Manchester.

What are the differences?

What are the differences in the location?
Opening weekends
             Why are
             opening
             weekends so
             important?

             Can you see any
             patterns
             emerging from
             the data?
How else can you watch a
          film?
Can cinema survive?
Technology
With each technology what impact has this had on
  audience and industry

  Give case study examples

Digital technology, Ipods, mobile phones, LCD TVs and
   home cinema systems, DVDs.
DVD Piracy - documentary
Who loses out?

77.5 million DVD’s sold

225 million made by pirates.

700 million lost by film industry

Its the smaller parties who lose out - film technicians etc.
Who suffers must?
Changing technologies
Internet - Burn their own off and can run copies. Do not
necessarily have to go to cinema to film.

DVD piracy - someone buys a DVD copies it for friends
and colleagues.
Consequences
Big blockbusters will be fine they can survive a dent in
profits.
“Tom Cruise may get a slightly less fee - but I am sure he
will survive”
Technicians will lose out - pay and jobs, then directors
will lose out, less funding available, audience will then
have less choice.
Some people gage if there is a need for their product/film
by seeing how fast it comes on DVD.
Movies - small to middle will fade.
Only star movies made, British film industry will stop
creativity.
No new talent training, no funding available. Retail stores
will suffer.
Who should pay the price?
What could we do to stop
          it?
Education

Outreach programmes

Simultaneous release on DVD, cinema, Internet. Bubble
by Steven Sodenbourg.
Different distribution
What else could affect
cinema attendances?
