Ancient And Early Modern Societies

Ancient and Early Modern Societies Mesopotamia, China, Aryan India, and early modern Europe
are all different when it comes to the way they live.
Mesopotamia is known to be the land between the Tigris and Euphrates river , according to the
Greek meaning. In Mesopotamia there is four primary categories of people. First is the nobles,
second is the free clients who worked the lands, third is the commoners who owned their own
land, and lastly is the slaves who were prisoners of war. Mesopotamia was the first civilization in
history to create a detailed legal system. This system is called the code of Hammurabi. The laws
differed for different social statuses and the punishments were an eye for an eye. If an awilu
[craftsmen/laborers] should blind the eye of another awilu, they shall blind his eye. (Milestone
Documents, Mesopotamia: Code of Hammurabi Short Version ) This punishment comes from the
context of the Talion Laws and it states that the action done by the person, the punishment should
be on the same level as the action. These laws were written on Diorite Stela which is a hard black
stone and written in the language Akkadian. This language was spoken throughout Mesopotamia.
Specifically there is 282 laws but they were quickly destroyed by king Shutruk Nahhunte. A
Mesopotamian religion is different than your typical religion. Their religion focuses on different
aspects of a life. For example

Sol Lewitt
Although the idea of an artist creating work beyond their death might seem like a ludicrous thought
to some, in reality, one might be surprised to find that the work of Sol LeWitt is still being
manufactured after his late death in 2007. During the 1960s, Lewitt proposed the revolutionary
claim that an idea itself could be art. Today, Lewitt s legacy still manages to challenge the notion
that art must physically manifest into an object. LeWitt s conceptual art abolishes the art as an
object as well as the artist s physical labor in creating the artwork as intrinsic to the definition of art.
Furthermore, his framework separates human agency from the mechanical aspects of actually
making the work. In spite of what most people think, not all art is the unique product of a
disciplined master. While many may argue that Lewitt created juvenile simple pieces, this artist
actually introduced very complicated issues of authorship and authenticity into the conversation of
art.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As he said in his Sentences on Conceptual Art, I will refer to the kind of art in which I am
involved as conceptual art. In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of
the work. When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and
decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a
machine that makes the art. When LeWitt first made his wall drawings in 1968, he demonstrated
how art could be approached in a systematic and objective manner. In this body of work, LeWitt
establishes ideas that are translated into written instructions. In doing so, the various compositions
of lines, colors, and shapes, conceived by LeWitt become executable by anyone

Soccer Descriptive Essay
As I put my black and gold jersey on, I thought of the outcome of tonight s game. Either the
Penguins come out as champions, or they are forced to game 7. I walked downstairs to put my
shoes on, and I saw my brother with his black and teal jersey on. We headed to the car. My mom
was already annoyed by how much my brother and I were fighting over who would win the
intense game. Finally, after a couple of minutes, we journeyed to the big game. After a long ride,
we finally entered the streets of Pittsburgh. We sensed the excitement and tense atmosphere of
the city. Everybody crawled the streets getting ready for the big game. When waited in line, it
seemed like the whole city tried to rush in. The line took about 45 minutes, but it seemed like
hours. Finally, as we went through security, we were dogs released from a cage. From the time
we found our seats until the beginning of the game, more and more people filled the massive
arena. Many people filled the seats up like sardines. When everybody arrived to my favorite
place, we all waited for 8 o clock, the start of the game. By the time 8 o clock came around the
crowd already filled with excitement. When it was time for the national anthem, everybody
quieted down in order to respect the flag that represents everything that allows us to be in that
moment. The whole arena stood in silence as the red, white, and blue banner flew over. When the
words, the home of the brave filled the air, everybody started to scream again.

Importance Of The Human Genome Project
The Importance Of The Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project(HGP) provided valuable information that changed biology and
medicine. Beginning in the 1990 s a research project was created with the intent of determining the
sequence of nucleotide base pairs that made up human DNA. The Collaboration was key to
completing this project, it was an international project that required, funding, certain technologies,
and research methods. The Human Genome project provided important information that benefited
medical science. This project helped scientist understand different genetic diseases that plagued
mankind and opened the doors to many other scientific findings. Although the Human Genome
Project was met with initial resistance it has proved to be significant in many aspects of science.
The Human Genome project was widely anticipated, the possibility of understanding human
disease, causes of disease, and human evolution was at the forefront of science. In 1985 a project
was formally proposed with the goal of determining the complete nucleotide sequence of the human
genome. Although the proposal had the possibility to change science it was met with much
resistance. The main concern was privacy of genetic information, educating health care
professionals, and ethical issues involving the design of genetic research. Finally, in 1990 under the
direction of U.S. department of energy and the national institutes of health the Human Genome
Project was officially initiated in

What Is The Theme Of Class Antagonism In The Take By Klein...
In the movie The Take by Klein and Lewis, I have identified several themes of relevance to Marx
s writings: the problem of capitalism, exploitation, poverty, alienation, and the working class
struggle. The observations I have made about Argentina as a rich country made poor by the
mismanagement of capitalist policies, the subsequent consequences of poverty and
unemployment, and the eventual expropriation of business by factory workers, can be theorized
by Marx s concepts of the labour theory of value, estranged labour, and religion as the opium of the
people . Nevertheless, the sub urban Buenos Aires society differ in several aspects from the society
described by Marx, especially in Marx s idea of class antagonism, challenging Marx s ideas... Show

Unlike Marx s methodological theory of the proletariats realizing their class consciousness and
becoming a class for itself as opposed to the bourgeoisie, The Take suggests that the antagonism
between the two classes is not that easily defined as binary opposites. For example, the closet
Menem supporter at the Forja factory is seen as a traitor to his cooperative group, yet he is not a
bourgeoisie by status. The people and activity that fall in between the spectrum of extreme
opposites of division of labour and no division of labour, of bourgeoisie oppressing the proletariats
and the proletariats being oppressed, are being ignored by Marx s theory of class antagonism.
In conclusion, The Take presents several points relevant to Marx s writings on the problem of
capitalism, exploitation, poverty, alienation, and the working class struggle. However, the sub
urban Buenos Aires society differs in several aspects from the society described by Marx,
challenging Marx s idea of political revolution, absolute binary opposites in class struggle and the
sustainability of his communist model in the context of the 21st

Ancient Rome And The Roman Empire
At its height, the Roman Empire was the most extensive political and social structure in western
civilization. The remains of this empire can still be seen today. The empire was filled with
advanced people and technology for its time. The Roman Empire has rich history, helpful
geography and resources, provinces, an advanced government, and unique people and culture.
Ancient Rome can be divided into three main parts. The Roman Monarchy, the Roman Republic,
and the Roman Empire. The Romans believed that a man named Romulus founded the city of Rome
. The legend is that Romulus and his twin brother Remus were cast away in a basket on the Tiber
river. A she wolf found them and gave the twins her milk. The farmer and his wife, owners of the
she wolf, found the twins and raised them from there. Later in an argument, Romulus killed
Remus and then founded the city of Rome on April 21,753 B.C. Historians still do not know
how much of this legend is true or if it is true at all. Either way, Rome is named after Romulus.
The Roman Republic moved on to the Roman Empire because of a man named Julius Caesar.
Julius Caesar was a cunning politician who centralized government around himself. The people of
the Roman Republic feared that Caesar would make himself king and end the republic. Due to
this fear, Julius Caesar was stabbed to his death outside of the senate building on the Ides of March
on March 15, 44 B.C. The concept of one man ruling continued with Julius Caesar s

The King And The Chessboard Of Wheat
Humans have many methods to describe large numbers mathematically. Ever since the invention
of the concept of zero essential to the ancients for keeping good records of various transactions
humans have been using mathematics to describe ever larger quantities of items. The story of
the king and the chessboard of wheat demonstrates that while humans have been using large
numbers since the dawn of history; using and comprehending are two entirely different things.
In the story, a king tells a clever mathematician that he may ask for any reward he wishes for his
services to the kingdom. And so the mathematician asks for one grain of rice to be placed on the
first square of a chessboard, and then double that on the second square, and then double the
second on the third, and so on. By the time all the rice would be added up, it would equal well
over the production of rice in the entire modern world! Needless to say, the mathematician did not
receive his reward . The same concept applies to time, at some point the human mind ceases to
differentiate between larger and larger timescales.
Like the king and his chessboard, we have trouble contemplating the vast eons of time that lie
between us and the creation of the earth. Each day seems like a grain of rice, so small that it seems
as though they could never add up to anything substantial. However, looking back allows us to put
ourselves into perspective. By examining history, we can see that we have been on this planet for

