Design Brief:
You are required to design and
make a prototype for a shoe
that can be easily transported. It
must be inspired by Alexander
McQueen but you can draw on
other design influences also. It
must be available flat-packed
and be made from Plywood,
MDF, Acrylic and/or
Polypropylene.

WWW
• A detailed and visual piece of research about Alexander McQueen.
• A lovely inspiration board that not only concentrates on shoes but construction techniques
and materials too. I love your Pinterest boards too! These should really help you when
designing!
• A highly detailed product analysis that includes both primary and secondary research. You
have covered all questions in detail.
TARGETS FOR DEVELOPMENT
• Consider how you can present this page in a way that reflects the designer.
• Include a wider range of images in your inspiration board. It would be nice to see colour
palettes, textures, mechanisms and possibly even other products unrelated to shows that
you could take inspiration from. Try not to have any gaps in your inspiration board.
• Compare the similarities and differences of both products in a short summary.

Design
When creating something with a
practical concept, innovative ideas
may be lost, natural curves or strong
lines make the design of the shoes
more interesting.
Whether the shoe
laces up, buckles up
or is a slip up effects
the overall look.

6. Function
It is intended as a sport/comfort shoe as it has
a soft padded sole for long-wear comfort. It
also has thin breathable fabric for sweat
reduction and cooling.
This appeals to the target market as it is multi-
functional. For people always on the move.
To make the shoe more user friendly the
fabric could be cleaned more easily
Customer
The target market customer for this shoe would be
aged between 13-19 as it can be worn as a fashion
shoe as well as exercise shoes. At a young age people
do not want to be purchasing multiple pairs of shoes
due to the cost.
I think the product is aimed at both girls and boys as
the design is fairly gender neutral. It also has a range
of colours and styles to make it versatile for birth
female and male styles.
Environmental issues
Manufactured in Indonesia, China, Vietnam
then shipped worldwide to sell is not the
most sustainable or eco friendly product.
Nike has made positive changes in the
areas of environmental health and safety.
An investigator found that the factory had
substituted less harmful chemicals in its
production, The report concluded that the
factory had implemented important
changes that significantly reduced worker
exposures to toxic solvents, adhesives, and
other chemicals.
The target market the product is aimed at
may not find the effect the shoe has on the
planet particularly significant as not many
people at this young age are well educated
about fossil feels and the carbon footprint.
I believe the needs of the target market are
being partially met, the want a fairly low
budget shoe that is durable. Producing it in
factories overseas is the most economically
attractive offer. However good quality is not
always possible to achieve if the shoe is
manufactured so far away.
To improve the shoe there could be
manufacture sights in the uk, initially.
Size
The shoe comes in sizes 2.5-9.5 for women and
also in bigger sizes for men, which allows a large
range of difference in size. The shape is trainer
style with a padded insole. This will appeal to the
target market as the younger generation often look
for shoes that are easily wearable in a variety of
situations. This meets the target markets needs as
it is very comfortable to match their often fast paced
and busy lives. It could be improved by adding a
variation of width. As so many types of customers
are being targeted to but the product there will be a
wider variation in their foot width, customers will be
put off when the shoe does not have the desired fit
as it is a ‘one width fits all’ which definitely is not
possible when it comes to footwear.
Safety
The shoe is very safe which
means the target market feel
more comfortable and
reassured when purchasing
this product. The only safety
concern there could possibly
be is the support if the
fabric. As it is no super
strong when wearing this
shoe your ankles could roll
in therefore hurting knees or
causing a sprained ankle
Aesthetics
The appearance of the shoe is very
sleek due to the two tone colour
scheme. By having one bold
statement colour it makes the
product a versatile piece that can
easily be paired with outfits which is
attractive to the target range as
most of this age group is fashion
conscious. I don’t believe the shoes
require any aesthetical changes
other than a slightly heavier choice
of materials, the product is very light
which doesn’t contribute to the high
end look the company is aiming for.
Materials
The shoe is made of a Full
mesh upper for excellent
breathability and a Cushioned
collar for protection around
ankle it also has foam outsole
for lightweight impact. Using
these materials make it
marketable as an extremely
comfortable shoe. To improve it
more durable and long-lasting
materials would give make it
more attractive for new buyers.
Cost
In adult women's sizes from the official
website the pair of shoes retails for
£70, although it can be found for
significantly cheaper prices from other
high street stores.
teens would not generally be able to buy
this product without their parents
contributing to the cost. Young adults
may be able to afford this shoe. The
price in my opinion is too high for the
target market as they are probably either
dependent on their parents or a small
wage. However many people are willing

