WHAT IS EYE DONATION
Eye donation is charity purely for the benefit
of society and totally voluntary act of donating
one’s eyes after death by which corneal blinds
get benefited.
IMPORTANCE OF EYES
सर्वेन्द्रियाणाम नयनं प्रधानम् |
Eye is the most important sense organ by which
80% of knowledge is gained.

Corneal grafting which give vision to two blind
persons

FACTS ABOUT EYE DONATIONS
 Eyes can be donated after death only.
 The eyes have to be removed within six
hours of death.
 Eye removal takes only 10-15 minutes.
 Leaves no scar or disfigurement of the
face.
 Only the cornea is transplanted.
 Eye donation gives sight to TWO blind
persons.
 The donated corneas are transplanted to
patients eye according to waiting list.
 The eyes are never bought or sold.
 Eye donation is never refused.

HISTORY OF EYE DONATION
• In 1944, the first eye
bank was founded
in New York by two
physicians, Dr.
Townley Paton and Dr.
John MacLean.
• In 1937 V P Filatow-
Father of Eye Banking
put forth the concept
of Eye Bank
INDIAN HISTORY OF EYE DONATION
• In India first eye bank was started in 1945 at
Chennai at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.
• In 1989 EBAI(Eye Bank Association of India) was
established.
• In 1991 Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme
was Started.
• In 2009 amendments to eye banking medical
standards were done.
• Also in 2009 First National CME on Eye Banking
was organised.
Magnitude of Blindness
 In India about 13 million people are
blind.
 Out of which 4 millions are suffering
from corneal blindness.
 Of the one million deaths last year in
India only 42,000 opted for Eye Donation.
 Thus, by donating eyes we can cure
corneal blindness.

WHY TO DONATE EYES
WHO CAN DONATE EYES …
 Anyone from the any age group. There is no
age-limit for donating the eye.
 Person from any gender or religion can donate
eyes.
 Person from any socioeconomic status can
donate eyes.
 Person wearing spectacles or who has
undergone any refractive surgery can donate
eyes with prior information.

People suffering from
 Hepatitis
 AIDS
 Encephalitis
 Rabies
 Septicimea
 Retinoblastoma
 Leukemia
 Lymphoma
Do’s for Eye Donation
 Call nearest Eye Bank as early as possible.
 Keep the eyes of the deceased closed and
covered with moist cotton.
 Switch off the ceiling fan and put on AC.
 Apply antibiotic eye drops periodically in the
deceased’s eyes to reduce the chance of any
infection.
 Raise the head of the deceased by about six
inches, if possible, to reduce the chances of
bleeding at the time of removal of the eyes.
