Falls are a major health issue for the elderly. They are the second leading cause of accidental death worldwide among adults over 65. Many factors increase the risk of falling, including increased age, living alone, visual impairment, arthritis, and alcohol use. Common places for falls are in the bathroom. Prevention strategies include removing home hazards, wearing sensible shoes, and using assistive devices like motion sensors, toilet seat risers, and grab bars in bathrooms.

Bathroom slips and falls are responsible for thousands of injuries in Australia every year. Apart from causing injuries, however, slips and falls may also lead to death.
Seniors' falls are seen as an epidemic. In light of this fact, it is one of the major reasons for the poor quality of life, impairment in seniors, and occasionally even mortality. Here is a PPT explaining the importance of fall prevention for the elderly. Hope it enriches you.
JCI IPSG 6 says Reduce the risk of patient harm resulting from falls so it is our utmost responsibility to take of the elderly in the most vulnerable places of the house like bathroom. I lost my mother due to her bathroom fall followed by bed ridden complications like DVT, digestion problems and pneumonia .I dedicate this topic to my mother who dies on September 22 2015.
Falls are the top cause of accidents in people over the age of 65. Falls are also the main cause of serious injuries and accidental deaths in older people.
Even older people who appear to be strong and well can fall. Falling is a real threat to your ability to live on your own.
Dementia Patient Activity Monitoring and Fall Detection using IoT for Elderlyijtsrd
There is drastic increase in population of dementia patients and also elderly since we are growing as modern society. To avoid the need of special care centers for people suffering from such disease usually it is suggested to stay in their own house. The product presented in this paper provides user current localization, Real time image processing, automatic fall detection and activity monitoring and also manage emergency situations. The Product aims to help patients retain their independence, whilst reducing the demand on care givers as well as providing patients freedom of independently walks outside. Prof. Deepali K. Hypertension is a chronic condition of concern due to its role in the causation of coronary heart diseases. Hypertension is a worldwide epidemic and important risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke and renal diseases. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels and is sufficient to maintain tissue perfusion during activity and rest. Hypertension is sustained elevation of BP. In adults, HTN exists when systolic blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140mmHg or diastolic BP is equal to or greater than 90mmHg. The

Medical Technology Tackles New Health Care Demand - Research Report - March 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) predicts that with, against, despite, and even without the global pandemic, the medical technology (MedTech) industry shows signs of continuous healthy growth, driven by smaller, faster, and cheaper devices, growing demand for home-based applications, technological innovation, strategic acquisitions, investments, and SPAC listings. MCG predicts that this should reflects itself in annual growth of over 6%, well beyond 2028.
According to Chris Mouchabhani, Managing Partner at M Capital Group, “Despite all economic scenarios that one may consider, beyond overall economic shocks, medical technology should remain one of the most promising and robust sectors over the short to medium term and well beyond 2028.”
There is a movement towards home-based care for the elderly, next generation scanning and MRI devices, wearable technology, artificial intelligence incorporation, and online connectivity. Experts also see a focus on predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory, and precision medicine, with rising levels of integration of home care and technological innovation.
The average cost of treatment has been rising across the board, creating additional financial burdens to governments, healthcare providers and insurance companies. According to MCG, cost-per-inpatient-stay in the United States alone rose on average annually by over 13% between 2014 to 2021, leading MedTech to focus research efforts on optimized medical equipment at lower price points, whilst emphasizing portability and ease of use. Namely, 46% of the 1,008 medical technology companies in the 2021 MedTech Innovator (“MTI”) database are focusing on prevention, wellness, detection, or diagnosis, signaling a clear push for preventive care to also tackle costs.
In addition, there has also been a lasting impact on consumer and medical demand for home care, supported by the pandemic. Lockdowns, closure of care facilities, and healthcare systems subjected to capacity pressure, accelerated demand away from traditional inpatient care. Now, outpatient care solutions are driving industry production, with nearly 70% of recent diagnostics start-up companies producing products in areas such as ambulatory clinics, at-home care, and self-administered diagnostics.

5. EPIDEMIOLOGY OF FALLS
● Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional
injury deaths worldwide.
● Each year an estimated 646 000 individuals die from falls globally
of which over 80% are in low- and middle-income countries.
● Adults older than 65 years of age suffer the greatest number of
fatal falls.
● 37.3 million falls that are severe enough to require medical
attention occur each year

7. Risk factors
❏ The size of the impact environmental factors have on the risk of falling
among older people is uncertain. Some studies have reported that
between 30% and 50% of falls among community dwelling older people
are due to environmental causes and others that 20% of falls are due to
major external factors (those that would cause any healthy adult to fall)
(12,14).
❏ Drugs: the use of benzodiazepines in older people is associated with a
44% increase in risk of hip fracture and night falls. There is a significantly
increased risk of falling when using drugs such as psychotropic,
antiarrhythmic drugs, digoxin, diuretics, and sedatives.

● Over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall
injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.
● Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries.
● Every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.
● Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency

12. MOTION SENSORS
Motion sensor alarms can be a either standalone
single sensor and alarm unit, or they could come in
a two-piece wireless set consisting of a sensor and
an alarm/pager. Once motion is detected, the alarm
rings. This serves to alert a caregiver or family
member in case an elderly gets up from his bed or
from the couch. This allows the caregiver to
immediately come to the assistance of the elderly
to prevent any untoward accidents that may result.

13. TOILET SEAT RISERS
This allows people the elderly or the disabled
to experience ease when accessing toilets.
With toilet seat risers, there is less strain and
hassle involved in sitting down or getting up
from toilet seats. It is also helpful when
transferring from wheelchairs. Some even
come with removable arms to make
movements even more stable. The
convenience plays a significant role in
preventing falls that often take place in the
bathroom.

14. BATH/SHOWER SAFETY GRIP HANDLES
● A full 80 percent of falls happen
in the bathroom, according to
NEWS USA quoting a National
Institute on Aging Statistic.
● These are safety bars that seniors can
grab on to maintain his balance,
reduce effects of fatigue when he is
standing, maneuver directions easily,
or use something to grab into in the
event of accidental slips or falls

● Studies show poor illumination as the root
cause of up to 20% of facility falls.
● The perfect, low-cost solution for patients
who wander or frequently get up at night.
When a patient or staff disturbs the sensing
field, the light turns on, instantly making a
safer pathway. Perfect for use in any
healthcare facility, even at home!

16. HIPSAVER
● Between 1990 and 2000, there was nearly a 25%
increase in hip fractures worldwide. The peak
number of hip fractures occurred at 75-79 years
of age for both sexes; for all other fractures, the
peak number occurred at 50-59 years and
decreased with age.
● By 2050, the worldwide incidence of hip fracture
in men is projected to increase by 310% and
240% in women, compared to rates in 1990

containing pads (either hard or soft) along the outside of each
hip/leg, designed to prevent HIP FRACTURES following a fall.

a high risk of falls and hip fractures
