Firstly, one must navigate the fine line between humility and self-promotion. While the essay

Nick Carraway, a young man from a comfortable background, moves from
Minnesota to New York in order to pursue business. He rents a house in the West
Egg district of Long Island, an area filled with the newly rich but considered

American Directness and the Japanese Essay
American Directness and the Japanese
American and Japanese ways of speaking are so different that they often cause
culture shock to both Americans and Japanese who visit each other s country. Most
Japanese who come to the United States are at first shocked and have a problem with
the American direct way of speaking.
Culture shock occurs because most Japanese cannot easily escape from the formula
politeness= indirectness. Compared to the American way of speaking, Japanese speak
much more indirectly. Directness is considered a form of impoliteness in Japan.
Therefore, when we want to be polite, we speak and act very indirectly. For example,
we seldom say, I ll go to a bathroom, except when we are with close friends. Usually,

Japanese are shocked by American unreserved behavior because the American way
of speech is very direct. They do not hesitate to express what they want since
directness is honesty for them. They will say, I m hungry. Why don t we go and eat
something? Japanese are surprised to see Americans in the presence of guests say, I
m hungry or Can I have another glass of juice? On the other hand, we can easily
understand what they want.
At the same time, Japanese are shocked because their way of being polite no longer
holds good in the United States. If we answer, Uh..., yes. I m hungry but only a little,
our host or hostess may postpone the meal. Later, Americans around me might notice
my stomach rumbling and wonder why I did not tell the truth.
Similarly, Japanese may be surprised to hear Americans say No often because
Japanese tend not to say No. We usually express our reluctance to accept an offer by
subtle facial and verbal expressions because we want to avoid making people feel
bad by refusing directly. For instance, a Japanese student studying might say, Um...,
yes, when asked by an American roommate if he may turn on the TV. Whereas the
Japanese student thinks his expression, Um, fairly expresses his intention of

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, comprising more than nineteen million acres

unparalleled place of natural beauty and ecological importance. The Arctic Refuge

With the past presidential campaign, George W. Bush vowed to open area 1002 to
drilling. Now he is in office, along with Interior Secretary, Gail Norton, who shares
his view. Legislation was introduced in the House and Senate in early March 2001 to
open the plain to drilling. Because of its enormous potential and the vital need for
domestic sources of oil and gas, the Department of Interior recommends that the
Congress enact
Legislation which would make this entire available for oil drilling. Ms. Norton has
been given the right to impose necessary and appropriate measures to protect refuge
resource while efficiently removing oil. Despite the remote location, it is the most
attractive onshore petroleum exploration target in the United States (В‘Resource
Assessment ). It appears that the President, his Interior Secretary, and the
Department of Interior have forgotten the first reason for creating this refuge. It
was done by humans, who valued nature, not to be opened to oil drilling and
possible development. The wildlife debate has focused mainly on the areas of
importance to the Porcupine Caribou, and other species such as polar bears, grizzly
bears, wolves and migratory birds are also at a great risk. The 107th Congress is
considering approving energy development in Alaska. Shortages of gasoline, natural
gas and the resulting increased prices have opened this debate. The events of

Different Types Of Grief
Have you ever lost someone close to you? Maybe in an accident, illness, disease, or
just natural causes. Grief is a natural part of life. It s hard losing someone
especially when you were very close to them. Eventually we experience grief at
sometime of our life. Grief is an emotion, it s hard to let it pass. It can stay with you
for a very long time. The modern stages of griefare: denial, anger, bargaining,
depression, and acceptance (grief.com). We experience grief in people s lives
everywhere in movies, books, TV shows, etc. There was a study about grief at the
University of California Los Angeles, the researchers found that 11 in 23 women
who had lost a loved one had complicated grief and the rest had normal grief.

The Robber Bridegroom Analysis
These inconsistencies and contradictions has not only broken the belief that non
fiction meant true (Atwood, In Search 1513), problematizing the absolute authority
and authenticity of historical materials, and therefore the primitivity and purity of
the authoritative discourse achieved by these official materials, but also left Atwood
a gap to fill in the light of her own need to empower the other being in the marginal
and invisible position of the power relationship to speak. By way of reconstructing
the literary canon, Atwood in The Robber Bride also satisfies this need. Joe
Weixlmann once pointed out the fact of literary canon that the vast majority of the
writers canonized in this country are white males of European decent, coupled...

Furthermore, in the novel, while listening to the story of The Robber Bridegroom,
Liz s twin daughters insisted to turn all male roles to female roles, which
corresponds to the whole theme of the novel. Grimm s The Robber Bridegroom as
a traditional European fairy tale written in 1812, more or less, inevitably, complies
with what the higher class demand in morals in keeping with the Protestant ethic
and a patriarchal notion of sex roles in attempt to educate children and appeal to
the morals and virtues of middle class readers (Jack Zipes,в…№в…№в…µ).
Though it appears a hero such as the Miller s daughter defeating the vicious man in
its ending, which seems to reverse the sex role of that time, however, in fact,
female characters cannot escape their presupposed images at all women are
delineated either as victim or as behaving goodness like an angle such as Miller s
daughter. By adapting this fairy tale, Atwood has completely reversed the sex roles
of men and women, subverting those virtues and morals of female imposed by the

