Adrian Tomine s graphic novel, I came to find that it holds two meanings, the obvious that is the
storyline, and then the read between the lines meaning. In the text, the narrative is focused around
the standing of Ben and Miko s relationship. Ben lives in Berkeley, California with his politically
active girlfriend, Miko. In the beginning, we start to see the existing tension between the two.
When Miko decides to move to New York City for an internship, the tensions worsen. Ben meets
up with his friend, Alice Kim, and confides in her, expressing his concerns and annoyances with
the situation. While Miko is away, Ben decides to make his way around, and test the waters to see

Yet there is some undermining of Kate s freedom in the fourth stanza that suggests the lord bound

The final image of the poem takes the traditional metaphor of a child being a gift . Unlike the
possessions that bought Kate, this is something she cannot have. The contradiction in the speaker s
assertion that her son is both her shame and her pride serves to underline the tensions in the poem.
There is strong use of assonance in parts of the poem, particularly of o sounds, as in the words

There some people that are incredibly street smart but do not fair so well in school but in Gerald
Graff s Hidden Intellectualism Graff argues that street smarts are just as important as book smarts.
Graff says that It is a matter of finding points of convergence and translation, moments when
student discourse can be translated into academic discourse and vice versa, producing a kind of
bilingualism on both sides of the student teacher divide (Graff, Hidden Intellectualism). In other
words, for a student with street smarts to learn to read academically, students need to read things

consciousness. During the time in which the poem was written, many teens, especially young
African American men felt misunderstood and like the world was set up for them to fail. At
first glance, it appears this poem is a mere description of misunderstood young adults who are
enjoying their youth. However, with further analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about
much more than that. While it is obvious that this poem is about rebellious youths, it is also
about self identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd mentality describes how people
follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in no way new; moreover,

This intercultural relationship took place this year. it was with one of my co workers. We have a
friendship relationship and clicked pretty well together and rather fast. When we work together
we are very happy to see each other, as this is the only time we really see each other. Outside of
