The fallas celebration takes place in Valencia, Spain from March 15-19 each year. The celebration originated with carpenters burning wooden planks called "parots" in the spring to celebrate the end of winter. Nowadays, neighborhoods construct enormous figures made of cardboard, wood, plaster, and paper mache called "ninots" that depict political and social satire. On the final night of the festival, March 19th, called "La Cremá," the ninots are burned in a celebration of fireworks, explosions and noise that draws many tourists each year.