Mega Events Like The Olympics And Fifa World Cup
Mega Events like the Olympics and FIFA world Cup are both tremendously
important and popular today. It is because there are so few, if any, other events that
truly inspire international cooperation and unity like they do. If one can imagine
these events as a mirrors reflecting back the organization of international politics,
the mega events show a picture of incredible harmony and cooperation (Segrave,
1988). Inherent in that picture of harmony is the opportunity to spread important
ideals such as equality, freedom, and democracy throughout the world. In addition
global mega events like the world cup and the Olympics have become incredibly
effective tools for reorganizing an economy on neoliberal grounds. The Olympics in
particular has emerged as the premier event in the international community.
However, for all its acclaim, the presentation of the games is drastically different
from the games of old. Throughout the evolution the intentions of the games has
been skewed. As a result, the modern games, as we know them portray an
interesting question politically and economically. In this chapter I will discuss the
evolution of the Games conceptually, in order to pose the ultimate question; Why
host the Olympics? The First Games The first Games of 776 B.C. in Olympia,
Greece were a time to celebrate sport and honor their religious deity. In many regards
it was considered a cultural festival by which Greek regions and cities sent their
finest athletes to compete in

Snow Lake Snow Lake is a town in eastern Arkansas near the Mississippi River.
Calling this area is a town, though, is a stretch for this town only has around 50

Another situation that shows the isolation of this area is described in the article
when Judge McElroy came into office and decided to venture all the way out to
Snow Lake. As he drove into the town he was immediately flagged down by a
citizen and questioned, he was then instructed to leave immediately. This type of
action would not be anywhere close to normal in a city or any sort of large town. It
really could only happen at Snow Lake. Snow Lake is obviously very isolated
because of its distance from a larger town but it is also very isolated due to its
geographic location. Snow Lake is located in Desha County; however, Elaine,
Marvell, and Helena West Helena are all a part of Phillips County. This is because
Snow Lake is in the North Eastern part of Desha County that is cut off from the
main portion by rivers. No bridges have been built to connect Snow Lake to the
main part of Desha County due to the few people that would benefit from the large
cost and effort. Instead, when Snow Lakers wish to visit central Desha County they
must endure a two and a half hour drive that covers over one hundred and thirty five
miles and four different Arkansas counties. The article says that while Judge
McElroy does drive this distance he prefers to fly there as it only takes twenty
minutes and is one hundred miles shorter by air. Snow Lakers seldom must drive this
distance; however, some situations might require a visit to a courthouse or a revenue
office and driving the distance may
Science Of Memory
Tips from the Science of Memory for Studying and for Life is separated into three
subsections that each cover a diverse set of tips. The first subsection covers
organizing, encoding, rehearsing, and retrieving course content. Before you can
initiate memorizing the information you must be organized. To be prepared you
should catch potential errors early on, put the information in a structure that will help
you to comprehend it fluently, and experiment with different organization techniques.
After you are organized and have removed any errors, you can begin memorizing the
information. The best way to memorize is to stay focused, process the information at
an appropriate level, make connections between the content and your life, create