7. Function
It is intended as a stylish shoe as it has a
elegant small heel. It also has several layers
of material to keep feet warm and dry and still
look fashionable. This appeals to the target
market as it is an stripped back alternative to
the tradition chunky ankle boots.
To make the shoe more user friendly the
fabric could be cleaned more easily
Customer
The target market customer for this shoe would be
aged between 20-28 as it can be worn as a fashion
shoe possibly for work or a general outings. The shoe
has more a sophisticated style so would not be aimed
at people too young.
Environmental issues
The shoe is made of real leather primarily.
Although most people might think that only
effects animals used to make it its also
effects the environment. Raising animals
for food and leather requires huge
amounts of feed, pastureland, water, and
fossil fuels.
turning skin into leather also requires
massive amounts of energy and
dangerous chemicals, including mineral
salts, formaldehyde, and various oils,
dyes, and finishes. This all has a very
significant effect on the world we live in
and the damage that is being done.
The target market the product is aimed at
will be aware the product is real leather at
the time of purchase but the population
has little knowledge of the wider problems
of using leather in manufacture of goods.
I believe the needs of the target market are
being met in some areas. Leather s
obviously a good choice for a strong and
durable shoe but there are a large range of
other materials that do not harm animals or
people or the planet.
Size
The shoe comes in sizes 2-9 for women,
which takes into account the huge sizing
range customers require. It is shaped like a
classic Chelsea boot silhouette but with an
incorporated feminine twist by adding a slim
wearable heel. This will appeal to the target
market as it is drawn from classic design but
the new twist makes it unique and fashion
trends are always on the move finding new
trends. The size in my opinion can not be
improved as it already comes in two different
widths, standard and wide. This attracts more
customers as the shoe can cater for many
more fits of feet.
Safety
The shoe is moderately safe, it
offers a small heel which means
there is less chance of. A safety
concern users may face is the
slightly narrow sole on the
underside of the shoe. This is a
hazard as people could be
unbalance and fall and injure
themselves. I think the target
market's needs are being met as
with any heeled footwear there
will always be an increases
safety concern
Aesthetics
The appearance of the shoe is very
sophisticated due to small heel and
‘seamless’ look. There is no buckle
or laces on this shoe which means
there is very minimal bulky features
to take away from This which is
attractive to the target range
because many jobs prohibit people
from wearing to bright or excessive
colours to improve the aesthetics
of this shoe a version that is
colourful or pattered could be
available for times when people
want a pair of statement piece
shoes with the same classic
looking design
http://www.clarks.co.uk/p/26120099
Materials
Tan Leather makes up most of the
outer material, the product is then
lined with synthetic material. The
Sole is made from material resin
and the fastening of the shoe is the
elasticated mesh gusset. Using
these materials benefits the target
market as they are all good quality
meaning the shoe will last a long
time. To improve although it would
difficult to produce and stock and
option of the boots with the real
leather and a version with fax
leather could be available.
Cost
The shoes are no longer in stock as
they have been handed down to me
from my mum however similar items
on the internet made from the same
materials are currently retailing for
£60 from Clarks. People of my
target market range I believe will be
able to afford this product. Due to
the food quality the shoes can be
bought as investment that can be
worn very many times. I think the
price is suitable for the product
quality and target market
8. Design brief
I will be design and make a prototype for a flat pack shoe. This is a product
that can be folded, taken apart of compressed for easy transportation. The
function of my shoe will primarily be for style and leisure wear. To maximise
efficiency of the flat pack function of my show I believe it will be flat and not
heeled. My target market will be the approximate age range of 14-20, catering
for young adults who are studing or in apprentiships. Some of my customers
may have stared full time work. This product could vbe worn for any occasion
but idealy not for sporting activities or formal occasions .
It could be sold from many mid range price stores as it can not cost too much
due to the average budget of my target market. I will be taking inspiration
from Alexander McQueen and modern fashion statement and retail products.
Materials I can construct my shoe from are Plywood, MDF, Acrylic and
Polypropylene. I believe I will make my product from a combination of
plywood and shaped polypropylene, the best way to manufacture this would
be using the fretsaw and disk sander. It is important to create this product to
serve people who have limited space in their bag, either for a commute or
holiday, with a shoe that can be packed and transported.
9. Specification for my product
Size
I am for my product to be made in sizes 4-8 to give people with all size feet a chance to purchase this product., I also want to make my product in wide and
narrow fit to increase sales and comfort for customers. I want to do this for my design as it means I have more flexibility with the design rather than focusing
on the shoe only being made in one size. The shoe will also be fairly lightweight and thin to make it more comfortable and less clunky to wear. Durability of a
wider and bigger shoe is good but makes it less transportable and heavier, which again is not good for easy flat packing.
Cost
Ideally the product would not be overly expensive and range within £20-25 however this is not reasonable as the product cannot be mass made and will be
hand drawn and hand manufactured. This means the average cost would have to be around £40-50. as this prodcut is at the moment aimed at a niche market
a higher price is understandable.
Aesthetics
I am hoping the sow would be a preiumium and high end looking show. As the price is higer it will be available to use high quality materials and use quality
control at every step of production. The shoe may have a removable heel or it could be entirely flat. A hele on the shoe would make it look more high end, but
the flat shoe is more comfortable and if it were used as a comfort shoe to wear to work for cvommuting a flat shoe would sell better and it would be more
functional.
Materials
The materials used in the production of the shoe will have a large impact on the end look and feel. In order to promote the best look plywood would offer the
best option. The natural looking grain provides and organic and natural look and design and it add a small amount of weight to create the impression of high
quality.
Environmental issues
Global warming and global fuel emissions are a serous anf threatening problem to combt this we should be using material manufacturer made or grown in the
uk to minimise planes and boat polluting the earth to transport materials around the globe.

10. Customer
I will need to design my product for a young adult between 14-20, catering for young adults who are studing or in apprentiships because
they are working they want a practical sghoe that also offers styler and fashion. This means the shoe will have to be multi fuctional. I
think my product is aimed girls as the design will be fairly feminine. It also it also will, have a range of colours to suit my my target
market’s tastes.
Safety
The shoe will be very safe so the target market will feel more comfortable and reassured when purchasing this product. But to make it
safe for long time wear and use a padded sole could be used so they will be able to wear the shoe for extended periods of time. I would
also think about having a wide heel, if I added one, to stop the user falling or twisting their ankle as this would be a major safety concern.
