In this research, my team and I approach issues such as the involvement of Steve Bannon in Trump campaign, data manipulation of 87 million people * (captured by APP "This is your digital life"), the influence on narrative and strategies advertising and how Facebook has been absent in the transparency of communication with its users who have had leaked information. Interestingly, the current election in Brazil follows a similar narrative through Whatapp. So, what would be the responsibility of these platforms in this new dynamic?

GATINEAU, QC, March 20, 2018 – The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has opened an
investigation related to recent media reports regarding alleged unauthorized access and use of Facebook
user profiles.
“We have received a complaint against Facebook in relation to allegations involving Cambridge Analytica
and have therefore opened a formal investigation,” says Commissioner Daniel Therrien. “The first step will
be to confirm with the company whether the personal information of Facebook users in Canada was
affected.”
The investigation will examine Facebook’s compliance with Canada’s federal private sector privacy law,
the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
“The allegations we’ve seen in media reports raise extremely important privacy questions. The digital
world, and social media in particular, have become entrenched in our daily lives and people want their
rights to be respected.”
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has an ongoing related investigation.
“We will remain in contact with the UK office and will work with other data protection authorities as
appropriate. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that the privacy rights of Canadian Facebook users are
protected,” says Commissioner Therrien.
Due to confidentiality provisions under PIPEDA, no further details regarding the investigation are available
at this time.
Both federal privacy laws are in urgent need of reform and the Commissioner has called on the government
to address the shortcomings in Canada’s privacy regime.
“If true, the allegations raise a major challenge for privacy rights. We have recommended strengthening
Canada’s private sector law in order to help strengthen consumer trust. I welcome the support of a
Parliamentary committee that recently reviewed PIPEDA,” says Commissioner Therrien.

Abstract
The transnational flows of information across nations and borders make it difficult to introduce and implement privacy-preserving policies relating to social media data. Social media data are a rich source of behavioural data that can reveal how we connect and interact with each other online in real time. Furthermore, the materiality of new digital intermediaries (such as the Internet of Things, AI, and algorithms) raises additional anticipated and unanticipated privacy challenges that need to be addressed as we continue to speed towards an increasingly digitally-mediated future.
A by-product of the large-scale social media adoption is social media data mining; publicly available social media data is largely free and legally available to be mined, analyzed, and used (Kennedy 2016) for whatever purposes by third parties. Researchers have begun to suggest that ethics need to be considered even if the data is public (boyd & Crawford 2012).
In the wake of the EU's recent legislation of the General Data Protection Regulation and the Right to be Forgotten, as well as increasing critical attention around the world, the roundtable will discuss how to navigate the transnational and material, as well as the complex and competing, interests associated with using social media, including ethics, privacy, security, and intellectual property rights. When it comes to giving, slacktivism versus “real” engagement is a false dichotomy. Critics need to get used to the idea that we live in a time of innovative new ways for people to get involved – including things that might not have qualified as “volunteering” or “donating” once upon a time. In volunteering, particularly, there are still many questions about how these new forms of online helping actually relate to traditional engagement.
Does the ladder of engagement, which seeks to move folks in an orderly fashion from bystanders to committed movement leaders, still make sense in a crowd-sourced, free-agent, sharing-enabled, microvolunteering world?
Not only are the rungs becoming blurry, it may be that “ladder” is the wrong metaphor completely.
At the 2011 SXSW conference in Austin, panel moderator Robert Rosenthal from the popular volunteer network VolunteerMatch (www.volunteermatch.org) discussed this with four technologists who are also creating innovative tools to engage audiences in social good.
How can their tools live beside other innovative, non-technical forms of volunteering -- such as pro bono and skilled models? What are the right business models for social enterprises that are involved in these technologies?
