Harrison Bergeron Dystopian
Kurt Vonnegut s dystopian story, Harrison Bergeron , takes place in 2081. It is a story about everyone
being equal, nobody is smarter than anybody else, nobody is better looking than anybody else, and and
nobody is stronger or quicker than anybody else. This is because everybody wears handicaps to make
everyone equal to each other. But basically, one boy named Harrison Bergeron takes matters into his
own hands and goes against the Society. The Society basically makes all these people wear their
handicaps all the time. One lesson the story suggests is that you should never be afraid to stand up for
what you believe in, like Harrison.
In the beginning of the story, (Page 2) Hazel tries to make George stand up for what he believes in by

She shot them in front of everyone in the room. While this could actually be a really good point
because they did get shot and killed, it fails in one region of thought to me and probably other people
thinking like me also. I think that Harrison Bergeron and the ballerina s act actually did pay off for
them in my line of thinking. I think that them standing up for what they believe in really did pay off
for them because even though they got shot, I think what really payed off for them is that they instilled
the thought of everyone being equal, and the government (or Society) holding them to that, is kind of
crazy and that the people of his world should fight for what they believe in. So, Harrison Bergeron and
the ballerina actually stood up for what they believed in and taught people that they too, should stand
up for what they believe in, and that they, and anybody, can really make a difference with just a couple
of opinions and a couple of words being spoke by the people of the country that you, and others live
and dwell in. For example, in the moment of the story when the ballerina rose, it wasn t because she
wanted to be Harrison Bergeron s wife, it was because she wanted to stand up for what she believed in
with him. The moment in the story is described as, I

How Does Cronus See The Titanomachy As A Battle Of Good...
After this week s lecture I do not see the Titanomachy as a battle of good and evil. Zeus and his father
Cronus are in battle because Cronus has decided to swallow all his children, but he was tricked when
it came to his sixth son, Zeus. As Zeus was sent to another island, Cronus was given a stone to
swallow instead of his actual son. When the father and son battle each other I do not see it as a battle
of good and evil. Zeus is simply fighting for his brothers who he eventually gets back from his father
Cronus. Cronus himself went against his father Uranus. That is the main reason I do not see the
Titanomachy as a battle of good and evil because I would not know who to select as good and who to
select as being evil. Instead, I see the

Norman Bates Psychology
Norman Bates is an 18 year old Caucasian male. Norman was one of two children born into a lower
middle class family with an abusive father and controlling mother. Norman s father passed away due
to an accident in their home when Norman was a young boy (around the age of four). His mother is
obviously the most prominent figure and influence in his life. After his father s passing, Norman and
his mother move to White Pine Bay. Norma, Norman s mother, begins a new life for them there. She
buys an old motel that she plans to run. Norma and Norman are remarkably secluded from nearly
everyone; this is the way that Norma prefers it. Norman attends White Pine Bay High School where
he does fairly well academically, but has behavior problems. Norman is the center of many criminal
cases in White Pine Bay (mostly murders). Norma controls nearly every aspect of Norman s life. This
causes several interpersonal relationship problems with outsiders. Norman begins to have friends, and
even a girlfriend, but his mother continuously puts the relationships under a microscope. He seems to
generally take on the same opinion about a person as his mother does. Dylan, Norman s older brother,
reenters their life soon after they move to White Pine Bay. Dylan is the product of Norma s brother
raping her when they were young teens. The arrival of Dylan causes tension between Norman and
Norma as several aspects of their old life are brought back up questioned. This cause more and more
anger and trust

Disadvantages Of Hexane
1.1 Background
Recently, the world is facing with an energy crisis due to the depletion of resources and increased
environmental problems. Referring to this issue, search for alternative fuel is very important, which is
not only sustainable but also environmental friendly (Barnwal and Sharma, 2005). Jatropha curcas is
consider to be the best sustainable and become popular sources due to the demand for biodiesel.
Jatropha curcas L is a hardy plant and it belongs to the euphorbiaceae family. However, Jatropha is
commonly known as Jamalghota. It can grow to 20 feet high under favorable conditions and act as
drought resistant. One of the main properties that associated with the plant s hardiness and its
sustainability in the hot and dry climate. It can survive in high temperature conditions. This type of

Cezanne, Lowry and Landscapes Essay
Cezanne, Lowry and Landscapes
Cezanne
Paul Cezanne, who was the son of a wealthy banker, became a painter in the 1860s in Paris when he
quit his studies of Law. By 1874 he was painting landscapes in the Impressionist manner and had
some of his work included in their first exhibition held during that very same year. He painted in the
Impressionistic manner, but sheared off in a different direction to the main body of Impressionist
painters. The main body of Impressionist painters were concerned with the fleeting effects of light and
colour , and in order to capture the surface impression of that moment they had to work fluently and
quickly . s analysis was far more prolonged and pains taking; He spent so long

But as they dissolve into tonal marks we are still conscious of the reality of the scene, the way the road
twists out of sight past the rocks into a cool tree filled valley. His way of working is so explicit; as we
look at the surface of the picture we are aware of his every brushmark, and we can imagine his subtle
colour mixing and careful balancing of colour and tone. He used colour not to fill in outlines, but, as a
true colourist used it to create forms. He believed that colour and line were inseparable and interwove
them, applying one over the other in his work. His angled brush strokes set up a nervous sense of
agitation in his late works like Route
Tournante . This may be a combination of his irascible temperament with an ageing painter s
awareness of the need to realise his objectives while he still had time.

Society On Differences And The Impact Of Social Factors On...
Impact of Social Factors on Individuals and the Society on Differences in Health, Life Expectancy and
Achievement between Social Groups using two Sociological Perspectives. The issues of health, life
expectancy, and achievement between social groups are very important components of life for any
individual. The World Health Organization defines health as a state of thorough and total physical,
psychological, mental, intellectual, and social well standing. Therefore, health should not be
interpreted as simply the absence of illness or medical infirmity. Life expectancy refers to an
arithmetic or numerical measure of the mean number of years a person is prospected to live on earth,
with respect to factors such as the year of birth, the number of years already lived, sex, and other
demographic determinants. Achievement, on the other hand, is defined as the level of relative success
in the society after the attainment of a certain goal or objective. This is perceived by and in
comparison with the other members of the society. According to Tajfel (2008, p. 15), achievement is
thus measured using certain common parameters. These three components of life in the society have
acute and divergent differences and are majorly responsible for the dichotomy of social life. There are
some vital social factors that control these differences which include family size and structure,
religious beliefs, wealth, lifestyles, education level, and population growth rate. While discussing the

Organic Farming Produces Organic Food
Eat it if you can Pronounce It The word Organic can be defined in multiple ways but what the word
basically means that the product is derived from living matter. Organic farming produces organic food.
The goal is to encourage soil and water conservation, reduce pollution, and constrain conventional
methods to fertilize and control weeds. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration The term
organic is not defined by law or regulations FDA enforces. Foods that are organic does not necessarily
mean that they are healthy. There are organically refined unhealthy foods such as wholesome branded
cane sugar and Applegate branded pork sausages products that are labeled as organic but is obviously
not the healthiest choice. Labeling a food product as organic does not make consumption completely
healthy for infants. Drug Administration Organic produce derives from farming involving growth
without using any type of genetically modified organisms, synthetic fertilizers, sewage, and pesticides.
When meat products are organically refined the animals the meat comes from do not receive any
antibiotics or hormones that manipulate growth increase. The department of the United States
government that is responsible for programming anything related to food, agriculture and nutrition
(USDA) defines organic as food produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources
and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations.