The midterm is coming up fast, and I am excited that I have already completed two
of the four steps for memorizing in Experience Psychology. The first two steps,
organizing and encoding, I have completed as we moved through each session.
Encoding early on is an important step because I was able to introduce each
concept to my brain one by one as it was learned, rather than cramming it all in at
once. That leaves me with two steps to complete before I can complete my test:
Rehearsing and Retrieving. In order to rehearse, or practice, the information I have
learned I first must create the right environment. Where I am studying makes a
large impact on how well I will take in the information (Silver, 2008). I know that I
work best studying off of paper (not a computer screen), being somewhere
comfortable, and that having a familiar sound like a song I know by heart, or a TV
show I ve seen 20 times helps me to block out noise without getting distracted. By
knowing this information about myself I decided that outside in the sun with my ear
buds in would be a perfect place to concentrate for me. I also learned through both
my sources that keeping my brain healthy is important to take in information, so I ve
been getting at least 8 hours of sleep, and waking
Are Horror Movies Too Gory
In our age we are seeing a change in the type of movies we view at the theater. It
seems as if a different breed of horror has emerged from the depths of the minds of
directors. We now see even more horror movies featuring blood, guts, and gore.
Not just a simple stab , but scenes upon scenes of excessive blood and violence. This
bring us to a now relevant question, are horror movies too gory? For example, in the
movie, It, in the first few minutes of the movie we witness the first death. A young
boy, barely the age of six, was chasing his boat as it floated down the streets of his
town. It was a rainy day, and the mood was glum. His boat sails into a storm drain,
and as he looks inside of it to look for his boat a clown appears. His appearance
Controversy About Feeling Healthy About Feeling Good
Feeling okay about feeling bad is healthy
Whether we re scrolling through social media or around our circle of friends, we re
often taught to feel good all the time. From our work to our health, it always seems
to be about constantly having a positive attitude, and this can be draining. It turns out
it s okay to feel bad . Here s why.
Feeling bad feels good
Not accepting any state of emotions is just as bad, so don t deny how you feel.
Reacting to negative feelings can be damaging, but so is ignoring the emotion. It s not
so much about changing from low to high, but accepting the feeling and staying in
touch with what s going on in your mind.
Think of it as taking things for what they are. Accept the negative state instead of
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Year Round Schooling
Daytona Duncan Professor Kluttz English 3 28 July 2017 The Advantages of the
Year Round Schooling Calendar The discussion of the year round schooling
calendar versus the traditional schooling calendar has been ongoing for some time.
There have been many discussions and debates about the advantages and
disadvantages of both. The amount of school districts across the United States that
have switched to year round calendars has increased drastically. The year round
calendar provides students with more frequent breaks of 15 days at a time and a
shorter chunk of schooling for students with 45 days in school, also known as the 45
15 plan. On the other hand, the traditional schooling calendar provides longer chunks
of schooling at a time for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students who need help are given the chance to catch up during the school year,
rather than just in summer school (McGlynn 3). There are also many students that
attend my school who speak very little English. In this article, The school district,
which borders Mexico has seen its enrollment of poor students steadily increase to
50 percent since the mid 1990 s. The number of non English speakers also has
escalated (3). I believe that year round calendars can really make a difference in
not only tremendously helping at risk students, but also benefit all students across
the United States. The last major benefit from year round schooling calendars that
I am going to discuss is very important, but in my opinion is also overlooked.
Student benefits will always come first when looking at a situation such as the
traditional schooling calendar versus the year round schooling calendar, and I
agree that student advantages and disadvantages should be looked at first. But I
can t help but ask myself this simple question: What about our teachers? Will they
be on board with this? A lot of people may think that year round calendars can lead
to teacher burn out in the classroom. Will my favorite teachers at my school get
burned out? Will they quit because it is too much? On the traditional calendar, I
was wiped out by April. To do a good job as a teacher took a lot out of me; I even
thought of early retirement. Now,
Theory Of Teaching And Learning
Theory of Teaching and Learning Part 1. What I Believe about Teaching and Learning
It is my opinion that conventional teaching strategies cannot meet the requirements of
the classroom environment. First, the classroom environment has been culturally
diversified. Second, not all students have similar capabilities or work at the same rate
even if they are of the same age. Third, each student has their own learning style. In
addition, some students do not react well to the conventional strategies of teaching
and, as a result, there is a lack of learning (Heimlich Norland, 2002, p. 18). A
Constructivist teaching environment affords more opportunties for both teachers and
students, and makes learning more efficient and effective. The Montessori teaching
technique is one of the best techniques because of its eight fundamental principles
(Lillard, 2005, p. 29). These principles include: The premise that cognition and
movement are closely interrelated, and that movement can improve cognition and
learning in students. It also holds that the process of learning and well being are
enhanced when an individual or student has some degree of control over their lives.
Individuals learn well when they develop an interest in what they are being taught.
The technique also holds that associating learning activities with a certain reward
such as monetary rewards and promises for better grades, adversely affects the
learning process and negatively motivates the students to learn

Research Paper: Intel, Monopolies, and Corruption
Throughout the last 50 or so years, tech companies have risen and fall, gaining fame
and power, and marking their names in history book for achieving momentous tasks,
often in which can still be seen today. Intel is not an exception to this trend; in fact,
the mega corporation is a prime example of what American tech giants look like: Intel
has their hand in essentially every market dealing with computer components, from
memory and memory controllers, to accelerators, to their main attraction, Central
Processing Units, or CPU s, for Desktops, Laptops, and Servers. Not only does Intel
have vast reach in the computer component market, but they have complete control of
not only their production process, being for the most part self contained. From
mining necessary resources, to shipping out their complete products from factories to
their recipients, whether that be a store or an OEM. Intel is truly one of the most
successful, if not the most successful Tech giant involved with Computer hardware.
However, they only got to this place through nefarious actions, such as breaking
contracts, playing the courts to their advantage, throwing their weight around,
regardless of the legality of it, to meet their bottom lines. Considering that Intel is at
such a high position, and has pretty much always existed at a fairly high position in
the market, why? This paper will set out to find out the

Restrictions on Free Speech in Malaysia
Protecting Free Speech, by using Restrictions?
It is undeniable that the citizens of Malaysia have been granted the freedom of
speech, assembly and association, as stated in the Act 10 of the Federal Constitution.
Quoted from the Federal Constitution, every citizen has the right to free expression
and speech. However, freedom of speech is an issue which has been discussed and
argued for a long time, not only in Malaysia but all around the world. It is discussed
that how free a speech can be. Does freedom of speech mean that we can simply talk
something bad about the ruler without any evidence? Liberty (2014) defines that the
freedom of speech includes the right of every citizen in communicating and
expressing in any medium, holding opinions, receiving information ideas and
participating in demonstration and protest without the interference of the country or
government.
Although by judging solely from the definition, political expression which covers the
matters of public interest seems acceptable, it is undeniable that under the Act 10 of
the Federal Constitution, clause 2 has stated that the parliament can impose law to
restrict the freedom of speech. Such restrictions are said to protect the security of
Malaysia, privileges of Parliament and the public order. Besides, Art 10 (4) also
stated that the law can restrict the questioning of any matter, status, privilege and
sovereignty. InterNations (2014) has also explained that there are also limitations of
civil freedoms