Justice Should Not Be A Solution
Justice Is Up To Us From the very beginning, people have fought. Rather it be over food, shelter,
land, or money, these disagreements have remained ever present in our societies. Where there is
disagreement, there must eventually be a solution. Most of the time this solution can come from the
individual, or individuals, involved in the disagreement. When necessary, a third, impartial party is
to step in and fairly decide what is to happen. Out of all the commotion, no one ever stops to think,
What do I want to happen here, or better yet, How do I want this to happen? In a country christened
land of the free, home of the proud, it is appropriate to assume that everyone gets a fair trial, that
everyone is treated equally in the eyes of the law, and that the government does everything in its
power to protect the innocent and prosecute the bad guys. But that s not exactly the way things
work in America. In the land of the free, home of the proud, the court rooms continue to be
influenced by personal prejudice and the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill continue to
remain unrepresented. In efforts to better the nation, the principle of the nation must be upheld and
the values of America must be preserved. Throughout the history of America, prosecution has
persisted. From the moment that white men arrived, confrontation over the ownership of other
humans has existed. Some saw this ownership as fair, others did not. It wasn t until after many
long years of war, and

Nature Themes in Hurston’s Novels, Their Eyes Were...
Nature Themes in Hurston s Novels, Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the Suwanee
Nature themes resound throughout Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the
Suwanee. Perhaps two of the most notable instances where the lush Florida scenery augments the
novels plot lines are the tree scenes , in which Janie kisses Johnny Taylor beneath the pear tree in
Their Eyes Were Watching God (p. 10 12) and Arvey loses her virginity to Jim beneath the
mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee (p. 37 pp. 50 53).
Close readings of the two passages reveal sexually charged language. In Their Eyes Were Watching
God, the pear tree s barren brown stems and the snowy virginity of bloom are referenced, possibly

In Janie s revelation about her sexuality, she longs to be a pear tree any tree in bloom! This
metaphor for Janie s youth and vitality suggest she is in the spring of her life, with her glossy
leaves and bursting buds and struggling to make sense of the marriage that is buzzing through the
air with bees. Thus in this scene, Janie crosses the threshold from childhood to adulthood, a passage
made complete by her hasty marriage to Logan Killicks, a man far beyond the tumultuous spring of
youth that Janie is in the midst of in this passage.
The passages with the mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee focus more on a sense of rebirth.
When Arvey first takes Jim to the mulberry tree, it is because she wants a cleansing of her sacred
place from her old feelings for Carl. The images of the new mulberries growing perpetuate this
theme of rebirth in this scene. The word green also repeats itself, implying a sense of youth. This
is not so much maturation for Arvey (as it was for Janie) as it is a rebirth, a changing of her ways
as well as an introduction into sexuality. The actual scene where Arvey loses her virginity is rife
with violent images; the tearing have cloth, the gritting of teeth, juxtaposed against images of
passion. It is ironic that this should occur in her green temple of peace, but at the same time, Arvey
is essentially finally crossing the bridge

Comparing Three Chaplin Movies Essay
After seeing three Chaplin films at this point in chronological order it is not hard to notice the
extreme difference from the film City Lights to Chaplin s earlier films Mabel s Predicament and
The Pawnshop . In terms of cinematography it is real easy to see the differences in these films. To
begin the cinematography is different in that in the first two films most of the shots are wide
shots and with very minimal cuts. Also the lengths of the first two films are very short Mabel s
Predicament is only 11 minutes long and The Pawnshop is 29 minutes long. The lack of cuts and
the shorter runtime of the films indicate already it is of a shorter budget because the films were
limited in terms of how much they could film. When comparing City Lights it actually is shot like

City Lights in this case advances in story in comparison to the other Chaplin films. This is done
through a full length story that also has side characters and side stories woven in seamlessly.
Previously in the other films the focus was primarily on the Tramp and only the Tramp. However,
in City Lights we focused on the Tramp, The Blind Women, and the Rich Entrepreneur allowing
for a more full length feature film with different cohesive stories. In Ewen s article City Lights:
Immigrant Women and the Rise of the Movies she focuses on three early female archetypes in
film. These archetypes are entitled the vamp, the gamine, and the virgin. The Vamp is defined as
someone who is evil and a seductress who uses the male s sympathy of her against himself. The
Gamine is defined as having many male physical characteristics specifically short hair and also
having personality traits defining them as mischievous. Finally, the Virgin is defined as someone
who is very innocent, untainted, and pure in the eyes of

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
In Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs gives a detailed account of the life story of
Linda Brent which is the pseudo name for herself, outlining the events which primarily focuses
on her escape from her slave master, Dr. Flint. After learning that Dr. Flint has already fathered
11 children from his slaves, it is hard to imagine why he is never able to successful pursue Linda.
After all, just based on the sheer number of his incidents of sexual relations with his slaves, it
would seem highly unlikely that he will be they type that would be polite enough to wait for a
mutual consent. The fact that Linda is able to be able to avoid having any sexual relations, despite
countless pursuits by her master shows she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that he goes looking for her shows that the guise had worked. Also, writing helps her to
communicate with her family, and friends, in which she is also able to learn from news, as well as
coordinate events which might help her in averting Dr. Flint.
One of Linda s most significant figures in her life, her grandmother also plays an important role in
protecting her from Dr. Flint. It is clear that Slave masters have so much power over their slaves, so
it is highly unusual that Dr. Flint is not able to exercise this power to fulfill his lust for Linda.
Therefore, there is something else which would interfere with his power which is the fear of her
grandmother, and her place in society. Dr. Flint, who because of his place in society has to
maintain a respectable reputation, knows he can not afford to have rumors smearing his name.
Because Linda s grandmother is known for her integrity, any accusations coming from her, will
hurt his reputation significantly. His only hope of keeping the affair a secret, is to gain Linda s
consent. Therefore he uses many tactics including bribing her with a private cottage, threatening to
send her to plantations, and even trying to use sweet words to win her over. None of these
techniques however works to manipulate Linda into giving in. Linda s grandmother also has many
friends in the white population. One of these friends was so sympathetic that she hides Linda after
she had escaped for many years

President Jimmy Carter and Big Government Spending Essay
Although Carter was a likable man, the role of president was not the job for him. His big
government spending and policies were responsible for leading our fragile country into one of the
worst economic recessions ever. However, this all changes in January of 1981 when President
Ronald Reagan was sworn into office and came to our country s rescue. Reagan stepped in ready to
mend the deep scars left behind by setting forth an economic plan, Reaganomics, in hopes to bail
out our sinking country. Though many may say Reagan s conservative ways had this plan favoring
the upper class, this was not the case. In 1981 President Carter handed his duty to Ronald Reaganin
a vulnerable time for the country. America was in an economic recession where... Show more

Supply side went off the idea that, tax rates affect a person s incentive to work, save, and invest.
To put it simply: lower tax rates create more economic energy, which generates more economic
activity, which produces a greater flow of revenue to the government (Gramm, Phil). This was
known as the Laffer Curve. When Reagan first came into office he was dealing with marginal
rates at about 70% of returns on savings and investments, but as he left office, 33% was the
highest rate in the tax code which even dropped to 28%. These tax rates led the nation to one of
the longest peacetime recoveries economically (Gramm, Phil). Before people can blame Reagan
for stealing from the poor we must look at the overall effects of his plan that seemingly led
America out of a deep recession. First of all, the tax cuts that he implemented were for ALL
Americans. That means the rich, the poor, African Americans, and even the disabled. These tax
cuts were a positive incentive for everyone, which in turn helped to stimulate the economy. In
Reagan s Radio Address to the Nation in 1983 he explains how much trouble Carter s double digit
inflation negatively affected the country. The government was faced with large deficits and record
high interest rates. Of course with the devastating numbers, the poor were scrambling to keep their
heads above water and consequently many plummeted into deep poverty. With the poverty level sky