A Research Study On Celeste Kidd s The Marshmallow Challenge
Many psychologists have studied and used Mischel s experiment and examples in their own works. In
a recent study, Celeste Kidd conducted one such experiment; in The Marshmallow Challenge Kidd
had twenty eight children take part in an exercise involving art. She gave the children two different
choices throughout the project. The first choice she gave them was to use old worn down crayons now
or wait for a new box of crayons. The second was one small sticker now or wait for a better set of
stickers. She divided the children into different groups. One of the groups was the reliable group
which was the children that waited patiently, and the other group was the unreliable group which was
the children who couldn t wait for the new supplies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the researcher s opinion, this could be as much about the long term effects of having an unreliable
world view as it is about a lack of self control (Kidd 871). So it is obviously extremely important for
children to be raised in a trustworthy, dependable environment in order to learn self control and to be
able to use their willpower to self regulate.
In December 2011 Suleyman Avci conducted a study on 508 first grade students to learn the
relationship between self regulation and the delay of gratification in doing well in academics. Most
people are aware the more time they put into something the better the results will turn out and the
bigger the reward will be. This theory applies to almost anything including academics. The more one
studies the better they will do on a test however, not all students understand this, which explains why
some students are more stressed than others. In order to perform well in school students need to set
goals for the future and not get distracted by things in the present, like watching television or playing
video games, instead of studying for a test. I am completely aware of this; nevertheless, it is still hard
to do because my hot system wants the instant gratification of doing something fun rather than
homework. Future success is hindered by the need for instant gratification. Students who achieve
higher levels of academic success are those who realize academic rewards are more important than
temporary satisfaction. Those

The Most Dangerous Game Essay
The Most Dangerous Game Essay How would it feel to suddenly go from being the hunter to
becoming the prey? That is exactly what happened to Rainsford, one of the main characters in The
Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. Rainsford was a big game hunter who accidentally fell of
of his yacht. He swam to a nearby island, and there he met General Zaroff, a cruel man who hunts
humans for sport. In exchange for release from the island, Rainsford agrees to be hunted by Zaroff.
Consequently, Rainsford is a survivor because he kills Zaroff and wins the game. Rainsford is also a
survivor because he demonstrates the qualities that a person must have to be considered a survivor.
Although Rainsford is a survivor, Zaroff is not. To be considered a survivor, a person must go through
a traumatic or life threatening experience but still demonstrate resilience and determination. Holly
FitzGerald, Fitz FitzGerald and Lexi Youngberg all demonstrate that they are survivors because they
show resilience and determination. Holly and Fitz FitzGerald were boating down the Amazon River
when they were thrown into a swamp in the middle of a storm. They were unable to paddle out and
they also could not contact anyone for help. However, they survived by eating frogs and snails and
drinking dirty river water. They were eventually found by a group of natives and they were nursed
back to health (Boston Globe). The FitzGeralds are considered survivors because they did not give up,

Essay on The New Liberal Arts

English 101
The New Liberal Arts is an article written by Sanford J. Ungar, who is a president of Goucher College
in Baltimore, Maryland. In the beginning of his article, Ungar wrote, Hard economic times inevitably
bring scrutiny of all accepted ideals and institutions, and this time around the liberal arts education has
been especially hard hit. In other words, Ungar means that recent economic recessions have made a
huge impact on what people think of going for a liberal arts degree. In his essay, Ungar lists seven
misperceptions and how he reacts to them. The most common misperception that Ungar identified is
that liberal arts degrees are no longer affordable. The cost for liberal arts education is very expensive

He wrote, The career bandwagon seems to suggest that shortcuts are available to students that lead
directly to high paying jobs leaving out frills like learning how to write and speak well, how to
understand the nuances of literacy texts and scientific concepts, how to collaborate with others on
research What he means by that is there is no shortcuts to a high paying jobs. He also implies that
liberal arts education is the only right way to prepare an individual for their future career because it
equips ones with the abilities to write and speak formally, and understandings on scientific matter or
how to cooperate with other people for your work, etc. However, I do not think he can deny the fact
that the starting salary for a liberal arts graduate is approximately $32,500 while for an engineer is
$75,000, (http://www.mtu.edu/engineering/outreach/welcome/salary/). For instant, what can a person
possibly do with his philosophy degree right after graduating? He will probably have to go for more
schooling before he can find a high paying job at some big firms or he will have to struggle a lot
before he can open his philosophy shop or publish his book. In short, a liberal arts degree will take
longer to see its worth than career education or vocational training.

A Theory Of Sexism As Ambivalence Toward Women And...
Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop a theory of sexism devised as ambivalence toward
women and validate a corresponding measure, the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI). Past research
on sexism has been predominantly conceptualized as hostility toward women. However, from a
historical and contemporary perspective, images of women have not been strictly negative. Within the
realm of sexism, images of women can also be seen in a positive manner. Therefore, Glick and Fiske
(1996) investigated the multidimensionality of sexism by examining both the hostile and benevolent
aspects of sexism.
Step 1: Item Generation Glick and Fiske (1996) used deductive methods to develop their preliminary
scale items. The item generation process was guided by theory definitions of hostile sexism,
benevolent sexism, paternalism, gender differentiation, and heterosexuality. Taking these theories into
account, Glick and Fiske (1996) labeled the two sets of related sexual beliefs (hostile and benevolent)
as ambivalent sexism. Furthermore, their theory of ambivalent sexism shares some similarities with
past research on ambivalent racism. The initial item pool consisted of 140 items on a five point likert
scale. Hinkin (1998) suggests that the statements of the items should be as simple and short as
possible, something that Glick and Fiske (1996) did seem to keep in mind. Double barreled and
leading questions / statements also seemed to be avoided for the most part. Hinkin also

Research Paper On Gallium
The discovery of such an element as gallium does not come as just any accidental discovery. Gallium
or Ga, atomic number 31 was in a long research process for fifteen years by Lecoq de Boisbaudran.
He had been meticulously studying the spectra of several chemical elements, Lecoq knew that each
and every element produces its very own and distinct pattern of lines when heated, or spectra. As
Lecoq de Boisbaudran continued his drive to learn more of the distinct element spectra, he
distinguished that the element on the periodic table between indium and aluminum was yet to be
discovered. Lecoq de Boisbaudran theorized that with gallium supposedly having an atomic number
of 31, it could be that gallium is contained within zinc, atomic number thirty. ... Show more content on

Today s Bachelor Degrees Are A Minimum
Assignment 3: Today s Bachelor Degrees are a Minimum Critical Thinking Henry Simoni Wastila
December 16, 2012 The job market and educational institutions are advancing, and outlooks towards
the bachelor s degree are unequivocally showing signs of change. While various establishments are
particularly enticed by experience, dexterities, and attitude, other establishments unquestionably
require postsecondary education from the very beginning. As the number of individuals obtaining a
bachelor s degree skyrockets, the degree becomes more commonplace (Lawrence, 2012). This
phenomenon has prompted employers to slap a Degree Required or Degree Preferred disclaimer in
their job descriptions. Logically, one would have to pose the question Are today s bachelor s degrees a
minimum, like high school degrees were thirty years ago? Arguments can be made from both sides,
but research is necessary to render a sound conclusion. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an
individual with a bachelor s degree will earn practically double in salary as opposed to a person with a
high school diploma over the course of their career. When deductive reasoning leads one to ask the
question why, three primary reasons tend to surface. The first reason is the fact that bachelor s degree
holders receive higher starting salaries. Secondly, bachelor s degree holders have an increased
probability of earning potential, which includes but is not limited to raises and promotions.

