- TOGETHER:Welcome!WHITNEY: I’m Whitney. MAGGIE: And I’m Maggie. WHITNEY: And we are going to help you learn how to optimize your social networking by organizing your facebook account.
- MAGGIE: This tutorial will cover three settings in Facebook that are very useful, and little known. WHITNEY:The first skill is blocking people. Facebook is great for connecting with people, but if there are certain people you would rather not interact with on Facebook (or prevent them from trying to interact with you), blocking people lets you do this. MAGGIE: The second skill is grouping people. You can group friends into different categories, such as family, coworkers, teammates, etc. This allows you to more easily customize your privacy and account settings. For instance, you can allow everyone in a group to see certain parts of your profile, and other groups to not see them (such as pictures). It is also easier to contact groups---you can simply message the “teammate” group instead of finding every teammate in your friend list if you need to send out a message about schedule change. WHITNEY: The third skill is email settings. Your email settings are automatically setup for you when you create an account. However, you will probably want to personalize these settings to suit your needs and when you want Facebook to contact you through email.
- MAGGIE: read the screen
- WHITNEY: STEP 1From your Facebook profile page, or the Facebook Homepage, click on the Account drop-down menu in the upper right hand corner. Select Privacy Settings
- WHITNEY: STEP 2Once in Privacy Settings, select “Block List” at the bottom of the page
- WHITNEY: STEP 3Type in the name or email address of the person you are trying to block. If you want to block more than one person, you can simply repeat this and the next step.In our example, Melville Dewey wants to block Captain Jack Sparrow
- WHITNEY: STEP 4There may be several people with the same name of the person you are trying to block. If you can, identify the particular person you want to block and just select that one person. If you are unsure, you can always block every person with that name.
- WHITNEY: SKILL COMPLETED:You have successfully blocked this person from seeing you, or you seeing them, on Facebook. If you have more people to block, simply repeat steps 3 and 4. In our example, Melville Dewey will no longer be able to see or find Captain Jack Sparrow on Facebook, and Captain Jack Sparrow will not be able to see or find Melville.
- MAGGIE:You may find it helpful to put your friends in groups—family, friends, coworkers. This way you can alter how entire groups see your information. For example, you may want your family to see your pictures but not your co workers. Step 1: Get into Account settings and select “Edit Friends.” You access the Account Settings drop-down menu from your profile page or the Facebook homepage
- MAGGIE: STEP 2You are now in the Friends Menu. On the right-hand side of the screen, select the “Create List” button
- MAGGIE: STEP 3Enter the name of the group of friends. Example: “Family” or “classmates.”
- MAGGIE: STEP 4From your list of friends visible in this menu, select the friends that belong in this group by clicking on their profile picture.

- MAGGIE: SKILL COMPLETED!You have now successfully created a group of friends. If you wish to create another group, simply repeat steps 2-5.In our example, Melville now has a “Library Friends” group of friends consisting of Maggie and Whitney—Aw!!!!
- WHITNEY: SKILL 3 EMAIL SETTINGSYou may want to be notified by email on certain Facebook happenings. For ex: you get a friend request, or are tagged in a photo). You may want to be contacted every time this happens, only sometimes, or never. This skill will let you adjust the notification settings to fit your needs.Step 1: From either your profile or the Facebook homepage select the Account drop down menu in the upper right-hand corner and select Account Settings
- WHITNEY: STEP 2In the “My Account” settings, select the “Notifications” tab
- WHITNEY: STEP 3Select the options that fit your needs by checking or unchecking the appropriate boxes
- WHITNEY: STEP 4Once you have chosen when to be notified, click “Save” at the bottom of the screen before navigating away from this page.
- MAGGIE: Congratulations! You have successfully completed this tutorial. WHITNEY: Now you have several new Facebooking skills worth knowing, including blocking people, grouping friends, and changing your email notifications.