New Historicism In And Then There Were None By Agatha...
Outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare, Agatha Christie is the best selling
novelist of all time. She is best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short
story collections, as well as the world s longest running play The Mousetrap (
Homepage ). The New Historicism Lens is a way for readers to speculate deeper
understandings of texts by relating the text to the historical era in which it was set or
written. Another aspect of this lens involves looking specifically at how the author s
life impacts their writing. Published in 1939, And Then There Were None by Agatha
Christie, continues to be one of Christie s most successful books, and with the use of
this lens, readers can observe historical happenings at the time it was written and how
events in Christie s life influenced her writing of this text.
In this text, readers are able to use New Historicism to connect the racism occurring
during the era when the book was written, to the text to gain a deeper understanding.
In this example, Vera Claythorne is one of ten guests occupying the mansion on
Soldier s Island. Once in her room she begins examining an old nursery rhyme that is
framed in her room:
Ten little soldier boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little soldier boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were eight.
Eight little soldier boys travelling in Devon;
One said he d stay there and then there were seven.

The Divine Comedy In Dante s Inferno
The Divine Comedy acknowledged as Dante s Inferno was written in the 14th
century and is an epic poem with allegorical value. Dante the Pilgrim is 35 years
old and he was midway along the journey of our life (TEXTBOOK). Dante the
pilgrim is lost in the dark wood, where he meets his guide named Virgil and he
escorts Dante through the nine circles of hell. Virgilsymbolizes human reason and
wisdom. In the beginning, Dante was sympathetic for all of the people he saw
suffering in hell, but as time goes by and as Dante gets deeper into hell, he realizes
that the suffering people are getting what they deserve. Dante the Pilgrim grow as a
character thought the story The first circle of hell is Limbo and this is where it is a
place of sorrow without torment (Dante s Inferno1). The virtuous non Christians and
unbaptized infants reside in this circle. These people are not saved, but they did
not sin. They are punished by being forced to live for eternity in an inferior version
of Heaven. They are living in a castle that has seven gates. They represent the seven
virtues. Dante sees many famous people of the past like Homer, Socrates, Aristotle,
Cicero, Hippocrates and Julius Caesar (9 Circles of Hell). He has the upmost respect
for these public figures.
In the second circle of hell is where those who committed lustful acts are punished.
They are penalized by being blown violently back and forth by extremely powerful
wind. This wind does not allow the inhabitants to find
An Essay About Michelangelo
Michelangelo was born in March, 1475 in Caprese. He was an Italian painter,
sculptor, architect, and poet. He is one of the biggest contributors to the
development of Western art today. He was also called the divine one and The
Renaissance Man . Michelangelo s ancestors before that were small time bankers.
The bank that his family was working with failed and his father had to get a
temporary governmental job. A couple of months after Michelangelowas born, his
family moved back to Florence, Italy. His mother was ill for a long time and died in
1481 when Michelangelo was just six. He then went to go live his nanny and her
husband who was a stonecutter in Settignano. Michelangelo began to admire marble
in Settignano because his father owned a marble quarry there. Michelangelo was later

When the year 1505 hit, Michelangelo was then invited by the newly invited pope,
Julius II back to Rome. When he arrived he was commissioned to build the tomb of
the Pope, this tomb had forty statues and was planned to be finished in five years.
While working on this huge tomb Michelangelo was constantly distracted by other
tasks. This caused Michelangelo to go from finishing it in five years to him taking a
whole forty years. Michelangelo was never satisfied with it though, and he never did
get to finish it to his full satisfaction. The tomb is mostly known for its statue of
Moses which was completed in 1516.
Around the same time Michelangelo also painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel,
this one took four years to complete and started in 1508 to be finished in 1512. Now
a man named Bramante hated the fact that the Pope Julius commissioned
Michelangelo and manipulated the Pope to make Michelangelo create the tomb in a
medium that he was not good with so that Michelangelo did a bad job with the
Methodology And Format Of Any Scientific Work Essay
Research design
This refers to the plan, structure and format of any scientific or statistical work. It
serves the purpose of guiding the researcher in his study and will set out the
framework to be used. Research design will basically cover the data collection
process, tools of collecting such data, how the tools will be used to collect data
and how to analyze the collected data into a useful form (Gosling, 2014). A problem
will be raised by researcher in which he will carry out his course study to draw an
answer throughcollecting data (Meyer, et al, 2012).
The research process is as follows: Statement of problem is identified( Research
problem); Making a plan how to start the actual research is determined; Determining
research type to use and Stating methods to use. The research problem will be
identified as follows:
1.Obtaining a problem you are already aware of. You may choose from social
environment and any other facts that researcher knows.
2.Asking from experts and teachers. This is also another avenue of obtaining a
research problem. Practitioners can be interviewed who will provide a much deeper
insight to a problem. This is one of the best methods since practitioners have myriad
of experience in research field and
3.Reviewing from books

Examples Of Epigraph In Fahrenheit 451
The epigraph of Fahrenheit 451, If they give you ruled paper, write the other way,
points to how Guy Montag follows this suggestion. Beginning the novel with this
quote reflects the tone and theme that Montag helps exemplify through the strictness
of society. By Bradbury inputting this quote as the epigraph, it emphasizes the
individuality that Montag embodies. If they give you ruled paper, write the other
way and do not become distracted by the parading, disillusioned world. This quote
states that when people try to force compliance on another, then there lays a choice
that involves going in the opposite direction, paving a desirable future from a new
path. Just like Montag discovers, people blindly follow the overarching beliefs that