Benefits Of Immunizations
Not only does immunizations save parents money, it saves the government money. Not all people are
wealthy enough to pay for insurance, or have jobs that provide families with health insurance. Some
children are on government insurance like Medicaid or All Kids, vaccinations are paid for when on
government insurances. If a parent chooses not to vaccinate their children that are on Medicaid or All
Kids, and they become sick; the government will have to pay for the expenses of treatment. To me,
that is not fair because if the child is getting free health insurance, he or she should have to get
vaccinated to help prevent disease. If a parent cannot afford insurance or does not qualify for
government insurance, they are programs that will help

Stop-and-Frisk Policy
The stop and frisk policy could be considered a big controversy facing New York in recent times. The
whole concept behind this stopping and frisking is the police officer, with reasonable suspicion of
some crime committed or about to be committed, stops a pedestrian, questions them, then if needed
frisks the person. This policy started gaining public attention back in 1968 from the Terry v. Ohio
case. A police officer saw the three men casing a store and he believed they were going to rob the
store; this led to him stopping and frisking them. After frisking them, he found a pistol and took the
weapon from the men. The men then cried foul and claimed they were unconstitutionally targeted and
frisked. One of the biggest reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once in a high crime area, the police use every tool they have to send the message that law and order
remains in effect (Mac Donald). Knowing that police cannot take people from these high crime areas
and take away their weapons may spark fear in the residents living in those areas. Stop and frisk was
initially employed as a sort of crime deterrent, a way to keep crime off of the streets. Without this
policy, criminals will not have any incentive to stop carrying concealed weapons; this will cause crime
to rise again and citizens to live in fear.
With the abolishment of stop and frisk reasonable suspicion will have a stricter definition. In the
Alabama v. White case an officer got an anonymous tip and then detaining the men based on that tip. (
Stop and Frisk ). The case questioned whether that tip was reason enough to detain White. People
question whether the police have enough reasonable suspicion to stop half of the people that are
stopped because of the stop and frisk policy. Rolando del Carmen, a professor of Criminal Justice at
the Sam Houston State University, wrote, A stop is valid only if an officer has reasonable suspicion
that a suspect has committed a crime or is about to commit a crime... In contrast, a frisk has only one
purpose: officer protection. A frisk for any other purpose is invalid even if evidence of a crime is later
discovered (57). This clearly states under what conditions a police officer can

Karma Of Hinduism And Western Culture
Karma in Hinduism Western Culture Karma is a well known term that has been used throughout the
ages. Though it was first used through Hinduism, people from all over the world and from different
cultures have all learn its definition and use it in their daily lives. While in Hinduism, karma is a
normal part of their lives and path to God, but in Western culture, karma is normally welcomed when
there is revenge to be had or a reward to be received. In some cases it could be both. In Hinduism,
karma is basically cause and effect. It leaves no room for chances and depends heavily on personal
responsibility, so no saying that an event happened by luck, good or bad (Huston 64). This idea can
sometimes lead other outside the religion and few in to relate it to fatalism, but to Hindus that
understand it, it is not like fatalism at all (Huston 65). For them, karma allows for you to make choices
freely, but with each choice does come consequences, but not every consequence is bad. It is all
choices and consequences are all based of what the soul or jiva wanted(Huston 65). The actions of a
jiva, or the choices it makes, will all lead to an eventual life of repetition of wanting more out of life,
but if it can see past the game that it is and insteads goes after something infinite and eternal, then will
the jiva fill more complete (Huston 66). For Hindus, karma is just another part of their lives but does
not bring fear to them. Meanwhile, in western societies, karma is many times

A Picture Of The Kancamagus Highway
Painting a Picture of the Kancamagus Highway The mountains are known for cutting through the
landscape like glaciers. The Kancamagus Highway, or The Fearless One cuts through Lincoln, to
Conway, New Hampshire. Rich in history as well winding roads, and mammoth mountains are often
traveled by the fearless, and adventurous traveler. For some, they stumble upon this great beauty is
small and not appreciated, but for others the venture is a state of mind and continues to inspire long
after the visit is concluded. The Kancamagus Highway evokes the emotion of nostalgia in every
journey. Entering the area I first noticed the mountains, covered in rugs of green, gold, ember red, and
burning orange trees. The mountains were the spines of the land, holding together the whole
landscape. Off to a distance shining white pyramids could be seen. The tops of the mountains soared
up to the sky and to the heavens as to kiss the stars with the cold peaks. I was just a quiet observer of
there glorious range. They stood ghost like, and the only thing bigger then these slumbering giants
was my gaze when taking them in. As I turn from the outlook, leaving the booming mountains to my
back I notice the trees. Making up this glowing landscape were the burning leaves of the trees. The
canopy of color burned with high intensity. Each leaf was chattering in the wind making up faint
rustling, perhaps to keep the forests secret below. Nature s sympathy was conducting itself is a small

Bacon (544) notes that for every person (notwithstanding the errors which are common to the human
nature) has a den or a cave of their own, which discolors and refracts the light of the nature. Every
person has their own preferences and tastes, and this can easily refract their facts perception.
Moreover, Bacon (549) writes men usually become attached to specific speculations and particular
sciences. In his later years, Einstein worked is searching a correlation amid electromagnetism and
gravity whilst ignoring the quantum mechanics due to the verity that it was not fitting into his nature
perception. Presently, the theories of quantum mechanical theories are in essence unquestionable. This
Provides a very good illustration of viewing the globe how one would prefer it rather than how it
actually operates. The shortcomings of a person ought to be taken into consideration when observing
nature and society.
The Market place idol is illustrated as a logical hindrance that is based on language, especially word.
Bacon describes the hindrances (545) to be established through the association of men with one

This clearly indicates that the general populace can be misleading easily through the simple word
choice that one uses in describing a specific topic. This is vital since as is seen the

Each of these key factors can have a huge effect on whether or not a company is, or isn t successful.
Therefore, setting a positive first impression is significant when building a relationship with
customers. Whether that impression is over the phone, in person, or at first sight; the first impression
can set the tone for the entire customer experience. That being said, I ll be sharing my secret shopping

Summary Of Cesare Lombroso s Atavistic Criminal
In his essay, Stephen D. Arata uses Cesare Lombroso s atavistic criminal as a starting point for his
analysis of Edward Hyde. According to Lombroso s model, criminals are born not made, and can be
identified by their physical deformities such as, enormous jaws, high cheek bones, and prominent
superciliary arches. (233) They are throwbacks to man s savage past, to use Arata s words. (233) He
that, when the novel was published, many readers saw the markers of the Lombrosan criminal born
out in the physical description of Hyde; his being referred by Utterson as as troglodytic being the most
clear cut example. (240) Arata then ties the atavist description of Hyde in to the class discourse of the
period, noting how it was customary for the lower classes to be associated with atavism and physical
deformities. However, Arata believes that due to Hyde s proclivities particularly those pertaining to
vice he is meant to caricature the bourgeois rather than the proletariat. His depravities, Arata believes,
adhere those of the Lombrosan criminal, viz. an inclination for excessive idleness, love of orgies, and
an irresponsible craving of evil. (235) Such vices are not those of the destitute working class but of a
monied gentlemen , he argues, which would make him, a companion of Jean Floressas des Esseintes
and Dorian Gray, not Vilella. (235) He then references Max Nordau, who, in his book Degeneration
(1895), argued that the degenerate population consists chiefly of rich

