Was born on October 29, 1875, at Eastwell Park, in Kent
County, England. Princess Mary was the daughter of Alfred of Great Britain and
Ireland, Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900) (who
had refused the Throne of Greece in 1863) and the Great Duchess Mary
Alexandrovna of Russia (1853- 1920). Thus Princess Mary was the niece of Queen
Victoria of Great Britain (1819-1901) and Tsar Alexander II of
Russia (1818-1881). On January 10, 1893, she married the heirloom Prince of
Romania, Ferdinand, with whom he had six children. At their wedding was also
the Emperor of Germany.
By marrying with Catholic Ferdinand, Mary lost her place on the Crown of Great
Britain. The same was to happen in 1948 with King Mihai I.

4. After a childhood in England, in the middle of nature in Kent County, after visits to the
Tsar Court, his grandfather, but also to Malta, Mary came to her adoptive country in 1893
as the wife of Prince Ferdinand. Its remarkable qualities have quickly transformed it into a first-
rate public figure, and its naturalness conquered the Romanians. Upon coming to the country,
George Cosbuc worshiped a poem in which he said that she to become a "second sun" for
Romania. Intelligent, beautiful, full of courage and determination, the future queen participates
from the beginning in the Romanian cultural life and links herself to many social and cultural
projects.
Mary became queen in 1914. Bound by blood ties with England and Russia, and convinced
that England would never be defeated, she claimed the need for Romania's alliance with the
Entente to recover the Romanian Austro-Hungarian provinces. His role as adviser to King
Ferdinand hung heavily in his decision to enter into war against his homeland, and Queen pleaded
the cause of Romania in correspondence with her primary cousins, King George V of Great
Britain and Tsar Nicholas of II of Russia.
5. The relationship of the princely and then royal couple Ferdinand and Mary was
complex and with a sinuous evolution over time, but what constituted a constant
of this relationship was the permanent dissociation between public and private
life, which both Ferdinand and Mary had done it. They never left personal or
couple issues to the detriment of the public functions they had at society,
focusing their energies and efforts in a concerted way to fulfill their mission.
"Our honest concern has always had one object: Romania. Any mistakes we have
made, we have always animated our best intentions, and I am convinced that the
people know this too.
The fact that this marriage was established from dynastic interests without the
two future spouses having a say, as well as the difference in their age and
temperament, made in the first years of marriage the relationship of the two to
be quite a tumultuous and unequal.

7. The couple Ferdinand and Mary had 6 children, one of them, Prince Mircea,
died at an early age. Their first child was born only nine months and five days
after their marriage, it is Prince Carol, born at Peleş Castle, in 1893. After
him:Princess Elizabeth (1894), Princess Maria (1900), Prince Nicholas (1903) ),
Princess Ileana (1909) and Prince Mircea, born in January 1913.
The relationships between parents and children in the royal family of Ferdinand
and Mary were apparently normal, but in fact both the king and the queen did
not get involved in the education of the royal children as much as it would be
necessary for them to become aware of and to fully understand the mission that
came within them within Romanian society. Maria, childish and daring, did not
manage to supervise her children strictly, while Ferdinand, due to her inability to
make judgments and especially because of her excessive timidity, failed to make a
living to his children.
8. The children were, of course, given the proper instruction, but the Royal
House could not be a true pedagogical institution. The Court was rather a
poor environment in which each royal child grew in his will without a
rigorous education appropriate to their future mission, the formation of their
personality suffering from serious gaps.
For Mary, "my children were the focus of my life. The women of my race are
passionate mothers and we can not imagine the world without children. All
our work, our endeavor and our pursuit have no other goal than to shape
them according to our ideal, to make them happy and to prepare them for a
beautiful future. "
10. The First World War transformed her into a national hero. She actively
participates in the front, encourages wounded and soldiers from the hottest
battle points, fears no bullets, epidemics, wounds or poverty. Mary ends up
being called "Mother Queen", "The Wounded Mother" and "Queen
Soldier" (she was also the former Honorary Commander of the 4th Roşiori
Regiment, who wore her name and whose uniform she dressed, being also
skilful rider). She set up the Queen Mary organization, which has
developed a network of hospitals in Moldova and the ambulance service.
Not only was he not afraid, but he regarded the approach of his people as
a privilege that other crowned heads did not have
11. After the war, Queen Mary joined the Romanian state people on an unofficial
position at the Paris peace talks to plead the case of our country with regard to
territorial gains. Few people seem to be aware that Romania's current dimension
is largely due to the lobbying efforts of the Queen Mary in Paris. She has also
writted many books and articles about Romania in the hope of removing
negative feelings about the country for which had come to nurture such a deep
love. Spirituality and an unshakable faith in God have led the Queen through its
entire life.
12. Even after the great powers of the world were made and recognized by the
Great Union, Queen Mary continued to plead the cause of Romania and
promote the country's values beyond the borders until she was removed from
the political life of the country with Carol taking over the throne
13.
14. After Ferdinand's death and the birth of his son Carol II (1930), he
succeeded in removing the Queen Mary from political life, forcing her to live
in a kind of domestic exile at her Balchik residences and Bran.
In the past two years of illness, he was treated to different sanatoriums in
Europe, returning to the country in the summer of 1938, dying at his
residence in Pelişor.
She demanded by testament that the body be buried in the episcopal church
of Curtea de Arges, and that the heart be kept in a raid at the Stella Maris
chapel of the Balchik residence. After the Cadrilater's transfer in 1940, the
Queen's heart was moved to Bran.
Queen Mary was a loving and art collector, supporting a number of artistic
and literary personalities with scholarships and money. She is the author of
some interesting memoirs, as well as stories and lyrics for children.