Mobile Ipv4 And Ipv6 Problems And Implementation
Mobile IPv4 and IPv6 Problems and Implementation Mobile IPv4 and IPv6 are the future of
mobile communications wirelessly and can help greatly in the infrastructure and combination

for implementation of IPv6 as the new standard to replace IPv4 and increase the number of

those will be discussed as well later as well as possible fixes in short and long term to these
problems. The main need to implement mobile IP is the fact that it can support more users and

This can be a problem as more devices connect to and use a network the more data they use and
can cause a network to become congested. A solution to reduce congestion is to use many small
wireless receivers within the range of a large tower to spread out the devices upon smaller more
confined networks when within cities and high density areas. And simply using long range low
capacity towers when in the country side and places where fewer devices will be on a network
at any given time, this is a combination of macro cells and micro cells to ensure network
stability. At layer 2 comes the need to differentiate between devices on the network and needs a
standard to work in place usually used at layer 2 in IP based communications over the internet is
Ethernet II and uses MAC addresses differentiating between devices by using a hexadecimal
format. This is done by burning a unique ID into a network card by a manufacturer, however
rather than the normal Wi Fi a better option for long range communications is WiMAX. The
differences in Wi Fi and WiMAX is that WiMAX has an effective distance of up to 90km while Wi
Fi only has a range of up to 100m and data rates on WiMAX is up to 40mbps compared to Wi Fi
with up to 54mbps. Next layer 3 the Network layer is where the Internet Protocol (IP) will take
place and be defined. There are two options to use here IPv4 or IPv6.

Public Relations Tactics for New Balance
1.The case reports on New Balance s strengths and weaknesses in terms of CSR. If you headed
public relations for the company, what PR tactics (aside from the CSR Report) would you
undertake to promote New Balance s many good deeds and practices?
New Balance (NB) had some great deeds and practices to flaunt on, specifically in the four
categories of overall governance, community support, operations and products and services. New
Balance was also an industry leader in many of the initiatives they took and were ranked fourth
largest footwear brand in the world. (2010, Dr. Veleva.V. New Balance Developing an Integrated

various initiatives they have implemented. In fact, their employees were also not completely aware
of what the organization was doing from a CSR standpoint. If I headed public relations for the
company, I would use tactics and strategies that targeted both internally and externally to promote
the various good deeds/doings of the company. I have explained on them below:
Internal: First, I would target our employees, as I believe employees to be spokespeople for the
company. Imparting the good deeds of the CSR doings would boost employee morale, engage or
be part of the deeds and they would like to talk about it, as they are feeling good about themselves
and the company. Some of the tactics I would use for communication are:

How Did Japanese Occupation from 1941 1945 affect the History of HK
Introduction
The Japanese occupation of Hong Kong commenced on December 25, 1941 after Sir Mark
Young, the Governor of Hong Kong by then, had surrendered the land of Hong Kong to Japan.
This surrender took place after 18 days of aggressive battle between Canadian and British defenders
and the overwhelming Japanese Imperial militaries. Eventually, the occupation continued for 3
years and 8 months. This paper seeks to analyze the implications of the Japanese occupation to the
people of Hong Kong and find how the British Government had reformed the political system,
recovered the economy, and improved the people s living condition after 1945.

After they had dispossessed the merchants and banks of the properties, Japanese authorities
substituted domestic dollars for Japanese army yen; thus, Hong Kong currency was banned. The
rate of exchange was settled at two Hong Kong dollars to one Japanese military yen. After a while,
in July 1942, the yen was re prized at 4 Hong Kong dollars to 1 Japanese yen, which implied that

Good Faith Bargaining
ESSAY GOOD FAITH BARGAINING The objective underlying the Fair Work Act 2009 was to
get the balance right (Smart Company, 2010 ; Forsyth, 2005) between fairness and flexibility in
Australian workplaces while getting rid of the harsher aspects of Work Choices which preceded it.
The Fair Work Act sought to restore collective bargaining in the Australian workplace relations
system, including enhanced rights for union involvement and, most importantly, the good faith
bargaining requirements. Good faith bargaining is an important requirement placed on the parties
by the Fair Work Act 2009. The concept of good faith bargaining is not a novel concept . It has

The absence of any reference to face to face meetings in the Act, or to reasonable places , implies
that meetings via teleconference facilities (Heinsz, 2000) or other similar means would suffice,
particularly where employers are located in remote areas. Therefore, the obligation to attend and
participate in negotiations allows employees to feel a sense of trust between them and the
management and for that reason will presumably be able to raise and convey their individual
concerns openly. It is also perceived that good faith bargaining would also enable employees to
negotiate more equitable and flexible outcomes (Patterson, 20002) for themselves. Thus,
management will be able to determine what issues need to be addressed within the organisation and
what needs to be done to resolve the problem. Overall, attending and participating in meetings will
provide a forum for employers and employees to get together before engaging in the enterprise
bargaining process (Anderson, 2010) to consider carefully what they are seeking from the process
and what measures they will employ to determine whether the agreement will be successful. It also
allows management and employees the opportunity to establish consultative mechanisms

BASKETBALL
The American sport of basketball has come a long way since it was invented by
James Naismith in 1891. Originally, the game was played with a soccer ball and peach
baskets instead of a backboard and rim. There were no holes in the baskets and a ladder
was used to retrieve the ball if it did stay in the basket. There were about fifty
players on opposing teams and players who committed fouls were sent to a hockey like
penalty box. Today the game has changed tremendously and basketballhas become one
of the top three sports in North America. The game of basketball has been considerably polished. It
is now played on a court, each

When Michael Jordan came on the scene, he
took basketball to a fantasy level. Nicknamed Air Jordan for his unique ability to soar
to great heights, he is considered as the greatest player who ever played the game.
Even if someone had never watched an NBA game, they would have heard of Jordan. He
overwhelmed the fans with his fade aways and amazed them with his dunks. He even
took basketball to the international scene.
He retired in 1999, it made the headlines in even the Japanese newspapers.
Even though he was a superstar of the game he did not do it by himself. In order to play
much more effectively, he must have team support. It is important to play as a
team and each player on the court has to make a contribution. Good, solid defensive plays
wins games, not just flashy moves by one player. It is also important to have a leader
on the team who is the like the MVP. They are the one who must motivate his team to
play to its potential. It is a MUST to have the right kind of attitude to be an outstanding
basketball player. You can t just proudly step onto the court, thinking you are the best
player. Even the best players in the NBA not only have the right attitude, but also work on
their weaknesses.
Most players also accumulate confidence from their coaches. Good coaches will

Voltaire and the Enlightenment Essay
Voltaire and the Enlightenment
During the eighteenth century a group of French writers and critics known as the Philosophes
favored change and reform. They believed in the power of the human mind, which was an idea
that was inspired by the Scientific Revolution. The philosophes had faith in the power of rational
criticism to challenge the tradition of the past. They also sought to apply the rules of reason and
common sense to nearly all major institutions and social practices. The philosophes proposed a new
kind of organized religion, a social religion which encouraged harmony and tolerance while
strengthening the bonds of moral obligations within society. One of the major French philosophes
during the eighteenth century was Voltaire.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Voltaire stressed the need for people to use reason to make decisions about life.
Throughout Voltaire s life, he inspired people to use their reason to make decisions about religion.
He believed in social religion which was the belief in God and in a world of future rewards and
punishments.3 Social religion was as old as creation and believed by most people. However, it
did contradict organized Christianity with its miracles, supernatural doctrines, and its religious
duties. Voltaire made many attacks on the Bible and historic churches. He focused on the
contradictions in the Bible and the improbabilities of miracles. The greatest of his attacks was on
the Old Testament. Voltaire doubted the existence of Moses, said that the Pentateuch was absurd,
and believed the Old Testament was just a collection of fables. On the other hand, he also
attacked the New Testament. He called Jesus a good fellow, a coarse peasant, and a fanatic. 4
Many people read Voltaire s writings on religion and so there was much dispute and conflict among
the church. His attacks on the Bible made people think and use reason in their lives.
Voltaire believed in God and that an afterlife was the most powerful force of moral constraint
within society, but as a philosophe he believed in the modern view of deism.5 Through the
socialization of deism, social religion was