Analysis Of Brother Can You Spare A Dime
None of us could completely understand or experience the hardships and miseries experienced by the
people during the Great Depression. However, E.Y. (Yip) Harburg the Legendary Lyricist of the 1930
s gives us a large picture of it in his song Brother Can You Spare a Dime (Chochran 284). Harburg is a
famous lyricist of several genres ranging from escapism to comedy and romanticism. In every lyric he
writes, he consistently [views it] as a means for expressing his opinions against war and in favor of
racial equality and economic justice (Chochran 285). His song, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime, was
originally composed with the help of Jay Gorney for a 1931 Broadway musical called New Americana
(Chochran 285). In this song, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unemployed, hungry, and homeless, the people were desperate to find money to support their family,
as Harburg depicts in his song. People began blaming themselves for their misfortune. They believed
that success went to those who worked hard and deserved it (Cook, Karan 415). Therefore, people
blamed themselves for the loss of their jobs and the inability to support their families during this
economic crisis. This sense of self blame and self doubt was perhaps the reason for an increase in
suicide rates during this period (Cook, Karan 415). It was during this event that Harburg wrote his
song, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? , that represented the struggles the people were going through.
As the song represented all of the Americans who built the great nation, those who had earth to plow
or guns to bear (3) and those who built a railroad (9) or built a tower (13) many were able to identify
themselves with the singer and perhaps had a much deeper understanding of the song s meaning.
Harburg strengthens his credibility and thus appeals to ethos by directly characterizing the singer as
someone the reader already knows, like the kid with the drum (20), and the reader s pal (23) who they
called Al (21). He also does this by making the singer relatable to his

Heritgae Museum Innovation
The Impact of Innovation on Heritgae Museum s identities
Sophia Borissenko, 126127973, sbor758@aucklanduni.co.nz
The purpose of this study is to define and examine the range design requirements for a variety of case
studies on heritage museums with modern intervention, each of which has a different type: internal
intervention, addition or integration. In doing so, an analysis of the impact of the case by case design
requirements that the innovation has on the building s idenity can be made. Furthermore, the literature

The aim was to preserve the architectural integrity of the ex isting building (Stott, 2014). The

Aurum Prep
Statement of Purpose
What is it that enables a trajectory changing education? At Building Excellent Schools, the answer is
rooted in sound and relentless execution on all the core fundamentals of running a school, i.e. the
academic program, school culture, and operations. At Educate78, the answer is rooted in designing a
school experience for students that is authentic to a particular community and also allows for deeper
learning. As a lead petitioner in the process of founding a school and a fellow of each of these
organizations I have been fortunate enough to observe and learn from both viewpoints. I have come to

If we can execute on the mission of Aurum Prep, we will be a proof point for schools that help
students gain a deep understanding of themselves, their communities, and how to create a better
society. To build the foundation for this, we have already worked intently with families and
community members to understand what it is they want for their children upon graduation. After
hundreds of conversations, we know that the Oakland community seeks an interdisciplinary, identity
based curriculum to help students define who they are for themselves. In response, we have crafted
each year of our middle school to help our students to address fundamental questions like who am I?
Who are we (as a community)? Who am I becoming? We have developed the initial framework and
scope for the projects our students would complete, including engaging in a genealogy/ancestry
project and ultimately writing their own self determined autobiographies. I believe it would be
incredibly powerful to learn from High Tech High s project based learning approach to we continue to
design these learning experiences. Engaging in the Graduate School of Education would help us to
more fully flesh out critical aspects of our model like these.
The Graduate School of Education is committed to developing reflective practitioner leaders who are
working with colleagues and communities to create and sustain innovative, authentic, and rigorous
learning environments. I am a leader who is seeking to design a school that is committed to ensuring
equity for all children in East Oakland. While I have experience in the school design process, being

Personality Theory Of Steve Mcgarrett
Steve McGarrett is a police officer and main character in the TV show Hawaii Five 0. While some of
his behaviors on the show can seem very strange and even dangerous, they can all be easily explained
using the four perspectives on personality. McGarrett grew up in Hawaii with his two parents and
sister, but his mom died when he was 13, she faked her death because she was a CIA agent, and he
was sent to a military boarding school on the US mainland. Steve, in a way, used repression to cope
with his mother s death by never consciously thinking about her until he found out she was actually
still alive. While he didn t have a true father figure at his military academy to replicate, he was taught
how to be the perfect man by the Navy. This is somewhat related to the identification process how a
child begins to replicate their parents values. Steve still follows many of the same routines as he did
during the Navy and also follows many similar behavioral ideals. Steve was taught that true men never
show any emotion, so therefore Steve had a never strong superego and rarely got flustered or upset.
He is always able to keeps his emotions in check and never lashes out in anger for any reason. On the
other hand, he is also very stubborn and makes many very dangerous choices without much of a
second thought, showing how his id is also very prominent. All of these personality theories can be
related back to Freud, and McGarrett is a perfect example for how they all

The Steam Railway And The Invention Of The Modern Age
The steam railway was a significant invention in the development of the modern age. I believe that the
steam engine was the most important invention to come from the industrial revolution. The expansion
of the railway system across the United States and the world influenced how we live our lives today.
Throughout the industrial revolution the steam railway reduced the time it took for freight to reach its
final destination, expanded the reach people could sell products too, provided a safer transport
compared to horses, along with countless other things. The steam railway better connected people and
helped fuel the second industrial revolution. Without it our world might look a lot different than it
does today. First, the steam railway ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, the steam railway saved fifty thousand working days of ten hours each was saved. This
translates to me as a huge savings in time and money to travel. This is also assuming that people are
only saving just 1 hour. Cars were not around at this time, so if people traveling were going further
than this the number of hours saved might be exponentially bigger than what was estimated. Britain is
much a significantly smaller country than that of the United States, and if it took into consideration the
time is would take to travel by horse across the country compared to steam railway the time would be
tremendously bigger. This time saved could be more than human savings it could also mean the
reduction it takes cargo to travel by railways compared to horses. Consequently, cargo would also
arrive safer because roads during this time were not like what they were today. Often times the horse
cart would break a wheel or get stuck in the mud. Roads at this time were not reliable and were not
always well maintained. Also, this would lead to construction projects taking much less time than it
previously would. This once more would save time in how long the project took, and save money
paying workers to build the project. Overall, this savings in time , safer cargo travel, and overall
improvements in the quality of life shaped by the steam railway system would be felt for numerous
years to