Just in time(JIT) manufacturing technique in which numerous functional zones of
organisation such as manufacturing ,engineering and marketing are included. Just in
time(JIT) may be depicted as an augmentation of the original concept dealing with a
material flow in a factory to decrease the stock levels. Actually, there is much more

Baseball Is America s Pastime
Baseball is America s pastime. Thousands of fans every season gather in stadiums
nationwide to watch as players take the diamond. People of all ages have a love for
baseball, after all it is the all American sport. Baseball was loved by millions until
one day when the truth came out. The 1919 World Series had been rigged. Hearts
were broken and sadness spread across America. These crooked people didn t
intentionally try to ruin baseball but there were reasons why these men went astray.
People didn t want to believe it was true... but it was. The Chicago White Soxhad

Why throw the series? Why would the players get involved with gamblers? One
reason, was Charles Comiskey, the owner of the White Sox. The players were
getting really tired of playing better than almost any team but getting paid about
half as much as their opponents (Lipsyte 25). Comiskey was just cheap and didn t
pay the team what many thought they deserved. He wouldn t even pay for their
uniforms to be cleaned, there came along the Black Sox (Lipsyte 25). The first
baseman for the White Sox was C. Arnold Chick Gandil and he was the first to
meet with anyone about fixing the series (History). He met with Joseph Sport
Sullivan and finally agreed to the plan of throwing the championship in exchange
for $100,000 (History). All he needed now was the men on the field to agree with
this crooked plan. In order for this to work, he would need a pitcher and Eddie
Cicotte came to mind. Cicotte was an incredible ball player who had been pitching
big league games for 14 years. He was unstoppable, yet Comiskey paid him less
than $6,000 (Asinof 16). Cicotte was having monetary issues and needed to be
able to provide for his family. He thought the plan over in his mind and finally told
Gandil I ll do it for ten thousand dollars. Cash. Before the Series begins! . This
created a snowball effect because Gandil figured if he could get Cicotte on board he
could get the rest of the players he needed (Asinof 17). The next person he went after

St Augustine Biography Info
Augustine of Hippo was born on November 13, in AD 354, in Thagaste (modern
day Souk Ahras, Algeria), and died on August 28, in AD 430, in modern day
Annaba, Algeria (then known as Hippo Regius). It was in the latter city where he
was named Bishop 35 years prior to his death. It is a challenge to encapsulate
renowned personalities, and with St. Augustine, this task is even more difficult
(Augustine of Hippo).
A theologian and philosopher, Augustine dithered between an earlier, positive
Hellenistic outlook, and a pessimistic Christian outlook later on in his life. Shifting
from one extreme to another, Augustine accommodated several diverse disciplines
and philosophies into his comprehensive yearning to understand a world which
seemed so beset with loss, trouble and discord, in theory as well as practice.
Therefore, one of Augustine s most admired traits, and inventive elements of his
written documents, is that he could connect diverging characteristics of the four
Hellenistic schools of philosophy (Platonists, Epicureans, Skeptics, and Stoics) with
various Christian ideological doctrines.
Between Skeptic influences in Rome s New Academy to the influence of Ambrose,
The Bishop of Milan, Augustine was drifting swiftly away from Manichaeism, to the
onset of his grand

The crime novelist Ariadne Oliver attends to a lunch meeting with other writers and
fans. At this meeting, she is confronted by a woman unknown to her. The woman
is asking questions about the deaths of Mrs. Olivers friends, a seemingly happily
married couple. Seeing that Ariadne both was a close friend of the two and a crime
novelist, the woman figures that Mrs. Oliver could find out if there s something
worth knowing about their deaths. At first Mrs. Oliver is reluctant; She writes crime
stories, why would she know anything about mysteries in real life? But at the same
time she s curious to know the truth about the seemingly odd deaths. She decides to
pay a visit to a friend of her, Hercule Poirot, a well known detective. Together they
decide to investigate the matter further and as the story progresses you get the
feeling that there is an underlying reason for the womans concerns. I would say. that
the moral of this story is that things aren t always as they seem and just because
something is generally accepted as true, doesn t mean it must be true.

Cooking Is The Art And Science Of Cooking
Introduction:
Cooking is the art and science of preparing food for eating by the application of heat
. It includes full range of culinary techniques: preparing raw, cooked foods for the
table; final dressing of meats, fish, and fowl; cleaning, cutting fruits, vegetables;
preparing salads; garnishing dishes, planning meals. Origins of cooking are obscure.
Primitive humans have savored roast meat, flesh of beast killed in forest fire was
found to be more palatable and easier to chew and digest than the customary raw
meat. However roasting spitted meats over fires remained virtually the sole culinary
technique until the Paleolithic Period, when the Aurignacian people of southern
France began to steam their food over hot embers by wrapping it in wet leaves.
Aside from such hard procedures as toasting wild grains on flat rocks and using
shells, skulls, or hollowed stones to heat liquids, no further culinary advances were
made. So advancement in cooking techniques made culinary methods improved with
the introduction of earthenware and introduction of pottery during Neolithic Period .
The cooking techniques of boiling, stewing, braising, and perhaps even incipient
forms of pickling, frying, and oven baking were added. Early cooks ... Show more