Theory of Multiple Intelligences
Theory of multiple intelligences The theory of multiple intelligences was proposed by Howard
Gardner in 1983 as a model of intelligence that differentiates intelligence into various specific
(primarily sensory) modalities[disambiguation needed], rather than seeing it as dominated by a
single general ability. Gardner argues that there is a wide range of cognitive abilities, and that
there are only very weak correlations among them. For example, the theory predicts that a child
who learns to multiply easily is not necessarily generally more intelligent than a child who has
more difficulty on this task. The child who takes more time to master simple multiplication 1) may
best learn to multiply through a different approach, 2) may excel in a... Show more content on

Gardner elaborates to say that this intelligence also includes a sense of timing, a clear sense of the
goal of a physical action, along with the ability to train responses so they become like reflexes. In
theory, people who have bodily kinesthetic intelligence should learn better by involving muscular
movement (e.g. getting up and moving around into the learning experience), and are generally good
at physical activities such as sports or dance. They may enjoy acting or performing, and in general
they are good at building and making things. They often learn best by doing something physically,
rather than by reading or hearing about it. Those with strong bodily kinesthetic intelligence seem to
use what might be termed muscle memory , drawing on it to supplement or in extreme cases even
substitute for other skills such as verbal memory. Careers that suit those with this intelligence
include: athletes, pilots, dancers, musicians, actors, surgeons, builders, police officers, and soldiers.
Although these careers can be duplicated through virtual simulation, they will not produce the
actual physical learning that is needed in this intelligence.[8]

Social Security And The Welfare System
In as early as 2012 it is estimated there will only be two workers paying taxes for every one
recipient of Social Security benefits. At that time the surpluses generated each year will cease,
and Social Security will begin to run a deficit (paying out more than it takes in). The government
will then have to begin paying back the money borrowed from the trusts, plus interest. Since no
money has been saved for this purpose, the government will be forced to increase the national
debt, cut spending, or raise taxes. Even worse, unless something is done, the entire Social
Security system will use up its government IOUs and go bankrupt by 2037
(www.socialsecurityreform.org). We ve known about the approaching Social Security troubles

Amphitryon Dramatic Structure
To understand Dramatic Structure. The scaffolding on which playwright plots a tale to frame or
shape the action Mira Fellner, THINK theatre (Boston: Pearson, 2013), 51. While reading a play,
knowledge is applied in a critical perspective. Our mind tries to classify it in a coherent form into
one of the types of dramatic structures that have been studied by us. It should be possible now
to differentiate a climactic structure from a serial, episodic or circular one. Our goal is to
clarify the ideas presented in a play. For this, it is imperative to acknowledge that each play has
its own structure. Using the tools presented to us on Think theater we move on now from the
theory to the practice. We will be thoroughly working on the structural analysis of Amphitryon .
A three act play, by Moliere. On the very start we meet the main characters, first is Amphitryon
as the general of the Thebans. Next, we have Sosia , Amphitryon s manservant. We also meet
Jupiter also known as Jove , under the guise of Amphitryon . Finally, there is Mercury , who is
Jupiter s accomplice in seducing ALCMENA , Amphitryon s wife. The story begins after
Amphitryon has made his way to the war, a fact on which Jove will take advantage. Then,
Mercury proceeds to talk to the goddess Night . Mercury says to Night. Page 19 prologue, Mercury

Magnificent Minds of the Renaissance
The renaissance era of the 1500 s was a time of artistic, philosophic, and scientific wonder and
inspiration. Several new discoveries were made in the areas of science, and assumptions on the
world and universe around them were expressed by philosophers. Many individuals had been gifted
with artistic creativity and skill. The astonishing achievements of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo,

Leonardo created six pieces during his stay in Milan. The most famous of all his paintings, The Last
Supper, depicts Jesus with his 12 Apostles during Passover the moment that he reveals that one of
them will betray him (Encyclopedia Britannica n.pag.). Unfortunately, by the beginning of the 16th
century, the painting began to show deterioration due to the failed technique that Leonardo had
developed called tempra. Several attempts were made over the centuries to restore the piece but
were unsuccessful until modern restoration techniques were applied after World War II. Restoration
of this piece was completed in 1999 but very little of the original painting remains (Encyclopedia
Britannica n.pag.).
Leonardo based his scientific theories on careful observation and precise documentation. Sadly, is
treatises (writings) on several scientific subjects were never completed. The notebooks in which he
kept his theories logged, were written in a mirror script. This made it difficult for his work to be
deciphered during his lifetime. His scientific findings would have revolutionized science of the 16th
century had his work been published (Encyclopedia Britannica n.pag.). Leonardo anticipated
discoveries of the modern times.

Introduction
In this lab session, physical transformations were used to separate caffeine content from tea and
separate components by chromatography. The caffeine content was determined by extracting it
from the tea solution by adding sodium carbonate and dichloromethane into the tea and then and
then evaporating the solvent, using a hot plate. By weighing the empty beaker and the beaker after
the solvent has been evaporated on a top loading scale, the mass of caffeine was calculated. In the
second experiment, paper chromatography was used to separate the dyes in colored markers. The
purpose of this experiment is to observe how chromatography can be used to separate mixtures of

Discussion
By calculation, the amount of caffeine contained within 100 mL of the tea solution is
approximately 26.8 mg. This data may be imprecise due to the possible errors during the extraction
of caffeine from the tea. Errors could have been made during phase separation and how vigorously
or gentle the mixture was shook. Also, errors could have been made during the filtration process
and not separating enough of the tea mixture from the dichloromethane, thus causing the calculation

NEO COLONIALISM Neocolonialism describes how, after World War II, colonial powers started
using economics i.e. lending and interest rates, to control former colonies and cultivate new areas,
thereby creating political, economic and social dependencies. Neocolonialism describes certain
economic operations at the international level which have alleged similarities to the traditional
colonialism of the 16th to the 20th centuries. The contention is that governments have aimed to

Definition Of Racism
Title When it comes to racism we all have our own opinion on what this term may mean. However,
when it comes to race, there are privileges not many of us have the opportunity to take advantage of
because on our ethnicities. The word racism can have different meanings depending on what your
own viewpoint is. Racismhas been common for plenty of decades and in fact, is very popular
today. In fact, well known speakers such as Beverly Daniel Tatum and Peggy McIntosh provide
their own viewpoints on the common topics of raceand racism. First, Beverly D. Tatum s
viewpoint on racism is that she does not see it as an act of hate, but rather she sees it as a system
of privileges based on one s own race (Sweeney, 33). Tatum makes it clear throughout this excerpt
that race determines the privileges you are guaranteed to receive and the fact that those
privileged individuals do not notice the power they have compared to others. She connects the
idea of white privilege with her definition of racism, and clearly states that racism could also be
connected with people of color; however, people of color are not racist because they do not
benefit from racism (Sweeney, 37). Tatum gives many examples of White privilege to support her
idea that racism is a system of advantage based on race. For instance, Tatum talks about one of her
students who was a White male that was in her psychology of racism course and that he did not
know how advantaged he was until the end of this class. This White

Comparing Augustine And Free Will
Paul saw sin as any act that violated God s law, whether that be by nature or literal and physical
law. It was evident that Paul believed that whoever sinned without out the law will perish without
the law (Romans 2:12). He also discusses that those without the law, such as Gentiles, would do law
with what is written in their hearts, their conscience testifying (Romans 2:15). To avoid sin, one can
either follow the law through the legal system, or you can understand the law through one s faith
/relationship with God; either path would hopefully allow someone to avoid sin as much as
possible. While Paul does believe that humans can minimize how much they sin, he does not