How Taxol Interrupts The Cell Cycle

2016. Unattached kinetochores rather than intrakinetochore tension arrest mitosis in taxol treated cells.
J Cell Biol. 212 (3): 307 319. Accessed 8 Feb 2016. doi: 10.1083/jcb.201412139
I. Paper Review
A. Background and Key Question
This article was about a study performed by scientists looking to investigate the mechanism of how
Taxol interrupts the cell cycle. The interval often referred to as the spindle apparatus checkpoint is
without a doubt the time frame where Taxol acts, as it is an antimicrotubule drug that is cell cycle
specific. It is understood that the structure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To make the specimen compatible with both forms of advanced microscopy, they sufficiently prepared
samples by coupling the specimen with a fluorescence that was also conductive. This technique was
accomplished with the FlouroNanogold label, which contains gold nanoparticles covalently bonded to
a fluorescence label. That way, the LM worked as well as the EM for the same set of kinetochores that
were being studied. The Hec1 protein was stained in this case because this protein naturally delineates
the structures to be studied.
C. Describe One Specific Result
The orientation between the kinetochores with respect to centromeres (kTilt) was of a larger degree in
the Taxol treated cells in comparison to the cells progressing through metaphase normally. There was
a 16° increase from 10° to 26° when cells were treated with Taxol.
D. What are the major conclusions/implications of this work?
This was a multifaceted study that simply is not given justice by my review that is limited to two
pages. Through this study, the scientists believed that the data validated that kinetochores are
significantly influenced by the Taxol treatment. This interpretation was inferred from the results in
differences in Delta (distance between Hec1 and CenpT labels within kinetochores), cTilt (angle of
centromeres from the spindles), and kTilt (angle of the kinetochores with respect to centromeres). One
of these results was described above in

Damages On The Form Of Penalties
DAMAGES IN THE FORM OF PENALTIES
Section 73 and 74 of the Indian Contracts Act, 1872 (referred as ICA, 1872 hereinafter) provide the
basic structure for enforcement, non performance and breach of contract. This paper deals with
provisions regarding penalties on breach of the contract by one of the parties. Since sections 73 and 74
of the ICA, 1872 talk about the damages to be awarded in the case of breach and such damages shall
be predefined in the contract while drafting the same and such pre estimation shall be just and of
reasonable nature. Hence making the damages Liquidated.
LIQUIDATED DAMAGES
When parties by contract assess the damages to be paid irrespective of the actual damage are
categorized as liquidated damages. Liquidated damages can be dictated to flow in two ways
1. Either by paying the sum of money due stipulated to the other party. Or
2. By forfeiting the amount already paid by the party who breaches the contract
Liquidated damages are a genuine pre estimate of damages .
DAMAGES
According to the section 73 of the ICA, 1872 the word damages has been used
Section 73 of the ICA, 1872 says that
Compensation for loss or damage caused by breach of contract. When a contract has been broken, the
party who suffers by such breach is entitled to receive, form the party who has broken the contract,
compensation for any loss or damage caused to him thereby, which naturally arose in the usual course
of things from such breach, or which the parties knew, when

Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William...
Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who
was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from
the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines
like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time
for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to
charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a
different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest
writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s
ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My
mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the
opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In
this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it.
Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when
writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the
metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his
mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been
included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the
sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the
comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By
allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking
other writer s forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to
his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks
as red as rose, or eyes

The Conditional Acquittal:
On a Supposed Contradiction in Plato s Apology and Crito

Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, in March, 2011.)
When reading the Apology and the Crito of Plato, one inevitably comes upon a seeming fundamental
contradiction between the two dialogues. The Apology presents readers with a defiant Socrates who
declares in his trial that, if acquitted on the condition that he never philosophize again, he would
continue to practice philosophy in spite of the jury s order to the contrary:

Rather, it clears the debate considerably. If the Apology passage is shown to have been made in
defiance of an illegal court procedure, then the Apology passage cannot be taken as evidence of
Socratic support of civil disobedience. Such evidence, coupled with the obedience to law proscribed in
the Crito, allows the supposed contradiction between the two dialogues to be dismissed.
In order to analyze the Apology and the Crito in relation to each other, one must first make an
assumption that has not been proven to any significant extent. One must assume that the Socrates
character within the two dialogues is both consistent and trustworthy in espousing philosophical
arguments. By accepting this assumption, one can evaluate the inconsistencies within the two Socratic
dialogues as if they were a complete, consistent whole. Following such an assumption, one can
examine the philosophy in the Apology in relation to that within the Crito with logical bearing.
In order to understand the seeming contradiction between the two works, one must understand the
passages on which it is based. The defiance passage of the Apology, when interpreted literally, does
indeed seem to contradict the obedience to the state espoused in the

Trade Barriers With China And The United States
Trade Agreement and Trade Barriers with China and the United States On July 7, 1979, the
governments of the United States and China signed the People s Republic of China Trade Relations
Agreement. This agreement basis is to further economic and trade relations between both countries on
the basis of the principles of equality and mutual benefit as well as nondiscriminatory treatment

Unilateral is one countries restrictions and no others agree. Bi lateral is agreed upon by two countries
and multi lateral is between three countries. Not all are easy to obtain but the US does have several

The specific contributions combat engineers made during this operation primarily came from within
the 82nd Airborne Division. Under the leadership of Brigadier General (BG) James Gavin, his
paratroopers were tasked with dropping in northeast Netherlands to secure bridges at the towns of
Grave and Nijmegan. The 82nd Airborne Division s primary target was securing the bridges at
Nijmegan to facilitate the Allied Forces XXX Corps, who would be arriving through Nijmegan to a
town called Arnhem. Arnhem was a town that laid on the German / Dutch border. Allied Intelligence
determined that two SS Panzer Divisions of German forces occupied that town.
Within the 82nd Airborne Division was the 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR). Assigned to the

Comparing The Scottsboro Trials And The Salem Witch Trials
In 1931, in Scottsboro, Alabama, nine young black men were charged with raping two white women.
They were tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. While the death sentences were overturned by the
Alabama Supreme Court, the Scottsboro boys still served an average of ten years in prison for a crime
that they didn t commit. While the Scottsboro trials took place over 200 years after the Salem Witch
Trials, the circumstances surrounding both cases are extremely similar. One way in which the
Scottsboro Trials and the Salem Witch Trials are similar is that in both cases, the accused parties were
eventually proven to be innocent. In the Scottsboro Trials, all of the nine accused young men were
later found to be innocent. In April 2013, the governor of Alabama officially pardoned the Scottsboro
Boys and exonerated them of any wrong doing. In 1711, the colony of Salem restored the rights and

The Development Of Byzantine Architecture
Byzantine architecture is directly related to imperial traditions, to the Christian life and culture of the
Romans. A typical feature of Byzantium is the diverse ethnic composition that includes Greeks,
Thracians, Armenians, Syrians, Copts, Jews, Avars, Slavs and many others. This diversity of peoples
and cultures influences the overall development of Byzantine architecture. Christianity is an important
element shaping the overall appearance of the Byzantine culture.
The light enters through the windows under the dome and illuminates the central ship and the bridal
space.
Procopius explains the impact of the architectural space on the light: The spherical dome, thanks to the
light, does not seem to stand on solid foundations, but seems to hang on a gold chain from the sky.
In this way one can best describe the beauty and grace of Byzantine architecture.
Byzantine architecture has undergone three stages in its development:
In 313, Christianity was officially recognized. By 326 this was the official religion of the Roman
Empire. The boundaries of the Empire were from Milan and Cologne on the west to Syria on the east
and to Greece and Egypt on the south. The new religion requires all ceremonies to take place inside
the temple, which necessitates the increase of space within the temple. This created the need for a new
architecture. This function took the basilica.