Machiavelli s Beliefs In The Film, The Mission
The movie, The Mission, begins with Jesuit priest, Father Gabriel, entering the
Guarani tribe in South America. Shortly after, he is joined by Rodrigo Mendoza, a
nearby prisoner who has been seeking penance. With the intent of converting the
natives to Christianity, they were able to generate a bond that forces them to protect
each other by whatever means necessary. After a treaty transferred their land from
Spain to Portugal, Mendoza and Gabriel become determined to defend the mission,
even if they disagreed on the way they would accomplish the complex task.
Machiavelli s teaching are heavily present throughout the film, copiously reflecting
his beliefs within each community represented. Macchiavelli created an ideology that

The Arab Spring And The Middle East
The Arab Spring has largely affected the politics in the Middle East. While Tunisia
is arguably the only country that was able to find some sort of success from the
uprisings, most of the other countries were not as lucky. Being such a microcosm,
the middle east has become a place for larger players to fight for their interests
through the use of proxies. A noteworthy example of this would be the civil war that
is occurring in Syria. Pro democracy protests broke out in the Southern city of Deraa
after the arrest of some teenagers who had painted a revolutionary message on school
wall (Syria: The Story of the Conflict). When security forces responded to by opening

Western powers believed this was the result of the Assad government, while the
government blamed rebel forces. The threat of U.S military intervention proved
successful in pressuring Assad to get rid Syria of its chemical weapon arsenals
(Syria: The Story of the Conflict).
As a result of Syria s civil war, Syria has become a vacuum that has made it possible
for a plethora of rebel groups to fight and thrive. The group catching much of the
world s attention recently is ISIS, a Sunni insurgent group that has taken over
territory in much of the country and in 2014 has established itself as a caliphate in the
Capital of Raqqa. They are most notable for their extreme jihadism that has resulted
in the deaths of thousands, including public beheadings and executions. While ISIS
does not back the Assad regime, they seem to have come to an agreement where
they do not directly attack each other. In fact, ISIS sells oil from the oil fields they
have seized in Syria and sells it back to the Assad regime. The Syrian government has
also enjoyed the support from other Shia militia groups, most popularly Lebanon s
Shia Islamist Hezbollah party, who has been quintessential on the battlefield against
Sunni rebels (Gilsinan).
This proxy war has large world powers aiding in both the government, and the rebel
s favor. Iran and Russia have continued to prop up the Alawite led government and
has been gradually increasing aid as the war rages on. Tehran is believed to be

Brown And Levinson s Model Of Politeness
1.3 Politeness
Politeness is a commonsense term which refers to as showing good manners or
having respect for the feelings of others (Oxford Advanced Learner s Dictionary,
2015). The social norm view of politeness believes that a society has its own set of
arbitrary rules which determine what constitutes as good manners in any given
situation. According to this view a positive evaluation (politeness) arises when an
action is in congruence with the norm, a negative evaluation (impoliteness, rudeness)
when an action is to the contrary (Fraser, 1999).
Politeness can manifest itself in any form of behaviour and even in the absence of
behaviour. For example not returning a greeting or thanking for best wishes can be
deemed as impolite. Similarly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its central themes are rationality and face , which are both claimed to be universal
features, that is, they are possessed by all speakers and hearers. The idea of face
has been derived from the everyday terms losing face and saving face . The term
was first adopted by Goffman (1967 and 1971) who used it to describe people s
need to maintain a positive self image in the presence of others. Goffman pointed
out that while in real life, most speakers try to project a positive self image, it has
also been seen that individuals tend to avoid threats to other people s self images
as well. Someone unintentionally making a faux pass in a group will be just as
awkward for the others in the group as for the individual. Therefore it can also be
said that an apology can make the hearer feel as embarrassed as the transgressor.
Goffman points out that people interact in a way in which they can avoid such an
embarrassment. Therefore self image is developed and maintained with the co
operation of others through the

Funding Higher Education For Universities
Introduction In the world of higher education today, many universities are facing tight
budgets. Funding higher education has become a major issue for institutions across
the nation for various reasons. University endowments are not what they use to be
before the financial crisis in 2008 (Weisbrod Asch, 2010). State appropriations to
universities are down and are not as much as they once were in the past. With a
decline in state appropriations, public institutions have been forced to rely more on
tuition revenue. Universities are now competing more than ever with each other to
get students to attend their institution so that they can receive their tuition revenue.
As tuition increases, there becomes an increase for a need of... Show more content on