Adam and Eve s pride is what led them to sin, because the serpent had informed them that they
could become self sufficient and more knowledgeable. Their undue exaltation (Augustine XI.13),
such as their desire to become self sufficient and knowledgeable like God, allowed them to choose
the wrongly directed path that God has not intended, therefore resulting in the first sin. Lastly,
Augustine also explains how he believes that free will and the body are two distinct things. In fact,
Augustine describes lust (Augustine XI.16) as a type of wrongly directed will that is common
among humans, but explicitly states how this will takes possession of the whole body and moves
the whole man (Augustine XI.16) into bodily pleasures. It is important for Augustine to make this
distinction about the will, because he wants to show how humans still have the opportunity to
choose a rightly directed will, instead of always thinking and/or acting with a wrongly directed

MIXED THEORIES OF TORT LAW: AFFIRMING BOTH DETERRENCE AND

understands tort liability as an instrument aimed largely at the goal of deterrence, commonly
explained within the framework of economics. The other looks at tort law as a way of achieving
corrective justice between the parties. If these are alternative camps, they are also to a large

economics provides a splendid and nearly complete account of the body of tort doctrine.18 *1804
As it happens, deterrence had not played a significant role in traditional tort scholarship. When
Landes and Posner expounded their theory of deterrence as a basic tort objective, they reviewed
the record of early tort writings to determine what support they could find for this theory; they
ended up merely reporting that with the benefit of hindsight, it is possible to find . . . prefigurings

economy and ever snowballing prices of basic amenities like food, gas and other numerous

followingreasons:
ORGANISATIONAL:
When there is reformation and reorganizing taking place in an organization in a short time frame,
leads to subversion of the organization. It occurs due to the following:
(a)Change in organizational structure.
The decision makers are not aware that how reformation and reorganizing process will affect the
corporate culture. It is fairly noticeable ,that not only the structure has been transformed but also the
cultural change has taken place instantly. Cultural changes will necessitate much more time than
changing the organizational structures. When there are melds or procurements there are clangs in
some segments which leads to aggravation of the employees. So the managers are pleased on these
cultural issues which are handled by the decision formulators of the company.

Master of Criminal Justice Administration (M.C.J.A.) Andrew W. Darlington March 24, 2011
Negotiations occur in our everyday lives, both in our professional and personal experiences. We
must learn to master the art of negotiation not only to get the things we want, but to assist us in
dealing with people and separating the person from the problem. One suggested way to do this in
the text Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving

After taking who the defendant in the case was out of the equation, I next focused on the interests
not the positions. It is good to see someone who has victimized others to be locked away for as
long as possible and receive a just punishment . As part of the second step, my ultimate goal was to
ensure that David received a fair punishment and reduced his likelihood of recidivism for similar
actions. The third step involves inventing options for mutual gain. In this type of situation you do
not want the defendant to gain anything, but if the defense does not feel they are getting something
in return it can drag out the legal process and frustrate both parties. I examined the charges and
determined which were the most important and what the ultimate results I wanted from this plea
agreement. In the fourth step I used an objective criterion. What do others in this type of situation
receive in punishment for these types of crimes? I knew that probation was unacceptable, and that I
had to make a suggestion of what a fair amount of incarceration would be based on impartial sources
of state code and precedent (Fisher, Ury, Patton, 1991). During the negotiation, I attempted to
ensure that there were no misunderstandings or emotions that would obstruct agreements or
reinforce prejudices. I wanted to ensure that not only the other side, but also the prosecutor and
judge in the case understood my perception and basis for

Engaging In Sodomy In New York
For centuries Amsterdammers have had a tolerant attitude towards different life styles. Live and
let live is one of the city s favorite sayings. Amsterdam could be considered the birthplace of
LGBT rights. Homosexuality was decriminalized here in 1811, and the first gay bar followed in
1927. One of the world s first gay rights organizations, the COC, was founded in Amsterdam in
1946. Historical Development of LGBT Movement in the Netherlands Engaging in sodomy was a
public offense in the Dutch Republic from 1730 until 1811. Most of the accused cases were males
with anal sex with other males (usually under the age of consent or the rape case). The heterosexual
who engaged in sodomy was not generally prosecuted under this measure. However,

Overview of Mcdonald s
Overview
McDonald s was founded in 1937, by two brothers, Dick and Maurice McDonald. The first store
the brothers owned was built in Pasadena, California and was originally a one window drive in,
serving only hot dogs and milkshakes. The success of this establishment led them to open their
second restaurant in San Bernardino, California, where they actually employed twenty or more car
hops and other staff with a much broader menu. These restaurants were incredibly successful and
by 1948 the brothers had made more money then they had ever dreamed. With their newly found
success, the brothers decided to overhaul their operations. After analyzing their operations they

Innovative products were masterminded by the large competitors to incorporate all of society. The
beginning of this is the kids menus in order to include those demographics, all the way to the
young adult world to capture the people who are constantly on the run. They soon began to include
the more gourmet items in order to bring in the more sophisticated demographics. Burgers and
fries and salads and kids meals seemed to incorporate all the above. The fast food sandwich industry
is extremely competitive and demand ever changing therefore it is very important that all chains
keep alert and willing to make changes.
Economic Characteristics
Most of the economic trends in the sandwich industry have evolved around value, convenience and
quality. Although customers are concerned about the trends mentioned, one lawsuit quickly
brought about sudden change. Teenagers were suing the fast food industry around the idea that fast
food was making them obese. Thus, the industry needed to reposition their focus and offer a
healthier menu to meet customer demand. Therefore, the industry focused on salads, turkey
burgers and fire grilled burgers rather than those cooked in their fat.
At the same time, the industry was beginning to focus on kid s menus. While parents were

The Post War Period Of Italy
The post war period in Italy represents a time of cultural, economic and political instability, as the
nation tried to re create the social bonds broken by the war and attempted to understand, and take
advantage of, the effects of mass industrialisation and urbanisation thanks to the economic miracle .
It was during this time from 1945 to 1960, with the people increasingly disenchanted with the
ability of the camera to truly portray the turmoil of recent history, that a new form of popular,
neorealist cinema emerged to reflect social reality and expand the viewer s moral, cultural and
geographic perspectives . This instability and new cinematographic outlook was the backdrop for
two pertinent Italian films: Rossellini s Roma CittГ Aperta, an authentic depiction of the daily lives
of Italians in Nazi occupied Rome, and Visconti s Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli, the journey of one
Southern Italian family as they migrate to the North during the economic boom in search of
prosperity. For both of these films, the ideas of resistance and struggle are two closely linked
themes which play an integral part in the portrayal of this period of Italian history. In order to gain
a more insightful understanding of how each of these are conveyed in Roma CittГ Aperta and
Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli, it is beneficial to analyse these films with reference to two sub themes:
resistance to oppression and economic struggle. This approach will make evident the comparisons
between the two

Legalization Of Marijuana Analysis
Marijuana is the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis Sativa.
Marijuana contains delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is responsible for the stimulation of
brain cells that release dopamine creating a feeling of happiness and excitement. Research and
experiments have proven that marijuana can have superb results on health issues. Marijuana can
be used to treat and prevent diseases such as glaucoma, seizures, decrease anxiety, minimize cancer
pains, and many more. A drug that causes temporary relief from problems that has never been
connected to overdoses is illegal in the United States because of two men, Harry Jacob Anslinger,
and William Randolf Hearst. Harry Anslinger was a United States government official... Show more

The legalization of marijuana will be beneficial in creating job opportunities, boosting tax
revenue, and reducing the number of arrests due to possession of the drug. The number of
people arrested for marijuana law violations in 2013 was 693,482 which costs the United States
more than $51,000,000,000 annually (Way, 2013). The governor of Colorado, John
Hickenlooper, in 2012 signed an executive order becoming the nation s first statewide vote to
end marijuana prohibition. Making recreational use and home cultivation of small amounts of
marijuana legal in the state of Colorado for adults 21 years of age and older. According to the
Colorado Center on Law and Policy amendment 64 will save the state $12 million in savings for
the year 2013 because of a deduction in criminal costs. Courts and prisons are seeing less
violations due to issues with marijuana so there is no need to spend as much of the tax payer s
money on them. Legalization of marijuana will not only benefit the states by reduced law
enforcement expenses but will also create jobs. Marijuana is a billion dollar industry that the
government is missing out on. With the legalization for the popular drug comes an abundance of
career options and job opportunities. There will be a need for companies that can make pipes,
bongs, vaporizers, papers and other products associated with weed which will then create job
openings. It will also create large amounts of profit and revenue from the sales tax that the
government could implement. On the market there will be a new product being produced and sold
increasing gross domestic product for the United States. It is expected that the legal use of
recreational marijuana could increase Washington State s tax revenue by $25 million by July of
2015, with an estimated $200 million increase by mid 2017, according to state economists