Abstract Support Vector Machine (SVM) is regarded as a good alternative of the traditional learning
classification. Terrain classification using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) imagery
has been a very active research field over recent years. Because of support vector s excellent learning
performance, it has become a research hot spot in the field of machine learning. In this paper, we
firstly evaluate and compare different features for classifying polarimetric SAR imagery and then we
will describe two SVM methods: Normal represents the one without feature selection and weighted
represents with optimal multi feature selection. Obviously, the weighted SVM returns a sparse set of
features and employs less SV s than normal. However, the performance of weighted SVM is no worse
and even better than the performance of normal one. The excellent recognition rates achieved in
experiments indicate that advanced (weighted) SVM is well suited for SAR image classification. The
good performance of the proposed methods is illustrated in three challenging remote sensing

Three Point Technique to Estimate Task Duration, Es-Ef,...
The total duration of the construction project by adding the estimated task duration serially would give
us 70 weeks. But some tasks within some activities can be done in parallel sequence or
simultaneously, which would significantly reduce the construction project completion time using the
critical path method (CPM). In this method the longest path is the critical path which runs through one
of the route in the project network diagram from start to finish. This project network diagram is
illustrated on the printed assignment page, we have 10 tasks listed from A to J. Below is an activity list
of the tasks; ACTIVITY | ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION | IMMEDIATE PREDECESSORS |

The completion time for the project would slightly increase adding the 3 weeks delay of task B to the
70 weeks estimated time for the project to 73 weeks, while the earliest finish time using the critical
path method (CPM) the task duration estimates for the project completion would increase from 39
weeks to 41 weeks.

The Universality of the Marginalize Other through Irish Film
Term Paper: The Universality of the Marginalized Other Through Irish Film Film has the unique
ability to be both deeply personal and yet universal in nature. While national cinemas have the ability
to define a country s national identity and presence in the world, they also have the ability to reach
global audiences with universal themes that reverberate through the global consciousness and tell the
stories of many around the world. Though themes of national identity and marginalized populations
can seem to be specific to their national cultures and countries, the greater more universal themes of
inequality and social strife can be found just below the surface, lending theses films a universal
appeal. In Irish film the Travelling community has often taken center stage as both the subject of
romantic notions of national identity as well as a symbol of contemporary social and economic
policies and increased globalization of modern Ireland. When dealing with the Irish Travelling
community as a symbol, the themes, issues, and concerns facing this population can become
globalized and can come to represent larger issues facing global marginalized communities all over
the world. This Universalist approach can be applied when dealing with the Irish films, Into the West
(1993) and Pavee Lackeen (2005), as well as the British film Fish Tank (2009). Not only is the
Travelling community present in each film, but also their presence can be seen as symbolizing
something different

Military Heroes Research Paper
What is a Hero? Being a hero is someone who makes a sacrifice to better others. They are not a
famous athlete or musician. My version of a hero spends twelve months at a time away from their
families. They experience physical and mental trauma. Heroes risk their life for their country. Heroes
are men and women in the United States military. People in the military spend long periods of time
away from their families during deployments. Men and women in our military miss once in a life time
events, such as their children being born, anniversaries, birthdays, and so much more. These men and
women come home to children and other family members who do not know who they are. They do all
of this to protect their country. This is one of the many reasons why men and women in the military
are heroes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

different person than when they left. Some are unable to cope with their experiences and take their
own lives. Veterans take their own lives just to keep from dealing with the pain and guilt of what they
had to do to stay alive. These men and women can also suffer physical trauma. They lose limbs, break
bones, and are burned. Some endure multiple surgeries and years of physical therapy. Very few many
people come back unaffected by their deployment

