Simona Halep(born 27 September 1991 in
Costanta) is a Romanian
professional tennis player. She has been
ranked world No. 1 in singles twice between 2017
and 2019. In total, she has been No. 1 for 64
weeks, which ranks tenth in the history of
the Women's Tennis Association (WTA)
rankings. She is popular in her home country of
Romania. Journalist Adrian Toca has said, "Simona
is without a doubt the biggest sports star in
Romania".After Halep won Grand Slam titles at
the 2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon, she
was welcomed back to Romania with large
celebrations at the Arena Națională in Bucharest.
About 15,000 people attended the celebration
after the 2018 French Open title and about
30,000 people attended after her 2019
Wimbledon triumph.
3. Nadia Comăneci
Nadia Elena Comăneci Conner (born November 12, 1961),
known professionally as Nadia Comăneci, is a Romanian retired
gymnast and a five-time Olympic gold medalist, all in individual
events. In 1976 at the age of 14, Comăneci was the first
gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10,00 at the Olympic
Games. Comăneci is one of the world's best-known gymnasts
and is credited with popularizing the sport around the globe. In
2000, she was named as one of the Athletes of the 20th
Century by the Laureus World Sports Academy. She has lived in
the United States since 1989, when she defected from then-
Communist Romania before its revolution in December that
year. Nadia Elena Comăneci was born in Onești a small town in
the Carpathian Mountains , in Bacău County. She graduated
from Politehnica University of Bucharest with a degree in sports
education, which gave her the qualifications to coach
gymnastics
4. Queen Maria
Maria of Romania (b. October 29, 1875 , Eastwell
Park, Ashford, Kent, England - d. July
18, 1938 , Pelisor Castle , Sinaia , Romania ) was a
crown princess and the second queen of Romania ,
as the wife of the Prince. of the Crown later became
King Ferdinand I of Romania . She was the mother of
King Charles II .Mary, born Marie Alexandra Victoria
of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , was a Grand Princess of
Great Britain and Ireland, the niece of
Queen Victoria of Great Britain. He married on 29
December 1892 with Ferdinand , heir to the throne
Prince Romania , trying from the beginning and
managed to integrate the nation had adopted the
Princess and, since 1914 , as Queen. Maria will have
a very short adolescence, spent in Coburg and
Rosenau, she being forced to enter the complicated
political-diplomatic ballet of European monarchical
marriages in the second half of the nineteenth
century. She died July 18,1938 of natural causes.
5. Ecaterina Teodoriu
Ecaterina Teodoroiu (1894-1917), one of the most revered
figures in Romanian military history, was born in 1894 in Vlădeni,
a village near Târgu Jiu in northern Oltenia. She studied in Târgu
Jiu and Bucharest to become a school teacher and joined the
Scouts movement in 1913. When Romania entered the
conflagration against the Central Powers in 1916, she decided to
support the war effort. She first served as a nurse with the
Scouts and later, after learning of the tragic fate of her brother
who had been killed in action, she made the extraordinary
decision to enlist as a soldier. Her application was first denied
but her famous persistence eventually paid off.Ecaterina was
killed on 3 September 1917 during the Battle of Mărășești, as
she led her platoon into combat. Although in agony, she
managed to mutter a few last words of encouragement to her
comrades. Initially buried not far from the front, Ecaterina
Teodoroiu was interred in Târgu Jiu with military and civilian
honours after the war. Her extraordinary bravery and patriotism
have been commemorated with an array of public monuments
throughout Romania and she has become a beloved character in
books and film.