Louis Armstrong Concert Analysis
Watching Louis Armstrong s live performance in Berlin during the year 1965 was a pleasure,
especially because I am a great fan of his music. Throughout the concert in Berlin, Armstrong and
his chamber orchestra played 13 different pieces. With the exception of Jewel Woods entrance on
vocals for two songs, the makeup of the chamber orchestra did not change throughout the concert.
As a result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpetremained vital parts of each
song throughout the concert.
Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, Sleepy Time Down South, before
formally introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the
tempo was consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the
opportunity to each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion.
Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco
and was named Indiana. In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the
performer s immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from
beginning to end.
After Indiana was performed, the chamber orchestra transitioned to a more dolce and pesante
Black and Blue. Throughout this song, each performer played softly, keeping the dynamic at a
piano level until Armstrong s trumpet began to raise the dynamic to a more mezzo piano level. The
song s

The music industry much like every other industry has found ways to connect their product to the

ITunes, YouTube, and so much more. As music has become more available to the public the
industry now faces the threat of illegal downloading and sharing of music files. Many people will

Unemployment Rate Is Still High
It is true, that unemployment rate is still high. However, it does not mean that unemployment is
equally high. There are big differences between the races, genders and ages. First of all, since the
unemployment during the Great Depression is so high, it does not mean that whites and blacks
have the same rate. I begin with a survey of the evidence on unemployment rates by race in urban
labor markets during the 1930s. In the cities, unemployment rates were systematically higher for
blacks than for whites from early in the Depression (Sundstrom). This problem is solved in some
areas but it still becomes a problem. Moreover, recently, the racial difference focuses more on
Asians than the blacks. The latest number released by the U.S... Show more content on

It takes longer time for them to find a new workplace. For these unemployment rate issues, the US
economy had given the solution, which is creating more job spaces. That resulted the
unemployment seems to shrink. Nonetheless, this solution couldn t achieve to be the reliable
solution. According to Lindsey Piegza, The decline in the unemployment rate was the result of
hundreds of thousands of Americans dropping out of the labor force rather than finding gainful
employment (Soergel), which clearly explains that hundreds or thousands of jobs did not contribute
to the reduction of the unemployment rate even though there was a support from the U.S economy.
In addition to, despite the fact that creating new jobs could give a chance to the unemployed
people, it doesn t mean for the entire number of unemployed individuals. Opportunities are given
more for the higher income households or advantageous individuals. Also, large number of jobs do
not matter to the people who are not even interested in the particular jobs. Even though U.S
economy provided plenty of jobs, it did not help to abate the unemployment rate. As a result, it
couldn t be a real solution for the unemployment issue. On the other hand, compare to the previous
solution, there are more solutions which are capable to be the solutions. First of all, immigration
reform. According the previous solution, which is the U.S economy providing more jobs, it could
not solve the unemployment problem. However, if the

The Power Of Master And Slaves In The Antebellum Period
Throughout the Antebellum Period, masters and slaves had a relationship similar to an owner
and a piece of equipment today. Society viewed slaves as objects and the legal system viewed
slaves as property of their owners. In State v. Mann, a case in which John Mann shot and injured
Elizabeth Jones slave, Lydia. Mann had hired Lydia for a year. Judge Ruffin wrote, The power of
the master must be absolute, render the submission of the slave perfect. This shows that planters
believed that violence and complete power was the key to maintaining slavery, but rather this
ideology accelerated slave resistance and Northern abolitionism, ultimately leading up to
emancipation. The extent to which slave owners oppressed their slaves made it inevitable that
slaves would attempt an escape or openly revolt against their masters, as well as spark abolitionist
ideas in the North.
The legal system saw slaves as property, as opposed to human which made it easy for slave
owners to punish their slaves however they pleased. In State v. Mann, the North Carolina Supreme
Court ruled that owners had full ownership over a slave and couldn t be guilty of punishing them
in any way. In Judge Ruffin s quote, The power of the master must be absolute, to render the
submission of the slave perfect, we can see that white planters thought the solution to preserve
slavery was by shifting the power dynamic between slaves and masters completely to the masters
side. Although John Mann injured the slave beyond

Although craft brewers use a number of unique additives to their batches to get the right flavor,
such as fruits, nuts and honey, the major necessity is hops. Although hops can be sourced
globally, the market demand is steeply rising will inevitably drive up the cost. Larger macro
brewers will have both the financial leverage and the economies of scale to get the best of what
is around, leaving microbrewers and nano brewers to source elsewhere. There is also the
consideration of price strategy in the market. Craft beer is known for its higher cost of
production and higher purchase price to consumers, but as the trends in micro and nano
breweries expands the question remains as to if they will take on a similar pricing model to that
of the macro brewers in the United States. Currently, the pricing trends amongst macro brewers
are almost solely based on a single manufacturer, as noted by Robert Uihlein, Chairman of the
Schlitz Brewery, a price increase is needed, but it will take Anheuser Busch to do it, (Rojas, p.3).
This trend has only slightly manifested itself on the smaller market and realistically has just
adhered to a standard model of pricing thus far, with little fluctuation based on demand. As an
example, there is a number of craft breweries who have become infamous for releasing their most
coveted brews on a limited basis, but price

