representation, and the real

Comedy has evolved significantly from its origins in the late 19th century. Early comedy films in the silent era relied heavily on slapstick humor popularized by Charlie Chaplin. In the 1950s and 1960s, television rose to prominence and comedy films became darker, often dealing with themes of murder and war. By the 1970s-1980s, comedies featured more foolish and immature humor, while sketch films grew in popularity. Today, comedy encompasses all genres and remains a major form of entertainment across film and television.
Postmodern media breaks the rules of representationSianLynes
Postmodern media often breaks conventions of representation to create simulated realities that distort or subvert expectations. This is seen in films like Drive and Inglorious Basterds, which manipulate genres and use techniques like self-reflexivity to present disjunctive worlds. Television shows also break rules, like Family Guy's Star Wars parody that acknowledges itself as constructed fiction. Lady Gaga similarly constructs a simulated persona through allusions and genre-crossing. Overall, postmodern media challenges realistic representation to develop new meanings, though these can only be understood by media-literate audiences.
The document discusses two pioneering television series from the 1970s that centered around real families: An American Family from 1973, and The Osbournes from 2002. Both shows were media phenomena as they gave viewers an intimate look into the daily lives of families. The Osbournes in particular blended elements of a sitcom like introducing conflicts and resolutions with each episode, but was considered the first reality sitcom as it was unscripted and simply followed the family at home.

Life Magazine was a seminal 20th century publication that documented major events through iconic photographs. It is being digitized, with over 10 million photos to be made freely available online. This raises issues about maintaining the publication's curatorial standards as images are shared across unrestricted social networks. However, embracing social platforms and community input could help engage new audiences and keep the historical images alive for future generations. Research found that iconic figures like Marilyn Monroe continue to fascinate online communities, suggesting Life's collection remains culturally relevant in the digital era.
Comedy began in 1895 with silent films that relied on slapstick and burlesque humor. Slapstick involved exaggerated physical comedy like chases and pratfalls, while burlesque used parodies and sketches. Charlie Chaplin was famous for his slapstick films in the 1910s that featured daring stunts and aerobatics. As silent films lost popularity in the 1930s-1950s, comedy films incorporated dialogue and verbal humor like innuendos and parodies. In the 1960s, comedy became darker with social commentary and spoofs, exemplified by the influential Monty Python. Modern comedy encompasses various formats, from sketch shows like Little Britain to films that use humor around alcohol and youthful hijinks like
We have decided to target 15-30 year olds for our film since they make up the majority of cinema goers. However, focusing on this niche art house market means our film will only be shown in select theaters like the Phoenix that cater to smaller audiences. While this age group will relate best to the younger characters and genre, targeting them exclusively risks limiting our audience since most people in this demographic tend to follow mainstream options instead of art house theaters.

The band needs 5-6 masks for a photoshoot, including at least one skintight mask to imprint on people's memories and represent the band's look. Another mask should be totally plain white to represent how pop music has no character. The remaining masks should stand out to fit the band's horror genre. The band's clothing will be casual so the masks are the emphasis, which fits the target audience who associates masks with metal bands like Slipknot.
Apply narrative to one of your coursework productionsSianLynes
This document discusses the narrative elements in a music video the author created for their coursework. It analyzes how various film and narrative theories were applied to tell the story and engage the audience. Binary oppositions between indoor and outdoor scenes were used to represent the "living" and "dying" states mentioned in the song. Todorov's theory of narrative structure provided an original equilibrium, disequilibrium, and new equilibrium. The mise-en-scene and costumes further developed the narrative and relationship of the artist through ideas like voyeurism and how she challenges or accepts the male gaze. Overall, the author believes the polysemic narrative kept the audience engaged and allowed different interpretations of the story.

Film noir is a term used to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas from the 1940s to 1950s that emphasized cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. These films had a low-key black-and-white visual style influenced by German Expressionism. Many noir stories and attitudes came from hardboiled crime fiction of the Depression era. The term "film noir" was coined by a French critic in 1946 and was unknown in America until later when scholars defined the genre retrospectively. Film noir covers a range of protagonists from private eyes and police to boxers and ordinary citizens drawn into crime. While originally an American genre, noir films have been made internationally with neo-noirs continuing the style

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Editor's Notes
In 1893, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes – a character he had been writing about with great success since 1887’s A STUDY IN SCARLET – in a story called “The Adventure of the Final Problem.” Conan Doyle reportedly felt that the Holmes stories were keeping him from accomplishing more important work, so his solution (ironically) was “The Final Problem.”

Merriam-Webster, the Oxford dictionary and other recognized sources define it as (.. The word originally pertained to a temple or sacred place [Latin fanum, poetic English fane]. The modern sense of "extremely zealous" dates from around 1647; the use of fanatic as a noun dates from 1650.) However, the term "fancy" for an intense liking of something, while being of a different etymology, coincidentally carries a less intense but somewhat similar connotation to "fanatic". The word emerged as an Americanism around 1889.
As you can say “I am a fan of x” you’re saying something rich and distinctive about yourself very quickly. It happens the same with brands, so your role is to facilitate and foster this identification as a first level of co-creation with your consumers.
That’s why your consumers should be the first to know all the details about what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Engage them in networks of brand insiders and they will become your most efficient advocates.
Bring your consumers on board when it comes to innovate, provide them with the right tools to play with your brand and re-use it in creative ways, help them make the brand a part of their daily lives.
Well, you still actually own it, but you don’t get to decide exactly how it’s going to be used and what are the meanings that will be associated to it.