Separately we are weak, but together we are strong. Ultimately, due to a plethora of
reasons, higher education funding has become difficult and resulted in higher tuition
for students and to combat this issue, university and business partnerships need to be
created and become a major goal which will yield benefits for both parties involved.
University Funding Issues Funding colleges and universities has become a crisis for
the higher education system in America. The higher education funding issue is not
caused by one issue but rather multiple issues like endowment losses, falling
investments, declining donations, declining state appropriations, and increased
student financial aid which leads to a decreased tuition revenue (Weisbrod Asch,
2010). Some of these funding issues create other funding issues like an increase in
tuition revenue that creates an increase in student financial aid and then decreases the
tuition revenue resulting in lower funds for the institution. Since the economic
downturn in 2007 and 2008 and even before then, there has been a decline in state
appropriations to public colleges and universities (Weisbrod Asch, 2010). Colleges
and universities believe that lawmakers have lost faith and do not believe in them,
which have resulted in the significant and constant loss of state appropriations to
higher education (Longanecker, 2006).
Choosing The Best Court For This Lawsuit For Funny Faces
Determining the best court for this lawsuit for Funny Faces Donald Margolin should
first consider the following his personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, and
his minimum contact. Personal jurisdiction deals with the power, the power the court
s has over the parties involved in a certain case. It applies to this certain case because
Margolin is suing for his rights because his face turned blue after using Funny Faces
after shave cream. On the other hand subject matter jurisdictionis the courts power to
hear a certain case. This basically determines what courts will be involved in what
case. The importance of subject matter jurisdiction is crucial in this case because
Donald Margolin is trying to get his case heard by the right court in order for
justice to be served. Margolin doesn t want to have a lack of subject matter
jurisdiction which can cause his case to be dismissed. Margolin case may fall under
one of the three jurisdictions which are exclusive federal jurisdiction, state
jurisdiction, and concurrent jurisdiction. Very few case falls under exclusive
jurisdiction such as bankruptcy cases, admiralty cases, and cases dealing with federal
copyright. State jurisdiction deals with more cases that is not involved with the
exclusive jurisdiction of the federal court system. State court also deals with cases
involving adoption and divorce. Concurrent jurisdiction on the other hand means that
both state and federal court have jurisdiction over a case. If a case

But the National Identification card will have some biometrics data like finger

Using biometrics data such as fingerprints and retina scan can help in verifying that
the card actually belongs to the cardholder (Clement). More likely people are
thinking about introducing the smart card which when swiped will show all the
information like where you are and what you are doing while smart cards are among
the most secure technologies available.
National ID card could combine the functions of a driver s license, social security
registration, immigration documents, and other government issued identification
so that it would be easier to carry just one card instead of all these form of
identification. Once the card is issued then every individual is required to carry
and present an officially issued ID card when asked, and it would also be required
to get particular services. If the card cannot be presented on demand then that person
would be regarded with suspension. If the person who forgot or lost the card falls
under the minority group then the person becomes a suspect and might get some
kind of charges or might even go to jail.
National security is good but not at the cost of personal freedom (Dye). Demanding

Benefits Of Opportunity Cost For Opportunity Costs
Human wants are unlimited but the resources are limited. Therefore, it is not
possible to fulfil all the human desires. As a result, scarcity arises. Scarcity is the
condition where the human desires cannot be fulfilled due to the limitation of
available resources. Hence, to fulfil one wish, we give up another which in economics
is termed as the opportunity costs. Due to limited resources and due to unavailability,
individuals and society are forced to incur opportunity costs. Opportunity cost is the
second best alternative that one gives up. Due to the limitations of resources, human
chooses the most viable options as per the benefits and costs.
The diagram above shows the Production Possibility Curve. It shows the level of
satisfaction as per the consumption of coke and Pizza. The points A, B, C, D E
shows the maximum level of output one can achieve. Any point below the curve is
inefficient and any point beyond the curve is unachievable. In order to enjoy 15
pizzas, one should give up all the coke or in order to enjoy 40 cokes, one should give
up all the pizzas. At point B, one can enjoy 13 pizzas and 20 cokes. Likewise, one
can enjoy 10 pizzas and 30 cokes at point C and 5 pizzas and 38 cokes at point D.
In order to enjoy 20 cokes, one has to give up (15 13) i.e. 2 pizzas which can be
termed as opportunity cost. The opportunity cost to have 30 cokes is the 5 pizzas
that we give up because in that point we can have only 10 pizzas. Therefore, to

1. DIY Charcoal And Glue Peel Off Face Mask
This is currently the most famous peel off face mask on the internet. The chances
are that you have already seen the *painful* looking videos of people peeling off
this mask. It s basically a mask for blackheads removal, but a lot of great people of

Repeat this process twice and let the mask dry for a few minutes. Once it s dry, peel
it off in small sections in upward motion. It may hurt a lot, but beauty is pain so... п ќ
3. DIY Gelatin And Milk Peel Off Mask
Gelatin has amazing benefits for skin and hair. It s mainly used in desserts and other
food items. To make a peel off mask out of it, you will require
1 tablespoon of gelatin powder. (You can find it in grocery stores or you can buy it
online from Amazon)
2 tablespoons of milk.
Knowledge about Double boiler. п ќ
Make sure that you are taking milk that s a little warm so that the gelatin can get
mixed with it easily. Put both the ingredients in a bowl and warm up the mixture
using double boiler process, or microwave it for a few seconds. Use it on your face
quickly (unless it s too hot to apply) because gelatin can become rubbery. This mask
will extract the impurities from your facial pores and also get rid of your facial hairs.
4. DIY Orange Peel Off Mask
The recipe of orange peel off mask is an add on to the gelatin powder and milk mask
I shared above. Just put 2 teaspoons of orange juice in the mixture of gelatin powder
and milk to obtain the numerous skin benefits that orange holds.
5. DIY Agar Agar Peel Off