  • 2. Ancient And Early Modern Societies Haylee Ferguson Professor Seaman History 4 27 November 2016 Ancient and Early Modern Societies Mesopotamia, China, Aryan India, and early modern Europe are all different when it comes to the way they live. Mesopotamia is known to be the land between the Tigris and Euphrates river , according to the Greek meaning. In Mesopotamia there is four primary categories of people. First is the nobles, second is the free clients who worked the lands, third is the commoners who owned their own land, and lastly is the slaves who were prisoners of war. Mesopotamia was the first civilization in history to create a detailed legal system. This system is called the code of Hammurabi. The laws differed for different social statuses and the punishments were an eye for an eye. If an awilu [craftsmen/laborers] should blind the eye of another awilu, they shall blind his eye. (Milestone Documents, Mesopotamia: Code of Hammurabi Short Version ) This punishment comes from the context of the Talion Laws and it states that the action done by the person, the punishment should be on the same level as the action. These laws were written on Diorite Stela which is a hard black stone and written in the language Akkadian. This language was spoken throughout Mesopotamia. Specifically there is 282 laws but they were quickly destroyed by king Shutruk Nahhunte. A Mesopotamian religion is different than your typical religion. Their religion focuses on different aspects of a life. For example ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sol Lewitt Although the idea of an artist creating work beyond their death might seem like a ludicrous thought to some, in reality, one might be surprised to find that the work of Sol LeWitt is still being manufactured after his late death in 2007. During the 1960s, Lewitt proposed the revolutionary claim that an idea itself could be art. Today, Lewitt s legacy still manages to challenge the notion that art must physically manifest into an object. LeWitt s conceptual art abolishes the art as an object as well as the artist s physical labor in creating the artwork as intrinsic to the definition of art. Furthermore, his framework separates human agency from the mechanical aspects of actually making the work. In spite of what most people think, not all art is the unique product of a disciplined master. While many may argue that Lewitt created juvenile simple pieces, this artist actually introduced very complicated issues of authorship and authenticity into the conversation of art.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As he said in his Sentences on Conceptual Art, I will refer to the kind of art in which I am involved as conceptual art. In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work. When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art. When LeWitt first made his wall drawings in 1968, he demonstrated how art could be approached in a systematic and objective manner. In this body of work, LeWitt establishes ideas that are translated into written instructions. In doing so, the various compositions of lines, colors, and shapes, conceived by LeWitt become executable by anyone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Soccer Descriptive Essay As I put my black and gold jersey on, I thought of the outcome of tonight s game. Either the Penguins come out as champions, or they are forced to game 7. I walked downstairs to put my shoes on, and I saw my brother with his black and teal jersey on. We headed to the car. My mom was already annoyed by how much my brother and I were fighting over who would win the intense game. Finally, after a couple of minutes, we journeyed to the big game. After a long ride, we finally entered the streets of Pittsburgh. We sensed the excitement and tense atmosphere of the city. Everybody crawled the streets getting ready for the big game. When waited in line, it seemed like the whole city tried to rush in. The line took about 45 minutes, but it seemed like hours. Finally, as we went through security, we were dogs released from a cage. From the time we found our seats until the beginning of the game, more and more people filled the massive arena. Many people filled the seats up like sardines. When everybody arrived to my favorite place, we all waited for 8 o clock, the start of the game. By the time 8 o clock came around the crowd already filled with excitement. When it was time for the national anthem, everybody quieted down in order to respect the flag that represents everything that allows us to be in that moment. The whole arena stood in silence as the red, white, and blue banner flew over. When the words, the home of the brave filled the air, everybody started to scream again. ... • 5. Importance Of The Human Genome Project The Importance Of The Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project(HGP) provided valuable information that changed biology and medicine. Beginning in the 1990 s a research project was created with the intent of determining the sequence of nucleotide base pairs that made up human DNA. The Collaboration was key to completing this project, it was an international project that required, funding, certain technologies, and research methods. The Human Genome project provided important information that benefited medical science. This project helped scientist understand different genetic diseases that plagued mankind and opened the doors to many other scientific findings. Although the Human Genome Project was met with initial resistance it has proved to be significant in many aspects of science. The Human Genome project was widely anticipated, the possibility of understanding human disease, causes of disease, and human evolution was at the forefront of science. In 1985 a project was formally proposed with the goal of determining the complete nucleotide sequence of the human genome. Although the proposal had the possibility to change science it was met with much resistance. The main concern was privacy of genetic information, educating health care professionals, and ethical issues involving the design of genetic research. Finally, in 1990 under the direction of U.S. department of energy and the national institutes of health the Human Genome Project was officially initiated in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. What Is The Theme Of Class Antagonism In The Take By Klein... In the movie The Take by Klein and Lewis, I have identified several themes of relevance to Marx s writings: the problem of capitalism, exploitation, poverty, alienation, and the working class struggle. The observations I have made about Argentina as a rich country made poor by the mismanagement of capitalist policies, the subsequent consequences of poverty and unemployment, and the eventual expropriation of business by factory workers, can be theorized by Marx s concepts of the labour theory of value, estranged labour, and religion as the opium of the people . Nevertheless, the sub urban Buenos Aires society differ in several aspects from the society described by Marx, especially in Marx s idea of class antagonism, challenging Marx s ideas... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike Marx s methodological theory of the proletariats realizing their class consciousness and becoming a class for itself as opposed to the bourgeoisie, The Take suggests that the antagonism between the two classes is not that easily defined as binary opposites. For example, the closet Menem supporter at the Forja factory is seen as a traitor to his cooperative group, yet he is not a bourgeoisie by status. The people and activity that fall in between the spectrum of extreme opposites of division of labour and no division of labour, of bourgeoisie oppressing the proletariats and the proletariats being oppressed, are being ignored by Marx s theory of class antagonism. In conclusion, The Take presents several points relevant to Marx s writings on the problem of capitalism, exploitation, poverty, alienation, and the working class struggle. However, the sub urban Buenos Aires society differs in several aspects from the society described by Marx, challenging Marx s idea of political revolution, absolute binary opposites in class struggle and the sustainability of his communist model in the context of the 21st ... • 7. Ancient Rome And The Roman Empire At its height, the Roman Empire was the most extensive political and social structure in western civilization. The remains of this empire can still be seen today. The empire was filled with advanced people and technology for its time. The Roman Empire has rich history, helpful geography and resources, provinces, an advanced government, and unique people and culture. Ancient Rome can be divided into three main parts. The Roman Monarchy, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. The Romans believed that a man named Romulus founded the city of Rome . The legend is that Romulus and his twin brother Remus were cast away in a basket on the Tiber river. A she wolf found them and gave the twins her milk. The farmer and his wife, owners of the she wolf, found the twins and raised them from there. Later in an argument, Romulus killed Remus and then founded the city of Rome on April 21,753 B.C. Historians still do not know how much of this legend is true or if it is true at all. Either way, Rome is named after Romulus. The Roman Republic moved on to the Roman Empire because of a man named Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar was a cunning politician who centralized government around himself. The people of the Roman Republic feared that Caesar would make himself king and end the republic. Due to this fear, Julius Caesar was stabbed to his death outside of the senate building on the Ides of March on March 15, 44 B.C. The concept of one man ruling continued with Julius Caesar s ... • 8. The King And The Chessboard Of Wheat Humans have many methods to describe large numbers mathematically. Ever since the invention of the concept of zero essential to the ancients for keeping good records of various transactions humans have been using mathematics to describe ever larger quantities of items. The story of the king and the chessboard of wheat demonstrates that while humans have been using large numbers since the dawn of history; using and comprehending are two entirely different things. In the story, a king tells a clever mathematician that he may ask for any reward he wishes for his services to the kingdom. And so the mathematician asks for one grain of rice to be placed on the first square of a chessboard, and then double that on the second square, and then double the second on the third, and so on. By the time all the rice would be added up, it would equal well over the production of rice in the entire modern world! Needless to say, the mathematician did not receive his reward . The same concept applies to time, at some point the human mind ceases to differentiate between larger and larger timescales. Like the king and his chessboard, we have trouble contemplating the vast eons of time that lie between us and the creation of the earth. Each day seems like a grain of rice, so small that it seems as though they could never add up to anything substantial. However, looking back allows us to put ourselves into perspective. By examining history, we can see that we have been on this planet for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Justice Should Not Be A Solution Justice Is Up To Us From the very beginning, people have fought. Rather it be over food, shelter, land, or money, these disagreements have remained ever present in our societies. Where there is disagreement, there must eventually be a solution. Most of the time this solution can come from the individual, or individuals, involved in the disagreement. When necessary, a third, impartial party is to step in and fairly decide what is to happen. Out of all the commotion, no one ever stops to think, What do I want to happen here, or better yet, How do I want this to happen? In a country christened land of the free, home of the proud, it is appropriate to assume that everyone gets a fair trial, that everyone is treated equally in the eyes of the law, and that the government does everything in its power to protect the innocent and prosecute the bad guys. But that s not exactly the way things work in America. In the land of the free, home of the proud, the court rooms continue to be influenced by personal prejudice and the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill continue to remain unrepresented. In efforts to better the nation, the principle of the nation must be upheld and the values of America must be preserved. Throughout the history of America, prosecution has persisted. From the moment that white men arrived, confrontation over the ownership of other humans has existed. Some saw this ownership as fair, others did not. • 11. Nature Themes in Hurston’s Novels, Their Eyes Were... Nature Themes in Hurston s Novels, Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the Suwanee Nature themes resound throughout Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the Suwanee. Perhaps two of the most notable instances where the lush Florida scenery augments the novels plot lines are the tree scenes , in which Janie kisses Johnny Taylor beneath the pear tree in Their Eyes Were Watching God (p. 10 12) and Arvey loses her virginity to Jim beneath the mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee (p. 37 pp. 50 53). Close readings of the two passages reveal sexually charged language. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, the pear tree s barren brown stems and the snowy virginity of bloom are referenced, possibly emphasizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Janie s revelation about her sexuality, she longs to be a pear tree any tree in bloom! This metaphor for Janie s youth and vitality suggest she is in the spring of her life, with her glossy leaves and bursting buds and struggling to make sense of the marriage that is buzzing through the air with bees. Thus in this scene, Janie crosses the threshold from childhood to adulthood, a passage made complete by her hasty marriage to Logan Killicks, a man far beyond the tumultuous spring of youth that Janie is in the midst of in this passage. The passages with the mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee focus more on a sense of rebirth. When Arvey first takes Jim to the mulberry tree, it is because she wants a cleansing of her sacred place from her old feelings for Carl. The images of the new mulberries growing perpetuate this theme of rebirth in this scene. The word green also repeats itself, implying a sense of youth. This is not so much maturation for Arvey (as it was for Janie) as it is a rebirth, a changing of her ways as well as an introduction into sexuality. The actual scene where Arvey loses her virginity is rife with violent images; the tearing have cloth, the gritting of teeth, juxtaposed against images of passion. It is ironic that this should occur in her green temple of peace, but at the same time, Arvey is essentially finally crossing the bridge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Comparing Three Chaplin Movies Essay After seeing three Chaplin films at this point in chronological order it is not hard to notice the extreme difference from the film City Lights to Chaplin s earlier films Mabel s Predicament and The Pawnshop . In terms of cinematography it is real easy to see the differences in these films. To begin the cinematography is different in that in the first two films most of the shots are wide shots and with very minimal cuts. Also the lengths of the first two films are very short Mabel s Predicament is only 11 minutes long and The Pawnshop is 29 minutes long. The lack of cuts and the shorter runtime of the films indicate already it is of a shorter budget because the films were limited in terms of how much they could film. One of Linda s most significant figures in her life, her grandmother also plays an important role in protecting her from Dr. Flint. It is clear that Slave masters have so much power over their slaves, so it is highly unusual that Dr. Flint is not able to exercise this power to fulfill his lust for Linda. Therefore, there is something else which would interfere with his power which is the fear of her grandmother, and her place in society. Dr. Flint, who because of his place in society has to maintain a respectable reputation, knows he can not afford to have rumors smearing his name. Because Linda s grandmother is known for her integrity, any accusations coming from her, will hurt his reputation significantly. His only hope of keeping the affair a secret, is to gain Linda s consent. Therefore he uses many tactics including bribing her with a private cottage, threatening to send her to plantations, and even trying to use sweet words to win her over. His big government spending and policies were responsible for leading our fragile country into one of the worst economic recessions ever. However, this all changes in January of 1981 when President Ronald Reagan was sworn into office and came to our country s rescue. Reagan stepped in ready to mend the deep scars left behind by setting forth an economic plan, Reaganomics, in hopes to bail out our sinking country. Though many may say Reagan s conservative ways had this plan favoring the upper class, this was not the case. Supply side went off the idea that, tax rates affect a person s incentive to work, save, and invest. To put it simply: lower tax rates create more economic energy, which generates more economic activity, which produces a greater flow of revenue to the government (Gramm, Phil). This was known as the Laffer Curve. When Reagan first came into office he was dealing with marginal rates at about 70% of returns on savings and investments, but as he left office, 33% was the highest rate in the tax code which even dropped to 28%. These tax rates led the nation to one of the longest peacetime recoveries economically (Gramm, Phil). Before people can blame Reagan for stealing from the poor we must look at the overall effects of his plan that seemingly led America out of a deep recession. First of all, the tax cuts that he implemented were for ALL Americans. That means the rich, the poor, African Americans, and even the disabled. These tax cuts were a positive incentive for everyone, which in turn helped to stimulate the economy. In Reagan s Radio Address to the Nation in 1983 he explains how much trouble Carter s double digit inflation negatively affected the country. Gardner argues that there is a wide range of cognitive abilities, and that there are only very weak correlations among them. For example, the theory predicts that a child who learns to multiply easily is not necessarily generally more intelligent than a child who has more difficulty on this task. The child who takes more time to master simple multiplication 1) may best learn to multiply through a different approach, 2) may excel in a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They may enjoy acting or performing, and in general they are good at building and making things. They often learn best by doing something physically, rather than by reading or hearing about it. Those with strong bodily kinesthetic intelligence seem to use what might be termed muscle memory , drawing on it to supplement or in extreme cases even substitute for other skills such as verbal memory. United Nations and World NEO COLONIALISM Neocolonialism describes how, after World War II, colonial powers started using economics i.e. lending and interest rates, to control former colonies and cultivate new areas, thereby creating political, economic and social dependencies. Neocolonialism describes certain economic operations at the international level which have alleged similarities to the traditional colonialism of the 16th to the 20th centuries. The contention is that governments have aimed to control other nations through indirect means; that in lieu of direct military political control, neocolonialist powers employ economic, financial, and trade policies to dominate less powerful countries. Upon gaining independence, some national leaders and opposition groups argued that their countries were being subjected to a new form of colonialism, waged by the former colonial powers and other developed nations. In Africa, the French played a prominent role in charges of conducting a neocolonialist policy, and that French troops in Africa were (and it is argued, still are) often involved in coups resulting in a regime acting in the interests of France but against its country s own interests. Denunciations of neocolonialism also became popular with some national independence movements while they were still waging anti colonial armed struggle. During the 1970s, in the Portuguese colonies of Mozambique and Angola, for example, the rhetoric espoused by the Marxist movements FRELIMO and MPLA (respectively), which were to eventually assume power upon those nations independence, rejected both old colonialism and neocolonialism. However, when it comes to race, there are privileges not many of us have the opportunity to take advantage of because on our ethnicities. The word racism can have different meanings depending on what your own viewpoint is. Racismhas been common for plenty of decades and in fact, is very popular today. In fact, well known speakers such as Beverly Daniel Tatum and Peggy McIntosh provide their own viewpoints on the common topics of raceand racism. First, Beverly D. Tatum s viewpoint on racism is that she does not see it as an act of hate, but rather she sees it as a system of privileges based on one s own race (Sweeney, 33). Tatum makes it clear throughout this excerpt that race determines the privileges you are guaranteed to receive and the fact that those privileged individuals do not notice the power they have compared to others. She connects the idea of white privilege with her definition of racism, and clearly states that racism could also be connected with people of color; however, people of color are not racist because they do not benefit from racism (Sweeney, 37). Tatum gives many examples of White privilege to support her idea that racism is a system of advantage based on race. For instance, Tatum talks about one of her students who was a White male that was in her psychology of racism course and that he did not know how advantaged he was until the end of this class. To avoid sin, one can either follow the law through the legal system, or you can understand the law through one s faith /relationship with God; either path would hopefully allow someone to avoid sin as much as possible. Lastly, Augustine also explains how he believes that free will and the body are two distinct things. In fact, Augustine describes lust (Augustine XI.16) as a type of wrongly directed will that is common among humans, but explicitly states how this will takes possession of the whole body and moves the whole man (Augustine XI.16) into bodily pleasures. It is good to see someone who has victimized others to be locked away for as long as possible and receive a just punishment . As part of the second step, my ultimate goal was to ensure that David received a fair punishment and reduced his likelihood of recidivism for similar actions. The third step involves inventing options for mutual gain. In this type of situation you do not want the defendant to gain anything, but if the defense does not feel they are getting something in return it can drag out the legal process and frustrate both parties. The Post War Period Of Italy The post war period in Italy represents a time of cultural, economic and political instability, as the nation tried to re create the social bonds broken by the war and attempted to understand, and take advantage of, the effects of mass industrialisation and urbanisation thanks to the economic miracle . It was during this time from 1945 to 1960, with the people increasingly disenchanted with the ability of the camera to truly portray the turmoil of recent history, that a new form of popular, neorealist cinema emerged to reflect social reality and expand the viewer s moral, cultural and geographic perspectives . This instability and new cinematographic outlook was the backdrop for two pertinent Italian films: Rossellini s Roma CittГ Aperta, an authentic depiction of the daily lives of Italians in Nazi occupied Rome, and Visconti s Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli, the journey of one Southern Italian family as they migrate to the North during the economic boom in search of prosperity. For both of these films, the ideas of resistance and struggle are two closely linked themes which play an integral part in the portrayal of this period of Italian history. In order to gain a more insightful understanding of how each of these are conveyed in Roma CittГ Aperta and Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli, it is beneficial to analyse these films with reference to two sub themes: resistance to oppression and economic struggle. As a result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpetremained vital parts of each song throughout the concert. Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, Sleepy Time Down South, before formally introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the tempo was consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the opportunity to each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion. Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco and was named Indiana. In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the performer s immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from beginning to end.
