This document outlines 7 extra credit opportunities for a chemistry class worth 3 points each, up to a maximum of 5 points added to a previous test grade. The opportunities include making an element card about a synthetic element, completing online activities about naming ionic compounds, and creating posters or flashcards about topics like naming ionic compounds, their properties, and identifying ionic compounds in common products. Students must complete the assignments at an excellent level by the due date to receive full extra credit points.

1. Extra Credit Opportunities #2
Each opportunity is worth 3 extra credit points. (Fewer points may be award for extra credit projects that are not completed at an
th
“excellent” level.) Points will be added to your previous test grade. (Due January 4 , 2012 [A student may complete two different
assignments and receive 5 extra credit points on their previous test.]
1) Make a 6” x 6“element card. You may choose your own element but it must be a synthetic element. Card must include the
following:
a. Symbol in 3 in letters
b. Name of element
c. Atomic mass
d. Mass number
e. At least 4 pictures that represent any of the following: uses for element, where the name originated, where element is
found, pictures of the element itself, or other ideas related to the element.
f. On the back please explain were the element was made, how it was made, the origin of the element’s name, and if
possible, any uses for the element.

In the middle of the page is Available Courses.
Click on Accelerated Physics-Chemistry
You will be prompted to log in. Log in as a guest by simply clicking on the “login as a guest” button
On the bottom right hand side of screen is a section called Extras.
Click on “Skill Activities”
You should complete the following activities:
Naming Stock System
Write me a note saying that you completed these activities and now have a thorough understanding of the concepts. You must
sign it and so must your parents.
(NOTE: When naming, don’t put a space between the metal and Roman numeral. For example, FeO, iron(II) oxide )
3) Make a neat, creative poster that an Honors Chemistry student could use to learn how to name ionic compounds (simple binary ionic
compounds). Pictures, diagrams, and examples are a must!!!
4) Make a neat, creative poster on the properties of ionic compounds. (Reference section 5-2 of textbook and/or the internet. Pictures
are a must!!!
5) Write a 1 page typewritten report on how science, technology, and engineering have lead to advancements in the development of
fireworks. NO plagiarism!!!!
(1.0 in margins, 12-pt font, Times New Roman font; attach a coversheet with title, your name, date, period)
6) Look around your house to find common products that include at least one ionic compound. Identify at least 8 different ionic
compounds in 8 different products. Make a poster of the 8 products. You may use simple binary ionic compounds or ionic
compounds with polyatomic ions (reference Chapter 5-3 or internet, if needed). You must include the following:
a. Either the label from the product or a picture from the internet or a neat, legible colorful drawing of the product
b. The name of the product (if unclear from the label)
c. The name of ionic compound
d. The formula of the ionic compound (use internet if necessary)
7) Make flashcards for each of the vocabulary words in chapter 5 (For at least 50% of the words you need to have a written definition
and a picture/drawing.) Cards must be neat! And must not look like you did them in ten minutes!!!
