3. Lesson
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. Recall how simple definitions are
written.
2. Know what expanded definitions are.
3.Identify the strategies in expanding a
definition.
4. Write an expanded definition.
3
5. 1. What have you discovered about
writing expanded definition?
2. What are the different strategies used
in writing definition?
3. How will you describe each strategy?
4. Can you use more than one strategy in
writing definition?
5. How long should an expanded definition
be?
As you go around, discover the following:

Definition by
Giving
Examples
Speed is a concept that marks
our time. Everybody is in a hurry to
go somewhere. Industry is constantly
demanding new inventions that will
speed up production. The makers of
gadgets and cars boasts of their latest
products. Shoppers push and shove
each other to get to the counter first.
Yes, speed is the word of the day.

8. Expanded
Definition by
Describing a
Process
Speed is the rate at which something is able
to move. The process of speeding up a vehicle
begins with the setting of the gear level to the first
gear. This is the slowest speed (10kmph).
Gradually, you shift the gear to the next gear
where you can move from 10 to 30kmph. You pick
up more speed if you move the gear to the next at
the speed beyond 30kmph. Maximum speed is
attained when you shift your gear to fourth or
sometimes fifth that moves from 80hmph or more.

9. Expanded
Definition by
Stating the
History
Speed is the rate at which
something is able to move. The Italian
physicist Galileo Galilei is credited
with the discovery of speed. Galileo
first measured speed by considering
the distance covered and the time it
takes to cover the distance.

10. Expanded
Definition by
Comparing
Speed is the distance travelled
per unit of time. It is similar to
swiftness or fastness which means lack
of delay, very prompt or having the
capacity of moving very fast.

11. Expanded
Definition by
Contrasting
Speed is the concept that marks
our day. Sluggishness is out. Speed is
demanded by the industry who is
constantly on the look out for new
things. Sluggishness is penalized
especially on industries where salary
depends upon output.

12. Combination
of strategies
Carbohydrates are a food group
including sugars, starches and cellulose.
People mostly take carbohydrates
from rice, pasta, bread that they eat.
The human body breaks down most
sugars and starches from these food
sources. They are converted to glucose
which are later on fed to the cells.

Silly is a state of mind characterized
by having or showing a lack of common
sense or judgement. Silly can be used in a
lightly insulting way and you should be
careful using it to describe someone. If
you’ve ever been in a relationship, you know
that when love hits your system it can cause
you to act differently and, in many cases,
downright silly. For some, it’s a mild form of
silliness, like skipping around, giggling, and
acting giddy. For others, that silliness can
manifest as a lack of common sense or
judgement that leads one to act foolishly.

A watchdog is a dog that is kept
to guard a private property. The
process of turning a dog to guard a place
doesn’t start with training. Instead, it
starts with giving care and love towards
the dog. And then after some time, it
develops affection towards its owner. At
the same time, it starts to follow orders
and after that it can be trained to guard
the owner’s home.

Silly is a state of mind
characterized by having or showing a
lack of common sense or judgement.
Silly goes all the way back to Old
English, when silly meant happy or
blessed. This positive term quickly
changed. Silly became a synonym for
innocent or harmless, and then
became an adjective for something or
someone worthy of sympathy.

Watchdog can be either a dog that
is trained to guard a place or a person or
organization. Home owners, for instance,
who go out for a night can leave their
watchdog sleeping near the porch to
guard their house. On the other hand, a
municipal watchdog inspects luggage from
incoming vehicles through checkpoints.

Rich is a person who have a
great deal of money and assets. It is
the complete opposite of poor, who
lacks money and hence struggle to
meet their basic needs and demands.
The rich have money and wealth;
hence they can afford to spend
frivolously other than spending on their
basic needs, such as food, clothing
and shelter.