  • 2. Harrison Bergeron Dystopian Kurt Vonnegut s dystopian story, Harrison Bergeron , takes place in 2081. It is a story about everyone being equal, nobody is smarter than anybody else, nobody is better looking than anybody else, and and nobody is stronger or quicker than anybody else. This is because everybody wears handicaps to make everyone equal to each other. But basically, one boy named Harrison Bergeron takes matters into his own hands and goes against the Society. The Society basically makes all these people wear their handicaps all the time. One lesson the story suggests is that you should never be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, like Harrison. She shot them in front of everyone in the room. While this could actually be a really good point because they did get shot and killed, it fails in one region of thought to me and probably other people thinking like me also. I think that Harrison Bergeron and the ballerina s act actually did pay off for them in my line of thinking. I think that them standing up for what they believe in really did pay off for them because even though they got shot, I think what really payed off for them is that they instilled the thought of everyone being equal, and the government (or Society) holding them to that, is kind of crazy and that the people of his world should fight for what they believe in. So, Harrison Bergeron and the ballerina actually stood up for what they believed in and taught people that they too, should stand up for what they believe in, and that they, and anybody, can really make a difference with just a couple of opinions and a couple of words being spoke by the people of the country that you, and others live and dwell in. For example, in the moment of the story when the ballerina rose, it wasn t because she wanted to be Harrison Bergeron s wife, it was because she wanted to stand up for what she believed in with him. The moment in the story is described as, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Does Cronus See The Titanomachy As A Battle Of Good... After this week s lecture I do not see the Titanomachy as a battle of good and evil. Zeus and his father Cronus are in battle because Cronus has decided to swallow all his children, but he was tricked when it came to his sixth son, Zeus. As Zeus was sent to another island, Cronus was given a stone to swallow instead of his actual son. When the father and son battle each other I do not see it as a battle of good and evil. Zeus is simply fighting for his brothers who he eventually gets back from his father Cronus. Cronus himself went against his father Uranus. That is the main reason I do not see the Titanomachy as a battle of good and evil because I would not know who to select as good and who to select as being evil. Instead, I see the ... • 4. Norman Bates Psychology Norman Bates is an 18 year old Caucasian male. Norman was one of two children born into a lower middle class family with an abusive father and controlling mother. Norman s father passed away due to an accident in their home when Norman was a young boy (around the age of four). His mother is obviously the most prominent figure and influence in his life. After his father s passing, Norman and his mother move to White Pine Bay. Norma, Norman s mother, begins a new life for them there. She buys an old motel that she plans to run. Norma and Norman are remarkably secluded from nearly everyone; this is the way that Norma prefers it. Norman attends White Pine Bay High School where he does fairly well academically, but has behavior problems. Norman is the center of many criminal cases in White Pine Bay (mostly murders). Norma controls nearly every aspect of Norman s life. This causes several interpersonal relationship problems with outsiders. Norman begins to have friends, and even a girlfriend, but his mother continuously puts the relationships under a microscope. He seems to generally take on the same opinion about a person as his mother does. Dylan, Norman s older brother, reenters their life soon after they move to White Pine Bay. Dylan is the product of Norma s brother raping her when they were young teens. The arrival of Dylan causes tension between Norman and Norma as several aspects of their old life are brought back up questioned. This cause more and more anger and trust ... He painted in the Impressionistic manner, but sheared off in a different direction to the main body of Impressionist painters. He used colour not to fill in outlines, but, as a true colourist used it to create forms. He believed that colour and line were inseparable and interwove them, applying one over the other in his work. • 7. Society On Differences And The Impact Of Social Factors On... Impact of Social Factors on Individuals and the Society on Differences in Health, Life Expectancy and Achievement between Social Groups using two Sociological Perspectives. The issues of health, life expectancy, and achievement between social groups are very important components of life for any individual. The World Health Organization defines health as a state of thorough and total physical, psychological, mental, intellectual, and social well standing. Therefore, health should not be interpreted as simply the absence of illness or medical infirmity. Life expectancy refers to an arithmetic or numerical measure of the mean number of years a person is prospected to live on earth, with respect to factors such as the year of birth, the number of years already lived, sex, and other demographic determinants. Achievement, on the other hand, is defined as the level of relative success in the society after the attainment of a certain goal or objective. This is perceived by and in comparison with the other members of the society. According to Tajfel (2008, p. 15), achievement is thus measured using certain common parameters. These three components of life in the society have acute and divergent differences and are majorly responsible for the dichotomy of social life. There are some vital social factors that control these differences which include family size and structure, religious beliefs, wealth, lifestyles, education level, and population growth rate. Organic Farming Produces Organic Food Eat it if you can Pronounce It The word Organic can be defined in multiple ways but what the word basically means that the product is derived from living matter. Organic farming produces organic food. The goal is to encourage soil and water conservation, reduce pollution, and constrain conventional methods to fertilize and control weeds. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration The term organic is not defined by law or regulations FDA enforces. Foods that are organic does not necessarily mean that they are healthy. There are organically refined unhealthy foods such as wholesome branded cane sugar and Applegate branded pork sausages products that are labeled as organic but is obviously not the healthiest choice. Labeling a food product as organic does not make consumption completely healthy for infants. Drug Administration Organic produce derives from farming involving growth without using any type of genetically modified organisms, synthetic fertilizers, sewage, and pesticides. When meat products are organically refined the animals the meat comes from do not receive any antibiotics or hormones that manipulate growth increase. In the researcher s opinion, this could be as much about the long term effects of having an unreliable world view as it is about a lack of self control (Kidd 871). So it is obviously extremely important for children to be raised in a trustworthy, dependable environment in order to learn self control and to be able to use their willpower to self regulate. In December 2011 Suleyman Avci conducted a study on 508 first grade students to learn the relationship between self regulation and the delay of gratification in doing well in academics. Most people are aware the more time they put into something the better the results will turn out and the bigger the reward will be. This theory applies to almost anything including academics. The more one studies the better they will do on a test however, not all students understand this, which explains why some students are more stressed than others. In order to perform well in school students need to set goals for the future and not get distracted by things in the present, like watching television or playing video games, instead of studying for a test. I am completely aware of this; nevertheless, it is still hard to do because my hot system wants the instant gratification of doing something fun rather than homework. That is exactly what happened to Rainsford, one of the main characters in The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. Rainsford was a big game hunter who accidentally fell of of his yacht. He swam to a nearby island, and there he met General Zaroff, a cruel man who hunts humans for sport. In exchange for release from the island, Rainsford agrees to be hunted by Zaroff. Consequently, Rainsford is a survivor because he kills Zaroff and wins the game. Rainsford is also a survivor because he demonstrates the qualities that a person must have to be considered a survivor. Although Rainsford is a survivor, Zaroff is not. To be considered a survivor, a person must go through a traumatic or life threatening experience but still demonstrate resilience and determination. Holly FitzGerald, Fitz FitzGerald and Lexi Youngberg all demonstrate that they are survivors because they show resilience and determination. Holly and Fitz FitzGerald were boating down the Amazon River when they were thrown into a swamp in the middle of a storm. They were unable to paddle out and they also could not contact anyone for help. However, they survived by eating frogs and snails and drinking dirty river water. • 14. A Theory Of Sexism As Ambivalence Toward Women And... Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop a theory of sexism devised as ambivalence toward women and validate a corresponding measure, the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI). Past research on sexism has been predominantly conceptualized as hostility toward women. However, from a historical and contemporary perspective, images of women have not been strictly negative. Within the realm of sexism, images of women can also be seen in a positive manner. Therefore, Glick and Fiske (1996) investigated the multidimensionality of sexism by examining both the hostile and benevolent aspects of sexism. Step 1: Item Generation Glick and Fiske (1996) used deductive methods to develop their preliminary scale items. The item generation process was guided by theory definitions of hostile sexism, benevolent sexism, paternalism, gender differentiation, and heterosexuality. Taking these theories into account, Glick and Fiske (1996) labeled the two sets of related sexual beliefs (hostile and benevolent) as ambivalent sexism. Furthermore, their theory of ambivalent sexism shares some similarities with past research on ambivalent racism. The initial item pool consisted of 140 items on a five point likert scale. Hinkin (1998) suggests that the statements of the items should be as simple and short as possible, something that Glick and Fiske (1996) did seem to keep in mind. Double barreled and leading questions / statements also seemed to be avoided for the most part. Hinkin also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Today s Bachelor Degrees Are A Minimum Assignment 3: Today s Bachelor Degrees are a Minimum Critical Thinking Henry Simoni Wastila December 16, 2012 The job market and educational institutions are advancing, and outlooks towards the bachelor s degree are unequivocally showing signs of change. While various establishments are particularly enticed by experience, dexterities, and attitude, other establishments unquestionably require postsecondary education from the very beginning. As the number of individuals obtaining a bachelor s degree skyrockets, the degree becomes more commonplace (Lawrence, 2012). This phenomenon has prompted employers to slap a Degree Required or Degree Preferred disclaimer in their job descriptions. Logically, one would have to pose the question Are today s bachelor s degrees a minimum, like high school degrees were thirty years ago? Arguments can be made from both sides, but research is necessary to render a sound conclusion. