FATALITIES
In the first half of 2015, 18 fatalities were
recorded in US mines (of which 6 were
contractors). Despite the trend being a
decrease in fatalities (for example, Canada's
fatality rate has fallen from 47.1 per 100,000
employees in 1998 to 9.3 in 2010), there is still
room for improvement.

MSHA
ACTIVITY
The Mine Safety and Health Administration
(MSHA) issued 121.646 orders and citations
in 2014, an increase of over 3,000 in
comparison to the previous year. In April
2015, US coal miners alone owed around $62
million to the MSHA on fines.