Jarena Lee was born a free African American woman on February 11, 1783 in Cape
May, New Jersey. From birth to seven years old, little was known about her

seven years old, she went off to work as a servant maid because her family was very
poor like most African Americanfamilies living during this time period. She was
separated from her parents at a very young age, and the house or business she worked
at was almost sixty miles from her hometown of Cape May, which was a tragic
ordeal for a seven year old to experience.
Jarena Lee s parents did not provide religious tolerance in their household, but when
she moved away, she was later exposed to Christian teachings, and that s when she
felt deep down in her heart that she was a wretched sinner. She soon began to
embrace Christianity with a passion, and converted after hearing a sermon from a
very famous African American preacher, Richard Allen. Richard Allen was a
minister, educator, and a writer during the time of slavery. Many former slaves sought
Allen as the most spiritual and God fearing influential black leader. Richard Allen
founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), which was the church
Jarena Lee experienced her conversion at after hearing a sermon from Richard Allen.
The African Methodist Episcopal Church was and still is today known as the A.M.E.
church. This church is a mainly made up of African American Methodist

American Directness and the Japanese Essay American Directness and the Japanese American and Japanese ways of speaking are so different that they often cause culture shock to both Americans and Japanese who visit each other s country. Most Japanese who come to the United States are at first shocked and have a problem with the American direct way of speaking. Culture shock occurs because most Japanese cannot easily escape from the formula politeness= indirectness. Compared to the American way of speaking, Japanese speak much more indirectly. Directness is considered a form of impoliteness in Japan. Therefore, when we want to be polite, we speak and act very indirectly. Similarly, Japanese may be surprised to hear Americans say No often because Japanese tend not to say No. We usually express our reluctance to accept an offer by subtle facial and verbal expressions because we want to avoid making people feel bad by refusing directly. For instance, a Japanese student studying might say, Um..., yes, when asked by an American roommate if he may turn on the TV. It is because there are so few, if any, other events that truly inspire international cooperation and unity like they do. If one can imagine these events as a mirrors reflecting back the organization of international politics, the mega events show a picture of incredible harmony and cooperation (Segrave, 1988). Inherent in that picture of harmony is the opportunity to spread important ideals such as equality, freedom, and democracy throughout the world. In addition global mega events like the world cup and the Olympics have become incredibly effective tools for reorganizing an economy on neoliberal grounds. The Olympics in particular has emerged as the premier event in the international community. However, for all its acclaim, the presentation of the games is drastically different from the games of old. Throughout the evolution the intentions of the games has been skewed. As a result, the modern games, as we know them portray an interesting question politically and economically. • 13. Theory Of Teaching And Learning Theory of Teaching and Learning Part 1. What I Believe about Teaching and Learning It is my opinion that conventional teaching strategies cannot meet the requirements of the classroom environment. First, the classroom environment has been culturally diversified. Second, not all students have similar capabilities or work at the same rate even if they are of the same age. Third, each student has their own learning style. In addition, some students do not react well to the conventional strategies of teaching and, as a result, there is a lack of learning (Heimlich Norland, 2002, p. 18). A Constructivist teaching environment affords more opportunties for both teachers and students, and makes learning more efficient and effective. The Montessori teaching technique is one of the best techniques because of its eight fundamental principles (Lillard, 2005, p. 29). These principles include: The premise that cognition and movement are closely interrelated, and that movement can improve cognition and learning in students. It also holds that the process of learning and well being are enhanced when an individual or student has some degree of control over their lives. Individuals learn well when they develop an interest in what they are being taught. The technique also holds that associating learning activities with a certain reward such as monetary rewards and promises for better grades, adversely affects the learning process and negatively motivates the students to learn

Why would the players get involved with gamblers? One reason, was Charles Comiskey, the owner of the White Sox. Comiskey was just cheap and didn t pay the team what many thought they deserved. He wouldn t even pay for their uniforms to be cleaned, there came along the Black Sox (Lipsyte 25). The first baseman for the White Sox was C. Arnold Chick Gandil and he was the first to meet with anyone about fixing the series (History). • 31. Reasons For St Augustine s Conversion Thesis This paper will explore the factors leading to Saint Augustine s conversion. This conversion was believed to be the result of an ultimate battle of sexual desire with spirit. St Augustine Biography Info Augustine of Hippo was born on November 13, in AD 354, in Thagaste (modern day Souk Ahras, Algeria), and died on August 28, in AD 430, in modern day Annaba, Algeria (then known as Hippo Regius). It was in the latter city where he was named Bishop 35 years prior to his death. It is a challenge to encapsulate renowned personalities, and with St. Augustine, this task is even more difficult (Augustine of Hippo). A theologian and philosopher, Augustine dithered between an earlier, positive Hellenistic outlook, and a pessimistic Christian outlook later on in his life. Shifting from one extreme to another, Augustine accommodated several diverse disciplines and philosophies into his comprehensive yearning to understand a world which seemed so beset with loss, trouble and discord, in theory as well as practice. Therefore, one of Augustine s most admired traits, and inventive elements of his written documents, is that he could connect diverging characteristics of the four Hellenistic schools of philosophy (Platonists, Epicureans, Skeptics, and Stoics) with various Christian ideological doctrines. Between Skeptic influences in Rome s New Academy to the influence of Ambrose, The Bishop of Milan, Augustine was drifting swiftly away from Manichaeism, to the onset of his grand