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an individual with a bachelor s degree will earn practically double in salary as opposed to a person with a high school diploma over the course of their career. When deductive reasoning leads one to ask the question why, three primary reasons tend to surface. The first reason is the fact that bachelor s degree holders receive higher starting salaries. Secondly, bachelor s degree holders have an increased probability of earning potential, which includes but is not limited to raises and promotions. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Stop-and-Frisk Policy The stop and frisk policy could be considered a big controversy facing New York in recent times. The whole concept behind this stopping and frisking is the police officer, with reasonable suspicion of some crime committed or about to be committed, stops a pedestrian, questions them, then if needed frisks the person. This policy started gaining public attention back in 1968 from the Terry v. Ohio case. A police officer saw the three men casing a store and he believed they were going to rob the store; this led to him stopping and frisking them. After frisking them, he found a pistol and took the weapon from the men. The men then cried foul and claimed they were unconstitutionally targeted and frisked. One of the biggest reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once in a high crime area, the police use every tool they have to send the message that law and order remains in effect (Mac Donald). Knowing that police cannot take people from these high crime areas and take away their weapons may spark fear in the residents living in those areas. Stop and frisk was initially employed as a sort of crime deterrent, a way to keep crime off of the streets. Without this policy, criminals will not have any incentive to stop carrying concealed weapons; this will cause crime to rise again and citizens to live in fear. With the abolishment of stop and frisk reasonable suspicion will have a stricter definition. In the Alabama v. White case an officer got an anonymous tip and then detaining the men based on that tip. ( Stop and Frisk ). The case questioned whether that tip was reason enough to detain White. People question whether the police have enough reasonable suspicion to stop half of the people that are stopped because of the stop and frisk policy. Rolando del Carmen, a professor of Criminal Justice at the Sam Houston State University, wrote, A stop is valid only if an officer has reasonable suspicion that a suspect has committed a crime or is about to commit a crime... • 19. Karma Of Hinduism And Western Culture Karma in Hinduism Western Culture Karma is a well known term that has been used throughout the ages. Though it was first used through Hinduism, people from all over the world and from different cultures have all learn its definition and use it in their daily lives. While in Hinduism, karma is a normal part of their lives and path to God, but in Western culture, karma is normally welcomed when there is revenge to be had or a reward to be received. In some cases it could be both. In Hinduism, karma is basically cause and effect. It leaves no room for chances and depends heavily on personal responsibility, so no saying that an event happened by luck, good or bad (Huston 64). This idea can sometimes lead other outside the religion and few in to relate it to fatalism, but to Hindus that understand it, it is not like fatalism at all (Huston 65). For them, karma allows for you to make choices freely, but with each choice does come consequences, but not every consequence is bad. It is all choices and consequences are all based of what the soul or jiva wanted(Huston 65). The actions of a jiva, or the choices it makes, will all lead to an eventual life of repetition of wanting more out of life, but if it can see past the game that it is and insteads goes after something infinite and eternal, then will the jiva fill more complete (Huston 66). • 25. Summary Of Cesare Lombroso s Atavistic Criminal In his essay, Stephen D. Arata uses Cesare Lombroso s atavistic criminal as a starting point for his analysis of Edward Hyde. According to Lombroso s model, criminals are born not made, and can be identified by their physical deformities such as, enormous jaws, high cheek bones, and prominent superciliary arches. (233) They are throwbacks to man s savage past, to use Arata s words. (233) He that, when the novel was published, many readers saw the markers of the Lombrosan criminal born out in the physical description of Hyde; his being referred by Utterson as as troglodytic being the most clear cut example. (240) Arata then ties the atavist description of Hyde in to the class discourse of the period, noting how it was customary for the lower classes to be associated with atavism and physical deformities. However, Arata believes that due to Hyde s proclivities particularly those pertaining to vice he is meant to caricature the bourgeois rather than the proletariat. His depravities, Arata believes, adhere those of the Lombrosan criminal, viz. an inclination for excessive idleness, love of orgies, and an irresponsible craving of evil. (235) Such vices are not those of the destitute working class but of a monied gentlemen , he argues, which would make him, a companion of Jean Floressas des Esseintes and Dorian Gray, not Vilella. McGarrett grew up in Hawaii with his two parents and sister, but his mom died when he was 13, she faked her death because she was a CIA agent, and he was sent to a military boarding school on the US mainland. Steve, in a way, used repression to cope with his mother s death by never consciously thinking about her until he found out she was actually still alive. While he didn t have a true father figure at his military academy to replicate, he was taught how to be the perfect man by the Navy. This is somewhat related to the identification process how a child begins to replicate their parents values. • 36. Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William... Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it. Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking other writer s forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks as red as rose, or eyes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When reading the Apology and the Crito of Plato, one inevitably comes upon a seeming fundamental contradiction between the two dialogues. If the Apology passage is shown to have been made in defiance of an illegal court procedure, then the Apology passage cannot be taken as evidence of Socratic support of civil disobedience. Such evidence, coupled with the obedience to law proscribed in the Crito, allows the supposed contradiction between the two dialogues to be dismissed. In order to analyze the Apology and the Crito in relation to each other, one must first make an assumption that has not been proven to any significant extent. One must assume that the Socrates character within the two dialogues is both consistent and trustworthy in espousing philosophical arguments. By accepting this assumption, one can evaluate the inconsistencies within the two Socratic dialogues as if they were a complete, consistent whole. Following such an assumption, one can examine the philosophy in the Apology in relation to that within the Crito with logical bearing. Multi feature advanced support vector machine method for classification of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data Purnima Arora1, Dr.Paras Chawla2, Gaurav Malik3 1,2,3Electronics Communication Engineering, Seth Jai Parkash Mukand Lal Institute of Engineering Technology, Radaur, Yamunanagar, Haryana, India 135133, E mail: 1purnima5142@jmit.ac.in; paraschawla@jmit.ac.in2; 3gauravmalikece@gmail.com Abstract Support Vector Machine (SVM) is regarded as a good alternative of the traditional learning classification. Terrain classification using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) imagery has been a very active research field over recent years. Because of support vector s excellent learning performance, it has become a research hot spot in the field of machine learning. In this paper, we firstly evaluate and compare different features for classifying polarimetric SAR imagery and then we will describe two SVM methods: Normal represents the one without feature selection and weighted represents with optimal multi feature selection. Obviously, the weighted SVM returns a sparse set of features and employs less SV s than normal. However, the performance of weighted SVM is no worse and even better than the performance of normal one. The excellent recognition rates achieved in experiments indicate that advanced (weighted) SVM is well suited for SAR image classification. The good performance of the proposed methods is illustrated in three challenging remote sensing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Three Point Technique to Estimate Task Duration, Es-Ef,... The total duration of the construction project by adding the estimated task duration serially would give us 70 weeks. But some tasks within some activities can be done in parallel sequence or simultaneously, which would significantly reduce the construction project completion time using the critical path method (CPM). In this method the longest path is the critical path which runs through one of the route in the project network diagram from start to finish. This project network diagram is illustrated on the printed assignment page, we have 10 tasks listed from A to J. Below is an activity list of the tasks; ACTIVITY | ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION | IMMEDIATE PREDECESSORS | ESTIMATED DURATION (WEEKS) | A | Clearing the vacant lot | none | 7 | ... The completion time for the project would slightly increase adding the 3 weeks delay of task B to the 70 weeks estimated time for the project to 73 weeks, while the earliest finish time using the critical path method (CPM) the task duration estimates for the project completion would increase from 39 weeks to 41 weeks. CRITICAL PATH TASKS | PATH LENTHS IN WEEKS | 1. start: A B E H J finish | 7 + 14+ 11+ 2+ 8 = 33 | 2. start: A B F H J finish | 7 + 14+ 10+2+8 = 41 | 3. start: A C G H J finish | 7 + 12+ 3+ 2+ 8 = 32 | 4:start: A C F H J finish | 7+ 12+ 10+ 2+8 = 39 | 5: start: A D H J finish | 7 + 9+2 + 8 = 26 | 6:start: A D I J finish | 7+ 9+ 6+ 8 = 30 | Figure 1.4 The expected project completion time using the critical path method would increase to 41 weeks. 1. • 48. The Universality of the Marginalize Other through Irish Film Term Paper: The Universality of the Marginalized Other Through Irish Film Film has the unique ability to be both deeply personal and yet universal in nature. While national cinemas have the ability to define a country s national identity and presence in the world, they also have the ability to reach global audiences with universal themes that reverberate through the global consciousness and tell the stories of many around the world. Though themes of national identity and marginalized populations can seem to be specific to their national cultures and countries, the greater more universal themes of inequality and social strife can be found just below the surface, lending theses films a universal appeal. In Irish film the Travelling community has often taken center stage as both the subject of romantic notions of national identity as well as a symbol of contemporary social and economic policies and increased globalization of modern Ireland. When dealing with the Irish Travelling community as a symbol, the themes, issues, and concerns facing this population can become globalized and can come to represent larger issues facing global marginalized communities all over the world. This Universalist approach can be applied when dealing with the Irish films, Into the West (1993) and Pavee Lackeen (2005), as well as the British film Fish Tank (2009). Not only is the Travelling community present in each film, but also their presence can be seen as symbolizing something different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
