The EYE is wonderful creation of nature and master-piece of perfection. And sight is one of the most precious possessions. To lose vision – total or partial – is a tragedy. If a man loses a leg, he can walk again with an artificial one. But if he loses the sight of an eye, it is gone for ever. Without sight, the world around is a closed book. It makes the blind person burden on the community. We have to guard our eyes against accidents and diseases to ensure preservation of perfect sight.
Anatomy
Hygiene of the Eyes The eyes should get the very best care one can give. Clear and healthy eyes enhance the personal beauty and charm. Keep the eyes and skin around the eyes clean by washing the face with soap and clean water. Washing at bed time is very good as it removes the dust and dirt collected throughout the day. Never use anyone else’s towel; handkerchief, sarees, dhotis or any other cloth to wipe the eyes. This may cause serious infection in the eyes. Trachoma commonly spreads this way. Use only clean and separate individual towels to wipe face / eyes. Do not expose the eyes to dust or very bright light. Do not use Kajal, Surma or any other material in the eyes unless prescribed by a doctor. If one must, use separate applicator for each person. Never touch the eyes with anything unclean or rough – finger, handkerchief or pencil. Avoid self medication. Do not use eye remedies sold by quacks or roadside medicine sellers. Consult the doctor soon, if there is any eye trouble. Get the eyes checked up periodically.
Accidents Eye accidents take place almost everywhere. Accidents just do not happen. They are the result of negligence on somebody’s part. It might be any one of us. Fireworks A large number of eye injuries in children are caused by fire crackers and fire works extensively used during Deepavali or any other festival. Fire crackers used carelessly can injure the eyes and may lead to permanent damage, which can be extensive and irreparable. Bows and arrows During Dusshera, children often play with bows and arrows. The flying arrow might hit the eye of any passerby. An eye hit by an arrow may turn blind. Gulli Danda Gulli Danda which is very popular game can be very dangerous. The Gulli with its two sharp ends might damage the eye.
Accidents Safety at play Eye accidents among children are frequent during unsupervised sports or play When mishaps occur, remember that external appearance is not true guide to the real damage to the eye nor the amount of pain. An eye doctor must be immediately consulted. When something falls in the eye When anything falls in the eye, e.g. small particles of charcoal, wood, sand, etc, the favourite spot for it to settle down is under the upper lid. In such a situation please observe the following: # Do not rub the eye. # Lift the upper eyelid and pull it down over the lower eyelid and move the eye ball. This will help in removing the foreign body from the eye. # Let the tears wash it away. Most of the time tears will do the cleaning. # Wash out the particulars immediately with plenty of water. # Ask some other person to take out the offending particulars with the help of corner of a clean wet cloth. # But if it does not come out easily, it is better to consult a doctor immediately.
Points to Ponder In case of eye accidents…. Cleanliness, prompt rest (Cover with cold cloth) and immediate medical aid. Wash the eyes with clean water and dry with a clean towel or cloth. Sprinkle cold water on eyes to remove dust. Before entering school, eyes of every child should be examined. Such examination should be repeated periodically. Some symptoms of a few troubles should be known. Eye Care of School Children
Behaviour Attempt to brush away blur; rub eyes excessively; frown. Shut or cover one eye, tilt head or thrust head forward when looking at near or distant objects. Have difficulty in reading or in other work requiring close use of the eyes. Blink more than usual, cry often or are irritable when doing close work. Stumble or trip over small objects quite often. Hold books or small objects close to eyes. Are unable to participate in games requiring distant vision. Are unduly sensitive to light.
Appearance Red-rimmed, encrusted, or swollen eyelids. Recurring styles. Inflamed or watery eyes. Crossed eyes. Too frequent blinking. Cannot see well. Dizziness Headaches Nausea Blurred or double vision. Complaints
Good Reading Habits 1 Save the eyes from unnecessary strain while reading. Sit with a good light coming from left and behind. It should be far enough to the side so that ones own shadow is avoided. 2 Avoid direct exposure of eyes to sunlight. It may affect the eye sight. 3 Hold the printed page about a foot and a half from eyes and at an angle of 45 to 70 degree from the horizontal. 4 Indirect lighting is easier on the eyes than a bright beam concentrated on what one is reading. Do not expose the eyes to dust or glaring light.
Good Reading Habits Do not read in moving trains and buses or lying in position or in flickering or dim light. It causes eye strain. 6 Do not read books or magazines with fine prints under insufficient light. 7 Give rest to the eyes frequently when reading or doing close eye work, by either closing the eyes or looking at a distant object preferably at green trees for a few minutes. 8 While watching television, do not sit very close to it. Watch T.V. from a distance of about three meters. It is considered safe.
Other Hints Have the eyes examined by a doctor if there are signs of strain, headache, watering, redness, poor vision, irritation or any other trouble. Avoid self medication. If you wear glasses, keep the eye glasses clean and free from scratches. Do not use cheap goggles. If you need them on medical advice, get them of good quality. Never use goggles of others. They may carry infection to your eyes.
Other Hints Lack of vitamin ‘A’ may cause night blindness. Eat amaranth, gram leaves, agathi, spinach (palak), cabbage, coriander, drumstick, pumkin, carrots, papaya and mangoes. They contain good amount of vitamin A which protects the eyes and the vision. It is advisable to get the eyes checked up periodically. Visual exercise as advised by the doctor can help correct some conditions, such as crossed eyes. But if faulty sight is caused by the imperfect shape of the eye balls as in far sightedness or nearsightedness only glasses correctly prescribed and fitted; can help one to see clearly.
REMEMBER There is always danger of infection when there is a sharp object in the eye. Infection can leave scars that interfere with sight. The eyes should have the very best care one can give them. They are the windows of the brain through which one enjoys the best in the world. Clear and healthy eyes enhance the personal beauty and charm. TAKE CARE OF EYES THEY TAKE CARE OF YOU
